The 2022 UEFA European Women’s Football Championship gets underway on July 6 and official sponsors Starling Bank have launched a Fantasy game for the tournament.

Here is a quick guide on how to play the game.

Our friends at Fantasy Football Community will be covering Euro 2022 in more detail as the tournament goes on, from team reveals to chip strategy.

REGISTER TO PLAY WOMEN’S EURO FANTASY FOOTBALL

THE BASICS

Each manager is handed an £84m budget to spend on a maximum of 16 players (11 starters and five substitutes), with a limit of two goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders and five strikers.

The squad can actually be smaller, if you prefer to splash more of the cash on the premium picks.

For the group phase and quarter-finals, you can’t select more than four players from the same nation.

Then, choose a formation (4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 5-3-2, 5-4-1 or 4-5-1), captain, Supersub (more of which below) and bench order.

Players in your squad can even be switched during the round, providing their match hasn’t kicked off.

‘Participants can modify their teams as long as a player’s match hasn’t started (no transfer limit). The change must be within budget and the authorised player limit per nation.’ – Official rules

Player prices rise and fall based on real-life performances, with points doubled for captains.

HOW TO SCORE POINTS

Here is the scoring system for player points, which doesn’t award any bonuses:

GOALKEEPERGoal conceded (penalty): -1Goal conceded (non-penalty): -3Each save: 2
Goal scored (penalty): 15Goal scored (non-penalty): 25Assist: 15
DEFENDERGoal (penalty): 10Goal (non-penalty): 18Assist: 10
MIDFIELDERGoal (penalty): 8Goal (non-penalty): 15Assist: 8
STRIKERGoal (penalty): 6Goal (non-penalty): 12Assist: 6
ALLOwn goal: -5Yellow card: -3Red card: -5

The reason ‘player’ had to be specified is that, unlike in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), each will also score points based on team performance.

Win: 9Draw: 3Lose: -2
Points per goal difference: +/- 2GK clean sheet: 12DEF clean sheet: 6

To slight complicate matters, team points are only applied in proportion to the time spent on the pitch.

‘Example: Wendie Renard (French player) is on the bench but comes on at the beginning of the second half. She then plays 45 minutes and France win 3-1.

The team points will then be nine for the win plus four for the goal difference.

Wendie Renard will then score 13 x 0.5 = 6.5 team points’

So if you start midfielder Alexia Putellas, who scores both a penalty and open-play goal to seal a 3-0 win, she will bag 23 points for the goals, nine for the win and six for the margin of victory. A total of 38 points.

Furthermore, with no appearance points handed out, an outfielder that blanks could easily finish on negative points.

OTHER DIFFERENCES FROM FPL

Customised private leagues let managers alter the limits for starting budget, players per nation and contest duration. If tweaked, there will automatically be a second team created for you.

Meanwhile, those named on your bench will still earn points, just at half the rate of those you started.

However, each game day allows managers to label one of their substitutes as a ‘Supersub’. This player will score triple points but only if she also comes on mid-match. If she starts from kick-off, it will remain half points for your total.

For example, a manager benches Midfielder A but assigns her the ‘Supersub’ privilege. It will be a nervous wait for the teamsheets, as a start for Midfielder A means half points but being named on the bench could lead to a cameo and therefore triple points.

Personally I just use the team stats for looking at defenses (so go into team stats > defending) or individual player stats tables for attackers ( so player stats > forwards or midfielders). Then just sort by whichever stats you want to look at. So for me personally for attack I like xGI, xG, xA, G, A and to a lesser extent shots in the box and big chances (SiB, BC). For defences I look at xG conceded, clean sheets and to a lesser extent SiB conceded and BC conceded. You can also filter by home/away or by date range, which helps if you want to see a period of time - e.g. you might want to see how Newcastle did post January as opposed to the whole season or how a team did once they got a new manager. You can also filter teams played against out of the stats - so if you're e.g. trying to choose between two players with a good run of fixtures you can filter the top 6 out of the stats as stats scored against those teams won't be relevant as your player won't play against them. There's also a 'per 90' filter, which is helpful, it just divides the other stats per minutes 90 minutes. So if one player has played 6 games and another 2 (maybe returning from injury), a per 90 comparison would be more helpful than comparing raw stats.

