FPL 2022/23 ‘sleeper’ picks: Pedro Neto

The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we take a look at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Pedro Neto.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: Pedro Neto 1
  • Starts: 5
  • Substitute appearances: 8
  • Goals: 1
  • Assists: 1
  • FPL points: 22 (3.2 per match)

Neto made his return from a serious knee injury in February and spent the rest of the season building up his fitness and trying to get match-sharp.

However, it was far from straightforward, as the 22-year-old picked up a foot injury in March which ruled him out of the games against Everton and Leeds United.

As a result, Neto only made 13 Premier League appearances for a total of 501 minutes in 2021/22, but did start to look a lot sharper towards the end of the season, registering an assist against Manchester City and scoring his one and only goal of the campaign at Anfield on the final day.

His underlying numbers in that time were largely good when compared to team-mates, despite Wolves struggling on the whole (more on that later).

During the run-in, it’s worth noting that Neto took up a central role in Bruno Lage’s 3-5-2 formation, although this system is generally rolled out against tougher opposition, and you’d expect him to revert to a wider position at the beginning of 2022/23 given the opening fixtures.

FPL PREVIOUS

For a better indication of Neto’s FPL potential, we should probably look at the 2020/21 season, when he was largely injury-free and made 31 Premier League appearances under Nuno Espirito Santo.

One of his team’s standout performers, Neto topped both the goal-scoring and assist charts at Wolves, registering 13 attacking returns.

The season saw the Portuguese accumulate 61 shots, although it was his playmaking abilities that really caught the eye, as he produced eight assists and ranked joint-eighth amongst all midfielders for chances created:

Whether fielded out wide, as a number 10 or deeper (see below), Neto found a way to impact games, and in a short space of time went from a rotation option to being one of Nuno’s key men.

2022/23: THE FPL PROSPECTS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: Pedro Neto

With a full pre-season behind him, hopes are high that Neto can hit the ground running in 2022/23.

And given the opening schedule, which sees Wolves sit top of our Season Ticker over the first six Gameweeks, he certainly has the fixtures to start strongly.

At this stage, it’s worth noting that Lage’s side really struggled for goals throughout 2021/22 and finished the campaign among the division’s lowest scorers. In fact, only the three relegated clubs scored fewer than Wolves’ 38, while they are also coming off the back of an awful end to the season, taking just 11 points from their final 14 games.

To address those issues, they will no doubt dip into the transfer market, but they will also need some of the current crop to step up.

And the return of Neto feels key given that Wolves struggled to create much from their left-side last season, with just 26% of the chances they created arriving from that zone, compared to 38% on the right and 36% through the middle. You’ll also notice a distinct lack of actual assists from that area of the pitch on the graphic below.

Above: Chances created (assists in green) by Wolves 2021/22

Neto can operate on either flank, but if deployed on the left, will surely add more unpredictability to Wolves’ play, which in turn ‘should’ produce more goalscoring opportunities.

The prospect of him linking up with Rayan Ait-Nouri down that side also feels exciting. The young wing-back really caught the eye at times last season, showcasing his offensive qualities, and with him overlapping Neto it could cause real problems for the opposition.

Neto’s assist potential will also increase if Wolves’ forwards can step up. Raul Jimenez endured a frustrating 2021/22 with only six goals after getting over his horrific injury, while Fabio Silva failed to score at all. Their respective expected goal (xG) delta’s (-0.60/-2.10) certainly suggest they should be doing much better in front of goal.

So, Neto’s return could be a major positive for Wolves next season, which could see them rediscover their goalscoring touch. The 22-year-old has certainly shown flashes of brilliance during his time at Molineux, and if priced at £6.0m, could be a nice midfield enabler to capitalise on those appealing early fixtures.

Are Premier League players and associated club staff banned from playing FPL?

I read about a Norwegian who has (had) analytics monitoring when PL players all from one team drop a teammate from their FPL lineups due to injury prior to it becoming public knowledge?

It involved Grealish at AV (so it isn't recent) so it may be old news.

