Next up in our price list dissection is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forwards that cost between £4.5m and £6.0m. We pick out the best options in a category that looks sparse.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re focusing mostly on Gameweeks 1-8 for these articles.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

BRYAN MBEUMO (£6.0m)

As of now, very little stands out in the £6.0m-and-under category of forwards due to a mixture of poor teams, poor fixtures and the uncertainty of rotation. Bryan Mbeumo slays those demons, at least.

Two goals from his first two pre-season outings looks good, following a solid FPL season of four goals, seven assists and 119 points. A league-high six of Mbeumo’s shots hit the woodwork, suggesting more than a degree of bad luck, while he was also seventh amongst midfielders for shots on target (56).

Yet his poor shot accuracy (26%) and goal conversion (5.2%) rates were a problem. Combine that with his reclassification as a forward, where penalty-taking teammate Ivan Toney costs just £1m more, and his appeal starts to drift a tad.

Since Thomas Frank switched to a 4-3-3 in the final quarter of 2021/22, he’s also been playing in a wider role rather than up top in a 3-5-2.

Another factor is Brentford’s form without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). Before the Dane made his full debut in Gameweek 28, they had just one win from their previous 11 encounters and were spiralling down the league. With Eriksen now at Manchester United, the Bees will need a new creative source.

BRENNAN JOHNSON / TAIWO AWONIYI (£6.0m)

Nottingham Forest use a 3-4-1-2 system, so both Brennan Johnson and Taiwo Awoniyi are expected to start up top ahead of new signing Jesse Lingard (£6.5m) in the hole. It’s a formation that brought 70 goals during Steve Cooper’s 41 league and play-off matches, with Johnson scoring 15 times in the final 28 of those games.

On penalties and heavily involved in set plays in pre-season, he also ended the campaign with ten assists, although some of the FPL community were disappointed to see him labelled as a forward.

Positional data from Transfermarkt

24-year-old Awoniyi has arrived in a deal believed to be worth £17m. As mentioned in our recent Scout Report, he is a strong dribbler and finisher, having also played in a similar formation at Union Berlin to end last season on 15 goals from 31 appearances. He’s looked a tad off the pace in pre-season, however, so may take a while to get up to Premier League intensity.

As a newly-promoted side that has lost several significant loanees from last year, it feels like Forest need to be watched before a purchase is made, especially with back-to-back Gameweeks against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Gameweek 6 could be a good time to pounce, if the signs are encouraging.

DOMINIC SOLANKE (£6.0m)

If it wasn’t for the freakish number of Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m) goals in last season’s Championship, the exploits of Dominic Solanke would have gained much more attention.

The one-cap England international initially gained Premier League experience during his first year at Liverpool but, halfway through the 2018/19 season, grabbed headlines with an eye-watering £19m move to Bournemouth.

His reputation was damaged by only netting three times in one-and-a-half top-flight seasons but the 24-year-old has slowly rebuilt it with 15 goals in 2020/21 and another 29 in 2021/22.

He has been a nailed starter under Parker to date, is on penalties (he converted four of the five spot-kicks he took in 2021/22) and is something of a talisman, having played a direct part in just under 50% of the goals that the Cherries scored in their promotion-winning campaign – and that’s without looking at ‘Fantasy assists’ for things like shot rebounds.

For a player whose game involves dropping into deeper positions, all 29 of his league goals came from inside the opposition area, with the vast majority being close-range strikes.

The Cherries aren’t attracting attention from FPL managers and a difficult start is likely part of this with trips to Man City and Liverpool to come by Gameweek 4. As is the case with Forest, the fixtures look better once we get towards September.

OTHER CANDIDATES

If Deniz Undav (£5.5m) and Julio Enciso (£5.0m) were the clear first choices at Brighton and Hove Albion, they’d be extremely popular picks amongst the community. Signed by the Seagulls in January, Undav continued the season in Belgium with Union SG to eventually finish on 25 goals.

This followed two successive campaigns with 17 strikes, showcasing a wonderful scorer’s instinct. However, the FPL problem regards Graham Potter’s rotation tendencies.

There are also occasions where Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) is deployed as a false nine. Minutes continue to be shared during pre-season, as Brighton’s first friendly saw separate XIs for each half and the second – a 4-1 win over Estoril – brought a goal for Undav but also two for Neal Maupay (£6.5m).

It’s similar at Crystal Palace, although their difficult run of early fixtures can at least give managers time to observe. Between them, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Odsonne Edouard and Christian Benteke (£5.5m) bagged 15 goals and six assists but only Edouard ever started more than four consecutive games.

