FPL new signings: Who is West Ham forward Gianluca Scamacca?

West Ham United followed up their summer signings of centre-back Nayef Aguerd (£5.0m), midfielder Flynn Downes (£4.5m) and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) by splashing out on Italy forward Gianluca Scamacca (£7.0m).

The 23-year-old arrives from Sassuolo for a fee of around £30.5m and will hope to succeed where other Hammers forwards have not in recent years.

None have arrived to ease the burden on Michail Antonio (£7.5m) since 2019, such were the disappointments of Sebastien Haller, Javier Hernandez and Simone Zaza.

So, where does the Italy international fit in at David Moyes’ side and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions below.

THE HISTORY

Born in Rome, Scamacca totalled six years in the academies of Lazio and Roma before making a surprise move to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven at the age of 16.

With Holland being a proven breeding ground for many years, the plan was for the youngster to break into the PSV line-up and use it as a stepping stone for a bigger move.

2017/18Cremonese (loan)Serie B1410

He was quickly back in Italy though, signing for Sassuolo in January 2017, a side who themselves have mastered the transfer market over recent years and provided ready-made talent for Serie A’s biggest outfits.

Loan spells at Cremonese, PEC Zwolle and Ascoli led to his first full top-flight campaign at Genoa in 2020/21.

Netting in the derby against Sampdoria certainly didn’t hurt his popularity, going on to score seven more times before being deemed ready for a run as Sassuolo’s focal point.

It was a wise decision, with Scamacca scoring 16 times and doing enough to earn his first seven caps for Italy.

PLAYING STYLE

At a height of 6ft 5in, FPL managers are right in assuming that Scamacca is good in the air. WhoScored directly refers to aerial duels as one of his best attributes, with regular comparisons back home to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Yet last season’s 16 league goals showcased many types of finishes, including tap-ins, long-range strikes, direct free-kicks, headers and one penalty.

Right-footed, his expected goals (xG) total of just 10.8 can either be interpreted as a campaign of overachievement or prolific finishing. With this being the first season in which he has ever exceeded 10 goals in a single campaign, there may be a degree of scepticism.

Amongst the ‘big five’ leagues, only four players scored at least 15 goals whilst also missing no more than five big chances – Erling Haaland (£11.6m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Domenico Berardi and Scamacca.

WHERE SCAMACCA FITS IN AT WEST HAM

FPL managers will certainly be interested in seeing if Scamacca links up well with the crosses of Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m). The left-back already has the giant Tomas Soucek (£5.5m) to aim set-pieces at but, using stats from our Members Area, we see he is one the most regular crossers amongst all defenders.

Two seasons ago, Cresswell assisted 11 times and perhaps the addition of Scamacca will benefit the prospects of both.

Over a fifth of Scamacca’s efforts were headers last season, including three of his 16 goals.

Above: Total crosses made by defenders in both 2020/21 (left) and 2021/22 (right)

Scamacca was limited to a cameo appearance in Gameweek 1, with Moyes stating he is “a little bit behind” due to the transfer’s interference with pre-season. He still found time to force a good save from Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson (£5.5m), although the header would’ve been ruled out for offside.

However, it seems that Scamacca will initially be sharing minutes with Antonio – which immediately dents the FPL prospects for both.

“I see his link-up play and his build-up play are very impressive. He’s 23 at the moment and that’s young for someone to come into the Premier League, so I’m looking and will have to give him time. We’re not going to push him on too hard, too quick, because we want to bring him on and we want to get him right and then bring him in when we feel he will be ready to show his qualities.” – David Moyes

IS SCAMACCA WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

It’s very much a wait-and-see situation with the forward on the back of Moyes’s comments.

Our Season Ticker does say that West Ham have the second-best fixture run between Gameweeks 2 and 11.

But although they coped well with last season’s congested schedule, it’s worth mentioning that qualifying for the Europa Conference League group stage would bring another long period of midweek matches.

