Moving Target

Anthony Gordon (£5.2m) completed his transfer to Newcastle United over the weekend, a move that has polarised opinion on Tyneside.

The fee is the main talking point: the 21-year-old winger has signed for a reported initial £40m, rising to £45m with possible add-ons.

He’s altogether a cheaper prospect in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), however, so can his capture by the Magpies reinvigorate a player who was very much in the budget midfielder conversation in 2021/22?

We take a look in this Moving Target piece, where we have included data and images taken from our Premium Members Area.

GORDON’S FPL HISTORY

SeasonTeamStarts (sub appearances)GoalsAssistsBonusFPL points
2022/23Everton12 (4)30243
2021/22Everton25 (10)439100
2020/21Everton1 (2)0003
2019/20Everton4 (7)01117

Gordon worked his way through the Everton academy system before making his debut at the age of 16 in a Europa League match in December 2017.

But it wasn’t until 2019/20 that he made his Premier League bow, making 14 appearances – nine as a substitute – across two seasons. A goalless, 11-match loan spell at Preston North End also featured in 2020/21.

His breakout campaign came in 2021/22, when he appeared in all but three of the Toffees’ Premier League matches and became an integral part of the side that staved off the threat of relegation under Frank Lampard. A modest four goals and three assists arrived from his 35 run-outs, of which 25 came in the starting XI.

His star was arguably never higher than last summer, when he turned in some excellent performances for England under-21s. Gordon’s impact was such that there was talk of a huge offer from Chelsea but the move never materialised and the young midfielder’s form has really taken a tumble since, with Lampard leaving him out of six of his final seven Premier League starting XIs.

How much of that owed to poor on-field performances and how much of it was down to his head being turned by other clubs, of course, is another question.

IN QUOTES

“He’ll give us a lot. He’s a young player with huge potential to have a big impact on our season. Very quick, dynamic player. He’s versatile and can play on both sides. The best is yet to come from him. He can add something difference for us.

“I believe he will fit our style of play. He is an incredible athlete and has the ability to run box to box at very high speed. I think he has the athletic durability that we want in our wide players. He has the passion that the fans will feed off but Anthony will have to earn that support.” – Eddie Howe

“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.” – Anthony Gordon

Lewis is mostly rb isn't he?
      Definitely doesn't hurt his prospects
Ake and Laporte can play lb and I wouldn't be surprised if Pep signs a lb imminently too

Pep prefers to have an inverted full back in every game. Cancelo and Lewis are the only ones who can play this role (also Stones sometimes)

    1. Gw 22 Rodrigo Gw 23 White Mahrez
    2. Gw 22 Almiron Gw23 Akanji Odegaard

Will have Saka Martinelli KdB and Haaland in 23 either way!

He can sit, aye. I think the only time you're forced into a transfer is if you've got four players from the same team (ie if you already had an Arsenal triple-up and owned Trossard before his move).

If Felix does well in his remaining games I think we'll sign. Kante is kinda wishful thinking with his recent injury history.

Many, many players need to be cleared from the squad in the summer admittedly.

        Doesn't look very good.

Most expensive team ever made has Madeuke (who) & Badashile (who) and a £75m flop in goal. Kante is unfortunately over and Mount doesn't add enough.

Felix doesn't score enough goals to be main striker either.

The money spent on this team and you’re still relying on 3 sicknotes, a pensioner, unproven youngsters and Kepa - genuinely horrific squad management, especially considering the 8 year contracts being chucked about.

We'll see, I'm excited by the prospects of this team and just hope it can play some exciting stuff cause we've been pretty hard to watch for a number of years.

I'm off to the Bridge on Friday so hopefully see something special from Mudryk to begin to justify the spend.

Nkunku is better than all three forwards to be fair.

Aubamayang is going to be an interesting one, He's got another year on his £400k a week contract.

Pity he turned out like that, should have stayed at Barca.

Think Aubameyang is on 160k a week and will have a year left in the summer. Hopefully he can be offloaded back to Spain.

Lukaku is the big problem. 325k a week and no one will want him in the summer, including Inter Milan.

Stuck at end of last article...

Currently have Rashford and Shaw doubling this week with KDB, Mahrez, Haaland, Martinelli & Gabriel next week. 2FT but no money ITB. Logic suggests plugging those last Arsenal and United slots to set up for 22 and 23.

    a. KDB & Mitro -> Bruno & Nketiah. Needs a reversal (or a punt on another City Asset) for a triple up in 23.

    b. Kane & Almiron -> Bruno & Nketiah. Leaves me with the 3x3 assets doubling so could roll in 23 to better cater for blank.

    c. Keep KDB and Kane. Maybe punt on Almiron to Casemiro OR Mitro to Nketiah and roll the other. Latter means only Rashford and Shaw for the double. Maybe even Gabriel to Martinez and have 2FT for an Arsenal attacking triple up....

    1. Tonyawesome69

Agreed. Did that in 20 and it paid off handsomely.

But something about KDB to Bruno and back feels wrong, also losing KDB before a double also feels wrong given the only other "sensible" City assets are already in my team.

