We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Sunday’s two fixtures in our Scout Notes summary.

The round-up is briefer-than-usual, given that we’re now on a six-week break from the Premier League.

We will, however, return with plenty of wider FPL analysis of each club in the build-up to the Boxing Day restart.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL.

Aston Villa recorded their first away league win of the season at the Amex on Sunday, having come from behind to beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1.

Alexis Mac Allister (5.4m) put the hosts ahead after just 49 seconds, his fifth league goal of the season, as he capitalised on an under-hit Emiliano Martinez (£4.9m) pass.

However, Villa responded well, with Danny Ings’ (£6.6m) brace of goals from three shots handing Unai Emery his second league win in a row.

Ings, meanwhile, has now scored four goals in his last four Premier League appearances, as many as in his previous 26 games combined.

“Very, very good work from Danny Ings. We changed our shape a little bit with him because I was thinking his best position is between the two centre-backs. We needed good passes and assists to him, and I think if we could do it, we would help Danny to give his best performance.” – Unai Emery

Villa had only scored three goals in seven away matches prior to Gameweek 16 but looked more dangerous in Emery’s 4-2-2-2, which today included John McGinn (£5.1m) further forward, a role that was reminiscent of the one he takes up for Scotland.

They still look nervy playing out from the back, but will now look forward to the Boxing Day restart with renewed optimism having moved up to 12th in the table.

As for Brighton, they struggled to create chances, despite switching to a back-three formation after an hour, registering just two shots on target.

Leandro Trossard (£7.1m), who reverted to a left-wing role with Danny Welbeck (£6.5m) back leading the line, was relatively quiet (one shot, two key passes), despite Villa’s narrow shape giving up plenty of space on the flanks.

Elsewhere, Adam Webster (£4.5m), Kaoru Mitoma (£4.9m) and Ollie Watkins (£7.1m) all missed out through illness, while Leon Bailey (£4.5m) was only fit enough for a place on the bench, having felt sick on Saturday. However, his 74th introduction hardly mattered, as he picked up a booking and ended Gameweek 16 on zero points.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez; Gross, Dunk, Colwill, Estupinan (Lamptey 81); Mac Allister, Caicedo; March, Lallana (Enciso 5, Veltman 59), Trossard; Welbeck (Undav 59)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Digne (Augustinsson 82); McGinn, Kamara, Luiz (Dendoncker 83), Ramsey (Young 69); Buendia (Bailey 74), Ings

Substitute Alejandro Garnacho (£4.3m) grabbed a dramatic late winner as Manchester United beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

The Argentine slotted in from a wonderful Christian Eriksen (6.3m) pass, adding to his two EFL Cup assists against Aston Villa in midweek.

“That is fantastic. First he shows the mentality you need. Under stress he’s performing, he’s coming in, he has an impact, he has the belief. Twice in three, four days, so that is really good. I’m really happy that we can bring a young player up and it shows that when players deserve it they get their chances. That is the first one but we have to bring more. He’s great. I like that he has a big belief and that’s great to work with. He likes football. He’s a real pleasure.” – Erik ten Hag on Alejandro Garnacho

In truth, United had struggled to cause the hosts problems in the second half, but the youngster’s introduction after 72 minutes helped turn the tide in their favour.

Eriksen, meanwhile, scored the opener from a Bruno Fernandes’ (£9.8m) assist, his first competitive goal for the club.

Elsewhere, Anthony Martial (£6.7m) had his moments and United did benefit from his mobility in attack, but Marcus Rashford (£6.7m) underwhelmed a little.

As for Fulham, they were on the front foot for large periods and were unfortunate to lose.

With Tyrell Malacia (£4.2m) lining up as a make-shift right-back in place of the suspended Diogo Dalot (£4.8m), Marco Silva’s side targeted that flank and regularly looked to overload it, with Willian (5.5m), Tom Cairney (£4.7m) and Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) all causing problems.

And that’s where the hosts’ equaliser originated from, with substitute Daniel James (£6.0m) netting his first goal of the season against his former club from Cairney’s low cross.

“When you are 1-0 up in an away game, it is not possible to have the whole right wing open.” – Erik ten Hag

23.9 per cent owned Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) was a threat, especially from set-pieces, whilst pulling the strings in behind Carlos Vinicius (£5.5m). However, Fulham did miss Aleksandar Mitrovic’s (£6.8m) presence up front and there is a notable drop-off when he isn’t available. Indeed, Vinicius had just nine touches in the first-half.

