More Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player prices for the 2022/23 season are being released and we’re bringing you live updates as and when they drop.

Chelsea were the first club to make an announcement on Sunday morning, with Reece James and Ben Chilwell among the players priced up. West Ham United and Jarrod Bowen then took centre stage at noon, with Newcastle United, Southampton and Bournemouth following on.

CHELSEA

There has been plenty of talk in the Fantasy community over the last month over whether a cheaper Ben Chilwell could ‘cover’ the more expensive Reece James in 2022/23 but what we didn’t anticipate was that FPL would price them identically.

James and Chilwell both start the new season at £6.0m, which is on the generous side for James given his attacking threat. The right-back’s patchy fitness record and the defensive turmoil that Chelsea are facing this summer, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen making an exit, are contributing factors to his cost but there’ll be plenty of takers at that price.

The Blues are near the top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty in the first seven Gameweeks, meeting only Tottenham Hotspur of last season’s top six.

Also to be filed under ‘bargain’ is Edouard Mendy (£5.0m), who like Alisson yesterday has been priced up cheaper than virtually all of us would have predicted. Mendy has fallen one million pounds from last summer and the popularity of the set-and-forget £4.5m FPL shotstopper strategy is certainly being challenged, with Ederson surely set for a lower starting price given what was happened with the goalkeepers of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Thiago Silva (£5.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.5m) were the other Chelsea defensive assets priced up this morning.

Further up the pitch, we have seen the expected positional reclassification of Kai Havertz (£8.0m). The German is now a forward in FPL, with just over 60% of his league appearances for Chelsea last season coming when playing through the middle up front. By our rough calculations, Havertz would have lost 18 clean sheet/goal points had he been a forward in 2021/22 but earned an estimated 10 extra bonus points to partly compensate.

Mason Mount has had a minor price rise to £8.0m following his best-ever season for FPL points. The England international racked up 22 attacking returns from just 27 starts and five substitute appearances, averaging an impressive 6.1 points per start.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.5m), Jorginho (£6.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£6.0m) are the other Chelsea midfielders priced up, while Timo Werner (£8.0m) remains a forward and costs the same as Havertz.

WEST HAM UNITED

Jarrod Bowen‘s (£8.5m) reward for a barnstorming 2021/22 in which he racked up 29 attacking returns and outscored all FPL midfielders bar Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah is a price hike of £2.0m.

In all likelihood, there’ll probably be few initial takers in the right-winger, and not just because of price: West Ham face Man City, Spurs and Chelsea in the opening six Gameweeks, along with big-spending Aston Villa and a deceptively difficult Brighton side.

Michail Antonio (£7.5m) started last season on fire but ended up something of a damp squib, scoring 40 points in the first three Gameweeks but only adding a further hundred in his next 33 run-outs. FPL have consequently decided to leave him static at £7.5m, and again there will likely be limited interest come Gameweek 1.

There are some potential future bargains in defence if new signing Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m) can help tighten up a backline that kept more shut-outs than just four other teams in 2021/22.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) and Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) have offered decent attacking threat and returns over the last two FPL seasons but that sometimes hasn’t been backed up with clean sheets at the other end. FPL have thus dropped them both half a million in price.

Aguerd is highly rated and was part of a Rennes side that had the third-best defensive record in Ligue 1 over the two seasons he was at the French club.

Ben Johnson, a bargain-bin £4.0m in 2021/22, is similarly available at £4.5m this time around.

In midfield, Declan Rice (£5.0m), Said Benrahma (£6.0m), Pablo Fornals (£5.5m), Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m) and Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) have also been priced up today.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

There are some potential FPL bargains from big spenders Newcastle United, who have been splashing the Saudi cash this summer on new recruits.

The Magpies will have designs on a top 10 finish next season, with heavy investment set to continue over the next two months.

One of their recent arrivals, Nick Pope, starts life on Tyneside at £5.0m. FPL royalty Pope will hopefully be playing under better defenders than he was at Burnley but still not quite at the top-level standard where he’ll be deprived of the save points that have helped boost his appeal over the years. Still, with Chelsea’s Mendy surprisingly listed at £5.0m and Alisson only half a million more expensive, the appeal of mid-price goalkeepers outside the top four has taken a bit of a dent.

Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett also both come in at £5.0m, meanwhile. Since making his debut in Gameweek 24 last season, the corner-taking Targett ranked fifth among defenders for chances created and second for successful crosses. But it’s Trippier who is probably the slightly bigger draw, with the England international not only on a share of indirect dead-ball duties too but a whizz at direct free-kick situations, as well.

Dan Burn (£4.5m) and Fabian Schar (£4.5m) are cheaper routes into the Magpies’ defence but one of them could make way for the as yet unpriced Sven Botman.

Newcastle are second in our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty between Gameweeks 6-15 and also entertain newly promoted Nottingham Forest on the opening weekend.

Further forward, Callum Wilson stays at £7.5m despite another injury-ravaged campaign. His record at Newcastle overall is pretty elite, with 20 goals, six assists and 204 FPL points arriving in 39 starts. String that record together over the course of one campaign (minus the 39th game!) and you’re into ‘Team of the Season’ territory, although ever-present status has been a pipe dream when it comes to Wilson.