Many FPL managers are planning to start with at least one £4.5m forward, such is the number of defensive and midfield temptations. Unless Liam Delap (£4.5m) moves to Southampton, as rumoured recently, there aren’t any real stand-out names.

Sam Greenwood (£4.5m) could continue to see minutes as a substitute at Leeds (often deeper than his Fantasy position suggests), while Cameron Archer (£4.5m) is a promising talent but ultimately at least third in line for a striking spot at Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Adam Armstrong (£5.5m) could benefit if the Saints fail to buy another forward but the likelihood of Patson Daka (£6.0m) or Chris Wood (£6.0m) getting significant game time is small as things stand.

James is out given Chelsea’s appalling displays ; same with Mendy ; Diaz is going to rotate too much for my liking, Bailey and Martinelli are risky.

Koulibaly will stabalize the defence. chelsea defence was all over the place in a 4-2-2-2 system. once they reverted to back 3 they were ok against arsenal

Diaz is good for minuites with Jota injured. Apart from Salah i see him getting most minuites out of Jota/Firmino/Nunez as he' a more natural left winger compared to others

Martinelli in great form in preseason and in an inform arsenal attack i can see it continuing in PL due to great fixtures. ESR injury makes martinelli good to start with

Bailey is a punt sure. but if he clicks he's great value enabling big hitters in your team

Mendy isn't great in FPL, Raya has competition
TAA Cancelo James speak for themselves. Perisic unknown and half of Arsenal defence is out injured.
Salah Diaz look great, personally I'm going KDB over Salah though. Wont touch United yet and Martinelli is still a risk with Nketia on fire. Neto and Bailey look like bargains but better to start with Neto as lots of good options at 5.5.
Haaland cant even last a half yet so I'm going Kane over him. Jesus looks like one of the best FPL assets.

My take is he's red hot in pre-season and I think he'll get the minutes this time. But he's not the best FPL asset - he'll win the free kicks and assist the assister more than chalking up points for himself.

I see Haaland was taken off at just 40 mins, not very inspiring, no other subs made at the same time either. Will have to see how long he lasts in the community shield before firmly deciding on him or going with KDB for a bit. Would rather just start with Haaland as I'm probably more likely to stick with him for longer but if he's likely only able for 50-60 mins for the first few weeks then it's not ideal.

I know it's a friendly but those match stats are extremely impressive for City. 22 shots with 5 on target for City, only 3 shots and 0 on target for Bayern.

I know but still, something to keep an eye on given Pep said he'll take no risks early on with him. I imagine he should be fine given there are full weeks between the first 4 GWs before the CL kicks in but certainly need to be aware of it

It's one of the reasons I'm doing my damndest to try to keep back 0.5 itb.
I want to have the option to switch Kane to Haaland without being forced into it on Sunday night only to learn midweek that Haaland has a minor knock and gets rested for Bournemouth. That would be season over!

I can see karma biting them in a couple of years. It's not about UEFA - the Spanish FA are now strict on finances. If they stiff more players over money owed like they're doing to De Jong, I can see a massive fire sale of players they can't pay and can't register.

What's everyone's take on Chelsea defence so far?
Should we invest in one right from the start or should it be more or less a wait and watch?

I am inching more towards wait and watch because of 2 reasons.

    1. Pre season not being in a good form (yet)
    2. general lack of results at Goodison even though Everton are one to target plus having second week vs Conte team..

    1. Andy_Social
      • 14 Years

      My take:
      pre-season results are meaningless
      new acquisitions not in yet
what is relevant is the formation and tactics manager is developing - a 2 CB and fullback defence is not encouraging
everton is a gimme, but spurs are up gw2.

Conclusion: I'll not start with Chelsea defenders - I'll take the first 2 GWs to observe.

Sanchez season long, but I think a case can be made for Meslier when looking at the first 8 GWs where they play only one side that finished top 8 last season. Cant see Leeds being any worse defensively than last year, can only improve and Meslier does have a penchant for saves.

I love Sterling's potential combined with his lack of investment by most of the community. Had him in my side til my most recent change, and he is still very much in the thinking come deadline day.

    Kulu and Mahrez.
Both in the team is way too risky with a weak bench?

    1. @FuzzyWarbles
      • 16 Years

I'd say both are the sort to wait for them to start firing then get on the bandwagon rather than start the season with them. I just think Diaz/Saka/Mount offer plenty of potential that Kulu and Mahrez do plus more confidence in starts. Perhaps less so for Diaz, but I still think he's a better option that the pair you are considering.

Budget FWD column...perfect topic to present my squad IF come deadline I am confident Haaland will start.