From Gameweek 2 until players are released for the World Cup in November, each midweek will have either a league, Europa Conference League or EFL Cup match. There is also an international break to factor in September.

Should Scamacca become the Hammers’ clear first-choice forward and hit some great form, his £7.0m price sits well amongst the likes of Ivan Toney (£7.0m), Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) and Callum Wilson (£7.0m).

      Salah or Andreas?

How is this even a comparison. The game is about getting the best players within a certain budget so obviously if you get foden you'll upgrade somewhere else and you have to take that into account.

Yeah, but of a daft question, but here's my serious analysis: I think Haaland will hoover up the bulk of City's attacking returns. Last season they were shared around the midfield, but not this time. This will be to the detriment of the midfielders. The biggest supplier of assists will be KDB, so that makes him the most viable of the mids, but his price is a deterrent. So my strategy is to avoid all midfielders and have Haaland, a defender and the goalkeeper. No others will match their values.
While I'm making that point, another move I've made is as a lone voice in the wilderness, but I still stand by it - my defender of choice is Dias, not Cancelo. I don't think this year Cancelo will be worth the extra 1m, and what I saw on Sunday justifies my view. He is a superb asset for City, but he too will suffer FPL-wise due to Pep's tactics to feed Haaland. What I saw was Walker and Cancelo inverted in midfield, forming a solid wall with Rodri, and pushing Gundogan further up the park. He will get the assists that last year Cancelo would get a share of. So Cancelo is good for clean sheets, same as Dias. What I had overlooked is how involved in the 10,000 passes City put together, so he'll get baps, maybe an average of 1 more than Dias per game. But I'm happy to take 1 point less and reinvest 1m elsewhere for greater effect.

I have just wildcarded. Now I have

    Sanchez
    Robbo, Salbia, James, Walker
    Salah , Martnelli, Kulusevski
    Jesus Halaand Nunez
Bench of Andreas, Da Silva, Patterson

Now for next week do you think James for one of the bench is worth it? If so who?? Kinda wanna put Patterson in as he is the early kick off and I can actually watch at a sensible time. Any thoughts?

Why bench James when he has Leeds away in gw3? If you're wildcarding and planning on not playing him, then there's no point in getting him

James has a ceiling which is to high for Patterson to reach.

If you are going to bench James, rather do not have him in your team.

Find these replies bizarre. Of course you can bench James v Spurs (likely playing CB anyway) & then play him in the better fixtures to come

If you have a premium defender just play them every week and rely on your fodder in case of injury or rest.

I recall last season Liverpool & City playing out a 0-0 with my benched premium mocking me from my bench.

It's just not work benching a premium defender like James etc. who could get a brace in any game.

      Just a thought ...

I had James last year and will keep him in but the lure of Andreas, Patterson and Da Silva (who I think could be get decent points against Utd)

If James plays CB it is a risk in the big games... Who would play RB if James was not too play?? I reckon he will still play RWB but Andreas looked tricky and should get enough points...then you have a crap Villa against Everton playing 3 at the back, do a clean sheet chance...

How much money do you think it would cost Liverpool to buy Connor Gallagher, Klopp said his motto is "intensity is our identity" a quote he got from Pep and also I think Gallagher might have the highest work rate in the premier league.

      • 5 Years

Chelsea will ask north of 50m if Liverpool want Gallagher. Young, English and they wouldn't want to sell to a rival

I would argue that Liverpool and Man City are in their own league as the top 2 so their direct premier league rivals are Arsenal Tottenham and Manchester United (haha very funny)

I'd disagree with that. Chelsea finished 3rd last year so naturally they'd want to close the gap between them and the teams that finished above them. They won't do that by selling them a player that could improve them (for now at least) thus make the gap bigger. It will be an admission that Chelsea are not playing to try and catch Liverpool or City and accepting that 3rd is the best they can hope for. No big club with any ambition will or should ever admit that.

