Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the expected goal (xG) data from the last six matches, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

The idea is to revisit these tables at regular intervals throughout the season, in an attempt to identify any recurring patterns and trends.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

First up, let’s take a look at the recent xG data over the last six matches.

It’s worth remembering, though, in the cases of Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea, that both teams have only played five matches under Roberto De Zerbi and Graham Potter respectively.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain managerless. The latter, however, will have Unai Emery installed in time for Gameweek 15.

XG: LAST SIX MATCHES

Not surprisingly, Manchester City are top for xG in the last six matches. Pep Guardiola’s side have racked up in excess of 2.0 xG against Southampton (2.47), Manchester United (3.30) and Aston Villa (2.10), while only Liverpool (0.98) have been able to keep their tally under 1 xG.

Newcastle United and West Ham United sit just below the champions, which may raise a few eyebrows.

However, if we break Newcastle’s figures down match-by-match (see below), we can see 3.55 of their 10.57 xG total was accumulated in one match at Fulham, when the hosts were reduced to 10 men inside the first 10 minutes. Still, it’s safe to say The Magpies are moving in the right direction again under Eddie Howe.

NEWCASTLE XG BREAKDOWN: LAST SIX MATCHES
GW8 (BOU)GW9 (ful)GW10 (BRE)GW11 (mun)GW12 (EVE)GW13 (tot)Total
Newcastle1.923.551.530.911.461.2110.57

Whereas Newcastle have overachieved their xG figure by +2.43, West Ham have underperformed in front of goal, scoring eight goals from 10.42 xG. It’s also worth noting The Hammers have faced an easier set of opponents in that six-match run: Bournemouth (h), Liverpool (a), Southampton (a), Fulham (h), Wolves (h) and Everton (a).

Despite some iffy form, Liverpool have maintained their status as a top-four attack, they have simply failed to put away a lot of their chances (-3.25 xG delta), the same of which can be said for Aston Villa (-3.68). The Villans’ fixture against Chelsea in Gameweek 11 stands out, when Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.5m) made a number of brilliant saves, the most notable being from close range to deny Danny Ings (£6.6m).

Brentford have been surprisingly flat, too, failing to score in four of their last six matches.

Elsewhere, Leicester City have been particularly clinical (+6.11), while Wolves just can’t seem to put the ball in the net, summed up best by Diego Costa (£5.5m): the 34-year-old has amassed 12 shots inside the box and three big chances since making his debut without scoring.

If there was ever a time to get ahead of your rivals by captaining someone other than Haaland then this is the week to do so ... be bold, go hard or go home ... Harry Kane, this is your time to shine and welcome to my Captaincy 🙂

I'm of this opinion too. Spurs haven't been impressive this season and have had 2 tough games and results in the last 6 days, and even going back into last season under Conte they've struggled with/after midweek games a lot. I could be way off but I'd be surprised to see them score more than 1, maybe 2 goals. Then again even with just 1 goal Kane is probably likely to pick up 9pts so not like that's bad.

….and Bournemouth have an excellent record at stopping ‘big hitters’ from scoring. They are the only team this season to stop Haaland from scoring and yes, they were stuffed 9-0 by Liverpool, but Salah wasn’t on the scoresheet. The only ‘usual suspect’ to have scored against them is Mitrovic, but that was a pen….. just sayin’.

I am loving all of the Haaland debate.

I think if he starts he comes off at 2-0.

On the bench he is unlikely to come on but could be a cameo if game is tight and only 1-0.

The other scenario no one is really talking about is that he starts but his injury flares up and he goes off early.

Leicester defence is much improved too.

All of the above suggests single digit contribution of 0-8 points this week so logically Kane, Salah or Jesus (feels like he is due) should have a higher ceiling.

Of course it could be all games from Pep and Haaland smashes it.

But there are always a few weeks a season where rank rise opportunities are there for the brave.

Without knowing the extent og injury or even health (had fever) its difficult to SAY much but your point on being subbed off cause of injury when injury is reported before hand is often neglected as a argument. Also if not 100% it will affect his game.
Leicester, with some easier games mind you, have shown better form and shape. While they had a rough start, stats in those games were not as bad as it looked.
Also, they looked like a team tryinh to play Rodgers out, now they seem to have turned.

Hi again. Saving FT or Making a move?