Fulham XI: Leno; Cordova-Reid, Diop, Ream, Robinson; Palhinha, Cairney (Onomah 90+2); Wilson (James 59), Andreas, Willian; Vinicius

Manchester United XI: de Gea; Malacia, Lindelof, Martinez, Shaw; Casemiro, Eriksen; Elanga (McTominay 55), Fernandes, Rashford; Martial (Garnacho 72)

Will be a bit like preseason for players not going to Qatar. A few friendly games to work on stuff and hope to get a step on clubs with a lot of World Cup players.

There is going to be a huge potential to gain rank

Those in top10k will most due to fear follow with the same functioning template of Pope /Trippier/Arsenal defence / Kane Haaland

Many of those players will be tired or injured.

The likes of a fully rested Martial / Zaha / with nice fixtures could make big gains over the field first 2-3 weeks

R u really not going to have Kane and Trippier just cuz they played the world cup?

If Kane and Trippier lets say get to a WC final they will not be playing week 17 and will needing a break

Its very easy to get them back at any time.

          People are way too conservative.

And yes ive dont this before for many years and have a couple of top 10ks finishes. Its all about picking the correct moments to do so. Trippier if he played until a week before wc 17 is fine to go without or bench for a few weeks

No thanks. I'm not giving up 0.5m team value for 1 game to lose the best defender in the game. This is why u have subs.

They're in the top 10K because they know what they're doing. Hardly going to pick fatigued players.

Fully rested Zaha and Martial will still be inconsistent.

If you think the majority of players in the top10k know what they are doing you are looking at this game wrong

For every player who picked Bowen and got unlucky (he is -2 xGI) someone else picked Almiron 6 weeks ago when he had nothing to show for it and is massively over performing

            • 14 Years

He's overperforming only because Howe has massively improved his confidence in front of goal which was previously abysmal.

I would suggest you look into underlying data statistics for professional football as its nothing to do with confidence.

Almiron underlying data which summaries his likelihood of assisting or scoring based on every footballer in every match they have records for shows his numbers are way off and would predict he will not be able to score or assist anywhere near what he is currently doing

Salah for example who is just a couple of points behond almiron has underlying data for shooting and assisting right in line what he is producing.

This happens in every season that for some reason (you may like to call it confidence and imply Howe and Almiron are in control of the process) a player does well and then dissappears

Lets see, if its confidence Almiron should continue to do well. Id wager he will regress back to below his currently career level performance which has shown him to be below average based on 10 years of data.

He's only exceeding his xg by 2 goals. That's still amazing value even if he scores 2 less. I'll take 4th or 5th best mid instead of 1st best at the price I got him.

I would be massively surprised he continues his hot streak

But i also really like people are continuing to buy him

He can be added to the players of years gone by people were certain now had 'confidence' and were much improved,...not just random variance

Ryan one season wonder Fraser comes to mind

It's not just confidence or a hot streak u know. Newcastle as a team are top 4 contenders. Don't be too focused on past histories. They're only gonna improve with the amount of cash they have to spare now.

I agree Newcastle have improved, Almiron may have improved but he is running very hot and will regress

Both of these can be true.

Id wager Alimiron wont be in the starting 11 this time next year even if Newcastle only buy a semi decent player

Yes I don't expect him to keep outscoring KDB and Salah but since he is and is playing for Newcastle and I got him at 5.3m I don't really see any argument for not having him when his underlying data is still decent.

                        Once more to be clear

Its not my opinion, im basing this on underlying predictive data of assists and goals for both combos

One combo is going to rely on further over-performance (only Messi has done this, )

the other is based on what they are currently producing and for them to simple maintain it (Foden and Saka could both easily out perform their underlying - but they dont even need to to win)

Saka and Foden have very good career level underlying and are both young and still improving

+ they finish to a decent level

Over performing is producing 0.9xGI for 10 weeks when your 10 year average is around 0,2 (Almiron)

Foden and Saka are around 0,65xGi consistently past few years (from memory)

No algorithims involved. Simple record each game a player plays and his assists and goals related actions related to everyone game and player ever

You understand Almiron isn't the one producing his xgi...It's the team because of how much they've improved. This is the reason that historical 0.2 matters very little.

Zimo , i feel we are talking in circles

I would please suggest you read more if you are interested in this , you current understanding is not correct and your above statement is also incorrect

his xGi is based on his xA +x G, his xA is related to his team-mates finishing to a certain extent - and Newcastle are not suddendly finishing better

His xG is based on Almiron himself being in positions to score - his current data shows no much difference compared to his career data, a very tiny improvement

He is just finishing at messi level for these weeks (without getting messi level chances) and isnt getting any better at creating xGI

Not to mention that in the last 6-8 weeks, Newcastle have been posting xG numbers that are very similar to what City have posted in that time

Almiron hadnt been a part of that much.

