Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Chelsea, Leicester City and Brighton and Hove Albion, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of five per cent or less at the time of writing.

KAI HAVERTZ

Havertz shines again as Arsenal impress in FPL Double Gameweek 29 opener 6
  • FPL ownership: 3.9%
  • Price: £7.9m
  • GW3-7 fixtures: lee | LEI | sou | WHU | ful

Kai Havertz (£7.9m) should have scored against Tottenham Hotspur in Gameweek 2, as Reece James’ (£6.1m) cross was put past the post by the German.

However, he led the line well, combining effectively with fellow attackers Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Mason Mount (£8.0m), and now faces Leeds United on Sunday.

Beyond that, the Blues’ fixtures look great right up until the international break, particularly from an attacking perspective. Indeed, not one of their next four opponents have kept a clean sheet this season, conceding a whopping 18 goals between them.

Across Chelsea’s opening two matches against Everton and Spurs, Havertz has attempted five shots, all inside the box. Notably, he’s also posted team-leading totals for penalty box touches, shots on target and headed goal attempts.

In Gameweek 2, Havertz was deployed alongside Sterling in a front two and given considerable freedom to roam. It was an interesting system that resembled a 4-2-2-2 in possession and relied upon James and Marc Cucurella (£5.0m) for width, which can only be a good thing for Havertz’s goalscoring prospects moving forwards, given both wing-backs crossing ability.

Havertz is owned by just 3.9% of FPL managers, and whilst difficult to fit in, could be a smart differential to take advantage of Chelsea’s kind run.

JAMIE VARDY

  • FPL ownership: 4.3%
  • Price: £9.5m
  • GW3-7 fixtures: SOU | che | MUN | bha | AVL

Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) is an intriguing differential pick in Gameweek 3, given that opponents Southampton have failed to keep a single away clean sheet in the Premier League since October 2021.

On average, they have conceded 2.6 goals per game during that run, suggesting Vardy can net his first haul of the season on Saturday.

The veteran forward looks to be Leicester City’s first-choice forward again in 2022/23, starting his team’s first two matches and assisting Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s (£5.0m) strike against Brentford.  He is also on penalties and managed 15 Premier League goals last season, highlighting his FPL points potential.

Leicester haven’t got off to a great start, drawing with Brentford and losing at Arsenal, but they have scored four goals, so their attacking output hasn’t necessarily been affected. It’s also worth noting that they ranked fifth for goals scored (62) in 2021/22, with just under 55% of those goals arriving on home turf.

The swift turnaround between fixtures in Gameweeks 5 and 6 are possibly ones to watch for Vardy, given that Brendan Rodgers may manage his minutes, but there’s no Europe this season, which does help.

Vardy is a real livewire in the final third and an explosive differential for this forthcoming round of fixtures.

LEWIS DUNK

Fit-again Dunk a tempting FPL differential with goal threat and clean sheet potential 1
  • FPL ownership: 2.5%
  • Price: £4.5m
  • GW3-7 fixtures: whu | LEE | ful | LEI | bou

Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) is a solid performer for Brighton and Hove Albion, and should now tick along nicely given his fixtures.

The Albion captain played a pivotal role in helping his side keep a clean sheet against Newcastle United in Gameweek 2, and that defensive solidity, combined with the 30-year-old’s threat from set-pieces, is appealing.

Last season, Dunk ranked 17th among all defenders for shots in the box, but in 2020/21 was second, so there does seem to be some potential for points at both ends of the pitch.

Despite losing two of last season’s star players, Yves Bissouma (£5.0m) and Cucurella, Graham Potter’s side have started the campaign unbeaten. They have won at Manchester United and then followed that result up with a goalless draw against the Magpies, a game in which they deserved to win.

Now, Brighton don’t face another top-six side until Liverpool and Spurs in October. In fact, their run from Gameweeks 3 to 8 sees them sit top of our Season Ticker, with particularly appealing matchups against Leeds United, Fulham and Bournemouth to come.

At just £4.5m, Dunk is decent value and could be a great enabler, allowing you to push more money further forward.

Looks to me like the kind of squad that you might start the season with, and can WC out if its inflexibility becomes too much of a burden. With 15 weeks and no way out, it might become problematic later.

I'm going to go straight Haaland, because I don't have Kane or Son in my WC team, but as yours is a free hit I'd need to know other variables. If Haaland do you have Kulu. If Kane/Son do you have KDB or someone else, etc etc

    B) Sanchez, Trent, KDB, Andreas, 4.5, 4.5 = (5-3-2 w/ 0 ITB)

The price falls were just too good for my WC:

    Sanchez
    Robertson, Cancelo, James, Zinchenko
    KDB, Mount, Martinelli
    Haaland (c), Jesus, Toney

    (Ward, Groß, Andreas, Neco)
    0m in the bank

Do you think I should downgrade Groß and keep money in the bank?

