Suspensions

Which FPL players are suspended or nearing a ban?

Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Anthony Gordon (£5.6m) avoided picking up their fifth yellow cards of the season in Gameweek 9 but they and a few others will be walking the suspension tightrope for a good while yet.

In this weekly article, we look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who are a caution or two away from a one-match ban and which are assets are already suspended.

We’ll update this piece after Leicester City v Nottingham Forest on Monday evening.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

The table above is taken from the Football Association website and details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark, an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

Following the wave of postponements over the last month, that is no longer Gameweek 19.

Team19th fixture falls in…
ArsenalGameweek 21
Aston VillaGameweek 20
BournemouthGameweek 20
BrentfordGameweek 20
BrightonGameweek 21
ChelseaGameweek 21
Crystal PalaceGameweek 21
EvertonGameweek 20
FulhamGameweek 20
LeedsGameweek 21
LeicesterGameweek 20
LiverpoolGameweek 21
Man CityGameweek 21
Man UtdGameweek 21
NewcastleGameweek 20
Nottm ForestGameweek 20
SouthamptonGameweek 20
SpursGameweek 20
West HamGameweek 20
WolvesGameweek 20

The above will change if there are any rearrangements of the postponed fixtures before that but there are few available windows.

A reminder: punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

CURRENTLY BANNED

FPL suspensions: Jesus and Gordon one booking away from a ban 1

Ruben Neves (£5.5m) will miss Gameweek 10 after he picked up his fifth caution of the season in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat to West Ham United on Saturday.

Joao Palhinha (£5.0m) returns this weekend after serving a one-match ban for booking accumulation in Gameweek 9.

Away from all things yellow cards, there are four players serving bans after being sent off.

Emerson Royal (£5.1m) and Nathaniel Chalobah (£4.4m) will not return until Gameweek 13 after being dismissed for serious foul play on Saturday.

Luis Sinisterra (£6.5m) will only be banned for one league fixture, however, as he was sent off for two bookable offences against Aston Villa.

Neves’ team-mate Nathan Collins (£4.5m) serves the second match of a three-game suspension in Gameweek 10.

ON FOUR/THREE YELLOW CARDS

One down, 11 to go: Jesus and Gordon managed to stay out of the referee’s notebook at the weekend but will have to last until mid-January without another caution if they are to avoid a one-match ban.

Arsenal’s Brazilian striker has committed more fouls (17) than any other Premier League player this season.

Aaron Hickey (£5.0m) and the 7.8%-owned Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) also collected their fourth yellow cards of 2022/23 in the Gameweek just gone to join Jesus and co on the precipice.

Reece James (£6.0m), Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) and William Saliba (£4.9m) are among the big names further back. There’s no need for any immediate concern of yet, of course, but they’ll have to avoid two bookings between now and early 2023 to swerve a one-match ban.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

I think I'm going totally without premiums in 12. Could punt on anyone but I think I might favour Trossard over Son now. C: Trossard/Maddison/Trippier/Zaha

Of course not. Kane, Son, Darwin, Diaz, Trippier, Trossard, Maddison, Zaha, Aubameyang, James, Chilwell, Sterling, Mitrovic, Bamford, etc. Too early to tell.

If you want Salah after GW12 anyway, you may as well bring him in for GW12. But no point bringing him in for GW12 for the sake of captaining him, then suffering a 'sub-optimal' team afterward for the privilege, and/or spending 1-2 FTs or hits along the way.

No surprise. The problem is the outcomes favour people who follow the machines and until there is significant changes to the game this will keep happening. You can only rank highly FPL in 2022 if you take all passion and individual judgement out of football, which for me is not the point of the experience.

Is that really the case though? Admittedly, I haven't tracked the 'model' picks too thoroughly. But I don't really think much of RMT as a team/captaincy selector as it seems pretty slow to adjust to new trends/form. And this Trent, Salah, Solanke WC setup isn't exactly looking too hot right now

Playing with some options going forward and see two ways:

    1) bench Cancelo and KDB to Salah GW12, Maddison to Foden GW13

    2) bench KDB and sell Cancelo, means no Pool, Maddison to Foden GW13

Thoughts? Kinda feel like that option with Salah still looks better on paper

I can also just sit with Cancelo KDB Haaland but ofc won't be able to have Salah Foden at the same time so some decisions have to be made

I will go Diaz to Foden if you like, but dont expect a lot from Foden (hatricks etc) though he is better of the 2 imo.

Two pressing problems, Liverpool have to crazy fixtures and I can't see them keeping clean sheets, so do I take Trent out? Or with mitrovic's injury do I take him out?

I'd wait for injury news on Mitrovic soon - plus there are European matches this midweek - plenty of opportunity for more players to get injured!

Foden. As much as Bowen is Hammers talisman, they are more defensive than offensive.

Yeah and even then we have CL and EL games in the next few days to throw more spanners into the mix. Silva said he was due a scan so hopefully we hear something soon, I do fear even if he's declared fit that it may hinder him or flare up again since it's been going on for around 2 weeks now

Can I please get your thoughts on this team? WC used, 0 FTs and 0.9M ITB.

    Pope
    Cancelo James Trippier Neco
    KDB Zaha Maddison Martinelli
    Haaland Solanke

    Iversen Andreas Emerson Mitrovic*

Will obviously wait for Mitro news, but assuming he is out for next GW, would you:

    A) Play Neco (no hit)
    B) Mitrovic > Toney (-4 pts)

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 6 months ago

I wouldn't take the hit, tbh I was never too keen on Toney even after he was being brought in in hordes after his hattrick a few weeks ago. He's a very good player but I had him for a long run at the end of last season and his returns were very sporadic and he wasn't often the type to pick up returns in the games you'd expect. For example in his last 9 last season he picked up 1g 3a, and blanked against leaky sides like Leicester, Watford, Everton and Leeds. I'm not saying he won't get returns but I think there are better options

Completely agree with the "sporadic" returns. Toney had been in my team since the middle of last season. And I know what you mean. The occasional hauls help massive rank jumps.

Who do you think are better options currently in the game? Of course, Haaland, Mitrovic and Jesus?

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years

Wilson short term (I mean it might not but I'll just always assume he's going to get a few games then get injured), Scamacca if he gets a consistent run (I think he's a really gifted player and can score some fantastic goals, looks like he's still getting to grips with the league mind but he's getting there), I'm even a bit tempted by Brennan Johnson

Is Sterling worth 10m? I think with the 8m midfielders which are crawling out from underneath their rocks provide better value?

Dasilva is warming my bench permanently. He is only needed worst case scenario. I am keeping him. He was one of Brentford's best performers before he got injured and was out for 18 months.

I have no need to get rid of him for other bench fodder Bailey, Neto Andreas etc.

Right now, no. Chelsea in transition and he's played in two different positions under Potter so hard to know where he may settle. I brought him in just before Tuchel got sacked and will hold until I WC in GW13 but I wouldn't bring him in if I didn't have him. Hopefully picks up something with a few good fixtures ahead but I doubt I'll be keeping after that, if I didn't have to remove Arsenal and City assets I'd consider moving him on

Someone on here said he was rested having played for Czech Republic. Although as West Ham kept a clean sheet I guess his place could be under threat. I think I'm just going to wait and see what happens against Fulham as I don't need to play him in that game anyway.

Seeing this question a fair bit and it really is as simple as Kehrer > Coufal at RB and Dawson is a more natural CB than Kehrer. I.e. coufal is no longer first team.
