The 2022 UEFA European Women’s Football Championship gets underway on July 6 and official sponsors Starling Bank have launched a Fantasy game for the tournament.

Here is a quick guide on how to play the game.

Our friends at Fantasy Football Community will be covering Euro 2022 in more detail as the tournament goes on, from team reveals to chip strategy.

REGISTER TO PLAY WOMEN’S EURO FANTASY FOOTBALL

THE BASICS

Each manager is handed an £84m budget to spend on a maximum of 16 players (11 starters and five substitutes), with a limit of two goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders and five strikers.

The squad can actually be smaller, if you prefer to splash more of the cash on the premium picks.

For the group phase and quarter-finals, you can’t select more than four players from the same nation.

Then, choose a formation (4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 5-3-2, 5-4-1 or 4-5-1), captain, Supersub (more of which below) and bench order.

Players in your squad can even be switched during the round, providing their match hasn’t kicked off.

‘Participants can modify their teams as long as a player’s match hasn’t started (no transfer limit). The change must be within budget and the authorised player limit per nation.’ – Official rules

Player prices rise and fall based on real-life performances, with points doubled for captains.

HOW TO SCORE POINTS

Here is the scoring system for player points, which doesn’t award any bonuses:

GOALKEEPERGoal conceded (penalty): -1Goal conceded (non-penalty): -3Each save: 2
Goal scored (penalty): 15Goal scored (non-penalty): 25Assist: 15
DEFENDERGoal (penalty): 10Goal (non-penalty): 18Assist: 10
MIDFIELDERGoal (penalty): 8Goal (non-penalty): 15Assist: 8
STRIKERGoal (penalty): 6Goal (non-penalty): 12Assist: 6
ALLOwn goal: -5Yellow card: -3Red card: -5

The reason ‘player’ had to be specified is that, unlike in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), each will also score points based on team performance.

Win: 9Draw: 3Lose: -2
Points per goal difference: +/- 2GK clean sheet: 12DEF clean sheet: 6

To slight complicate matters, team points are only applied in proportion to the time spent on the pitch.

‘Example: Wendie Renard (French player) is on the bench but comes on at the beginning of the second half. She then plays 45 minutes and France win 3-1.

The team points will then be nine for the win plus four for the goal difference.

Wendie Renard will then score 13 x 0.5 = 6.5 team points’

So if you start midfielder Alexia Putellas, who scores both a penalty and open-play goal to seal a 3-0 win, she will bag 23 points for the goals, nine for the win and six for the margin of victory. A total of 38 points.

Furthermore, with no appearance points handed out, an outfielder that blanks could easily finish on negative points.

OTHER DIFFERENCES FROM FPL

Customised private leagues let managers alter the limits for starting budget, players per nation and contest duration. If tweaked, there will automatically be a second team created for you.

Meanwhile, those named on your bench will still earn points, just at half the rate of those you started.

However, each game day allows managers to label one of their substitutes as a ‘Supersub’. This player will score triple points but only if she also comes on mid-match. If she starts from kick-off, it will remain half points for your total.

For example, a manager benches Midfielder A but assigns her the ‘Supersub’ privilege. It will be a nervous wait for the teamsheets, as a start for Midfielder A means half points but being named on the bench could lead to a cameo and therefore triple points.

Since 5 subs is now allowed in the premier league and I’m assuming the original fpl squad structure was 3 subs because, we’ll, 3 subs per team

Could you ever see them moving to a 17 man fpl squad?

Nah, we just need to manage our squads more smartly.

The irony for FPL is that 5 subs in real life increases chances of players getting on the pitch, so decreases likelihood of your FPL being required. 1pointers galore!

‘wonder if they are taking ages because they are implementing a formation change (extra strata), so we can have 5 outfield subs to match the new rule; so you pick from something like:

        GK (GK)
DEF DEF DEF (DEF DEF) -> current defenders
MID (MID MID MID) -> CM/DMs like Rodri and Neves (get clean sheet points, so players like Kante get CS points)
AM AM AM AM -> attacking midfielders and wingers like Mount and Salah
FWD FWD -> number 9s like Haaland and Wilson

So you can play 4132 or 3142 or 3241 or 3331 or 4231 or whatever’

That would be awful. Someone like Rodri with his 6 or 7 goals and 19 clean sheets would score more points than KDB

I don’t see the problem with that, him being one of the best players in the league aside, not many would have predicted he’d score that many and he probably won’t do it again.

