A couple of weeks ago we put together an article that looked at the recovery times for each Premier League club over the festive period.

The absence of a round of fixtures between Boxing Day and New Year means that most clubs (bar Leeds United and Manchester City) were handed a healthy breather between Gameweeks 17 and 18. We didn’t see too much rotation as a consequence.

But it’s the short gap between Gameweeks 18 and 19 that could pose a few problems on the teamsheet front, so we here make a quick revisit to this piece to look at the upcoming turnaround times.

“Sports science says you need at least 72 hours to recover.” – Jurgen Klopp

“It’s a ridiculous schedule. We all know that players aren’t fully recovered for 72 hours after a game.” – Brendan Rodgers on previous years’ scheduling

It’s worth mentioning a few factors here that may make rotation not the threat it usually is: many players go into this busy period off the back of a lengthy rest thanks to the World Cup, there are no 48-hour turnarounds as in previous years and an upcoming FA Cup third-round weekend allows Premier League managers to rest and rotate further.

GAMEWEEK 18-19: OVERVIEW

Thanks to moderator Legomane for the colour-coded graphic above (click to expand).

TURNAROUND TIMES: GAMEWEEK 18-19

GW18-19 Turnaround (in hours, to the nearest half-hour)
Liverpool67.5
Brentford68
Arsenal72.5
Brighton72.5
Nottm Forest73
Bournemouth75
Everton75
Fulham75
Newcastle75
Aston Villa76
Spurs76
Man Utd77.5
Leicester City94
Chelsea97.5
Southampton98.5
Crystal Palace99
Leeds United99
Wolverhampton Wanderers101.5
West Ham United118
Manchester City123

Liverpool were handed the harshest turnaround times in the busy period between Gameweeks 11-13 and the schedulers have it in for the Reds again, with their gap between Gameweeks 18 and 19 the shortest in the division.

Jurgen Klopp’s troops play in the early kick-off in Gameweek 19, at least, so we might at least get a heads-up on any early team news.

Brentford are the only other side with a sub-72-hour turnaround but at least they are in the same boat as their Gameweek 19 opponents from Merseyside.

Manchester City – whose manager Pep Guardiola made only one line-up change against Everton anyway – are on easy street, with a full five days in between their Gameweek 18 and 19 fixtures. That doesn’t mean Guardiola won’t change things around for the Chelsea game (who knows what diabolical schemes he has in mind), just that fatigue ought not to be a factor.

Doing some early planning — best move with 2 FTs?

    A) KDB + Darwin + Martinelli —> Mitrovic + Salah + Mount (-4)
    B) Darwin + KDB —> Mitrovic + Mount (2 FT)
    C) Darwin + KDB —> Havertz + Mount (2 F)
    D) Darwin —> Mitrovic (1 FT)
    E) Darwin —> Havertz (1 FT)

    Cheers!

Repost. Am I crazy for considering Salah > Andreas instead of Darwin > Mitro?

It would allow me to downgrade a midfield slot (already used BB) and give me funds for Kane in the following week.

It takes a risky person to bench a player with these latest returns

      8, 12, 7, 12, 11, 2, 9, 6, 7, 7, 5, 8

1 blank in last 12. Bonus points in 9 of those 12.

Went Martial in the end. Just as Darwin getting hella chances - even if BOU a better fixture for sure.

May well be punished with potential United DGW, but he's getting subbed early, doesn't look as good on the eye. Also I don't have Salah for now.

Think it could go either way next week.

Struggling to know who to go with in defence. Not many good options given fixtures and the quality of the teams. After GW19, I think double Newcastle (Pope and Trippier) makes sense. Probably Cucurella from Chelsea. But beyond that it looks difficult.

Arsenal: They have Spurs, Man Utd, Man City and Everton (away) from GW20 - GW23.
Liverpool: Aren't keeping CS and the attacking options (TAA and Robertson) are expensive. A long-term injury to Robertson would make Tsimikas interesting though
Man City: They have Spurs (twice), Man Utd and Arsenal from GW20 - GW23.
Spurs: They have Man City (twice), Arsenal and Leicester (away) from GW20 - GW23.
Man Utd: Have Man City and Arsenal in GW20 and GW21. After that they look good.
Brighton: Don't keep CS under De Zerbi

        Curious why Mitro over Havertz?

        Mitro:
        Nailed 90 mins
        Slightly better double
Still on pens but poor taker
        On 4YCs

        Havertz :
        First choice CF
        Looked sharp

I think the xMins, comparing Mitro YC risk with Havertz rotation risk, probably come out quite similar if not in Mitro's favour. Better fixtures & better attacking team by far at the moment, more of a talisman. Havertz goes through these spells, always very short-lived, where he seems to be a good option for a couple of weeks but it always fades (did work out nicely in DGW last year though tbf when I had him)

Regarding to xMins, you might be right but I do think it's Havertz spot to lose. Interesting quote from Potter below. I agree Mitro is more of a talisman than Havertz and probably has the better set of doubles with that Leicester fixure

Graham Potter on Kai Havertz: "I think as a nine he gives you the flexibility and variability in the game. He can drop in but he can also threaten the backline and he can score. So I like him in that position."

    Now do I:
    A) Play as above
    B) Bring in Kepa & Diop for Iversen & White (-8) and BB

    Thanks all

A - plenty of doubles later and unlikely you'll need to get a - 8 to BB

Thanks mate, hopefully won’t be too damaging to bench Almiron

I'm currently benching him but can easily backfire. I can see Newcastle press causing arsenal problems

Agree that only dgw players to have for GW 20 are Haaland, kdb and Kane?

    Spurs: ars H, City A

    City: MUN A, Spurs H

Think I'm going in with Haaland, KDB, Kane, Kulusevski

Let’s see if Kulu gets started. Already have Kane, Haaland and considering keeping kdb too. Can get Kulu with FT.

Only have Andreas, Kepa and Cucurella for this dgw, but not sure if I want any others in my team. Would be to sell one of Darwin, Martinelli, Almiron or kdb, not very tempting

I still have to get Kane but left money itb to move Nunez to him so I'm OK there. Need to get rid of Foden so Kulu definitely tempting especially with Romero back and hopefully Richarlison and Bentancur back soon

    Should I:

    A) take out Cancelo for cucurella or perisic then take out Edouard for mitrovic
    B) take out Cancelo for cucurella or perisic then take out Edouard for mitrovic then take a hit for pope to kepa
    C) dont do anything do a different transfer

Being Liverpool keepers were so awful, maybe. Though Reina was good.

Despite the yellow card risk, Mitrovic will be my captain. You would have to assume that many wont go with Haaland this week so therefore the EO risk of going against him is greatly reduced.

I guess since he is still not suspended yet, he at least get the better fixture in the double

Think I might go for it too. Still a risk as I'm starting to get the impression that Haaland' EO isn't going to drop all that much (lot of Mitro YC fear), but I still like it

Also Mitrovic isnt the only double week player captain candidate and alternative to Haaland. Ive seen a few on twitter planning to captain Periera, Kepa and Chelsea attackers. I really dont think there is too much risk in going against Haaland this week.

Agree, would maximum get one of them and save a FT for next dgw, this one doesn’t sound too mount watering 😉

Castagne / Estupinan rotate well with those you have. Leicester will probably concede to Fulham but I like his attacking threat & CS are tough to find this GW. Estupinan at Everton, with a double in 21 looks decent too even if BHA aren't quite as solid anymore. Or you could double up on Newcastle although its not the best week for it right now

Who would you captain out of
    Mitro or Mount...?

Both options seems to have its positives and negatives
