In this piece, I look at Leicester City, Newcastle United and Manchester United to narrow down some of the choices available to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – especially those playing the Free Hit – in Double Gameweek 33.

James Maddison v Harvey Barnes

The Barnes v Maddison dilemma is an interesting one. Obviously, the minutes played in the UEFA Europa Conference match on Thursday could have a bearing on the decision but let’s have a closer look at the underlying numbers for the two over the last six matches.

It is worth mentioning that Maddison has played 393 minutes compared to 463 for Barnes.

Above and below: A comparison of Harvey Barnes (left) and James Maddison (right) over their last six matches

Barnes is the clear winner in terms of expected data, coming out top for expected goals (xG, 1.69 vs 1.04) and only marginally behind for expected assists (xA, 0.60 to 0.75). As usual, Barnes’ wayward shooting lets him down and the xG of Maddison’s shots on target is greater (1.32).

A closer look at the underlying goal threat numbers shows an alarming trend: Maddison has not taken a single shot in the box over Leicester’s last six matches while Barnes has taken 14. However, only two of Barnes’ attempts have been big chances, so he is clearly more of a quantity over quality player. Barnes has had 30 penalty box area touches to Maddison’s seven.

Maddison is way ahead on the underlying creative numbers, which makes me wonder why their xA was so similar in the earlier image. He has created 13 chances to Barnes’ five and three big chances to just one. Perhaps the opportunities he did carve out were of low quality.

On the basis of this, there’s really not much to split the two. Barnes’ benching in their last league game and withdrawal at half-time on Thursday does improve his prospects of starting both matches in Gameweek 33, with Maddison starting every fixture after the international break. I would marginally prefer Barnes as Maddison seems more of a ‘home game banker’ with 77 points at the King Power versus 53 away. Barnes has also scored more at home (50 v 41) but the difference is not as stark.

Fabian Schar v Matt Targett

Leicester a minefield. Barnes hooked because awful and it worked. But Maddison played full game and is due a rest. Wouldn't take a hit for either right now.

So i'm in full on casual mode this season despite my best efforts to stay in touch. So much so that I missed my first ever deadline last week, even though I knew about it and was planning my transfers on Friday afternoon; pesky kids 🙂

Anyway, somehow I still have WC, BB and 2 x FH left and no idea where and when to play them. Have Sa and Raph with a no show this week and only 2 DGWers. At 500K and all them chips the team needs an overhaul and there's huge scope for a strong finish.

    Steele Sa
    TAA Robbo Tarkowski Saiss Doherty
    Saka Salah Kulu Raph McArthur
    Hwang Kane DCL

Haven't trolled the Hot Topics yet and not looking for a spoon feed but any advice from you seasoned stalwarts greatly appreciated 🙂

I’d be tempted to free hit this week. After your 2fts you have no bench and that is including Mcarthur. So have fun with the dgw.

Otherwise, consider Schmeichel and Maddy/Barnes, though there are rotation risks with the latter 2.

I missed the deadline last week too and know well how that goes!

Same chips, we only have 1 option to use them all effectively which is FH33, WC34/35, BB36, FH37
You could probably swap the BB and 2nd FH but that's what I'm running with I think

Currently having to start Weghorst. So for a -4

    1. Doherty to Robbo (already got TAA) or James and play 4 defenders
    2. Weghorst > Wood
    3. Ramsey > Barnes (already have Maddy)

1 would give me to DGW players on the bench. WC next week.

    Cheers guys.

    Dubrav (3.9)
Schar / Gabriel / Cancelo (Laporte / cucurella)
Fernandes / Maddison / Saka / Sancho (Barnes)
    CR7 / Nacho / wood

agree - way too much money on the bench - especially given all the doubles meaning most players will make at least 1 appearance.

Bench could have cheaper guys like Dewsbury-Hall and Bednarek.

Personally, I would take Son + Kane on FH. Many people have just one of them with Kulusevski, so having both could gain some rank.

The problem is that most of the single gameweek players in 33 have better fixtures than the dgw players.

For example, do you think NEW will keep cs v LEI and CPL?
Can you really trust Man U with only one decent fixture?

The key to all this is the CTY double still to be arranged. I have FH, WC and BB left too and am looking at a FH in 37.

The full schedule will be set on Sunday evening if MCI beat LIV on Saturday: MCI+WHU Double in 36, WOL Double in 37 (and WHU Blank)

If LIV beat MCI we'll have to wait for an announcement next week to se if MCI+WOL Double in 36 or 37

I don't think there is a situation where Man City GW 37

Starting to doubt FH is worth it this week (might be better maxing out on City & Chelsea next week). With 1 FT and 2x FH left, what would you do?

    A) Sa > Schmeichel
    B) Sa & Raphinha > Schmeichel & Maddison (-4)
    C) Sa & Doherty > Schmeichel & Laporte (-4)
    D) use 1st FH + get Son, Cancelo, Maddison etc.

B & C are benching headaches but having no bench cover doesn't sound that smart either

    Trent Robertson James White (Doherty*)
    Salah Bowen Saka Kulusevski (Raphinha*)

Isn't Rudiger more likely to start than James?

Yes thinking James but not Rudi. Just not sure about Livra either.

unsure about ASM as he’s looked a bit shaky since returning but could always pay off. a concern is that you have no Maddison. his minutes may be managed bcs of Leicester being in the conference league. however I would look to replace Martinelli with Maddison bcs Arsenal are not in the best form atm. smith Rowe could also easily play one of the games in the double. JWP is understandable but personally i would look to avoid Southampton players due to their bad run of form. however, one free kick could change it all and i could be wrong. apart from a few concerns it looks like a decent FH
