Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Chelsea, Leicester City and Brighton and Hove Albion, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of five per cent or less at the time of writing.

KAI HAVERTZ

Havertz shines again as Arsenal impress in FPL Double Gameweek 29 opener 6
  • FPL ownership: 3.9%
  • Price: £7.9m
  • GW3-7 fixtures: lee | LEI | sou | WHU | ful

Kai Havertz (£7.9m) should have scored against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 2, as Reece James’ (£6.1m) cross was put past the post by the German.

However, he led the line well, combining effectively with fellow attackers Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Mason Mount (£8.0m), and now faces Leeds United on Sunday.

Beyond that, the Blues’ fixtures look great right up until the international break, particularly from an attacking perspective. Indeed, not one of their next four opponents have kept a clean sheet this season, conceding a whopping 18 goals between them.

Across Chelsea’s opening two matches against Everton and Spurs, Havertz has attempted five shots, all inside the box. Notably, he’s also posted team-leading totals for penalty box touches, shots on target and headed goal attempts.

In Gameweek 2, Havertz was deployed alongside Sterling in a front two and given considerable freedom to roam. It was an interesting system that resembled a 4-2-2-2 in possession and relied upon James and Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) for width, which can only be a good thing for Havertz’s goalscoring prospects moving forwards, given both wing-backs crossing ability.

Havertz is owned by just 3.9% of FPL managers, and whilst difficult to fit in, could be a smart differential to take advantage of Chelsea’s kind run.

JAMIE VARDY

  • FPL ownership: 4.3%
  • Price: £9.5m
  • GW3-7 fixtures: SOU | che | MUN | bha | AVL

Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) is an intriguing differential pick in Gameweek 3, given that opponents Southampton have failed to keep a single away clean sheet in the Premier League since October 2021.

On average, they have conceded 2.6 goals per game during that run, suggesting Vardy can net his first haul of the season on Saturday.

The veteran forward looks to be Leicester City’s first-choice forward again in 2022/23, starting his team’s first two matches and assisting Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s (£5.0m) strike against Brentford.  He is also on penalties and managed 15 Premier League goals last season, highlighting his FPL points potential.

Leicester haven’t got off to a great start, drawing with Brentford and losing at Arsenal, but they have scored four goals, so their attacking output hasn’t necessarily been affected. It’s also worth noting that they ranked fifth for goals scored (62) in 2021/22, with just under 55% of those goals arriving on home turf.

The swift turnaround between fixtures in Gameweeks 5 and 6 are possibly ones to watch for Vardy, given that Brendan Rodgers may manage his minutes, but there’s no Europe this season, which does help.

Vardy is a real livewire in the final third and an explosive differential for this forthcoming round of fixtures.

LEWIS DUNK

Fit-again Dunk a tempting FPL differential with goal threat and clean sheet potential 1
  • FPL ownership: 2.5%
  • Price: £4.5m
  • GW3-7 fixtures: whu | LEE | ful | LEI | bou

Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) is a solid performer for Brighton and Hove Albion, and should now tick along nicely given his fixtures.

The Albion captain played a pivotal role in helping his side keep a clean sheet against Newcastle United in Gameweek 2, and that defensive solidity, combined with the 30-year-old’s threat from set-pieces, is appealing.

Last season, Dunk ranked 17th among all defenders for shots in the box, but in 2020/21 was second, so there does seem to be some potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Despite losing two of last season’s star players, Yves Bissouma (£5.0m) and Cucurella, Graham Potter’s side have started the campaign unbeaten. They have won at Manchester United and then followed that result up with a goalless draw against the Magpies, a game in which they deserved to win.

Now, Brighton don’t face another top-six side until Liverpool and Spurs in October. In fact, their run from Gameweeks 3 to 8 sees them sit top of our Season Ticker, with particularly appealing matchups against Leeds United, Fulham and Bournemouth to come.

At just £4.5m, Dunk is decent value and could be a great enabler, allowing you to push more money further forward.

Amazing that a few weeks ago everyone knew that having 5 high priced defenders was the way to go. Now people somehow have 3 strikers.

