Two more pre-season friendlies took place on Wednesday and we’ve got all the goal, assist and line-up information as well as the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points in this latest Scout Notes article.

We’re also keeping tabs on the minutes played in all of these warm-up fixtures, with Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout able to access this information at the bottom of this article.

RB SALZBURG 1-0 LIVERPOOL

Match highlights

Jurgen Klopp named a mostly second-string Liverpool side for Wednesday’s defeat to RB Salzburg, with Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) in the line-up.

Whether that means anything for the Uruguayan’s Gameweek 1 starting prospects remains to be seen, as Jurgen Klopp had also initially selected Roberto Firmino (£8.0m) alongside Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Luis Diaz (£8.0m) in last week’s thrashing of RB Leipzig – a match that Darwin scored four goals in as a substitute.

Two more Reds matches are to come before we reach Gameweek 1, starting with the Community Shield on Saturday, so we’ll have more selection information to go off by the time next Friday comes around.

Darwin and the rest of his teammates drew a blank in Austria, although the new signing struck the bar and had another big chance blocked by a last-gasp tackle. The positive takeaway is that the openings kept coming, as they did in his previous pre-season appearances, even if Klopp was unhappy at the support his new striker was receiving.

“We set the boys up and it’s all fine, they can do much better and they had good moments as well. But especially the first half, the majority of players have to get used to what we do. Darwin was much too often alone. Everybody dropped, everybody was involved in the build-up but too wide and we could only pass the ball to Darwin in the box. He had his moments and nearly scored, but he needs much more support around him. You keep other players busy that they cannot focus on him. So many things.

“Second half, imagine now Darwin would have been there in the box, that would have helped as well. It is like it is – doesn’t feel great, but we take it and go from here.” – Jurgen Klopp

Most of the big guns entered the fray on the hour-mark, with the team that ended the match probably the one we will see against Manchester City this weekend.

Liverpool’s threat predictably ratcheted up a notch after the first-team regulars were introduced, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Firmino, Salah and Diaz all forcing saves as the pressure mounted.

There was still no Alisson (£5.5m), who hasn’t featured since the defeat to Manchester United earlier this month, although Klopp did say he was “close” ahead of the Salzburg match:

“Obviously Diogo [Jota] is not here, that’s clear, but from the boys who are injured but are here, Ali is the closest – definitely not for Salzburg but then we will see. He is close to get back I think.” – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Mabaya (Alexander-Arnold 60), Konate (Matip 60), Gomez (Van Dijk 60), Milner (Robertson 46), Bajcetic (Fabinho 60), Keita (Morton 46, Henderson 60), Jones (Thiago 60), Elliott (Salah 60), Carvalho (Diaz 60), Nunez (Firmino 46)

SOUTHAMPTON 3-1 MONACO

  • Goals: A Armstrong, S Armstrong, Ward-Prowse
  • Assists: Elyounoussi, Aribo, Walker-Peters

Match highlights

No matter what the official Southampton website might try and tell you about their side’s starting formation, Ralph Hasenhuttl persisted with his pre-season 3-5-2 experiment in Wednesday’s win over Monaco and finally saw his side emerge as victors.

“It was a good test for us and we tried to play football, we tried to press high with this shape and there were some interesting performances from some players, I must say. We can see that the goals are there and that’s what we wanted. The young players are pushing and the older, more experienced players are stepping up.

“Especially after the first games that haven’t been so good, I must say, trying to find the way with this formation and shape, it is getting better and better.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

The game also marked the return to action of Romain Perraud (£4.5m) and Nathan Redmond (£5.5m), both making their first appearances of pre-season as wing-backs, while the recently returned James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) built up his own fitness with a second-half cameo and trademark strike from distance.

Ward-Prowse is certainly one potential beneficiary of this formation change: already such a threat from set plays and penalty kicks, the midfielder will be allowed a little more freedom to get forward in open play as an ‘eight’ rather than a ‘six’ of the old system – something underscored by his goal on Wednesday.

Adam Armstrong (£5.5m) prodded in from close range to equalise after Saints had conceded the opening goal, with FPL midfielders Joe Aribo (£5.5m) and Stuart Armstrong (£5.0m) later being deployed ‘out of position’ up top – not for the first time this season in either case – and combining for the hosts’ second strike.

“As a striker, he has more freedom for what he can do. He was driving with the ball. It’s not so dangerous when he loses it because you have enough players to defend. I like this position for him.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Stuart Armstrong, July 23

New striker Sekou Mara (£5.5m) will make his debut this weekend against Villarreal and will soon provide more orthodox competition to Adam Armstrong and Che Adams (£6.5m) in attack.

