The inevitable has happened: Leon Bailey (£4.9m) dropped in price in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

After his benching in Gameweek 2, some of the Aston Villa winger’s owners in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have seen enough.

The Jamaica international has been transferred out by over 330,000 FPL managers at the time of writing, making him the fifth most-sold player of the week.

The questions over what to do with this troublesome budget midfield slot have been dominating our comments section over the last few days, so we’ll run through the options open to FPL managers and who the best players are to replace him.

*NOTE: This article was originally written before Bailey’s price drop but has been amended since then.

LEON BAILEY: KEEP?

Aston Villa v Everton team news: Bailey benched, Watkins recalled

One option, of course, is to sit tight.

FPL managers may have other fires to fight for Gameweek 3 and Bailey is perhaps at a price where you can let him rot on your bench, at least while we get a bigger picture of Steven Gerrard’s team selection.

If you’ve already got bench fodder options Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Neco Williams (£4.0m) in your squad, for example, at least one of these budget assets is playable over Bailey, in okay-ish fixtures, in five of the six remaining Gameweeks before the September international break:

There’s even the small possibility that Gerrard could reinstate Bailey for the trip to Crystal Palace, too. The Villa manager explained after Saturday’s win over Everton that the decision to go with two strikers and no wingers was partly made to put more pressure on a three-man backline, and the Villans aren’t likely to face many of those types of defences in the next three Gameweeks. Palace, funnily enough, did use such a system at Anfield on Monday but have typically lined up in a 4-3-3.

“We knew we were going to play against three central defenders today, we wanted to be aggressive and brave.

We felt last week that Danny was a little bit isolated at times and when we putting crosses and quality into the box, he was getting suffocated and outnumbered. Having another body in there gave the back three something to think about.” – Steven Gerrard on Saturday

It was only last Friday that Gerrard was praising Bailey after a successful pre-season, so there hasn’t been a fallout. Minutes look likely of some variety even if starts aren’t guaranteed.

The downside to the ‘wait and see’ approach is the value loss on Bailey, whose haemorrhage of owners may even come at the cost of a second price drop before Saturday’s deadline.

He also goes from being part of a first XI to potential bench fodder, although the fixtures are about to stiffen anyway.

LEON BAILEY: DOWNGRADE TO DASILVA/£4.5M MIDFIELDER?

In our on-site poll of Bailey owners, just under 40% have so far said that they would be jettisoning Bailey for a £4.5m midfielder or Josh Dasilva (£4.6m).

This strategy not only gets a player falling in price off the books but frees up as much as half a million (£4.4m midfielders can now be found) to be spent elsewhere, perhaps to upgrade a goalkeeper or defender.

The issue is that Dasilva and Bailey have already risen and fallen in price this Gameweek, meaning that you’ll only get a maximum of £0.3m from this move if you’ve got your sights set on the Brentford midfielder – and you’ll not be able to do much with those funds in isolation.

There’s precious little else at this price rung bar Dasilva: only nine £4.5m midfielders have featured in both of their sides’ matches so far this season, just four of whom have started both fixtures:

Of these, Romeo Lavia (£4.5m) and Harrison Reed (£4.5m) are defensive midfielders with the best chances of sustained game-time, while Ben Pearson (£4.5m) is another spoiler who is far from guaranteed starts in the medium term.

Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) is the standout option if you don’t already own him, with an advanced number 10 role and set-piece responsibilities in his favour. Boss Marco Silva thinks the injury he picked up in Gameweek 2 isn’t serious, so he could be back for this weekend.

Mohamed Elneny is the only £4.4m-rated midfielder in FPL at present but Andre Gomes (£4.5m) could also drop to this mark before Saturday.

As for Dasilva, be warned that he has scored twice this season from an expected goals (xG) tally of just 0.07.

While he’s very likely done enough to retain a start in Gameweek 3, it’s too early to say whether he is a ‘nailed’ starter in the medium term, with competition healthy in the engine room – especially after Mikkel Damsgaard‘s (£5.5m) arrival.

His minutes are also being managed after a long lay-off.

He does have some previous for goalscoring, netting on 10 occasions in the 2019/20 Championship season, and his bargain price is less to do about a lack of goal threat as it is his injury-affected 2021/22 campaign in which he barely featured.

