Last month we brought you news of the long-overdue addition of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points to our Premium Members Area, as well as a new filter that allows users to block certain kinds of content.

We’ve got some more tweaks and developments to reveal now and it’s all thanks to the ongoing hard work of matzi11a and TopMarx behind the scenes.

Remember, if you’d like to ‘try before you buy’ with this or any other feature of the Premium Members Area, we continue to offer a free trial.

  • Attacking Returns column added to ‘Fantasy Stats’ (for midfielders, forwards, all players and all outfield players)
  • Returns column added for goalkeepers and defenders (returns = goals + assists + clean sheets + penalty saves)
  • Column for ‘Assists’ updated to Opta Assists (this plus Fantasy Assists, which covers things like shot rebounds and penalty awards, gives Total Assists)
  • Non-Penalty Goals and Non-Penalty Goal Involvement added to the ‘Expected’ tab
  • In the ‘Set Pieces’ tab, Crosses From Free Kick and Successful Crosses (Free Kick) are added to ‘Assist Potential’
More new additions to the FFScout Premium Members Area
  • Double-Digit Hauls added to ‘Fantasy Stats’

Keep your eyes peeled for more developments in the coming days and weeks, including:

  • Player ‘Blanks’ will be added to ‘Fantasy Stats’
  • ICT Influence, Creativity, Threat and Index will be added to ‘KPI Attacking’
  • A ‘Minimum Appearances’ Filter will be added to ‘Filter Stats By:’ in Player Stats
  • A revamp of the ‘BPS Plus’ and ‘BPS Minus’ tabs so that managers can clearly see how a player’s BPS score is broken down

FPL points predictions for Gameweek 3 and beyond 3

Great additions to the members' area, thanks!

One thing I always find baffling is the FPL community's fascination with double-digit hauls. Just because we use a base ten numerical system, this has no bearing on FPL since the points system was not calculated to give '10' any significance. Ten might accidentally be arrived at via a combination of additions and deductions but it's a completely arbitrary tally to be an indication of a large 'haul' of points.

As it happens, 10 is pretty good for forwards because a start, one goal and maximum bonus makes 9, so the player has to do more to get a multiple-score return. It's not so good for defenders because getting a clean sheet does not necessarily mean maximum bonus at all, so to ge need another return to meet the 'haul' threshold. Especially when you consider price, a double-digit haul for a defender should probably be 7-8.

On the other hand, with the extra points for a goal and clean sheet points on offer, there is an argument for saying that the haul threshold for a midfielder should be 11.

It all seems petty (sorry!) and if there really is a desire for a single value that can be taken as a big haul then 10 is just about ok, but I have seen plenty of analysis concluding that a player doesn't get big returns because (ignoring all the 9s)he doesn't get many 10s.

A much better and more nuanced indicator of a big 'haul' is 2+ returns in a single game, which usually comes out at 8-11+. Hopefully the new stats will help us move away from the double-digit haul as a tool and will help us to be a little more critical in our analysis.

      • 10 Years

I am baffled by it too. I prefer your proposal, but I think it's just a less noisy version of the previous haul definition of 10+ points. The basic PPG is still probably cleaner and better imo

        • 10 Years

(No need to define a category called 'haul')

I suppose there is no harm in having a stat measuring what's commonly called 'explosiveness' for captaincy purposes, but it's important to try to set the divider as neatly as possible between a standard and a non-standard score. There's always subjectivity involved to some extent!

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          4 years, 1 month ago

I don't think categorising the data like that is useful. There's no naturally occurring classes of standard vs non-standard (big) in the data, as far as I'm aware

      3. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Having thought about it, I've changed my mind. 10 may be arbitrary but at least it's about points, which I think is better than than number of actions (which score various (kinda arbitrary whether it's more or less) number of points). Maybe I should just check out this Member's update you're taking about 😀

'Returns' and 'attacking returns' if I understand the article correctly!

    2. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 1 month ago

Seems a bit unnecessary looking at 'returns' at all imo, because not all returns are equal. Same thing bugs me about xGI. It treats goals and assists equally.

xAttPts is the stat I'm waiting for. Where xG and xA is weighted against the points they give. i.e. for a midfielder: xAttPts = 5xG + 3xG. It makes a big big difference.

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years

        5xG + 3xA *

      2. _Make
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Good point. It's easy enough to calculate though I think? The problem is that I understand xA to be less reliable than xG.

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 1 month ago

Yeah xA is more unreliable, it depends on the quality of the teammates, but it's included in xGI too so same problem.

But let's just get to the next simple step of xAttPts before going down the xA rabbit hole!

    3. Silecro
      • 8 Years

First thing that comes to my mind for the term "haul" is this discrepancy:

      - midfielder can have one attacking return (goal) in a 1:0 win with a maximum bonus points and have 11 pts (eg. De Bruyne)
      - attacker can have two returns (goal and assist) and still be on single digits (eg. Rashford last season having 9pts with 1G 1A)

      1. _Make
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 1 month ago

Yep, and one will get picked up by 'double digit haul' stats and the other misses out. This is despite the fact
that firstly 2pts are not very significant in the big scheme of things and secondly, what we are interested in is attacking potential- it's not the points so much as the mutiple returns which are instructive. The forward who is more likely get 2x returns *should* typically outscore the mid who gets 1x goal plus max baps occasionally, even if the latter outscores the former in the odd gameweek.

Was it two seasons ago when all Jimenez did was rack up 5s and 9s? Barely any double figure hauls but was getting mad points (recall picking him up for 5.3m that year) - agree that it's a weird metric to judge success.

There is no prevention from catching it. The "immunity" referred to is the body having the ability to fight off the virus. It has the kill instructions. Nothing stopping the virus from getting into the body again though.