Southampton XI (3-5-2): McCarthy; Valery (Bednarek 89), Lyanco (Bella-Kotchap 77), Stephens; Perraud (Djenepo, 46); Diallo, Romeu, Elyounoussi (Aribo 65), Redmond (S. Armstrong 70); Adams (Ward-Prowse 65), A. Armstrong (Walker-Peters 65)

Is James still not good value at 6m considering how explosive he can be? Yes Chelsea might not be defensively sound at the start, but when you look at their opponents other than Spurs and Liverpool in the first 8 gws, you’d still fancy some decent returns. Even if they don’t keep a CS he’ll still offer attacking threat?

Yeah but in a way they are, as they’re quite happy to pay 5.5 for Neto in a Wolves team that are terrible offensively. So for me .5 more for someone who could contribute with attacking points in any given game, and potentially have the CS points on top, screams better value

Let's see if they can get some decent CB's in. And what happens with Azpi.

He's still a good pick. Chelsea are not gonna be bad. Preseason matters a lot less than people think.

I just don't think he's worth starting with because of the likelihood he plays RCB.

You can’t really plan them anyway, too many unforeseen events occur.

Between GW6-9. 6 so that the transfer window has closed, 9 as the international break is then so can fix any injury issues and with the World Cup there’s no value in waiting longer.

Earlier than 6 is not impossible but would be an admission of failure by me

Still on this after a few days, who would be your two favourite 4.5 defenders to put in here?

    Meslier

    TAA - Robertson - Saliba - Dalot

    Salah - Martinelli - Bailey

    Kane - Haaland - Jesus

Despite the article, still feeling quite optimistic about Darwin. Thoughts on this draft please:

    Sánchez; Steele
    Cancelo; Zinchenko; Alexander-Arnold; Trippier; N.Williams
    Bailey; Salah; Neto; Martinelli; Dewsbury-Hall
    Darwin; Kane; Jesus

Maybe too strong a bench but think I've got rotation right for the first 8 GWs (Kane to Haaland GW2 probs)

    Cheers guys

Could almost bench boost that in GW1.

Personally I don’t think Darwin is worth a 9m risk to start the season, but I think he looks a great player from what I’ve seen of him so can definitely see myself owning him at some point.

I’m steering clear of Chelsea all together to start the season (and I’m a Chelsea fan!) so don’t mind that. I do like having at least one 8m mid given how many good options there are so even if you pick one who doesn’t go well you can easily swap over to another.

So Darwin to 4.5 and KDH to Diaz and still have another 1m to play with.

              • 8 Years
              4 years, 25 days ago

Not ideal having a 4.5 forward, but I think with the 5 subs even when players are benched they’ll be more likely to come on. So 2 playing bench players should hopefully be enough for now. Once team value is up and budget stars emerge it’s easier to build up the bench for the busy periods.

Been so busy tinkering with my team that now it’s time to think more about strategy.

My best 3 results are 11k, 28k and 33k so I’m definitely nothing special. I’ve never been one to get far into stats. I love watching as many games as possible, not just for FPL, but also just because I love football. So most of my decisions are based on eye tests for players and teams.

I have historically taken more hits than I probably should have and think I’m going to try and reduce hits this time around as I’ve probably wasted too many points.

    Questions:
What is a reasonable amount of hits in a season by those who do well? Or does it vary a lot?

Do those who do well generally dive deep into stats or are there some who prefer the eye test like me?

Any other tips you experts feel like sharing?

    Thanks all!

Thanks mate! I was so close to top 20k last season, just blew it in the final 2 GWs. So this season I’d like to crack top 20k.

That’s 3 top 50k in about 12 seasons. So consistency let’s me down. Definitely had a few of those seasons where I haven’t played out the full season for one reason or another.

you do yourself down ,three top 40k is jolly good,12 to 15 hits for me most years is my norm,i also love footy and rely on the eye test, also there are some good ideas to be gleaned on this forum which can assist,my big problem is stubborness ,i never seem to fail to hop onto the right bandwagons eg last year i never owned son, cancelo or bowen and in the past yaya stands out,g/l for this year.

Cheers mate. Maybe it’s because I’ve got 2 mates who’ve made top 1k!

I definitely used to be stubborn, but after saying all the way though Mahrez magical Leicester title season ‘he won’t keep doing it’ I’ve certainly changed! Couldn’t believe I never backed down on that one.

