Throughout the 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, our team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and guest contributors will be sharing their thoughts, tips and own transfer plans.

Here, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser talks about learning to dilute the online noise and play your own game when making transfers.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

We are in a state of FPL stalemate. Having done an aggressive 12-point hit last Gameweek, my instinct to bring in a Brighton and Hove Albion player this week, in particular Kaoru Mitoma (£5.0m), is very high.

However, as my fellow Pro Pundit Zophar rightly pointed out in his article here, the reasons to save the free transfer are plentiful. The reason I still struggle with this is that points are right there for the taking, especially with Brighton’s opponents Leicester City being behind only Leeds United for expected goals conceded (xGC) during the last six matches.

Additionally, with the subsequent attractive fixtures being Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (A) and Fulham (H), this temptation is going to be hard to resist. Tom Freeman did give me some ammunition for patience with his excellent dive into Miguel Almiron’s (£5.9m) numbers here.

MOVING PARTS

The thinking in my head is that, if I’m not buying Mitoma this week, do I want to go there next week instead? My answer is that, by having only one Arsenal defender in my squad, getting two of their attackers will probably be next week’s priority.

There is a risk-reward analysis you need to make, looking at how many players you have from the four teams likely to blank in Gameweek 25 – Newcastle United, Manchester United, Brighton and Brentford – should the first two overcome their Carabao Cup semi-final opponents.

It’s worth noting that there are a few moving parts to this, as Brighton might still not blank, but my FPL philosophy of ‘if you’re sure of getting a player, do it at the start of a good fixture run to maximise the chance of a haul’ might have to take a back seat due to such moving parts.

A lot of people are complaining about FPL being template-heavy right now but Thursday night showed that there are enough picks to boost your ranking if you’re paying close attention. My 12-point hit was to set up for the long-term, as I wanted the right three for Manchester City’s Double Gameweek 23 and Man United’s potential Double Gameweek 22.

I obviously knew the risks of going for a semi-injured Anthony Martial and I do have a bias there because I have always felt that people don’t realise how much of a first-choice Martial is under ten Hag.

That said, the injury risks are high and I decided to ‘semi-bluff’, which might not be for everyone. I also got a fair amount of stick for shifting Joao Cancelo (£7.2m) and Phil Foden (£8.1m) out for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) and Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) but the simple reasoning is that I wanted to get what I believed were the right three Man City players instead of convenient transfers.

While that is always risky for a Pep Guardiola team, it appeared to me that Mahrez was their sharpest attacker since the restart so I chose him for the mid-term.

DILUTE THE ONLINE NOISE

There are a lot of ways to play FPL and I’ve always said there is no right or wrong approach. With so much content creation and information out there, we are sometimes led to playing in one certain manner and that occasionally subdues our instincts, removing our individuality from the game.

We’re all battling this throughout the season and, about two months ago, I made a decision to play FPL in my own way and dilute the noise so that I have only three or four reliable soundboards to rely on when making decisions.

People never realise how much thought FPL managers put into making moves, as they are carefully weighted. While talking about that to others, I promise you no more than 5% of those thoughts go in the reply you get.

The most important replies from your soundboards are fact-based ones that cite factors that you might have missed out on while weighing up your decisions and these are the most important ones. Opinion-based replies like ‘player x is historically a troll’ are looser, in my opinion, and should always be taken with a pinch of salt. As long as your decisions are well-researched, you should be fine.

That’s it from me this week, as we all quietly observe this state of FPL stalemate (or not) and wait for the upcoming storm!

Totally agree with diluting the online noise.

I tend to avoid Twitter and these pages when making transfer decisions and you’ll just get the fear of missing out like the Haaland TC this week and similar group think decisions.

I’ve had a bad season largely down to ignoring almiron and not captaining Haaland early season but I had Bruno and Mahrez this week and def wouldn’t have gone with them had I followed generic advice

Totally agree with you on avoiding twitter, my worst season was when I spent too long on there. You'll have to explain the group think decision on Haaland TC though? Best asset in the game plays 2x90mins. Outcome wasn't amazing but still think the decision was sound

Visibly off form. City sluggish post World Cup. Could have had reduced minutes because pep is pep.

Also most had captained so the gains for TC were pretty limited?

I’m not saying I’ll captain a wild punt that nobody owns for TC but not much to be gained given his ownership?

That argument that everyone else captained him so you don't gain as much is nonsense. Points total is all that matters at end of the season.

Any thought on who you will TC? You'll not be TCing any Man City then if worried about rotation. This was 2 games I was very confident Haaland would play both and the main reason I used it - plus Spurs are awful defensively.

          Haaland May be benched.

KDB has been rested. Previously hauled against wolves.

Stats wise extremely unlucky not to have more assists, averaging 2.5 shots a game. On most set pieces.

I have honestly come to think that the single biggest mental barrier to success is the notion of budget. This season, if budget weren't a concept we would probably be assembling teams of significantly less than 100m, not more. This I think is more important than cutting out noise. Some of the noise is harmful in hindsight. Some of it is harmful with foresight! But there are reasons that certain options get pushed to the fore and they tend to be decent options, if sometimes overhyped. The template generally delivers.