Depends from club to club, as Andy says some are free about it and some are strict, and the strictness ranges. Some bar players from picking from their own club, some bar their players from playing at all. Dean Smith was very annoyed while at Villa 2 seasons ago when it came out that Grealish was injured because a guy who has a Twitter account that follows certain players / club staff "leaked" the injury before Villa played that weekend as one of his posts showed that multiple players / staff transferred out Grealish. Pretty sure Harry Maguire was told to delete his team last season after transferring out Ronaldo due to injury too.

Even before Chelsea bid, there were rumours that Tuchel was interested in bringing in Raph to use at WB, possibly RWB with James moving centrally? He did play there a few times for Leeds.

I think that there is a possibility of this happening. The lure of Champions League football will be the main motivator for Raph above anything else.

I think the World Cup is at least as important to him. Brazil are likely to be the favourites and he won't want to be a mere bit-part player.

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

I'd say maybe but I really think that such a move would take a long while for him to adjust to, apart from pressing he doesn't really have much defensive ability from what we've seen, if anything I'd want him far away from his own box with his tendency to foul / lose his temper

Without some additions can see Wolves suffering this year.

Certainly wouldn't go near an attacker.

Ait-Nouri is the only one who slightly interests me, but it's a risk considering how valuable them defensive slots are looking. He also has good competition in Jonny.

Agree, although I did see something about Semedo leaving and one of those left wingbacks switching to the right. I think, given the opening fixtures, a 4.5 defender (could be Kilman) as first bench is still viable.

If Semedo left it would likely be Jonny RWB, which would make me more inclined to go for one of them. Depending on price point

Agreed, I already don't really trust them as it is but I think the least we're going to see is one of Moutinho and Neves leaving and they will be hard to replace. Doesn't seem like they're exactly close to signing anyone right now

Sterling, Havertz and Raphinha are all playing for World Cup places. If mount drops into deeper midfield, who shields the defence? It's not Kovacic or Jorginho's job and Kante is ageing. The centre backs could be kids or new players needing to adjust - I think they need adequate protection, whether the formation have a Back 4 or Back 3 with wingbacks.

It may be due to fixture density due to the World Cup, I don't know, but all the top teams are assembling squads where key players will have to start on the bench - Jota, Firmino, Rashford, Richarlison or Kulusevski, Mount, Smith-Rowe. Interestingly, the only squad that is thinning it's glut of stars with Peptation City.

Kovacic and Jorginho do do that though, Kovacic is more like an 8 but he does a lot of good defensive work, Jorginho is more there to keep the ball moving but he's closer to a 6 than a CM in the last few years IMO. Honestly I think questions do need to begin to be asked of Kante a bit. Injuries clearly are a problem but I really wasn't too impressed by his performances on the occasions I saw him last season. That being said I saw a clip doing the rounds on Twitter at the end of last season of when Sarri was at Chelsea talking about him and he said that Kante wasn't a DM and didn't actually have the capabilities for the position because you need someone in that position to move the ball very fast and that wasn't one of his attributes. He was lambasted for it and I know Sarri didn't really work at Chelsea but I think he's right, Kante does wonderful defensive work but it's from central midfield where he excels at turning over the ball.

All 3 seemed to be being eased out of the first team last season, it seemed to me. Saul Niguez wasn't the answer, and i'm surprised there's no activity in the market to strengthen midfield with all the attention on attack and defence. But I really fancy Kovacic at 5m in LiveFPL as a first bench option if it looks like he gets sufficient minutes.

Agree with Kovacic point, he's the one that you never start, but would bring bench points more often than we would like. He had an awesome start last year, something like 1G 4A in first 8 gameweeks

It's an easy one to forget! I think he needs to be a lot more involved on the ball in general than he was at Palace but if he keeps arriving in / around the box like he did at Palace he could do well, very interested to see how things look in preseason

Let's see what Chelsea's squad looks like once the transfer market closes. Reports in the media suggest we are signing five or six players, and Cech made comments to that effect a few weeks ago.

At the moment it seems we are heading for a change in system with four at the back.

More value than ever in ignoring sexy new signings and going for established players this year I think. Salah and Son as premiums, two Liverpool full backs, let other premiums settle in. If you're scared of City GW2, go KDB over Son or leave room for that move.