LEON BAILEY: SELL FOR ANOTHER £5.0m+ MIDFIELDER?

Around one in three of Bailey’s owners in our polls are thinking of making the swap to another £5.0m midfielder of upgrading him to a more expensive alternative.

Both approaches now require money in the bank and/or a downgrade elsewhere, which may be easier said than done.

And the £6.0m-and-under bracket isn’t exactly stocked with attractive alternatives, especially towards the lower end of this budget price rung.

So who are the leading candidates? Let’s take a look at the runners and riders…

LEON BAILEY: THE BEST FPL REPLACEMENTS?

£5.0m OPTIONS

GRANIT XHAKA

Now, don’t laugh…

Forget what you know about the Granit Xhaka (£5.0m) of old – apart from his love of a booking or worse.

The arrival of ‘inverted full-back’ Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) has helped Xhaka push forward a bit more a left-sided number eight, something that became apparent in pre-season. It wasn’t too obvious in a tight game against Crystal Palace on the opening day but in matches where the Gunners attack more, as they did against Leicester and surely will against Fulham and Bournemouth, it’s noticeable.

He was deep in the penalty box for not just his goal and assist in Gameweek 2 but also an earlier headed effort that struck the woodwork.

Four penalty box touches, two shots (both ‘big chances’) and two key passes were registered by Xhaka in Gameweek 2.

“I’ve got more freedom to go up and down. I know I can do that. I have a lot of freedom from the coach, from my teammates. At the moment I’m happy with how everything is going” – Granit Xhaka

“Granit is arriving in the box and he should have scored last week and he could have scored two today because he had another header, and that’s what we need.

“He’s there to play the role that we want and Granit has certain characteristics, but we can develop other characteristics because he has the ability to do it, and when Fabio Vieira plays in that position he will have a different role because his qualities are different, and it’s the same with Martin, so the team has to adapt, but the players as well have to play with an eye on the goal and the feeling that they want to score.” – Mikel Arteta on Granit Xhaka

The nagging concern is over rotation, something we don’t want from our budget midfielders. The Gunners were linked with a host of ‘number eights’ over the summer but Arteta’s post-match comments on Saturday seemed to suggest that Fabio Vieira (£6.0m) will provide competition for Xhaka. Given that Vieira has yet to make a single matchday squad because of injury, it seems to be Xhaka’s spot for now.

    Difference between walker and Cucurella

    Walker 6 points
Cucurella 6 points, plus assist plus bonus.

There is one hell of a difference when just going safe for Walker's points.

True but City can concede while Chelsea concede as well while Cucurella decides it his his day getting a goal and an assist.

Walker's points history over the last 3 seasons in FPL is simply nothing to get excited about.

they dont need to be though. city will get about 20 CS, Chelsea about 15. So if you work out the expectation thats 52%*4 +2 for Walker, and 39%*4+2 for Chelsea. or 4.08 vs 3.56. half a point per match. factor in a bit more nailedness (which im not sure is valid given its pep we are talking about), maybe a whole point per match.

thats completely obliterated by the upside that goals, assists and bonus provide. especially in a game where embracing variance has huge rewards in terms of points and team value.

Decided I will go for Bailey -> Saka move. Is it better to do it now before Bailey goes down in price or wait that both loses .1? If I make the move now and Saka goes down after that, it only takes one rise to make that .1 back, right?

its a little more complex than that due to the captaincy.
salah offers a foil to haaland, whilst kdb is very much an all in bet on city vs liverpool.

Agreed that Salah provides an alternate captaincy option -- but, with the upcoming fixtures of City, it is basically Haaland captain every week except may be GW7 against Spurs. But, you also have to consider that there's an 8.0m nailed midfielder at Liverpool while KdB is the only nailed midfielder at City.

(I am using the term "nailed" a bit more loosely but you get the idea)

Hi guys, rather than post a potential WC team, I’m just gonna ask this:

Who here is quite firmly on the Diaz boat instead of Salah?

I’ve never gone without Salah due to the obvious fear factor, and feel like I wanna go KDB over him with Diaz to hopefully offset Salah’s spot.
A WC team for me totally depends on Salah Vs KDB

Just wondered where people stand on this.

    Cheers guys.