Those are very good finishes mate! I rely pretty much on eye test and general feel/instinct. I read quite a bit about footie in papers etc as well as here. Don’t watch any content on YouTube and not huge on Twitter.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve taken away from last few seasons is to trust my instinct more and not be afraid to go against the template at any given point.

For the hits, I’ve been fairy liberal with them previously, but have been reining them in and I think I did 20 last season. Good luck with the season!

              Sure. From GW16 (Conte's 1st match was GW11):
              Son 22 starts. 17G 7A. 177pts. 8PPG
              Kane 24 starts. 16G 10A (same as above). 159pts. 6.6PPG.

Kane does trump Son on xG for either period.

        Son's goal conversion was 31%, Kane's was 14%.

Son will maintain a high goal conversion rate but it will still come down a bit, whereas Kane has plenty of room to grow and do better.

You go big up top, there’s nobody else.

Man Utd don’t have a Sanchez in midfield do they? Do you mean Sancho?

Team looks good though. I’m not keen on Walker/Doh but like it otherwise

            My bad Sancho.
I have a mil to change the 2 you mention, week 2 or 3.

Missing piece now (gone Cancelo haha). Which one?

    A) Ederson, James, Chilwell
    B) Mendy, Trippier, Jesus

Worried about Chelsea playing a back 4 or using James as a right center back. B gives a bit better flexibility and does not fill all my City spots if I want to do Kane>Haaland. I think A has better potential though.

      B

But I'm not sold personally on Mendy or Chilwell

A with 1 Chelski only IMO

B with Ramsdale (depending on how many Arsenal players you have)

Cheers everyone. B leaves me with this. Seems balanced to chop and change.

      Mendy
      Zinchenko - TAA - Trippier - Cancelo
      Salah (C) - Luis Diaz - Martinelli - Grealish
      Kane - Jesus

      Bench: Steele - N. Williams - Andreas - Archer

Not entirely convinced by Grealish yet.

For what it’s worth, I’ve got basically the same structure, but Meslier and Rashford instead of Mendy and Martinelli.

Nice, I may go Rashford over Grealish. We'll wait for community shield.

Down to my last remaining changes, bar any preseason upsets - feedback appreciated!

    A. Dalot, Neto, Salah
    B. Robertson, Maddison, Luis Diaz

FWIW, my team also has Kane and Haaland as premium options. Thanks!

I've been on B forever, but moved to A today - really not convinced by a wolves attacker or utd defender tho. Better options out there

At those price points (4.5m & 5.5m), there aren't many - at least not many I would imagine will have a great difference in points between them.

Bailey and Jonny come to mind, possibly an Arsenal defender but its not so much about about those two - I would rephrase it as:

        A. 4.5m DEF, 5.5m MID, Salah
        B. Robertson, Maddison, Luis Diaz

Not had Salah in a single draft yet until today. Been opting for Diaz & KDB instead, but reading up on stats I'm worried that Diaz just doesn't have comparable output and that Grealish/Mahrez & Salah is the better (and safer) option. So how does this look? Maybe 2 x 4.5 instead of Cash & 4.0?

    Ramsdale 4.0
    TAA / Cancelo / Trippier / Cash / 4.0
    Salah / Maddison / Grealish / Martinelli / 4.5
    Kane / Jesus / 4.5

    Thanks

Really nice team, another one with very similar structure to mine, which makes me very happy!

British Gas have just sent me a projected gas & electricity bill for the next 12 months of £3,400. I imagine that'll be a lot higher than my FPL points total will be in May.

To be fair, you’d have to look at your gas bill over the next 9 months for an equal comparison.

      1. MJF

True. My xGASBILL would still win out.

£500 for the month of January alone is currently projected.

British Gas reported profit records today though, so that’s nice.

Okay, here is the draft, really heavy at the back, I know!

    Sanchez Gazza
    Taa Cancelo Robertson Zinc Tripper
    Salah Bailey Neto Dasilva Andreas
    Kane Haaland Greenwood

Back to the drawing board or getting there?

Wow, that’s really heavy at the back. Your midfield is horrendous to look at, but if you’re happy taking that risk then go for it.

Current side, main issue is it might be difficult to jump on an 8 mil mid.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    Trent Robbo Trippier Cancelo (Neco)
    Salah Martinelli Rashford Grealish (Andreas)
    Jesus Kane (Archer)

Basically what you’d need to do to get there is downgrade Robertson and upgrade Martinelli/Rashford/Grealish.

Yeah, I always like Robertson as an option but he feels like a downgrade waiting to happen.

Not a bad option to have though.