Havertz is annoying to own. Mount maybe safer but there are doubts there. James is better than both and I won't double up until I know if Chelsea buy a striker or not.

        33% v 11%.

Pope will get some save points.
NEW (h) is not an easy fixture, 11% seems a bit harsh.

Ward suspect, but good fixture.... hmmmm.....

Currently on Pope, but it'll end up being a last-minute decision.

    1. lugs

Pope will probably get a monster score with save points + possible bonus but it doesn't feel right to start a keeper vs City, so Ward

I was joking. Your previous post is really helpful. Happy Ederson owner here, even as a Newcastle fan.

Bournemouth goalkeeper got 1 point last week, Ward has gotten 1 point in both of his last 2 games. Don't think it will make a big difference. Probably don't captain who you pick though.

            Oh 😆

I went with the Leicester pair which was a downgrade from Ederson so I'm well happy with the improvements that allowed me to make to the rest of the squad.

Not sure I get what you mean when you say "Probably don't captain who you pick though." Are you saying don't captain Jesus???

    Last 2 questions.

    1- start sanchez or ward?
2- who to start between aaronson, Patterson and Andreas? Whose first on bench? I was pretty set on Patterson but with kante out not sure Chelsea keeps the clean sheet.

Possible to still get a good finish with a horrible first two gameweeks? At like 5.8m OR right now...really unlucky start with Ait Nouri, Saliba, Darwin -'s, missing Jesus this week, having Rashford, etc.

Two game weeks is nothing, and the points separating the packs right now are so tight anyway, gaps haven’t properly emerged as yet, loads of time to make up ground, all it takes is two good GW’s and back up there.

had a similar start, it will be difficult to make back ground if you go full template, but i think with the right balance of differentials + template you can make back ground easily at this stage, i currently have Maddison, Mount, Zaha & Toney as differentials they're all good picks with a decent pedigree so all is not lost yet

      Course it is!

I'm at 4.1m and still looking forward to a top 50k finish minimum. I wouldn't worry about OR right now tbh as although you think you're lowly ranked now, the points difference between you and for example 3m is practically nothing...

Some doubts over Mount and set pieces. Do you have James? Is one Chelsea enough coverage?

Diaz. You don't already have 3 Liverpool players? Presume you have Trent and Salah. Most people have them and either Robbo or Diaz.

Saka is the other choice but most have Martinelli and Jesus. Martinelli better value at the moment if you don't have him.

Foden is a good pick but Pep roulette.

I'd go Diaz but wouldn't go minus 4 for it.

You should be thinking that whoever you buy you will keep until maybe a wildcard around week 8. They all have the same price because they are about the same so probably not worth the minus 4 unless you don't think Foden will play or you like the fixtures for the next 6 weeks.

    So, the wildcard was pulled and the only profit I managed to make (immediately) was ditching Robbo and now I can bring him back. I posted a few options yesterday and based on the feedback and price changes, here are the team options I now have;

    XXX, Ward
    Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, James, Cucu
    Diaz, Martinelli, Andreas, XXX, XXX
    Haaland, Jesus, XXX

    A) Ederson | Kulu | w/ 11.9M for one MID & one FWD = 1st Sub Strong, 2nd/3rd subs (Toney or Gundo/Zaha/GroB/Benrahma/JWP w/ 4.5 as the other position)
    A) Ederson | Kulu | 4.5 | 4.5 = All bench < 4.5M bank 2.9M
    C) Sanchez | KDB | 4.5 | 4.5 = All bench < 4.5M

    Those are the three options (KDB could easily be Son too) which means 5-2-3/5-3-2 for the most part, or for option D I can make this highly enjoyable 4-4-2 team;

    Sanchez, Ward
    Cancelo, Robbo, James, Cucu, 4.0
    KDB, Diaz, Kulu, Martinelli, 4.4

I don't understand not having Salah. KDB and Haaland are good picks and could work out though. Just noticed you don't have Trent either.

Because Salah ruins teams and I'm going to be captaining Haaland over Salah.