Someone like Soucek had 2nd most tackles and 3rd most clearances for West Ham, is he not just as valuable to West Ham in terms of keeping clean sheets as the full-backs are? I think so, but obviously don’t expect everyone to agree - just thought it’s a good way to make more players FPL relevant, solve the inside forward vs midfielder problem, and add in the 5 subs rule too 🙂

I get the idea but the game is about goals and assists

All our teams midfields would be Rodri, Soucek, Kante and Fabinho and sat watching the games hoping for a clean sheet.

Isnt it more fun hoping someone like Bowen or Maddison get a goal?

Ahh, Defensive mids as well as attacking mids in the team, okay, reasonable idea i suppose, but when someone like Soucek gets more points than the majority of the strikers it would make the game feel a bit odd

I have long thought about the fact that sometimes the game can be guessing about rotation too much...it doesn't feel right to need to consider this as much as is currently needed...it shouldn't be a MAJOR part of the game. I'd prefer to see you getting the BEST score from your squad with a slightly larger squad.

Also who ever wants a DM ...something needs to happen to make those more attractive ..else they may as well not be in the game....you could do that by price I suppose by in real football of course a quality DM is vital...maybe some changes here might make the game less easy to play ..I dont know...maybe price is the answer OR + 2 pts for a CS.

No answers here but id love something however small to be doone that lessens the impact of rotation guessing....

Why is women's tennis, athletics, gymnastics, skiiing and even boxing now seen as totally normal meanwhile male football fans still struggle to accept women playing "their" game.

I think a lot of people who dismiss the women's game a) don't watch it and b), hold a lot of other views which fit in with a rigid "the world's gone PC mad mate" mindset.

Doesn't account for everyone, me for example. I don't watch any of those sports, for men or women. Regarding male football, there's loads on the telly I don't watch - youth competitions, local Asian leagues, US and European leagues. English Premier League football and FPL fills the limited amount of time I'm willing to give to sport. Nothing to do with sexism.

I think one of the problems (which you don't have as much in the examples listed) is there are too many uncompetitive games - when you get to the latter stages these tournaments are really good. I thought the Olympic tournament last year and the last WC were a great watch. I think the women's game would benefit greatly from a club Super League with the top European and American clubs.

I do wonder a bit if this is an actual attempt to sign him or if it's like January where they threw in random bids for expensive players knowing they'd never be accepted so they could then say "hey look we tried!". He would be a top addition though, could really complete that attacking line-up but at the same time I think another striker is more important

True on the first point - I shouldn't get my hopes up.

I suspect with him and 'maybe' Lingard then we have enough depth to rest Antonio and pay Bowen/Danjuma through the middle when needed.

Also I guess we're not finding a facsimile of Antonio any time soon - so a direct backup doesn't necessarily make sense.

    New FPL idea….
Each transfer “burnt” gives you 4 extra points….. or just infinitely roll transfers too

    New Chip idea
    Joker. (Or Maximise)
You can change your team (not transfers) during the GW. Move captain, adjust bench etc, to get the best available points

They won't do either, they want to drive engagement but not make it so that you have to micro manage during the gw. An auto maximize is an idea though.

As a Barça season ticket holder i can confirm these past seasons I have absolutely enjoyed women's football (for the men's team, yes, I know, the lesser said the better). I don't understand people who don't even want to watch it. It's like booing the Wimbledon women's final just because men are stronger.

I'm a big tennis fan. The standard of women's tennis is certainly lower but it also allows a better range of playstyles and match ups. Anyone can beat anyone on their day and that can be really surprising.

I have a feeling Dart might go deep at Wimbledon this year. Fingers crossed.

How should I feel if I was a woman player? And then someone told me "I'm not interested in knowing or learning anything about women players, but no offense intended". I wouldn't be very happy. And definitely I wouldn't understand the "no offense intended" part.

No one has to be interested in anything that they don't have an interest in, obliging people and and labelling them as offensive if they don't is ridiculous. How should the women feel? Well why would they care? There's an ever growing interest in the women's game, so what does it matter of some people aren't interested - i mean should the national Rugby League team be offended or upset if some people say they're just not interested and only want to watch Rugby Union..

People did comment on it and most of it wasn't pretty and was deleted. From the women's football I've seen honestly I haven't been very impressed, the game clearly needs more investment but the level of quality is much lower than a lot of sites like Sky and the BBC of late would have you believe, and the gap between a lot of teams can be enormous (the regularity of heavy score differences say enough about that). I'm glad it's getting more exposure but the top tiers of women's football are far, far away from those of the men's game. There's nothing wrong with that either as the game grows as it cant just instantly match the quality of the best around, but when news organisations try and have you believe they're on a par and thus things like salaries and TV exposure should also be on a par then I'm going to disregard those calls.