Here's the deal. What's more predictable with defenders? Attacking returns or clean sheets? I would say, without hesitation, the latter. So, with that in mind, I set out to buiild a squad that is solid defensively for clean sheets, both in terms of season-long, but in the short term "window-til-the-first-wildcard" as well.

    Mendy (4.0)
    Robertson, Walker, Tomiyasu, Jonny (Willams)
    Salah, Diaz, Bailey (Andreas, Dasilva)
    Kane, Haaland, Jesus

Balanced? No. Just about every squad combo I try, as expected, there is some level of FOMO. This one has the least FOMO. Basically, the attacking returns of some of the more premium defenders. And for a "weak bench", the crop this season I think is one of the stronger for min-priced options. Im already planning in GW3 to start Andreas (BRE) over Jonny (tot).

By GW6, some of this gets tough. ARS fixtures, AVL's...but for the first 5 GWs, which to me, given the WC situation, is all you need to worry about planning for from the start...there isn't a single fixture for a player I intend to start that makes me go "ouch". I'm not sure I've ever felt as "relaxed" about a side for a stretch as long as 5GWs.

Again, Tomiyasu status will need to be confirmed. If no dice, boring Ben White may have to do, Dalot is also still in the thinking. And if I'm not excited by White or whoever after 2 GWs, no issues spending an FT on a Brentford replacement given their run GW3 on. With all these other stud-like starters though, I dont feel any need to panic and jump on those early week Benrhama bandwagons we get every season. Maybe Diaz is the most risky...well, given the plethora of options at that price point, no issues using that spot to switch to whichever 8m mid gets off to a hot start. That leaves one potential snag, can I find a replacement near Bailey's price point should his preseason form immediatley vanish come regular season? If that's the biggest worry about the shape of my side, I can live with that.

    There's the reasoning. So...now the question...am I mad?

FOMO = Foden Out, Mahrez Out!

I am considering that. Except Meslier over Sanchez. But yeah, that will be a deadline day decision. I did fail to be honest in the post to say its not easy to pass on Trent. But hey, Robertson's no slouch.

Not mad at all. Im targeting fixtures and clean sheets on a budget. Ait nouri and justin rotating. Trippier in. Neco and andreas both cover gw 3 and 5 for trip

        • 16 Years

Ait Nouri, Ait Nouri...another deadline day decision. He's more "exciting" than Jonny but I do at the moment feel a bit more secure with Jonny. Yeah there are definitely some gameweeks to target where one can make use of the likes of Andreas. That's why I'm forgoing the typical balanced appraoch and using midfield for two bench spots.

If I am in a draft league, I'd take Lingard first. But, even though fixtures shouldn't be the only factor in choosing between two options, it cannot be ignored that Wolves have an extremely kinder opening schedule than Forest do. They are pretty much at opposite ends of the spectrum. I'd say roll Neto for the opening rounds, when NFO's matchups start looking more attractive, by then you'll have plenty of time to free up .5m somewhere to bring in Lingard.

I’m a big fan and spending an extra $0.5 on my 1st sub as I figure you need them most weeks anyway….but Andreas kinda covers that spot this season without spending extra. I’m still trying to squeeze Bailey in as a 4th midfielder though

Guys I’m struggling a little with the appeal of Zincenko. He’s had 8 assists in the last 7 seasons. His minutes have been a little low (understandable) but he’s also played for a team that scores a lot of goals.

In the system Arsenal play, if he moved to the midfield that would be worse than LB imo. Can’t see him playing LW. Then there’s Tierney there to greatly complicate things.

I agree if Arsenal were to move to wingbacks and he was starting LWB, with Tierney LCB then that’s different….but I guess I just see options at $4.5m just as good. Am I missing something?

Definitely the strongest bench I've seen yet in terms of player's length of last names. 😉

Mendy down to 4.5 would be the go then… who is the best option? Raya?

My latest tweaks leave me a cool 1.5m itb. I definitely want 0.5 for price rises, but the rest of the 1.0m?

I could upgrade my 4.5 forward to a 5.5 but there's none that interest me.
I could upgrade my 4.5 midfielder to a 5.5, but I have Neto and Bailey and no others interest me.
I can't upgrade to an 8m mid (unless it's Martinelli and downgrade my keeper but I don't want to do that).
I'm most likely to upgrade my 4.5 defender to a 5.0 or 5.5 - that means Dalot to Peresic (?) or someone else, but I'm actually quite happy with Dalot.
My Starting XI with Neto first bench looks quite fine to me - I might even keep it all in the bank to give me plenty of leeway going forward.