I like the team as a whole, love the no Salah pick. Good to see more people going for this. Re: GroB, I'm having similar headaches so honestly couldn't answer. Having the extra cash could be beneficial, especially if you changed your mind about Salah, would allow a straight KDB --> Salah with no worries of taking a hit

My only issue is, I just don't like Mount, I don't know what it is, I just don't. Think I'd rather Cucu & Maddi than Zinchenko & Mount personally.

Oh my God, just realised no Diaz. Re: what I said about midfield then Zinchenko & Mount ---> Cucu & Diaz?

Thanks for your reply. I don't think I will move to Salah in the next 4 weeks unless KDB goes back to his deeper role or gets injured / red-carded. Diaz is a good pick at 8.0m but until Darwin is back, which means only 3 weeks.

Zinchenko and Cucurella are both rotation risks. But then Cucurella means double Chelsea, which may again become a problem. If I want to get Diaz, I will have to get Gabriel/Trippier instead of Zinchenko. That is, Zinchenko & Mount --> Trippier & Diaz.

Another option is Sterling for the Chelsea attack. Sanchez, Zinchenko & Mount --> Iversen, Saliba & Sterling.

I have no plans to go to Salah so I get what you mean, I just figured if you are benching GroB every week, would you not rather have that 1M banked in the case of injury (it is KDB) or red card?

Ahh I wasn't sure if you had profited off of Zinchenko to cover the Mount loss but if you dropped GroB you could do that move right? I understand Cucu rotation risk, I think he's fine, I think it's LCB or LWB as opposed to the bench personally.

You think Darwin reduces Diaz output? Hmm, I thought Darwin more impacted Salah to be honest, fair points though

From the two Liverpool games I have seen, Darwin affects everyone. So, that is one move I am looking at -- Buying Darwin when he becomes available. Then my 4th mid / 5th def (not sure which way to go yet) will be rotating with Gross. That's a pretty long term plan, lol. 🙂

Also, I think Cucurella gets benched in a back 4 for Chelsea. And midweek games starting soon. But, I understand the appeal of Cucurella.

That is true. Currently, he is basically a cash cow. Once I know that he is on penalties, I will eventually move to him as the third midfielder with Kane / Darwin as third striker.

Who would you bench for Gross? I've gone with saliba and zaha just so I can rotate Gross in for them here and there. In your setup Gross is just great fodder

      1. banskt
        • 12 Years

Zaha is a great pick. I am also thinking of Saliba as another value enabler for my team. Tremendous value, isn't he at 4.5m? Considering just getting him ahead of Zinchenko and keep the money in the bank. Or, move up Mount to Sterling.

        1. Valar(Keith)
          • 16 Years

Zaha offers comfort for me. Will bench him for Gross gw4 and just play him every week and suck up any blanks. He will get in the range of 15 goals and a couple assists/cs which would give up points every 1 out of 2 games on average in theory

Last question from me folks for WC

    A) Saliba + Diaz

    B) Rodrigo + Toney

Trying to weigh up if Diaz is worth it over Toney, and if an 8.0 mid is more crucial. If so, Neco could become Saliba.

Team right now is set up as:

    Ederson
    Cucurella - TAA - Cancelo - James
    Martinelli - Salah - Rodrigo
    Haaland - Jesus

If he's injured, he's not playing (imo). If someone has a knock why risk them at 60? He's not a super star who you need after they've had a knock, say Salah, KDB etc returning from injury, he's Andreas, lol (all due respect to him). So he either starts or he doesn't feature.

Just curious probably doesn't make much of a difference, but I don't want the next Elneny. Would rather the next Dasilva (and not for the points I mean).

What 4.5 fodder are you picking up after Andreas? MID & FWD needed please?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

I've just watched some of these YouTube videos that boast superior algorithms (like FFHub). They put Elneny in their teams of the week. Just shows you can't trust what they like to think are 'scientific' data sets.

Your bench fodder needs to be from teams that you will never want 3 players from - not like Arsenal but very like Fulham and Bournemouth, Leeds, Villa, Forest and Palace.

      1. Zenith UK
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, I just don't wanna grab another fodder player who will drop. Surely as a community we can manipulate these low-cost players to rise a bit? 😀 Kidding

Agreed with the big team slots being wasted. I'm just thinking do I want Andreas and Reed for example. The 4.5 FWD slot do I go Greenwood (who's proven to get occasional minutes at Leeds) or Archer (who everyone else has and hopefully his price holds for longer because he's owned by 600K managers).