Allan Saint-Maximin has been reclassified as a midfielder and now costs £6.5m, while influential January signing Bruno Guimaraes has moved up from £5.0m to £6.0m. Joelinton (£6.0m) is also now an FPL midfielder following his redeployment in the engine room under Eddie Howe.

Joe Willock (£5.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.0m) are kindly priced but reliable game-time may well be an issue when Howe has a fully fit squad at his disposal.

SOUTHAMPTON

There’ll be precious little initial interest in FPL assets from Southampton, with the Saints facing a tough run of fixtures in the opening five Gameweeks and finishing 2021/22 in limp fashion.

Now minus Armando Broja and with Tino Livramento potentially sidelined until 2023, there aren’t too many players from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad on the Fantasy watchlist.

James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) is about the pick of a mediocre bunch, with the midfielder not just reliable for starts last season (as always) but also having his best-ever season for FPL points. The penalty-taking, free-kick-scoring, corner-delivering England international has the monopoly on set plays at Southampton and has banked 15 attacking returns in each of the last two seasons.

He finished just outside of the 10 top-scoring FPL midfielders of 2021/22 but hasn’t risen in price.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), Jan Bednarek (£4.5m), Romain Perraud (£4.5m) and Mohammed Salisu (£4.5m), part of a defence that shipped goals for fun at the back-end of last season, are all priced the same as one another, while new signing Gavin Bazunu joins the £4.5m goalkeeper club. New centre-half Armel Bella-Kotchap is, you guessed it, also at £4.5m.

Che Adams (£6.5m), Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), Stuart Armstrong (£5.0m) and Oriol Romeu (£5.0m) were also part of today’s reveal.

BOURNEMOUTH

Bournemouth’s very own penalty-taking talisman comes in at half a million cheaper than Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m).

Dominic Solanke was priced up at £6.0m by FPL on Sunday evening and is unsurprisingly the Cherries’ most expensive asset.

The former Liverpool striker played a direct part in just under 50% of the goals that Scott Parker’s scored in their promotion-winning campaign – and that’s without looking at ‘Fantasy assists’ for things like shot rebounds.

FPL have applied a broad £5.5m brush stroke across anyone else of attacking note from the Bournemouth squad, with wingers David Brooks, Jaidon Anthony and Ryan Christie and forward Kieffer Moore all available this price. So too is Philip Billing, who hit double figures for both goals and assists last season in a more advanced central midfield role than we were previously accustomed to seeing him in.

Lewis Cook, a deep-lying playmaker who posed little attacking threat in the Championship, might be overpriced even at £5.0m.

At the back, we’ve got a clean sweep of £4.5m assets.

New signing Ryan Fredericks, attack-minded left-back Jordan Zemura and centre-half Lloyd Kelly are all at this price point, along with the Championship ‘Golden Glove’ winner, Mark Travers.

      Yep.

You can get Coufal, White, Tomiyasu etc. for £4.5m. Are you really going to go for a Bournemouth defender when Arsenal and West Ham defenders (and we still haven't seen Spurs, Leicester etc.) are available for the same price?

The only 4m defender revealed is a new kid way down the pecking order. I suspect any other 4m defenders will also be surefire 0 pointers all season. But I am beginning to wonder if there are no 4.5 mids/fwds at all this year. I'd have to lop off 2m in my current draft just to make up a bench, somewhat ruining my perfect Starting XI. That might be the plan.

Based on the Bournemouth prices, I honestly think one of FPL’s main motivations is trying to avoid offending players by making them cheaper than everyone else.

Not sure about that. Isn't it more offensive to have 0% ownership?
But I am beginning to wonder if FPLTowers have done a canny tweak here. They've lowered the average prices of goalkeepers and defenders - and midfielders, but given us the whammy of no/few 4.0 keepers and defenders, and no 4.5 mids or fwds, forcing us to spend more on benches however useless.

        yeah

When I think back, nearly every team over the years has been 3-4-3, maybe 3-5-2. If the shift is now towards a bigger back then that there's a lot more scope for variety

I'm an advocate of expensive defense with these current prices but its pretty fascinating to see what you can do with the steals in the 4.5-5.0 category:

    Raya (4.0)
    Trippier, Targett, Cash, Tomiyasu (Jonny)
    Salah, Son, Saka, Diaz, Rashford
    Haaland (4.5, 4.5)

What am I not understanding with Raya as the 4.5m goalie of choice? I prefer Sanchez by a lot. Brighton are a stronger team and finished 9th last year. Brentford going into their second season with not much reinforcement. Is it really just saves?

But honestly, I'm likely to just go Mendy at 5.0m. Crazy price.