    (A) Save FT .. Guehi to play if Haaland out
    (B) Welbeck > Darwin (LEE / tot / SOU) .. Andreas (EVE) 1st on bench
    (C) Welbeck > Toney (WOL / nfo / mci) .. good 2 next fixtures

    Pope
    Cancelo - Trippier - White
    Salah (V) - Foden - Zaha - Marti - Andreas
    Haaland (C) - Mitrovic
    Bench : Guehi - Welbeck - Neco

Roll and have 2 FTs next week seems good to handle tough fixtures, but Haaland could miss out and hurt this GW.

A or B are both good moves. Darwin is a huge upgrade on Welbz. That said 2FT for gw15 will be useful and Andreas is also in good form as well

I started Andreas last week and I'm happy to start him this week against EVE (H) too.

If we know more about Haaland missing the game, I'd not be reluctant to make a Darwin move.

Afraid of having Andreas' points on bench when more people started him after their last week upset.

I wouldn't worry about that, he is never going to be a high % start even though he should be

clearly overlooked by his price 🙂

love watching the moments his cross is met by Mitrovic in the box.

yes - exactly this. So you don't need to worry about a rank fall if you don't play him and he scores points, you just ned to think about whether he is the best option because he is likely to score points

Repost with Clean Sheet Odds added as I'm still struggling to make a call on this.

Place these in order for the best starting option for gw14? 1st one starts, the other two are 2nd and 3rd subs behind Andreas

    A - Gomez (LEE) - 38%
    B - Guehi (SOU) - 36%
    C - Dier (bou) - 38%

    Pope
    Cancelo Trippier xxxx
    Foden Martinelli Saka Zaha
    Haaland Kane Mitro

    Ward, Andreas, xxxx, xxxx

    Cheers

      C

Bournemouth could make it a full 0-0 but can’t see them scoring.

Upside wise, I would start Dier.

Frequently involved in attacking when Spurs have corner and favorite on CS odds.

Gomez, then Guehi on the bench order per their CS odds and team defending stats.

      Cheers guys.

Looks very much like Dier is the consensus here

Ok let’s try it this way,

    Best option?

    A) White + Zaha

    B) Guehi + Saka

Tough - B just but preference would be a hybrid - White + Saka

I can also get White and Saka for free. Would you do this?

I'm normally pretty desisive but can't even spell now.

is Doherty or someone else my weakest link?

    2 FTs.

I like Eze and Mount but perhaps Saka is the answer?

      Raya
      Trippier, Guéhi, Cancelo
      Salah, Martinelli, Trossard, Mount
      Mitrovic, Wilson, Haaland

      Ward. Eze, Doherty, Coady

Not IMO - IT'd do Mount and Mitro to Nunez and Almiron

That's a good team fo for this week.

I may use one of 2 FT to get Arsenal DF and bench Guehi.

Btw, I don't think chance for CS in GW14-16 are good for both Coady and Guehi. I would sell one of them.

Alternatively, Mount have tough fixtures than others on GW14-16.
He could be the one if you feel higher ceiling in attackers.

Struggling to pick subs from this lot...
Even considering the Bench Boost! Good set of fixtures today. I've starred my likely subs.

    Pope Ward*
    Cancelo Robertson Trippier White* Guehi*
    Foden Zaha Martinelli Saka Andreas*
    Haaland Toney Darwin

    Thoughts?

Bench boost is an option but you're best off saving that for a DGW (obviously)

Think your subs are correct but White as first sub. I think ARS keep a CS vs NFO though. Palace will be better this week too so possible CS there too...but you gotta bench someone

Guehi & Eze will be nailed. Edouard should be too. Only a very small chance Mateta starts but unlikely.

    Current squad, think I'm set:

    Kepa
    Cancelo Tripp Robbo
    Foden Martinelli Saka Andreas
    Haaland(c) Toney(vc) Darwin

    Ward Maddison Cresswell Neco

    GL all!

    Cheers

Which option? 1 FT, 1.4 itb

    A) Guehi > Arsenal defender
    B) Zaha > Saka
    C) roll FT

    Raya
    Cancelo - Trippier - Guehi
    Salah (v) - Foden - Martinelli - Zaha
    Haaland (c) - Mitrovic - Toney

    I have 2FT-s, 0.3m. How would you use 1FT?

    Raya (Ward)
Tripp VVD Saliba (Cresswell, N. Will)
    Salah Zaha Martinelli Andreas (Jensen)
    Kane Mitro Haaland*