It's all relative anyway.....there's been no interest or news that Liverpool are in for Gallagher. I think Liverpool will wait until next season before going for Bellingham to strengthen their midfield

For now they pretty much can only finish in the top 4 barring a miracle, they just have to hope that Liverpool and Man City have a downturn after Pep and Klopp leave, that might be their opportunity for winning.

All it takes is a bad season from City/Liverpool and Chelsea are arguably the most likely team to take advantage of that.

It was only just over a season ago they won the Champions League and they are still good enough not to be dismissed as significantly below City and Liverpool's level

Chelsea are kind of in a limbo position - not as good as City/Pool, but still miles better than everyone else. Therefore they are in the best position to not sell to rivals and try to close the gap. Even last year, they played 2 finals vs liverpool and lost both of them on pens lottery, not because they were outplayed, so definitely they shouldn't raise the white flag in competing with those 2 juggernauts for titles because on any given day they can beat them

Liverpool have injuries and Connor Gallagher was one of the best midfielders in the premier league last season, the primary weakness of Liverpool's team in not having a depth of quality in midfield, for that reason he would be a great signing because he fits their playstyle of intensity as Klopp said.

I don't think Gallagher has the ball-playing capabilities to play in that team. He was very effective last year in his box-to-box role for his pressing and shooting around the box, but he doesn't get on the ball anywhere near enough for a team like Liverpool or Chelsea and his passing and pass completion rates are really poor.

Agree. He will be wasted at Chelsea for his main attribute without the ball, harassing players. Plus we have Kante that does that brilliantly. Gallagher will end go out on loan again. Hopefully to Palace again. They sorely missed him last week.

If you're going to wild card (Why??) you shouldn't have two Foxes keepers. You'll be without your WC and should you want two other Foxes (Vardy, Maddison, KDH etc) when their fixtures turn then you'll be facing an extra transfer for another keeper.

I don’t like taking hits, didn’t take many last year and hoping to keep it going this year.
But is this worth the hit?

Iversen and James —> Mendy and Walker

Made a bit of a mistake going without city defenders..

After back and forth with my WC, think I am finally settling with this. When in doubt about having two City defenders which does not include Cancelo, go only Cancelo! Him and Trent are just to good to go without at the end of the day.

    Henderson
    Trent Cancelo Zinchenko Saliba
    Salah Kulu Martinelli
    HAULand Darwin Mitrovic

    Ward Andreas Dasilva Neco

I would have preferred double Arsenal attack but you can't have them all.

        There are no 4.0 mids.

I never said 4.5 mids said were a waste on the bench. I made it explicitly clear STARTING them in your starting eleven including Bailey is a waste.

Think you’ve made the right call there. I started with Cancelo and Walker but I don’t see the latter being a long term pick.
Depending on how Cancelo does the next few gw’s though I might downgrade him to Dias, depending on how Haaland effects his game. Bournemouth game will be a good indicator (as discussed yesterday).

No, I would have wanted Darwin and Haaland so waiting for FT's would have seen me left behind.

Need help guys for GW2, 0.5 ITB:-

    1) Play Mendy
    2) Play Ward
    3) -4 to Ederson

I have triple Arsenal from my FT on Perisic to Zinchenko (Jesus + Martinelli). Bringing in Ederson would give me triple City (Haaland + Walker). I dont reckon Mendy or Ward will get clean sheets this week so probably return 1-2 points, whereas Ederson might get 6+ so it could even out + he has favourable fixtures going forward. Is the risk worth the hit?

Thanks, I guess I can say its no «weak» links in the team.
Salah is the best asset in game, but, my intention playing this way is to not lock away 13m on one player. Very well might not be better, but it will be more engaging. When salah scores a brace+ It will hurt alot but I can live with the 10p matches

I went without salah from the start and have a similar team. Have a 4.5 mid sitting on the bench instead of Martinelli and Jesus instead of Toney. I think given how Darwin looked it’s ok to go with the one premium.