No Bissouma. Think Brighton only won 1 of something like 11 games without him last season, he'll be a big miss. Possibly Cucurella gone too and they missed Burn after he left too until Cucurella settled in

Brentford top of the opening fixtures list for defence.
But I agree, Brentford may struggle a bit this year. Brighton might feel the loss of Bissouma - I'm hesitant enough over the 4.5 options to upgrade to a 5.0. There is real quality there in abundance. I'm waiting for Lloris, surely 5.0 behind a Conte-organised defence.

how is xGC different from xGA? genuine question, no idea - and couldn't one conclusion be that the keeper isn't that good? like when a striker underperforms his xG kinda thing; ie not just luck based

Hmm I just double checked. Turns out I was wrong. They overperformed their xGC. Expected to concede 39 and conceded 33.

They were still clearly the 3rd best defense in the league. A goalie from the 3rd best defense in the league should not be 5.0m.

I disagree. They will be fine. They will sign players and Tuchel is a good coach with a strong emphasis on defense first. They also have some of the best shielding midfielders in the league.

Who? Kante is old and now injury-prone, and Jorginho and Kovacic (and Gallagher) are not holding mid types. It's the one area Chelsea are not targeting for reinforcement. Gilmour doesn't cut it. i see a problem there.

Kante is still elite and Jorginho and Kovacic are perfectly good for shielding the defense even though they aren't strictly holding mids. Keeping the ball is one of the best ways to prevent opponents from scoring.

Sanchez doesn't get save points, he is a crap pick.

He seems like the kind of player that could go under the radar all season whilst quietly being great value. A JWP-type.

Depends on incomings. I had him during that purple patch last season (including the DGW) but it coincided with a Willock injury and then another injury after he returned for a game or so. If Willock looks like picking up form or any sort of attacking midfielder is signed I expect him to mostly focus on defensive work

It certainly looks beautiful, but once you crunch the numbers I reckon you'd find the lost captaincy points is greater than the value gained by spreading the cash.

You'd be surprised. Captains are huge in this game.

If you captained Salah every game you'd essentially have two Salahs for 6.5m each. That would be insane value, and trump any value you can find elsewhere, even in defence. Obviously you wouldn't captain him every game, but that puts into context just how extreme the value gains are from captaincy.

            1. Riska
              • 14 Years

I definitely see your point and I do think you're right overall. Playing devil's advocate, if I extrapolate that math. Let's take a Salah draft I did:
              Salah, Son, Martinelli, Neto, Elanga = 6.5 Salah+6.5 Salah+11.5+6+5.5+5= 41
              vs this 5
Diaz Saka Foden Maddison Mount = 5x8 = 40 with one of those being a 4.0 version of themselves... would I take a 4.0 Mount? I think I might

Obviously I recognise what you're saying is Salah at 6.5 would be insane value and you can't argue with that. I'm not 100% convinced it would be that much more value vs a spread, though.

A 5.5m Johnson would be straight in my team. I imagine he'll be 6.0 like Solanke tbh.

He is only deployed in a front two however, so if Bournemouth are deploying a 352 in pre-season, he could well be an option at 5.5m.

Moore will get minutes for Bournemouth.

It’s just a shame he’s not £5.0 as he’d be an ideal 3rd striker you could bench knowing you’ll get the odd 2 pointer out of him, if called upon.

Keep ending up with Haaland only up front and two waster 4.5’s. Gradually not warming to this as when he is rested I’ll only end up with 10 players and those 4.5 fwd’s won’t play / come on if the rules stay with you having to have at least 1 fwd.

Maybe Undav as a back up for redundancy… wish was more appetizing 5.5’s forwards and below.

I don't think it's so much the price (as mentioned above) but more where the money is being spent. I was quite happy to support Mark when he was running this out of his back bedroom. When this place was a close knit community and had an identity I could relate to. 12 years on, the money now seems to spent on employing 'content providers' on social media. None of which I'm interested in. There's been at least two member's polls in the past five years and nothing changes. Nothing. Can anyone recall a more antiquated comments board (that they frequently visit) that is more outdated than this?

All the data available in the member's area is not exclusive to FFS, and available elsewhere for free. Its just a few more clicks. So yes, I resigned my membership after 12 years as I see zero value in it.

Salah Trippier/Cash/Gabriel and Watkins/Wilson v Maddison, James and Haaland? Tough one, thoughts?

Really comes down to Salah Vs Haaland as presumably they will frequently be captain too. Salah the safer bet.

      Reya (4.0)
      TAA Robbo Cancelo James Chillwell
      Salah Odegaard Harrison Neto (4.5)
      Haaland Johnson (4.5)

      Set and forget defence.
      Captaincy switch between 2.
Rotation / transfers between 3 mids and 1 forward.

      Easy.

      I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of 4.5 strikers/mids, 4.0 defenders/keepers.

The only people interested in these early prices are people like us who'd begin planning, the casual/less than casual isn't going to know the significance of the above price points at this stage.

It's just to get us thinking before the big overall reveal.

Cook at 5 seems a bit much

I'm starting to wonder could FPL be tweaking their pricing model to make 5m the minimum for mids/forwards. This would then indirectly drive up the cost of going big at the back. Obviously we cant say for certain but Romeu and Cook fairly scream 4.5m mid whilst Gelhardt jumping to 5.5m seems steep unless you were to consider 5m the base fodder price