Wilson for example has some excellent underlying data amongst the best in the league in that time

Pretty sure xA is related to the quality of the chances he creates and xG to the quality of chances he gets which his teammates are gonna provide. And since he's never been in a good team before his positioning doesn't matter if he's not getting those chances. And Foden and Saka have not done it consistently for the past few years. Just the 1 year. Again in which Foden was significantly rotated which will happen again. And neither of them overpeformed like they are right now so they will also regress which u need to hope they don't to outscore Miggy and KDB cuz historically KDB has overperformed consistently and Miggy won't regress to the extent u think just because he played in a worse team before.

Zimo lets leave at that , if Almiron had improved similar to Newcastle (they are much better on all underlyings) then we would not be debating this

Almiron underlying data is not hugely better -he isnt anywhere in the top 20 of midfielders this year last i checked

Saka and Foden are not overperforming btw and both are up near the top

They are matching their underlyings, Saka was actually under performing for most of the season to date

Foden has 3 goals more than he should and Saka has 3 more assists than he should. Almiron also has 3 more goals than he should but his xG is more than Foden and Saka so I don't know what you're talking about. Saka and Foden have better xA.

Howe won't spend it stupidly though. They're improving nicely, nice balance, players fighting for their places and likes of Pool and Chelsea underperforming and United improving but not rapidly, so they could still get top 4 without loads of reinforcements.

Yep, watched and played to a decent standard for many decades. You realise this (what i talk about) is an entire industry now with 1000s of people employed just on player analysis via data and modelling

You should also be aware every well functioning club on the global stage is using these underlying stats analysis with Data analysts to construct their teams

Its why Liverpool went from barely 7th to winning everything (PL, CL, World club, Fa cup etc) in the space of 5 years without spending massively and why United have been mostly a mess ( i would also suggest reading into the many criticises of how United are doing recruitment in the past decade)

They (Liverpool) were one of the first in England to implement this approach (everyone is doing it now) to pick out players the market didnt notice were wayyy better than the eye test could see

Or do you think the eye test would have suggested back in 2016 (When Liverpool were a mess) that in order to win everything and barely spend 200million they should get their core players from a group of ok players (based on eye test) from Southampton, Fiorentina, Salzburg , Hull City , Schalke , Hoffenheim and a ok youth team midfielder to right back

And no im not a Liverpool fan.

Thats indeed my point , at this stage everyone knows this , and yet people still buy Almiron

(To be clear he has improved , but his levels are Messi like currently )

Because he was level 0, ex MLS, hardworking, hard running, great atitude and teamwork, but when he got near the goal he panicked. Any level above that is relatively huge.

no again this is wrong. If he had a finishing problem then he would have good xGi e.g 0.6 but in the past 10 years be massively underperforming eg. be - 0.4xGi per game or something

He wasnt, this is a narrative that is not backed up by any data. Almiron was never putting up any good numbers or even average numbers, his numbers were just poor to start with and had nothing to do with poor finishing

Curious about your view that Liverpool didn't spend massively. From 16/17 into 18/19:

                    Mane €41m
                    Wijnaldum €27m
                    VVD €85m
                    Oxlade-Chamberlain €38m
                    Salah €42m
                    Alisson €62m
                    Keita €60m
                    Fabinho €45m

A select few there from 3 seasons amounting to €400m isn't spending much?

                      Its all relative

They went from a team around 7th to winning everything and beating teams who have spent billions in that time. It shows what you can (could since every team does it now) do with analytics

And the majority of those buys were driven by selling well and buying well

You buy Salah , you do better, you get CL money to allow you to buy Allison etc. So they made way more revenue too.

Everton have spent similar in the same time peroid

They didn't go to a " team winning everything" though did they ? Other teams haven't spent billions in that time either. Some balance is required here , exaggeration proves nothing

It's fine to note teams that have spent similarly but poorly in that time, but that's not the point. Do you think €400m+ in 3 seasons is an example of a team becoming successful "without spending massively"?

They did win every trophy they entered in that 5 year spell

While also competing against teams for those trophies who are billion dollar clubs

If City or PSG or Real or United spent money as well as Liverpool - which they could have Liverpool should not be able to compete based on revenue

They did and its a relative success

they made over 200mil in that time in sales

Plus they went from outside CL to insider which gave them another 100mil or so.

Yes they spent , but they didnt spend anywhere near clubs around them and yet still manage to win or compete most years.

Klopp and his team did an excellent job which they wont most likely be able to do again - we are already seeing how hard it is this year

That is complete rubbish . They didn't win "every trophy they entered " in that 5 year spell from 2016 onwards. Billion dollar spend is very different to the way it's usually quoted in euro or sterling. Pool in the last 10 years have a net spend of only £66M less than Chelsea .

