Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers face another tough captaincy decision for Double Gameweek 28, with no real standout favourite for the armband.

In an attempt to find the best one for this latest round, first we will assess the fallout of the captain poll, before then analysing the key options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Following confirmation of Chelsea’s Double Gameweek 28, we reset the captain poll on Wednesday night.

Up until that point, Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) led the way, pulling in the support of 23.15% ahead of Liverpool’s Anfield clash against West Ham United.

However, he has since been replaced at the summit by Aston Villa’s Philippe Coutinho (£7.4m), who comes into this round with 18.23% of the vote. The Brazilian is averaging 5.3 points per match since his January arrival, but has blanked in four of his six appearances.

This week’s top three is closed out by Raphinha (£6.5m), who, despite scoring just one goal since Gameweek 18, could be reinvigorated by the arrival of new head coach Jesse Marsch.

Antonio Rudiger (£6.1m) and Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), meanwhile, are the best of the rest this time around as Chelsea travel to Burnley and Norwich City, while Bruno Lage and his Wolverhampton Wanderers squad take on Crystal Palace and Watford at Molineux.

PHILIPPE COUTINHO

 1

Philippe Coutinho has settled well at Aston Villa following his January arrival, having produced two goals and two assists in his first six appearances for the club. During that time, he ranks top amongst team-mates for shots, with 14, although just six have arrived in the box, whilst his eight created chances/0.30 expected assists (xA) is a tad underwhelming, given his playmaking abilities.

However, up until Gameweek 27, Villa had been going through a difficult moment, losing 1-0 to Watford and Newcastle United in back-to-back matches, which no doubt impacted the Brazilian’s actual returns and underlying numbers.

On a more positive note, things did improve last time out, as Steven Gerrard shifted to a more compact 4-3-1-2 formation, which enabled him to get both of his goalscorers – Ollie Watkins (£7.5m) and Danny Ings (£7.7m) – onto the pitch at the same time. It must be said that Villa were a little more cautious overall in attack, and Coutinho did sometimes take up a deeper role (see below), but the fact he still has three central midfielders deployed behind him suggests he won’t have to curb his attacking instincts too much, if at all.

Above: Philippe Coutinho’s touch heatmap v Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 27

Now, Villa host Southampton before a trip to Leeds United in Double Gameweek 28.

The Saints are one of the division’s in-form sides, losing just one of their last 10 matches, but have failed to keep an away clean sheet since October.

As for Leeds, their defensive issues have been well documented of late, and resulted in the departure of Marcelo Bielsa last weekend. Because of that, they are a bit of an unknown under new head coach Jesse Marsch, although with limited time to prepare, plus the ongoing absence of key midfielder Kalvin Phillips (£4.7m), it could perhaps take a few weeks before we start to see his impact on the pitch.

    Please note the following RMWCT is for someone who has no financial interests in ML this year (although I am second in my mini-league which is mostly for pride at this point - by three points, 43 clear of third) and my main focus is OR this year as I'm currently at 36,484. For these reasons you will see some differentials and please see the reasons in my replies to my own post, but I am open to recommendations/conversations about potential changes. All in all, I am NOT set on this team (yet).

    Sa, Foster
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Rudi
    Salah, Foden, Ziyech, Maddi, Bowen
    Jimi, Broja, Gelhardt
    0.1 ITB

    This would be my wildcard team.
    I plan on using my FH in GW30 then I will probably BB in GW36 that everyone is talking about.

      People have been saying the following;

      A) WC 33/34 so you can get nearly a full squad of DGWers in 36
      B) FH in 36 so you can get a full squad of DGWers

      My response is this for each team (brackets = # of unscheduled fixtures remaining).

      - Everton (3) - LOL, no thanks
      - Leicester (3) - Only want Maddison, maybe Vardy if he rediscovers form (Everton/Norwich fixtures could be juicy)
      - Burnley (3) - Think we've learned from their last double
      - Arsenal (2) - Not overly convinced by anyone, would take White, but I like the backline I've made and their games in hand are Spurs away and Chelsea away...
      - Chelsea (2) - Covered
      - Newcastle (1) - Willock at the most? Prefer my midfield (easy to bring in though if I see a run of form for the likes of Maddi/Bowen if either fall off the pace - even Ziyech and Foden could get dropped quickly)
      - Aston Villa (1) - Digne? Coutinho? Ramsey? Again all easy to get in and with the exception of a CS against Brighton all blanked last three GWs
      - Spurs (1) - ... :'D LOL (Also unscheduled game is Arsenal - derby's are unpredictable)
      - Norwich (1) - Enough said
      - Watford (1) - Enough said... Maybe Sarr if he finds some form (have Foster as back-up GK - for BB purposes)
      - Brighton (1) - Extra fixture is City...
      - Wolves (1) - Plan on having Sa & Jimi (Ait Nouri to be monitored)
      - Southampton (1) - Plan on having Broja (Livra to be monitored)

        GW36 is 8 gameweeks away, enough time for every single one of the teams you mentioned to change its form (for better or worse), hence no need to predict now how many players will we want from each team. God knows maybe in GW33 we'll all be jumping on triple leicester wagon, or Everton suddenly rises in form

      I understand that people will say "but Tuchel said *James* played more minutes than he was supposed too". Yeah cool, it's my wildcard, this is supposed to be the team for the rest of the season with minor tweaks. If I lose a point or two this week because his minutes are managed I believe he'll make up for them over the remaining 10-12 games

      I understand *Foden* hasn't been the best, but I looked at City's midfield (if he doesn't perform well - note he's playing as False 9 a lot - then he can be switched easily too - recommendations welcome);
      Bernardo - Started all of the last 6, one attacking return. Been there, done that, had him for the haul
      Sterling - Started all of the last 6, didn't make 60 minutes in one fixture, five attacking returns (in two games) too expensive
      Kevin - Started five of the last 6, three attacking returns, blanked in last two, dropped for Norwich - also too expensive
      Mahrez - Started two of the last 6, red hot form prior to AFCON, minutes are a big risk - too expensive
      Gundo - Started three of the last 6, not really known for being attacking, susceptible to rotation

      I understand that *Ziyech* is a risk, especially with James returning, but he has three goals in his last three games (with clean sheets and six bonus points). The dude is on fire, he has a slight knock and unfortunately Mount is 0.1 more than what I can afford if I ditch Ziyech. I'm willing to give him a punt and if not open to swapping him (recommendations welcome)

      *Gelhardt* is my biggest concern of the squad, but hoping that Jesse Marsch comments about favouring rotation might work in his favour, he does after-all have one goal and three assists in 385 minutes of PL football, which isn't awful for 4.6M

      *Jimi* depending on form can be upgraded to Antonio (if he regains form - goal v Southampton in FA Cup and assist v Wolves last GW) but I'd like to see what he can do in his next four FDR2 games (plus double).

      The following fits in the budget but I just don't like the look of as much overall;

      Ziyech & Foden > Son & Gorden/4.5

      Squad for GW28 would be;

      Sa*
      Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James*, Rudi*
      Salah (c), Son, Maddi, Bowen
      Jimi

      Foster, Dennis, Gordon, Gelhardt

    WC midfield options

    A. Get Saka and pick 3 from Mount, Coutinho, Raphinha and Willock
    B. Get Mount, Coutinho, Raphinha and Willock and then bring Saka in for 29.

    Likely all five play in a 3-5-2