Yeah I'm not too sure on the KDB Bruno hokey cokey. I'm currently predicting Alvarez starting ahead of KDB in the Spurs game which makes the transfer an OK move. I don't have Mahrez and prefer his goal threat over KDB.

Not so worried about 25 as have enough transfers to move people on, but probably not if something unexpected happens.

Haven't got the money to make Ward to DDG work with Mitro to Nketiah and not sure losing Kepa is the right move

    I have 2 FT - 0.2M ITB:
    Kepa
    Cancelo - Trippier - Botman - White - Bueno
    KDB - Martinelli - Rashford - Andreas - Almiron
    Kane - Halland - Mitro

Do you agree with my plan?
GW22: Cancelo to Shaw and Mitro yo Nketiah (no Fernandes), TC Rashford
GW23: Almiron to Mahrez (3 Arsenal and 3 City)

Having Fernades on my team will kill all other transfers, do you think he is essential to do a -4 for KDB?

I think your move looks good. No to the hit for Bruno, you will want KDB in 23 so unless you take another hit you are just trading KDB's triple for Bruno's triple -4.

Salah and Martinelli -> Saka and Bruno

    Yay / nay?

    2ft's/0.2 ITB

    Ward, Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Bueno, Shaw, Schar
    Martinelli, Salah, KdB, Odegaard, Rashford
    Mitro, Haaland, Greenwood

I'd be tempted not to upgrade Martinelli this week and roll the transfer - can always do it next week, or if something unexpected comes along, you are still tripled on Arsenal with 2FT to cope

I had that exact squad a couple of GW back, and have have since done Kepa, Cancelo, Almiron to Ederson, Estupinian & Odegarrd for free, and I will be taking a hit before the GW deadline to do KDB to Bruno. The keeper switch has already backfired on me however. Today I think I'd do KDB to Bruno this GW, then Bruno, Cancelo and Almiron to Odegaard (or Saka), KDB (or Mahrez) and Akanji for a hit next GW.

    Would you rather:

    a) Nketiah & Ode
    b) Saka & Ode

So basically Saka vs Nketiah + 1.5m. Unfortunately I don't have the cash for Saka & Nketiah which would be my preferred combo.

Depends on which mid or forward you would be taking out to get Nketiah or Saka.

Mitro on the chopping block. Not totally averse to dropping Toney either and might take a punt on gnonto for the double

I've got Toney vs Soton and I'm starting him over Kane

Wouldn't lose him before that game. Maybe next GW

yeah definitely keeping for this week, but might offload him next week. Think I might move Mitro for Gnonto this week and Toney to Nketiah next week with Andreas going to Odegaard.

Other option is hold onto Toney and Bruno & Andreas -> Saka and Odegaard, but I kind wanna keep Bruno for a few more weeks as the fixtures are nice and he'll probably be a bit of a differential after everyone moves him on. Then ditch him for the blank.

Ok so its Mitro to Nketiah (which sounds a decent move), or who to Saka ?

            Kepa, Ward
            Shaw, Trippier, Gabriel, Perraud, Bueno
            Bruno, KDB, Rash, Mahrez, Andreas
            Haaland, Mitro, Toney

            2FT 0.4 ITB.

That's my current squad. Andreas, Mitro and Toney to play with and maybe Bruno after the double.

Not sure there really is a clear answer to this dilemma but I'm going for Nketiah FWIW

Yeah, probably one of those 50/50s that has the potential to ruin your season if you get it wrong 😀

Best option. Money isn’t an issue

    A) Saka
    B) NKetiah
    C) Odegaard

This isn’t a fair poll

      All equally good pick tbh

      I have A and C

Tough one as they are all good, would come down to if you need a FWD or a MID more. Otherwise maybe go Saka as he's on pens

Stats say Nketiah, but Jesus might be back in GW25

Odegaard is next in stats and leads on form, while Saka is close and has pens

2FT and need to sell a premium to afford Bruno. Which is the best way to do it:

    A. KDB to Saka/Odegaard
    B. Kane to Nketiah

      Has to be KDB

Should I save my transfer this weekend have 2FT next GW or make a transfer early?

Almiron & Toney to Marhez & Nketiah

Or maybe Almiron & Cucurella for Odegaard & City defender

    DDG,
    Trippier, White, Shaw,
    KDB, Mioma, Martinelli, Rashford
    Toney, Kane, Haaland

Ward, Almiron, Botman, Cucurella - 2M ITB

Very strong squad. I'd roll and focus more on picking the best XI for this GW

Chaps let me know your thoughts on the below, which one sounds good?

    A) Mitro to Nketiah + KDB to Bruno (-4)
    B) Mitro to Nketiah + Ederson to DDG (-4)

Plan is Andreas to Mahrez for my 3rd City player in GW22 if I go with one of these options

    C) Mitro to Neketiah (and worry about GW22 later)

What's your hit appetite? Option A might work out long-term because Mahrez has better form than KDB, while option C is simple and hitless

      Keeper hits are iffy

Everton have bid £40m for Conor Gallagher.

    Could be a disaster move.

Reinvesting the Gordon millions, not convinced its a good move for either Everton or Gallagher.