I am of the opinion that salah hasnt done much for the entire calender year. Certainly not enough to justify his price. But then there is safety in staying with the herd - which means the advice people will give you on here will err on the side of caution. The players to own at the back end of last season were KdB and Maddison, and that seems to be the case this season. For me, it feels like Haaland is going to have a season like Salahs first with Liverpool, and the KdB double up has the potential to look like Son + Kane from 2 seasons ago. The winner of that season identified that trend and just stayed on it the whole year.

Its a season defining call due to the way captaincy swings the game (and Salah will be captained by most), so it really depends on whether you want a decent rank (then just stay with the herd and ask your differential picks to provide the upside variance) or an amazing/terrible one.

      1. banskt
        • 12 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

I agree completely with this. It depends on your risk appetite. If you want a decent rank, get Salah. If you are not bothered by a terrible rank but with a slight possibility of an amazing rank, go with KdB.

I belong to the second category and do not hesitate to take risky decisions. I started without Jesus -- that didn't work out. I realized my mistake and am reverting that decision with my WC while taking another risk by dropping Salah in favor of KdB. If that doesn't work out until GW8, it will be too late to salvage my season but I am not really worried -- after all, its a game which nobody actually cares about. On the upside, if it works out, I will get an amazing rank.

Really great feedback there, good argument summary. You are right, it comes down to settling for a decent rank or an amazing/horrendous one ha! It feels weird straying from the ‘norm’ if I do leave Salah to KDB, and I thought I would be happy sticking, but there really does come a time when you just want to go another way and try something different, I think this is that kinda season for me, despite a decent start to kick things off.
The trend really does seem to be carrying on with KDB and Maddison from the back end of last season, KDB even looks refreshed and livelier than before I’m honest.

Moyes has surprised me by ditching Benrahma at the back end of last season and for the opening game and I think he doesn't know what he prefers at the moment. That being said, Fornals started both games this season and was the preferred choice last season too when Lanzini returned.

      However, I personally would take Benrahma over both if I had 6M instead of 5.5M and you want to consider a West Ham asset. I do think that once Scamacca is up to pace, it'll be;

      Bowen | Fornals | Benrahma
      -------- Scamacca ---------

With Lanzini, Cornet and Antonio being the super subs from 60 onwards.

This a WC? I like it and certainly G2G, personal preference would be to replace Toney with another mid, but I think that’s just because he’s burnt me lots last season.

Hey guys before the price changes kick in I am trying to figure out what to do. Already used two FT for kulu & jesus (sold Son & 4.5)

I want to get rid of Bailey, Bruno Gui. and Dalot
Wanna get in Rodrigo, Zinchenko. Which ones shall I do for -4 or -8 ? If I WC now, would it make sense? Thanks

A lot of conversation going around tonight which I love to see on here. I got caught with work earlier so I'm free now (albeit I replied to some of the comments).

I pulled the trigger on my wildcard, it's currently stacked with potential risers, and I'm banking on the likes of Robertson & Son to drop in price so PLEASE KEEP SELLING THEM.

    That being said, Son isn't actually a fixed plan for my WC team yet, which is this;

    Ederson, Ward
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Cucurella
Kulusevski, Luis Diaz, Martinelli, Andreas, MID
    Haaland, Jesus, FWD

The two remaining positions have the price range of 11.8M.

    A) Toney & Da Silva (11.6M)
    B) Mitrovic & KDH (11.6M)
    C) Your recommendations?

    Now it is worth noting I can do the following;
Ederson & Ward > Sanchez & Steele (although if I keep Ward I can start him in GW9 & GW13 as Sanchez has nasty fixtures) frees up quite a bit of cash whereby I can ditch Kulu for KDB or Son but that means Elneny (4.4) and a 4.5 FWD. So basically only Andreas for the bench. (Side note: If Son or Robbo drops by 0.1 then Elneny can go up to 4.5 or 4.6)

Please don't try and talk me into Salah. I think he ruins what can be an extremely powerful starting XI. I'm not even set on KDB or Son right now, when I can get Gundo or Kulu.

      • 3 Years

All sounds reasonable enough. Just debated above if people were on the Salah or KDB train, it appears you are firmly going without Salah, which I am trying my best to come around to. I want to wake up! Haha!