I went Son as a DGW punt after having seriously considered Bruno, and I really do think in hindsight that the reason I went for Son was that I could afford him. If the likes of Odegaard were 9m+ we would be more rather than less likely to go with him. We see money in the bank as wasted, but it can give us flexibility if the template changes.

it is interesting playing in a draft league as there's no prices and you take what player you can get, makes you think what the player will get for you rather than being focussed on price

Solid point, along with the reputation and history of players. Liverpool are not the same team, Almiron has not been the “joke” he was last season, and it’s been hard wrapping my head around the idea that premium defenders aren’t worth it. Plenty of other notions as well such as the idea that Haaland would have limited minutes this season, especially during his hauls in August

Hey mate, I actually didn't catch too much as I was on the way home from work, listened to first half then caught bits of second half. I'm fairly sure I'm benching Haaland, little unsure on other moves. Thinking of Cash to Schar, Cash to Dias, just risking playing Cash and rolling FT, moving KDB to JWP/Odegaard, very lost honestly

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 4 Years

The first half was so poor I thought it might even jolt the Haaland permacappers out of their routine. Quite suspicious that there's an issue (fitness/personal) with KDB that Pep is sort of concealing, even though the previous artcicle described it as a tactical decision. Even if just the latter, Alvarez did alright as a 10(ish) so I wonder if KDB might be pushed into a deeper role if Pep wants to continue with this.

I'm a bit sceptical about KDB too, I'm still considering removing him next week despite the upcoming double, moving Foden worked this week so it's not to say it can't work. I think I have too many issues in defence to risk making a change elsewhere so I just need to figure out if waiting an extra week is best or if I should just plump for Schar or Dias

I don’t understand the obsession with not being template (especially by content creators who are primarily responsible for a template existing in the first place).

This week according to Live FPL my template rating was 89%. But I scored 93 points and went up 200k spots from 440k to 240k (thanks Mahrez). I didn’t do anything to try to be very different and still made a massive rise.

Seems like if you try to actively go against the template you often get hurt.

But you’re assuming that if your team is template you’re following others, but that’s not necessarily true. I pay very little attention to EO for example.

Fair point regarding assumption. Seems your an exception to the rule. Has the content movement spoilt things potentially?

Cant argue with your last point either 🙂

I wouldn't call it an obsession. It's just another style of play that works for certain people.

How are you supposed to make up ground with identical players as those ahead of you? Especially if most of them also stick with the same captain week in week out, and mostly bring in more or less the same players. It's pretty much impossible to move up from 1m to 1k with this kind of approach. Prove me wrong. I dare you, I double dare you.

You have to double up on some DEF, MID or ATT, take a few risks, consider players with low ownership and potential to do well in the coming weeks, at least pick a different captain sometimes, anything. You have to be adjustable.

Wish we had more than 5 midfield slots for KDB/Mahrez, Fernandes, Rashford, Arsenal mids and Brighton mids. What midfield are you working towards owning?

If you're not going to get a Brighton Mid, then B. looks best.

But I'm probably going to roll the FT. Having 2x Its while Blanks and DGWs are being sorted will be quite useful.

If you can live without KDB and Salah and happy with a Mitrovic-priced striker, the bench fodder slot (bit unfair on Pereira as he's been great) can be upgraded.

I'm definitely switching to 352. Easily doable even with Kane instead of Mitrovic.

With Mahrez likely to be benched against wolves.

    A- Play Mahrez Bench Almiron

B- Almiron > Mitoma Bnech Mahrez

Quick question: what makes Mahrez likely to be benched vs Wolves? Is there a pattern you noticed? Something Pep said about him or another right winger?

        Not at all
He may want rest Mahrez for Arsenal.... Like KDB was benched yesterday.

          Ah, I see

I'd still risk Mahrez off the bench vs tired Wolves legs, as he's been growing into City's main outlet since the World Cup. Personally expect him to start, but yeah, Pep. I think I recall there was a fear that he'd be benched vs Spurs, yet *that* haul arrived

As much as I love Brighton mids... Almiron on the bench gives you one more GW to assess them, other options, and possible DGW strategies with 2 FTs in GW22

Playing your own game. Interesting. Does anyone else play the way I do?

I take a lot of hits, especially early on in a season.

I know knowledge > price rises. But I can't help but think "if player x rises, I can't get him", and I often transfer early too in order to get the player I want (despite the early transfer having risk associated with injury etc).

I can't wait for the next deadline, because it means I can then tinker again.

I'm slowly getting better at holding transfers (at least until closer to the deadline), but I don't think the taking hits is going away anytime soon.

Often my hit taking calms down in the second half of the season as we have more data on players and because of the usual team value I have, I can afford to wait longer rather than being priced out.

My overall rank is always garbage, but for me my focus is on my minileagues, which I often do ok in.

Just wondered if anyone else plays this way?

I've gone the other way and only make transfers at the last minute now. Covid season burned me with using transfers early and chips at wrong/unfortunate times. Team value argument is massively overrated as there is always cheap options who emerge, this season especially with cheap mids and FPL being generous with pricing. I would only make early transfers if I'd be priced out of a move I really want to make but its not happened so far this season

Last season was my 1st playing FPL & I took a lot of hits, certainly more than 20, but still did ok & finished 94k. Have reined it in a bit this year. The temptation is definitely strong in the early stages of the season, but less so now - especially with a strong 'benching headache' squad (as I would always be tempted by taking a hit rather than playing a cheap bench defender in a tricky fixture)
