Suspensions

FPL suspensions: Jesus and Gordon one booking away from a ban

Gabriel Jesus (£8.1m) and Anthony Gordon (£5.6m) are among the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who are a caution away from a one-match ban, while Joao Palhinha (£5.0m) became the first Fantasy asset to reach five yellow cards for the season in Gameweek 8.

Our regular round-up of the disciplinary situation in the English top flight has more.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

The table above is taken from the Football Association website and details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark, an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

Following the wave of postponements over the last week or so, that is no longer Gameweek 19.

Team19th fixture falls in…
ArsenalGameweek 21
Aston VillaGameweek 20
BournemouthGameweek 20
BrentfordGameweek 20
BrightonGameweek 21
ChelseaGameweek 21
Crystal PalaceGameweek 21
EvertonGameweek 20
FulhamGameweek 20

Man UtdGameweek 21
NewcastleGameweek 20
Nottm ForestGameweek 20
SouthamptonGameweek 20
SpursGameweek 20
West HamGameweek 20
WolvesGameweek 20

The above will change if there are any rearrangements of the postponed fixtures before that but there are few available windows.

A reminder: punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

CURRENTLY BANNED

FPL suspensions: Jesus and Gordon one booking away from a ban 1

Palhinha was booked for an excessive goal celebration after scoring in Fulham’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, collecting his fifth caution of the season in the process.

He’ll now be banned for the Cottagers’ Gameweek 9 clash with Newcastle United.

Nathan Collins (£4.5m) is also newly suspended, albeit not for yellow card accumulation: he was dismissed for serious foul play in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat to Manchester City so will now be unavailable until Gameweek 12.

ON FOUR/THREE YELLOW CARDS

Jesus and Gordon both picked up their fourth bookings of the season in Gameweek 8 and will have to last until mid-January without another caution if they are to avoid a one-match ban.

The pair are actually joint-fourth in the league for most fouls conceded (14) this season, so it’s no mystery as to why they’re on the above list.

Kenny Tete (£4.5m) and Ruben Neves (£5.5m) also collected their fourth yellow cards of 2022/23 in the Gameweek just gone to join Scott McTominay (£4.9m) and Adam Smith (£4.4m) on the precipice.

Reece James (£6.0m) is among the big names further back. There’s no need for any immediate concern of yet, of course, but he’ll have to avoid two bookings in Chelsea’s next 13 league fixtures to swerve a one-match ban.

The defender’s three bookings have actually come from just four fouls conceded.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

In the UK can you bet on stuff like - Jesus to get a yellow card in the last 5 minutes of regular time?

In a related note, are Premier League players allowed to bet on games so long as they don't bet against their team winning?

You can but only once it gets to 5 minutes from time. For the latter there are very, very strict rules regarding anyone involved in professional football regarding betting, it isn't allowed under any circumstances and the punishment is severe.

Thoughts on correcting my wildcard a bit?

    Bailey>Zaha, Perisic>Mings for a -4.

Leaves me with just Emerson the only concern. Rest of the team is great.

Thought the idea was to do the punt before the WC? Sterling is maybe a differential to usual RMWCTs I've seen. Go with your gut, I guess. As long as it's easily fixable, if it doesn't work out.

He is but I hate bench points

The alternative is to have strong 5 in midfield such as

Salah Diaz Maddison Zaha Bowen Gordon Martinelli Son

        I feel stuck with him

On the other hand I might keep him and play him in the blank while having third forward such as Toney or Solanke

Have to do the decision now since Zaha is rising tonight

  9. Atimis

Thoughts on Solanke over Toney on a WC?

Ofc it would be a risky punt but nice fixtures and these funds would give much flexibility to navigate the blank.

            1) Allows more money on the pitch.
            2) Ownership. I think Martinelli will fall in price as many will sell while Saliba will not (easier to bench). That means, if I sell Martinelli at 6.3, I may get him back at 6.4/6.5.

I can't seriously see them improving. Except 18/19 and 19/20 they never played well in consecutive seasons (at least in my lifetime). It will take time to recover from losing Mane and purchasing Darwin. I expect to see them back in form later half of the season or next season.

I would save till GW13. You can sell all your City, Arsenal and field a strong GW12 team. Others will have their money on the bench. Bring all 6 of them back on GW13. Others will have 3.

        Foden?

Ideally want to have Maddison and Zaha by next week. Sacrificing Sterling allows that. Foden would require another transfer.

I saw United v Leeds and Chelsea v Liverpool come up as TBC earlier today in FPL for GW9, I kid you not. I nearly took a -12 to get two Liverpool and Chelsea in. I decided not to because of possible international injuries. However, the fixtures were gone soon after.

    Did anyone else see this?

Was thinking Zich, Royal, Kulu & Kane to James, Chilwell, Diaz & Darwin. Mad, I know, but need differentials

It's strange how players like Jesus and Salah don't drop in price while their ownership keeps tumbling. Example: Salah goes from 50% to 35% ownership and only a single price drop till date. Was his price supported artificially? We will never know.

FPL should release the price change algorithm so that we can plan accordingly. Hate the suspense and surprise of price changes.

Yes, but price should change based on ownership. Of course, ownership changes due to WC should only be confirmed after the WC is locked in.

But 15% ownership change and a single price drop?

Lot of wildcards being used in recent weeks and this week so it's not affecting price changes. I'm sure Jesus will drop anyway again but not a big loss

WC don’t count towards price changes

Higher owned players fall less since higher number of players need to sell them

Also higher number of active managers, that number changes all the time

With time it is more difficult for them to drop in price after the “casuals” have left the game

            Why not?

I understand why it shouldn't change while the WC is active. But once the WC is locked in the exclusion of a player must be taken into account for price changes. Don't you think?

      Nobody knows their algorithm.

I think it should not affect price changes while active.

Once the WC is locked in, I assume the ownership change should affect price change.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

Not sure how that would work. At the deadline, players shooting up or down based on last week's WC transfers?

        1. banskt
          • 10 Years
          1 year, 7 months ago

Exactly. That's how it happens I think.

However, they should even allow double or triple rises / falls to account for the total ownership change during the week. That seems more logical in my opinion.

Another option is to change prices due to wildcards at the GW deadline (when the game updates).

Otherwise, a player can go from 100% to 0% without a single price change if everyone sells that player on WC. That is absurd and a major flaw if true.

However, I think the algorithm must be taking this into account: the ownership changes due to WC. They can't be that stupid to ignore WCs completely.

            • 8 Years

What are you talking about? No player price changes happen at the deadline. You're thinking about price prediction sites, which are independent and only predictions.

I have owned Zaha so many times over the years 🙂

I just feel we have been here so many times with these types of players, catch them in their purple patch and you get a good little earner from them but mostly they will frustrate you.

Just "thinking" is not enough in most cases. The opponents also need the quality to "shut them down and keep them out".