I would however upgrade Toney to Jesus. Not having him is one gamble too many imo

My thoughts with saka over jesus is that there are no sub 8m midfielders I want, I do however want sub 8m strikers (toney, mitro, wilson, bamford).
So I think saka + toney is better then Jesus + 7m mid

Some of you may have been entered into a Broadcaster's League this season and I wondered why. So I asked Fantasy Premier League for clarification. Here it is:

Broadcaster leagues are global leagues which players join automatically depending on their selected country of residence.
As per the terms and conditions when signing up for the game, both UK and non-UK Players Registering for the Game may be automatically entered into a “Broadcaster League” in association with the official Premier League broadcaster in selected territories, if the Broadcaster chooses to administer a Broadcaster League. Any associated prizes for such Broadcaster Leagues are at the sole discretion of the relevant Broadcaster.

Unlike private leagues, it is not possible to join one with a code. Similarly, it is not possible to leave one.

Think you have it right. Wolves looked very disjointed against Leeds so wouldn't fancy playing Ait-Nouri (he's also prone to ycs), Neco is likely to end up with 0pts or worse. Pereira was decent against Liverpool, might be a hope of getting more than 2pts this week

      Imminent. Who’s your pick?

I posted this a couple of dys ago.

    Andreas Pereira is 26 now.

    His career statistics:

    282 matches, 16759 minites, 30 goals.

The only place this player belongs is on your bench. Neco can outscore him.

Of course he could get an attacking return GW2 but this guy is not going to all of a sudden transform into a young Raheem Sterling.

Oh and his assists record is also poor.

Thoughts on rotating Saliba and Sess?

I want to see Sess nailed in the Spurs team. He was attack on steroids vs Soton.

Bit yes, I guess nothing wrong with rotating him and Saliba.

Don't you think this sounds like Sessegnon may actually be first choice? Almost frames Perisic being there just to aid his development.

"I am really pleased for Sess because Sess first of all we are working very well with him, especially on physical aspect because in the past this player had many injuries. After one month, two month and again – injury or muscular problem. He is working well and we are giving him stability in physical aspect. It is very important we sign a player like Ivan Perisic because he can see the way to try to learn something from Ivan.

We are talking about a real important player and top player. Sometimes it is good to bring a player in your team who is a bit over age but at the same time a good player with experience who can improve a young player in your squad."

I am going to give it 2 weeks. By GW4 I will see if I want to bring him in.

Yeah I'm also waiting & watching the situation but starting to think he may be the one (among Spurs WBs)

When he played at ManUtd, Lazio
and Flamengo the vast majority of his games were at CM, he's now playing as CAM / just behind Mitrovic from what we've seen, and for periods on Saturday he had a higher average position on the pitch than Mitrovic. Also on a lot of setpieces now. Nobody expects him to match a forward who has just moved to one of the top clubs in the league for £50m and that has 56 GI in the last 3 seasons.

His past record is of no relevance. He's an ideal bottom-priced player for our bench. In most cases whenever he returns, we won't get any benefit because he'll be on the bench. But it is great to have him there IF he starts exceeding his past record. It's great to be in a position not to make a panic transfer due to a short-term injury because Andreas can fill in.

He is 26 now. His stats are on par with defensive midfielders.

Not really sure of the relevance of a player's age in relation to their position or output. Gundogan is older and after many years of predominantly playing in a defensive role at City moved into being more of a box-to-box 8 for a while and is still capable of doing that.

Got 1m in bank. Worth upgrading my bench fodder to Ake and play against Bourn ?

Would need to bench Tripp, Bailey or James..

Bench Trippier if you do that transfer.

      Nah. Focus on attack!

It depends on who you want to upgrade. Ake is likely only going to be a short term option anyway, as Pep's first choice CB's are likely to be Dias and Laporte.

Does anyone think Cresswell is worth a punt? His fixtures seem pretty good and he may get loads of assists when Scamacca starts playing.

Prefer Trippier in that price bracket. Walker and Digne also on Cresswells level.

Thanks. Already have Trippier. What about Zinchenko?

    Start one of these:

    A) Neto v Fulham

    B) Bailey v Everton

    C) Perierra v Wolves
