Reece James (£6.0m) and the fit-again Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) have been priced up identically in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of the relaunch for the 2022/23 season.

Both players are unsurprisingly cheaper than the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m), FPL’s three top-scoring defenders of 2021/22.

While some Fantasy managers will be tempted to punt on a Chelsea defensive double-up, how do Chilwell and James stack up in comparison if it’s an ‘either/or’?

We investigate in this latest Premium Members article.

PERIOD OF ANALYSIS

Typically in pre-season, we concentrate on players’ exploits in the previous campaign.

But Chilwell made only six starts and one substitute appearance in an injury-ravaged 2021/22, so we’ve extended the lookahead to Gameweek 20 of 2020/21 onwards – Thomas Tuchel’s first match in charge of Chelsea – in order to increase the data sample size.

Although we’re mostly comparing James and Chilwell in this article, we’ve also included the same underlying stats for Alexander-Arnold, Robertson and Cancelo for 2021/22 only, just as a point of reference.

GOAL THREAT

PlayerMins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per big chanceMins per shot on target
Chilwell24.352.964.4370.5148.2
James29.358.5110.81033.7221.5
Alexander-Arnold33.256178.4n/a190.3
Robertson27.3141.2231847317.6
Cancelo29.939.8104.1819.3140.3

Chilwell has generally posed the bigger goal threat under Tuchel.

While there isn’t a great deal separating the pair when it comes to minutes per shot (52.9 v 58.5), Chilwell really stands out when it comes to higher quality, close-range efforts.

While just under 50% of James’s shots have been from outside the area, over 80% of Chilwell’s attempts have come from inside the opposition box.

In fact, Chilwell’s stats compare really well with the numbers that Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo and Robertson were posting last season.

He'll start the season and my guess is play 75%+ if Royal goes. Spence will be rotated/subbed on and play cup games. Very similar to Perisic and Sessegnon (if Reguilon goes). Pretty sure that Doherty will be the one Spurs player in my team at the start.

So Son is a midfielder again, and a pricey one at that (£12.0m).

I'd have liked to have seen him as a forward, given that his heat map is very similar to the likes of Jota - and he was often the furthest forward, central player for Spurs. I think they should have made him a £11.0m FWD, alongside a £11.5m Kane, to give us the choice between the two.

When I posted this in the FFS Slack channel I was met with heavy resistance! What do you guys think?

I agree and posed a similar argument at the end of last season. I’ve liked the pricing in general but Son played as a forward last season. Two from Son/Salah/Haaland seems the toughest choice for now.

      1. Andy_Social

I was wondering if people planning on Son and one of Mo/Haa will now go for Mo/Haa.

Also it further isolates KDB as an option.

He is still a mid because he starts as winger in 3-4-3 ? Jota and Havertz were reclassed bcz they start centrally in their team formations.
Still think he is a great pick at 12.

Son is dead in terms of value. £12.0m for someone not on pens and competition from Richarlison.

Their front line is Son Kane Kulu. He's just as much a wide forward as Salah is, so by FPL definition they both should be mids.

I think his price makes it too easy to go Salah. I imagine there will be a stronger template than usual this season unfortunately.

What you think isn't what FPL tower think.
      Just play the game.
We eat what they serve, that's all.

      Of course we can argue.
Before Conte come, Son played at that position already...
His heatmap further than Kane is happened years ago...

I think debating what FPL Towers choose to do is part of the fun. It's why we sit on boards, especially in pre-season, talk about prices, player classifications, chips...

You need to have a good foundation fact for debating
And this topic is out after Salah still classified as mid.

Still a poor and very subjective topic, you can look at upvote that you got as well.

Well he sits in between midfielder and forward, like Salah does.
Same with the wingbacks (sitting in between defenders and mids)
It's an interesting one, I think the game does need to change in some way to cater for this, but not sure what the answer is!

I didn't say that Salah shouldn't... I think there's a debate to be had there as well.

My biggest argument, as it has been for a while now, is that the Midfielder bracket should have a "defensive" and "attacking" classification. Would see players like Salah lose the CS point, 1 less point for a goal (like FWDS) and then you could up the rewards for defensive mids (+1 extra for a goal, +2 CS point etc).

Again though, not everyone will like it, but thats part of the fun! Isn't it?!

Son, Salah and Sterling should be forwards because that's what they are. All this discussion of do they start wide in a three shouldn't be relevant.

The only thing Towers have done right this year is the goalkeeper pricing.

Kane pricing super interesting. Bizarre that they've lowered the striker price ceiling but kept the cheap ones so expensive.

The lowest United and Spurs defender price is on 5 m.
White and/or Tomiyasu could be a very nice bargain this season.

It's funny - the template will be so strong, but it wouldn't surprise me if Son scored a hattrick GW1 then blitzed a disshelved Chelsea GW2.

Coufal challenged by Johnson, White by Saliba plus potentially Martinez. Only Dunk of those is close to nailed.

I don’t really get the argument about Saliba eating into White’s game time in the PL as we’ve seen nothing of him in an Arsenal shirt to indicate he’s going to suddenly walk into the team. Arsenal paid £45m for White last summer and Arteta seems to like a settled defence so I would see any rotation occurring in Europa league games. Coufal vs Johnson is probably trickier.

I'd suggest another 4-5 years in the doldrums for Man Utd, unfortunately.

Another poor transfer window (no Europe of any description a huge kicker) and too many other good teams to choose from for quality players

It's a massive mess that just continues year after year.

Need to try something different to break the cycle, as just chucking huge money at mediocrity will not work.

At least Woodward has gone, that's a big step

          No chance.

Remember, under SAF, when transfers were quietly completed in the off season, and only news came out when confirmed.

Like Man City & Liverpool do know. Means they're in control of the situation.

Loads of speculation & rumours = no control

This will probably be fairly template, but pretty amazed that this team can be built for £99.5. Very tempted by Perisic as fifth defender but I’m currently leaning towards the guaranteed game time for Trippier and having £0.5 ITB for price changes.

    Raya
    Trent - Robbo - James - Cancelo - Trippier
    Salah - Saka - Grealish - Neto
    Haaland

    Bench: 4.0; 4.5 x 3

Nice.... Mount or Bowen for Grealish imo

Yeah I can’t afford either of those with current structure. Grealish is £7m, Mount £8m, and Bowen £8.5m. I think Saka is currently the go to £8m midfielder based on opening fixtures.

Just having a gander at a triple premium 5 atb:

    Meslier, (4)
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Doherty, Cash
    Salah, Martinelli, Neto (4.5), (4.5)
    Haaland, Kane, (4.5)

Probably still makes more sense to downgrade one of the premiums and bring in a couple of midprice mids/fwds, but looks better than I expected. Rotation would be a bit of a nightmare though, especially with the current lack of 4.5 mids. Thoughts?

  29. The Tinkerman
    • 10 Years

Kinda tempted by 442 with Haaland and Kane up top, no Salah, a few of the 8.0 mids in there and a premium back line…

Kane .5 cheaper than Son is very, very tempting honestly. Not overly keen on putting nearly a quarter of the budget into 2 forwards but it's hard to argue with his form at the tail end of last season, he's on pens and I think with someone like Bissouma there he won't need to drop deep into midfield as much as before.

at this stage, Son over Haaland and Kane is an obvious choice in terms of pure individual points scoring imo; the main issue is that you obviously have to have a forward - is Wilson & Son better than Kane & Diaz? possibly not
