GAMEWEEK 2: KEY OBSERVATIONS AND NOTEWORTHY CHANGES

  • Neco Williams (£4.0m) was even more prominent at set plays for Nottingham Forest this week, not only taking a direct free-kick but all of his team’s six corners – from both sides of the pitch – against West Ham.

  • Having taken 13 corners in Gameweek 1, most of them awful, Reece James (£6.0m) found himself uninvolved against Spurs. New signing Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) shared duties with Mason Mount (£8.0m) instead. James was actually barely involved at corner-kicks in 2021/22, taking only three this calendar year (before Gameweek 1), although was and is still prominent at indirect free-kick situations. One convincing argument for why he’s less involved at corners is his pace: Thomas Tuchel has previously highlighted how much James’s speed helps against swift opponents when playing at centre-half, so having him back to stop counter-attacks might be preferable.

  • Substitute Ivan Perisic (£5.4m) replaced Son Heung-min (£12.0m) in the second half of the clash at Stamford Bridge and immediately assumed the South Korean’s role at set plays, providing the corner for Harry Kane‘s (£11.4m) late leveller.

  • Christian Eriksen (£6.5m) has his feet under the door at Manchester United when it comes to free-kicks and corners, with compatriot Mathias Jensen (£5.0m) filling the void he left at Brentford.

  • Having not taken a single corner in Gameweek 1 when four of his teammates did, Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) was back on dead-ball duties against Bournemouth.

  • Two penalties were taken in Gameweek 2, both of them missed by Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.6m) and Declan Rice (£5.0m). While the former remains on spot-kicks for Fulham after his manager’s backing, the identity of West Ham’s next penalty taker remains unknown: David Moyes talked up Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m), who was off the field when Rice missed from 12 yards, but Gianluca Scamacca (£7.0m) did take and score three across the previous two campaigns for Genoa and Sassuolo.

“Mitro knows that the next penalty will be there, the next penalty he will take, and the next penalty he will score. That is part of the game.

“Last week he had one and he scored, this afternoon he could be the moment for us to win the game, but okay, it’s part of our job.

“It’s part of Mitro’s job as well and we have to keep working with him. I will not miss, for sure, because I do not take penalties, but it’s part of the life of a football player. Next time he will score.” – Marco Silva

“Manuel Lanzini took the penalty kicks last year and scored them, it wasn’t Declan. We had Declan in mind today.

“No [Rice isn’t the designated taker this season]. That was one question, it doesn’t mean it will be the same all season. We will see, but Declan was the guy that was on the penalties today.” – David Moyes

is Harrison a decent option as a replacement for Bailey, nailed, set pieces? Or would you go Aaronson for 0.5m less?

Aaronson is a tough one. I currently have had him since the start.

I get the feeling he's either going to be one of those players who is amazing in real life but will never translate it into points, or he's going to find his feet and explode just as soon as people ship him out.

I wish I knew which of those two cases he's going to be.

How do you have money for Trippier to James if it's the same team?

Not sure Ward vs Sanchez but think I'll just play the fixture. West Ham very unlucky not to score against Forest and reckon they'll get something at home.

Yeah James is firmly on my watchlist. I have faith in Mount though. Think he will come good over the good fixture run. Had two decent chances yesterday and on some set pieces.

Only seen highlights on YouTube, but he's a bona fide striker, something West Ham don't have.

Antonio is not the answer and Rice on penalties, when he was already having a bad game being schooled by Awoniyi was just plain stupid stuff from Moyes.

        Fair enough.

Gundo seems to be a great prospect so am looking closely at him and Perisic with a great run of fixtures and should or could start next week. Conte says he can't play 90 but he could play 70+ for example and has the threat.

My structure of my first team was all wrong. I went too heavy at the back and 1 striker. Now i have a decent back line (without going all 7.5) and ive got more explosiveness up front.

Trippier looks solid in this Newcastle team. But their fixtures turn worse. If you could play someone else for those games, then I think it might be worth to keep him. If not, then switch.

Considering a WC for this team to switch to 4-3-3. Sell Mount and Dervisoglu; buy Groß and Jesus. Also, get a better keeper while I am at it. Or, do I save my WC and take a -4 next week?

Probably wouldn't WC yet. Depends how Darwin gets on tonight, you might want him as well.

Thanks. Yes, if Darwin looks all set to start and keep up his xG, then it becomes an easier decision to WC. But then it becomes tough to decide whether to sell Robertson or Salah.

        Tough choices ahead.

But, already used my FT this week. So, it would either be -8 or another week with the same team (no Jesus).

Any preference? Have 2 FTs & 0.5 to spare

    A. Saka>Martinelli & upgrade Rashford to Kulu/£8m + player
    B. Rashford/Bailey>Grob/Rodrigo or similar
    C. Other suggestion

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Williams, Tripper
    Salah, Saka, Rashford
    Haaland, Jesus
    Ward, Bailey, Andreas, Greenwood

Martinelli essential at that price although 6.2 already! This is why keepers from the best teams is a bad idea, you could have just done Rashford to Martinelli.

A looks the best way forward. But then you have to lose some team value for Bailey and sort him next week. Martinelli looks incredible value at that price and those fixtures.

Thanks, that is my thinking presently. No doubt Saka will start outscoring Martinelli. Always have WC if needed especially if Darwin scores well tonight.

    or
    2) WC to be able to fit Haaland for Greenwood but have to lose Kulu, Ramsdale and Perisic and will have to play Neco, Ward and Neto

Thoughts on Cucurella v James folks?

    On WC and bringing in James. Hoping for your insight into whether Cucurella is a trap/rotation risk waiting to happen or an absolute bargain. With no other Chelsea would you go;

    A) James
    B) Cucurella
    C) both

    All comments welcome!

Yea, feels like just going James is the plan. Got Henry & nico and 4-5 defender slots so reasonable cover

Personally, im going with Koulibaly (5.5). Certainly most nailed and shown that he can score in big games. Nice differential as well. I like his vibe. Seems to really be enjoying his time at Chelsea and Tuchel likes him alot.

Bailey has scored one goal for Aston Villa. It was worth the punt to start with but I'd be cutting my losses if I owned him now. Will be in and out the team and best and has been wildly inconsistent (and injury prone) since we signed him.

I see it as a waste of a transfer. One player you'll keep on your bench for another.
Unless your plan is to start DaSilva, which would be an even worse decision.

The issue is that VAR can only intervene in that scenario if they think it's a red. They didn't so couldn't do anything.

I think it is clearly a red though.

If it had been chelsea attacking, they would have probably got a pen though.

Shocking decision by the referee. I won't defend it, but I can try to understand it. It was an off-the-ball incident while the players were waiting for a free kick (or corner). The referee decided to scold Romeo and retake the kick. Refs do the same if there's a bit of jostling at a corner and someone is thrown to the ground.

    2. Thanos
      • 4 Years
      3 years, 11 months ago

That was a really poor call by ref and VAR both.

What's the point of video replays if you can't get such things correct.

      1. No Professionals
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 11 months ago

VAR weren't allowed to give a free kick. They could only send him off, which they probably should have.

No and it's unreal that they got away with it. Chelsea deserved to win and with half-competent refs they actually would. Romero should be banned but I'm 99% sure he won't be. 2 points were stolen yesterday.