        I do have Trent.

Sorry I was looking at the 442 team. Don't buy the Salah ruins teams. He is that price for a reason but if you aren't going to captain him it makes sense. Neco at 4.0mil is very cheap. I really rate robbo as a pick but if you do Robbo to Neco I think you can fit Salah in as well as Diaz and Trent.

Yeah he won't be getting captained. The 1M difference between Salah & KDB/Son goes a long way. Turns a Zaha/Grealish/Gundo into a Kulu/Diaz or a Toney into a Jesus, ya know?

Also which build ditch Robbo to 4.0 and get Salah? Because that's only a 3M price change and I don't have a 10M midfielder to rotate out?

            1. Boaz05

I think that Robbo is a bit better than Diaz but Neco is better than 5mil midfielders.

              You can have

              Ederson Ward
              Trent Cancelo James cucu Neco
              Salah Dias Martinelli Andreas 4.5
              Jesus Haaland 4.5mil

              And money in the bank.

That 1mil can't do much when you already have diaz and Jesus. Just makes your bench a bit better.

See that's the thing. With your build I have to play

                Neco/Andreas each week.

                So it's Salah/Neco vs KDB/Robbo? I know which I'm taking

I am very happy rotating Neco, Andreas or another 5.5mil player.

I like the KDB one better than the kulu (rotation with Richarlison and midweek fixtures) and Toney (just don't rate.

Problem is you don't have any rotation with captains so it will be a Man City player every week.

If you think Liverpool will underperform last season and City will overperform it could be okay I guess.

                    See I do, I don't like that.

KDB one being C or D over A or B?

Haaland set and forget, VC on KDB. I think City have already won the league this year, especially with Liverpool's performance. The hardest fixture City have between now and GW is Spurs in GW7 at home, could easily captain Trent/Robbo/Diaz v WOL or Jesus v EVE. Would also bench Ederson & Kulu and bring in Ward (v AVL) & Toney (v sou).

I would love to have KDB in there but feel he’d mess up the balance. That 4-4-2 option you posted is pretty juicy, I would go with that one myself

I'm going Salah. Proven record. United are a mess and when they are three nil up at half time fans will start leaving the stadium. The other three are all good picks as well. Should be a high scoring week.

Salah, guaranteed 90 mins or thereabouts, Haaland likely to be off before or just after 70 mins or so. Jesus and KDB could work but United are dreadful right now, Salah should have more poise with any ex out also, and of course on pens.

Liverpool aren’t to hot either, got a feeling this will go 3-2 and the low ownerships on the team are going to be hauling.

This is true but just feel without Nunez in the picture Salah will have more free reign, especially if Firmino is gonna play a part as well. After weighing things up between him Haaland and Jesus, Salah looks the best bet to me.

I have pretty much the same side as well but only had one transfer. Was thinking of downgrading Neto but couldn't find anyone to buy. I think Bailey is your only "problem" there. Not sure about his minutes. Maybe just downgrade him to a 2 pointer and then decide on what to do with Neto next week unless you find someone you prefer now.

Maybe think of Neco first sub. You can also have Iverson starting. If Ward gets sent off you get one point from Iverson coming on instead of minus points. If he doesn't get sent off you get Wards points automatically off the bench.

yes, Liverpool have issues too, and Utd will have a different mindset and approach in a game they are expected to lose vs the other 2 games they were expected to win, a draw would be considered a win in this game for Utd, so 1-1 imo

Lots of love for perisic on this site. Spurs play twice a week until Christmas or something. Lots of rotation and shared minutes with 5 sub rule and his age. As long as you are aware of that it is fine. Walker could be great value if he plays every game... Seems a bit sideways.

Don’t think it should be a problem, the authorities have had plenty of warning and time to prepare for the game. Unless the United fans have something sneaky up their sleeve and disrupt the match whilst it’s in progress I think it should be fine. Always set you’re second best C as VC regardless

On the other hand, leicester have kept a few cs against saints in the past years.

Does that swing it towards ward over sanchez? Reckon there’ll be goals in the Brighton game