Anyone else thinking Richarlison is bit overrated? 0.28 npxG and 0.09 xA per game isn't exactly jaw dropping. He isn't bad, but Raphinha is better value for a similiar amount of money imho.

Plus he has a penchant for YCs and is always on the verge of fully losing his 'composure' and getting sent off.
Though surprisingly I see he's only had two PL reds.

The big benefit for Spurs with Richarlison over someone like Raphinha is versatility. One player that can cover both Son on the left and Kane in the middle, and likely Kulu on the right too. Can't remember the last time Spurs had reliable cover for Kane, probably Llorente yet he was a very different player. He also gives Spurs another edge in attack. We've seen what Conte did to both City and Liverpool, with Richarlison there he has a player that has explosive pace and strong running like Son to counter with, and someone that is also decent at holding up the ball and is quite strong at holding off opposition (like Kulu). He also has a certain level of aggression and fight that really that Spurs team doesn't really have right now. As an FPL option he'd only be considered if one of those front 3 face a spell out but he the more I think about it the more I see he's a perfect fit for what Spurs need.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 5 days ago

Is that worth 50ish mln though? He's decent - but I think that's the problem really - if Spurs really want to compete with Liverpool and City they can't just be satisfied with decent transfers, they need to make exceptional transfers like Liverpool does. Luis Dias cost similar, but he is twice the player Richarlison is.

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 5 Years

I think his history has to be taken into context. Is he world class? Of course not, but he still managed to shine at two teams that were relegation candidates in the PL and where he had little support of any decent kind. Even given those circumstances he's Brazil's number 9 which says a lot in his favour. Don't forget that Spurs were very close to completing a deal for Diaz before it was leaked to Liverpool and they jumped in. Spurs then late on brought in Kulusevski who had a huge part to play in Spurs' great end to the season and he wasn't their first choice. Let's see how things go but so far under Conte and Paratici, recruitment has been excellent, I think this move could work out.

          1. Sgt Frank Drebin
            • 9 Years
            4 years, 4 days ago

Kulusevski was a good transfer, I agree. Regarding Richarlison and Diaz, maybe if you don't have any world class players to sign then maybe it's just better to wait until one is available. Just saying that with such transfers Tottenham will never catch up Liverpool and City. They need to introduce the same strategy of stats driven recruitment.

And btw, don't think that being no 9 for Brazil says much, there's very little competition there after all.

I played the actual Euros game once, and I won a prize and they didn't send it to me because only Europeans were allowed to win prizes. I was annoyed. You don't win something in Fantasy Football very often.

IMO Richarlison comes in as a utility player capable of playing across the front line. I expect he will replace Son, Kane and Kulu either as a sub or in a starting position so Spurs can effectively compete in the EPL and UCL. Conte will be utilizing the new 5 subs rule to give important players a break.

I don't see Richarlison as a fantasy asset but rather someone who will take points from important fantasy assets. \0/

Right, but that also makes the big 3 less appealing. And with Contation of his wingbacks, we're down to the keeper and central defenders as viable assets from Spurs.

come on... Kane and Son are going to play the vast majority of minutes. All top teams have to have depth. No top attacking players with champs league football are going to play every game. doesn't mean they are not viable.

        talk about dramatic.

Doesn't have to be 'dramatic'. For me, it might tip the balance between say, Kulusevski and Foden or Saka. I'm likely to go into GW1 with no Spurs assets, which I wasn't expecting.

Yep slightly lowers the appeal of Son and Kane, but not massively.

Chelsea made an attempt to hijack Richarlison deal before agreement between Everton and Tottenham, in place since this morning for £60m.

Chelsea seem to be trying to sign everyone who becomes available. Seems a bit scattergun to me. Not a great sign.

I wonder if they tried this because they wanted him as well as Raphinha or because they think Raphinha is a lost cause now. Time will tell but given Richarlison is going for £60m and Raphinha around £65m and they still haven't even signed one CB, it feels like the latter and I agree. Lots of changes upstairs at Chelsea happening in a key window for them and it's not looking great so far, although there's plenty of time left of course

They should have come to us. We'd let them have Folarin Balogun on loan.

The way the new ownership has started at Chelsea does not look promising.

Not true. Chelsea have long standing transfer targets they are still actively pursuing. I take everything I read like this with a punch of salt