The article was not about parity. In that issue I absolutely agree with you.

About quality, I agree that there's still a lot of difference between the few better teams and the rest. But that's improving year after year and precisely in the Euro 2022 you will be able to see the quality ones. Besides, would you rule out rugby union because only a small bunch of nations can actually compete? Have you ever seen a rugby game between England and a good European team as Romania? Absolutely one sided. So, what's the solution? Ruling out rugby union? Or relax and enjoy a 6 Nations game? I vote the latter.

I certainly won't just disregard it or ignore it, crowds for women's football are getting better and quite consistently and it feels like general interest is improving year on year. It's a hard one to compare with other sports I guess, I could enjoy a good women's tennis match as much as a good men's match, will it get to a similar place with football? It's a big gap to close and I'm not sure it'll ever match the speed and intensity that the top tier of the men's game generally has, but it's going in the right direction

I was really impressed by the last women's game I saw but we all have a capacity of how much football we either want to or have time to follow.

Mine is already used up on the Premier League, so that means I can't be bothered to follow what is going on in other men's leagues as well.

Plus having a break from watching football does me good, I appreciate it more when it returns.

The last live game I attended was the week before lockdown ended the season. It was Brora Rangers v Wick Academy. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I'd say top flight women's football is about that or a little higher. So I reckon I'd enjoy a live game alright. But on TV - over here on free TV we get a lot of local matches from Vietnam, Malaysia and places like that. I have absolutely zero interest in watching those games. I only have finite time to take in football, so I restrict that to English Premier League. It's not a criticism of WSL, it's simply priorities.

Would like to see Gk clean sheet point higher than defender.
For example gk get 5 clean sheet point, defender still on 4 points

    1. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years

What I think might work is having 5 points for goals scored from every position, and no clean sheet point for midfielders.
I'd add no baps for goals/assists when the player already wins points for those, and more baps for interceptions and activities associated with holding midfielders. These changes would result in midfielders not being overpowered compared to forwards, and slightly reduce the power of wingbacks, I think.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

A possible issue with that would be that forwards still generally would come off a bit short in comparison to midfielders. I agree that stuff like players getting YCs shouldn't also result in losing bps as they're already losing a point and I'd like to see mids that do more defensive work to be rewarded, but the one benefit forwards have over mids is that they get a more bps for attacking returns. The game is different to before of course so forwards don't just sit at the top of the pitch looking to score and only that, so players like Kane would still pick up points for defensive actions every now and again, but the majority of midfielders are more likely to engage in (successful) defensive actions than the majority of forwards.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years

Right, but forwards would get 5 points instead of 4 for their goals, which should mitigate against the negatives.

          1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 9 months ago

But if they're generally going to be out of the running for any baps (which in this case you'd imagine on most occasions they would be), I think it would make things very unfavourable for them as goalscoring is really the only thing that gives forwards a good chance of picking up bonus pts. If they were to be rewarded with bps for things like shots taken instead then it could work, but given that forwards currently lose bps for shots off target or for not scoring big chances it would effectively be turning the whole current system for forwards on its head.

            1. Andy_Social
              • 13 Years
              3 years, 9 months ago

Sure, I'd be in favour of cutting minus points for shots off target - defenders don't lose baps for missing an interception or tackle. I'd only support minus points for violent red cards and maybe own goals. Maybe if taking chances, hitting woodwork but not scoring gained baps and that evened things out, I'd lobby for that.

Fanteam has points for shot on target (0.4 and 0.6) which I quite like. Also either they or euro 2020 used to give an additional point for long range goals which was a good addition.

Doesn't have to. I just mean more baps for interceptions and tackles. Doesn't matter if your deep-lying playmakers or box-to-boxers get stuck in. But it would be good to encourage getting in midfield players who are unpopular purely because what they excel at isn't rewarded in FPL.

For starters, there’s 2 awesome badges featuring Joe himself, plus a very hairy Az!

And you’ll also get a welcome letter from Neale and Gianni themselves, all wrapped up in an official Fan Club wallet! Sounds good, right?

        Or less excitingly this:

I see, so it means I AM a "premium member". t'riffic - I thought there were extra bells 'n' whistles I was missing out on.

But I asked because Whits says he isn't premium, despite having the little chap by his username.
