Pro Pundits 29

Having escaped Gameweek 27 relatively unscathed, with a -4 taken and a healthy score of 61 points, I have been trying to work out the opportune time to use my chips, as I’m in the fortunate position of having two Free Hits, a Bench Boost and a Wildcard to use before the end of the season.

Thanks to the news that Chelsea have landed an attractive-looking Double Gameweek 28, against Burnley and Norwich, I’ve decided that there’s enough of an “upside” here to pull the trigger.

So, here we are. I’ve pressed the button and made 14 changes to my side. What can possibly go wrong…? I’m pretty much set on 10 of my starting XI, but the final spot is likely to go right to the wire.

Below, I’ll outline the players I’ve selected and why I’ve chosen them, with so many options to consider this week.

Goalkeeper and Defence

Jimenez ends goal drought as Arsenal claim convincing north London derby win 8

The goalkeeper was an easy choice, with Jose Sá (£5.3m) the stand-out option for me this week. Edouard Mendy (£6.1m) was also a consideration, and those looking for security of starts can do no better than the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner. Similarly, if I wanted to triple up on Chelsea at the back, I’d also turn to Mendy, but there is a midfielder that I have my eye on (more on him later) along with the two Blues defenders I’ve selected at the back.

The reason for wanting to get as much coverage of Chelsea’s backline is pretty simple. Thomas Tuchel’s side play arguably the league’s two most blunt attacks in their Double Gameweek. Over their last six matches, Burnley and Norwich have (by some distance) the lowest non-penalty expected goals (xG) totals of all teams in the league. Furthermore, if we look at Chelsea’s last six matches in the Premier League (which granted is a bit disjointed due to their other cup commitments), they are performing the third-best in the league, behind Arsenal and Liverpool, and having had a tough fixture run during this period to boot. Clearly, Norwich and Burnley will have their work cut out to get any joy against the Blues.

Reece James (£6.2m) is the most exciting pick, although there is a risk he won’t play both matches of the double. I’m willing to take the chance, however, and his cameos in recent cup matches are encouraging. There is also a sizeable turnaround between the two matches (five days), so if he does line up against Burnley, I would be confident of another start versus Norwich, too.

Above: Attacking data over each team’s last six matches, with Double Gameweek 28 teams highlighted

Above: Defensive data over each team’s last six matches, with Double Gameweek 28 teams highlighted

I’ve also decided to go for two Wolves players, even though the above tables show that they have been on the decline a bit in recent Gameweeks. This likely means more save points for the aforementioned Sa, however, who is making a stop every 24.5 minutes: only Ilian Meslier (£4.8m) and Hugo Lloris (£5.4m) beat that of all first-choice goalkeepers.

My selection in the Wolves backline is Romain Saiss (£5.0m). His two goals is the best from the Wolves defence, equal with Conor Coady (£4.8m), and while Rayan Ait Nouri (£4.4m) looks good value as well, I’m banking on the security of starts I get from Saiss, as well as better attacking statistics than Coady (for example, a goal attempt every 140 minutes versus one every 291 minutes).

There are certainly other options here if you don’t want to put all your eggs in the Wolves and Chelsea basket. Southampton have a couple of good options in Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.8m) (if passed fit) and Tino Livramento (£4.4m), and Lucas Digne (£5.1m) could also punish me as I remove him from my team on the Free Hit. Newcastle are also showing improved defensive resolve as of late, and a left-field punt on someone like Dan Burn (£4.4m) playing against his former club might not be a completely ridiculous move for anyone looking for a differential. Taking out the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.1m) does fill me with fear, but at least they have tricky opponents on paper in West Ham and Manchester United respectively.

    Ronaldo, Pogba + Varane -> Jiménez, Salah + L. Thomas (-8) ?
    Gets me to 7 in GW30. Would swap out 2/3 of Adams/JWP/Bednarek + a keeper before GW30 to field 10 or 11.
Leaves me 1.1 ITB. to upgrade Sanchez/Foster, Bednarek, JWP and Adams before GW30.

1 FH and 1 TC left.

    GW28 team:

    Foster
    TAA - Cancelo - Bednarek
    Salah - Maddison - JWP - Ramsey
    Kane, Jiménez (C), Adams

    (Sanchez, Bowen, Thomas, Royal)

Who's "the best" Spurs def to have on a GW28 WC?
Sessegnon has taken Reguilon's place for good?
    What about Doherty vs Royal?
    Dier is a no go?

    Help appreciated!

Dier and davies both nailed and cheap, Davies more involved going forward, the WBs is up in the air but I think we'll see Doherty and Reguilon be the consistent choices there until end of the season.

I'd probably hold on to all your chips, keep them for GW33 onward, the next two GWs just run a couple of -4s or even -8s. Your team is not terrible and you have 5-6 double gameweek players for both weeks. I'd save chips. There will be plenty of FPL squads that are or will be very low on chips once we get to GW30 and your patience will be rewarded.

I like the moves out and James is a great long-term pick. I think double AVL mid is a bit much to hope for, so maybe replace Coutinho with JWP or Fraser/Willock. Saka also might be a good shout and gives you a player for GW30.

Would you consider a -8 to go Bruno --> Son this week also?

    Play Cancelo, Tierney or King?

I've had King in the XI all week but he's really useless and the fixtures aren't really good either. Tierney has higher CS chance than Cancelo but less attacking threat.