Probably the sensible move, but Haaland is too much fun. I've got to have him.

The last time City had a goal-hoarding talisman he became an FPL legend. Since then their goals have been spread amongst the team, giving us watered down FPL picks. But this season, we may have that talisman back. We may have City's version of Salah this season, and I want in.

Yeah it's going to take a brave/stupid person to overlook him given he's going to be in 50%+ of teams unless he's 13million.

And I remember Aguero's FPL debut, got I think 16 points from the bench, so even if the unexpected happens it could work out...

I see them all at 5.0m. If you're very lucky, Targett could be 4.5 but I'd really expect all Newcastle first-choice defenders/GK to be 5m minimum.

Unfortunately, I think Pope and Trippier will be 5.5m. Burn, Targett and Botman 5.0m, the rest 4.5's.

One of my pet peeves is the term 'DM' for 'Defensive Midfielder'. It is an awful description of a player's position that doesn't capture what the player's role is.

A player in that area of the pitch can have 3 distinct roles.

    1. Holding midfielder - drops back into defense to cycle possession and sits in front of the centre backs as a shield.
    2. Box-to-box - Focuses on ball-carrying in the midfield between the two boxes (can be a 6 or an 8).
    3. Regista (playmaker) - dictates the tempo of the game from deep and sprays passes out to the attacking areas.

And players often mix these roles and are usually stronger at some of the elements above than others.

Declan Rice is a box-to-box midfielder. Jorginho is a Regista. Rodri is a holding midfielder. Kante is both 1 and 2. You can't just plonk a player down in that position and consider the role filled. It depends on what the team needs and is looking for.

I think 1 is fine to be described as a DM. Not 2 or 3 though (although it doesn’t really bother me either as usually I know exactly what sort of role the player being spoken of is really playing and can just correct it in my head).

    6. Drexl Spivey

Depends entirely on the team, I suppose. Many have made it their bread and butter. Signing someone Dietmar Hamann back in the day, for example, you knew exactly who was turning up. When, say, Pool played Masch, Alonso and Gerrard together they covered pretty much all the roles you've just outlined. Never any doubt Masch was the DM though.

True but for the purposes of FPL I dont really mind people lumping them in together as DMs. Your box-to-box type may go on the occasional run of attacking returns but it usually dries up & I don't really like them as FPL assets much more than the other 2

Arsenal's interest in Tielemans cooled a few weeks back and it seemed like he was more likely to sign an extension than leave. Maybe Arsenal will go back now as they've seemingly missed out on Raphinha and Martinez may be harder to land than initially expected.

Arsenal do really need more depth because the reason they missed out on top 4 was due to the fact we had Cedric, Tavares and Elneny playing in the last 10 games.

    https://theathletic.com/3387773/2022/06/29/neymar-everton-june-30/?source=twitteruk

A reminder that June 30th is a pretty important date for a few clubs in terms of trying to balance the books (or at least make them look better). Barcelona will likely want to officially sell FDJ (if they are to sell him) by the end of tomorrow or else La Liga will impose a tighter salary cap on the club for next season (and thus signing someone like Lewandowski or Bernardo becomes a lot more difficult than it already is). Everton are close to edging into FFP issues so if they don't sell they may still be fine, but it would mean they will probably have to rely on loans and free transfers again if they are to make any signings this summer. Puts them into a bad position as teams interested in Richarlison (like Chelsea or Spurs) have better bargaining power and aren't going to offer a full valuation for him. PSG also seem to want Neymar to move on and doing do by tomorrow would help as if he stays past that date, a 2-year extension will trigger meaning he'll be at the club until 2027.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

The guardian was saying today that Levy knows he has Everton over a barrel with Richarlison.

Yeah I can't see anyone wanting an injury-prone 30 year-old winger on astronomical wages that won't do any defensive work for his team. He's made it clear he doesn't want to play in England so very few clubs that could afford to indulge him

Isn't that Sky Sports shilling for women's football though?

It will take a while before their propaganda pays off. I'd be surprised if many people know the names of more than 10 WSL players.

I only know about Rapinoe, Mediema and Marta. Oh, and that girl that plays for Villa. Can't remember her name though.