I don't disagree with them spending well or their income from sales like Coutinho or Sterling helping hugely, but that still doesn't mean that they didn't spend and effectively rebuilt an entirely new squad through transfers. Apart from TAA and Henderson, who of that successful squad wasn't brought in during/just prior to that period of time? It's still something that was enabled due to expenditure, and not every move has worked out either

5.3m to spend for that spot. I can double Arsenal DF or split the fund to upgrade 3.9m.

        Ward - Iversen
        Trippier - White - X - Dalot - 3.9

Plus Cancelo has more attacking threat than Akanji and Botman has more CS potential than Dalot. Darwin is still a relatively unknown PL quantity compared to the steady, if not exactly spectacular, Toney.

    Cristiano Ronaldo.

How has he managed to become such a disgrace? Aside from the eyes of his fanboys, does he realise how bad he's looking?

Of course he will. Ronaldo plus 10. And he will be glad to face England or Netherlands as usual.

        Greetings from Portugal.

The single striker era is over
Three up front pressing every ball
      Not Ronny's game

Ronaldo really fecked up his interview. Twitter is filled with everyone just straight up calling him out and hating him.

This surely signals his exit from the club now. He's been foolish and is putting more pressure on himself at the WC to perform, and I've read a lot of Portuguese have been feeling his time has passed for them a while ago and that they need to move forward without him. I wonder how he'd cope if Messi managed to outdo him again and won the WC at his final attempt

I kinda wanna see Messi win now just to see what'll happen 😆 I bet he has a breakdown of some sort cuz of his narcissistic qualities.

Argentina are my pick so I won't be too surprised if it happens. When you think of both players and what they've achieved and look at the difference of their attitudes, it's remarkable how poorly Ronaldo has carried himself towards the end of his career

Interview with Piers Morgan of all people for The Sun of all places. Said he has no respect for ETH who doesn't respect him and that the club have disrespected him and tried to get rid of him for the last year

And what disrespect has Ten Hag showed him? Benching him because he's not playing well. Allowing him back in the team after he refused to get subbed on and walked off the field. Then made him captain the last game. That's Ten Hags disrespect.

Do u agree with Ronaldo or not?

Is style of play certainly doenst suit the game of today, pressing etc.. But have utd made a fool out of him u think? He could have left last season and if its to be believed it'd wouldn't let him leave...

I believe the club were ‘willing to listen to offers’ but none came

Personally I think he’s bitter that he isn’t first choice any more, and under a manager he doesn’t have wrapped around his finger

Ronaldo will always have his fans but we saw a lot of reports that said his claims were rubbish. He wanted to go to a team in the UCL, both ManUtd and his agent reached out to those clubs to try to get him out but nobody wanted him, or at least for the few that might have they couldn't afford his wage demands. Had a huge concrete offer from Saudi Arabia / UAE I think but didn't want it. I don't get why he didn't buy his own contract out or reduce his demands if he wanted it so much

AnaIogue watch in a digitaI age. No big cIub now pIays the styIe of footbaII that suits him and he has to press, but can't/won't. So he gets benched. What is teIIing is his comments about how the infrastucture is stiII the same as when he was 20 and that nothing has changed.

Look, I've been playing this game for a long time, I'm a dinosaur, I'm past it, I'm irrelevant. I get it. BUT, I loved scoring points back in the day. You know, when your FPL assets would score every week?

    2007/08 2187 12696
    2008/09 1932 65473
    2009/10 2194 81609
    2010/11 2098 13298
    2011/12 2139 20876
    2012/13 2195 14172
    2013/14 2124 553181
    2015/16 2148 109341
    2016/17 2269 21410
    2017/18 2207 111415
    2018/19 2193 297629
    2019/20 2363 8933
    2020/21 2422 57596
    2021/22 2444 204541

This is not nearly a HoF or even nearly commendeble record but it's not bad for a man committed to so many other things in life. Modern FPL is all about scrapping for points here and there, and it's not fun, not nearly fun enough. Rotation and schedules and xG have made the game a misery and I commend any and all that enjoy it, it just means it's moved on from a game that I loved to play for over a decade.

Gerrard/Lampard/Ronaldo/Tevez/Drogba/Henry/Aguero (C) I miss you all, I miss scoring points, I miss a game where 60-70 was the GW score over a paltry-hard-fought 30-45 points, The game is in the bin. As am I. And I wish you all the best.

    Hands Guber, singing off.

As I was reading this, and before I even got to the bottom of your post, I instantly thought of Lampard, and how doing well ACTUALLY reflected doing well in the game.
I agree wholeheartedly with your points, it’s a game now that has lost all of its fun factor and integrity, just so spoon-fed and diluted now. Shame, I miss scoring points also.

your last 2 seasons have been your highest scoring ones, just goes to show how much more competitive the game has become when last season was your best ever but you had one of your worst ranks