That's a tough one Camzy. I think I wouldn't drop Cancelo. I think Arsenal will concede. Only reason i'm keeping King is that I think he'll start both games so it's not worth a hit to get him out.

No idea. Cancelo can get points from anywhere. I'd feel most stupid if he got returns on my bench than if Tierney did. Not sure if that's the best way to look at it 😀

Would you want Thiago Silva long-term, or get itchy for James? Been thinking about this a lot this week & decided that, while TS would probably be my FH pick this week, I think I'll just go straight to James.

Am also planning to put my Bowen spot up for some doubler rotation - Havertz then Son. Could be great upside to this with tricky fixtures for Bowen (Liverpool & Sevilla mainly). Could use Foden for the same purpose (my other mids all double in 29).

        Thanks

I haven't committed to it obviously but potentially wc in 31 so for now planning my transfers for the next 3 gameweeks
First comes down to whether I BB now or hold post wc in 36 - would need to spend -12 to do it
Short answer is probably no for Thiago long term, and I've been burnt by James twice so i'm gonna just pretend he doesn't exist as I won't go back there 🙂

newcastle have the double double but assessing whether it's worth investment with Saints strong at home and chelsea next week. Son in next week is the priority move so whether I do it now is up for grabs

Which option would you prefer to start all 3 games between GW28-30?

    A) Rudiger (bur+nor, NEW, blank) & Bowen (liv, AVL, tot)

    B) Dier (EVE, mun+bha, WHU) &
    GW28: Coutinho (SOU+lee)
    GW29-30: Kulusevski (mun+bha, WHU)

because your team needs to revert back to the previous weeks team after playing FH, there's some issue with the algorithm that doesn't pickup original team from 2 weeks ago (or so I believe that's the reason)

I need to bring in a Chelsea defender and it ultimately means the price difference between Jota or Diaz next week (aware they’re both rotation risks).

Also can’t decide whether to bench Dennis, which seems stupid in a double despite fixtures, Saka against Watford, or Cancelo against Man Utd. Any thoughts, please?

    Dubravka

Yes, that’s the dilemma. I was leaning towards T Silva too, hopefully he was purposefully rested in the cup.

Dennis is a tricky one, I’m effectively betting against Coady and a Saka CS point, but I’m being blinded by the double and him being Watford’s only real outlet

Best option here? I still have both my Free Hits, WC and Bench Boost

    A) Bernardo to Coutinho
    B) Reguilon + DDG to Digne + Sa (-4)

Options above would give me 8 players for GW30 and would allow me to save FH GW29 and a later double/blank

    C) Reguilon + Bernardo to James + Ramsey/McGinn (-4)

Currently have no Chelsea or Wolves defenders

If you don't have any other problems in your team and want to open that Liverpool spot then it might be worth doing the move. Bear in mind Liverpool have a double in 29

Yeah, don't have any problems. Could also save FT.

I would rather save the FT. Both have the same number of games over 28-29. Depends on your GW29 plans

      That’s tough mate. Probably Rudiger.

Rudi is quite predictable, likely to be 14pts I think. Robbo much less so - think CS will dry up with upcoming fixtures but could still beat 14 in attacking returns & bonus

    morning all

On the ever changing WC which currently looks like-

    Sa
    Kilman Digne T Silva Livra
    Ramsey Willock Salah
    Kane Adams Jimi
    (Dub TTA Kulu Saka)
    £2.5 itb

Hows it look?- I think I will almost covered for BW30 (can keep FH). Just wondering if I should go Rudiger instead of T Silva??

    On WC

Would you downgrade Dennis (going to be bench player for a few weeks) to a 4.4m forward

To allow me to switch Foster for Sa?

Will mean I will have Sa for DGW28 & Ramsdale for 29.

Makes sense to me but need some clarification.

If you're 100% going to bench Dennis anyway then it makes sense to me.

Yes. I'm doing that so I can spend more on 5 across the middle. Wouldn't run Sa and Ramsdale as feels like you're booking in a future transfer to release the funds

No I don't think so. Foster/Sa won't be too far apart in points, and Dennis could snag a goal, you never know as he is unpredictable too.

    Would you rather bench boost:

    A) GW28 - Ramsdale (wat), Cancelo (MUN), Bowen (liv), Saka (wat)
    B) GW29 - Foster (sou), Ait-Nouri (eve), Digne (whu), Dennis (sou)

Leaning towards A, with the added bonus it should at least wipe out the -8 I've taken?!

WC midfield options- thoughts welcomed please

    A. Get Saka and pick 3 from Mount, Coutinho, Raphinha and Willock (currently on first three)
    B. Get Mount, Coutinho, Raphinha and Willock and then bring Saka in for 29.

Likely all five play in a 3-5-2

Hate booking in a transfer off a WC but struggling to pick one to lose with A.

    Sa
    TAA Coady KWP Digne
    Salah Ramsey JWP Willock
    Jiménez Broja
    (Dubravka Mee Son Weghorst)
Already use two transfers with -4
    Mee & Weghorst >
    A- Tierney & Vardy
    B- Rüdiger & Laca
    Use BB but for -12
C- Keep it like this save BB

Thoughts on the following WC? 0.0 ITB

    Sa

    Robbo / James / Rudiger

    Salah / Son / Mount / Raphinha

    Adams / Broja / Hwang

Bench: Foster / TAA / Gordon / Mee

    a) Mount or Coutinho? (Whichever I pick will likely go for Saka the GW after.)

    b) Am I mad benching TAA over Hwang?