I was reading that and thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Some great points put forward that KDB/Haaland could be the Son/Kane of this year. Liverpool look off the boil to me and the only reason I'm keeping them is out of respect of what we know this team could do. If this was Tottenham performing how they have been we'd be screaming for them to be dumped.

Salah doesn't seem to be as threatening as previous seasons and this is backed up by FPL's ICT rating of 17 (out of all midfielders after the first two GWs). Yes he can be explosive and there will be weeks where he might outscore one of my players, but having him breaks such an amazing XI you can make.

I've also had two great seasons top 25K and top 15K over the last two years so I'm happy to play this one a bit differently, especially after the poor start I've had.

Yes, that's creative, not threatening, he's ranked 3 for creativity. I'm not shelling out 13M for my captain to get assists.

Get 1 or 2 4m def bench cows and sort out mud mid and forward structure.

This looks like a team that needs a WC. If Salah goes nuts this week what you going to do to get him in?

      You are literally hamstringing yourself

      1. Zenith UK
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

My forward structure is literally template and I have three midfielders who cover their premium brothers (Salah/Son/Saka).

If Salah goes nuts this week I'll say, it was Man U, there are going to be tougher opponents throughout the season, if he doesn't go nuts it'll be a huge, I told you to stay away, Man U were never going to get humiliated twice like they did and not generate some kind of reaction.

Liverpool are lacking massively in midfield this year, and the lack of creativity is causing Salah to carry some of that burden which is why we saw Robbo/Dias and, until his moronic moment, Darwin get a lot of opportunities/dangerous positions.

Worst case, if I REALLY feel I have to get him in, instead of spending the 11.8M I get a 4.6 Da Silva, a 4.5 Greenwood leaves 2.7M in the bank and it's a simple Dias/Kulu to Salah & a 5.8M (GroB/KDH/Eze) for -4.

You're doubling up on 2 teams that haven't got a single CS yet. This is horrible. I feel like last week telling WCers not to sell Jesus but worse

Doubling on two teams without a CS? Chelsea had a CS GW1, City had a CS GW1 & GW2?

I made mistake with Chelsea but that was Everton who are are junk in attack. Problem with big 5 at the back is if you need to restructure in a hurry it's basically a WC so can't believe you committing to this using a WC. Could be disaster

I agree, but I'm just going all out right now. Awful start, wanna full send it. Let's get those points on the board or I won't (which won't matter after a god awful 3.8M rank start).

That being said, I agree with you re: CS and Everton being trash, but Chelsea's fixtures look glorious to GW19 with the exception of GW6 (West Ham given them a hard time over last couple of seasons / London derby) GW8 and maybe GW13 (if they pull their finger out). However, the defenders I've picked should ALL be getting an attacking return if they're not returning a CS. That's kinda what they're there for really. And if I'm not getting a CS from City, Liverpool, Chelsea, then nobody is giving me a clean sheet, ya know? I see it as a buy-one-get-one-free from the 5-7.5M range, which the midfielders, can't give me.

I started with Trent, Robertson, Cancelo, James. I bought those premium players with the expectation of points at both ends of the pitch -- attack and defense. Unfortunately, Liverpool did not look defensively solid in their last two games. That defensive frailty will probably continue given the unfortunate injuries. Hence, I am selling Robertson for now, with a plan to bring him back when they start to look solid again (which could be as soon as next few games, who knows?)

So, I am switching to Trent, Cancelo, James, Cucurella. Allows a more balanced squad, even with KdB / Son.

      1. Zenith UK
        • 9 Years

I went Chilwell instead of James which is one of the other reasons I felt I had to pull the trigger on the WC this week. I do understand what you mean about Robbo, but I just don't think I benefit much from losing him.

If I do Robbo to Neco (4.0 example).

I can have a midfield three of KDB, Luis Diaz & Martinelli (accounting for Ederson becoming Mendy - which means Chelsea defensive triple up though). Leaves 6.9 for a mid. It does mean no Spurs however.

If I went Son over KDB, I can keep Ederson and the mid price point becomes 6.4

        Bench would then be;
Neco, Andreas, Greenwood each week or I could have a slightly stronger bench in case of an injury/suspension/rotation?
