Chelsea’s goalless draw with west London rivals Fulham is the focus of our latest Scout Notes piece.

IN-FORM KEPA

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s (£4.6m) fine Fantasy Premier League (FPL) form continued at Stamford Bridge on Friday, with another double-digit haul courtesy of a clean sheet, four saves and maximum bonus.

The Spaniard has now produced 29 points in the last three Gameweeks and 44 in seven appearances since football resumed after the World Cup. For context, that’s 11 more than next best Nick Pope (£5.5m) and 24 more than Ederson (£5.4m).

Under Graham Potter, Kepa is accumulating bonus at a faster rate than any other goalkeeper, thanks to his ability to make lots of saves whilst often racking up 30+ attempted passes due to Chelsea’s approach to playing out from the back. Paired with his passing accuracy, plus the fact the Blues don’t score many goals, and it’s easy to understand why he is doing so well.

Indeed, he took his bonus tally to 13 for the season against Fulham, more than any other ‘keeper despite not making his first start until Gameweek 9.

As for Chelsea, it’s now three clean sheets in a row, a run that coincided with Benoit Badiashile’s (£5.0m) introduction to the starting XI.

JAMES SUBBED ON 59 MINS

Reece James (£5.7m) made his return from injury against Fulham, lining up at right-back in Potter’s 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 formation.

The England international showed glimpses of his attacking potential and was able to push forward despite playing in a four, with £107m deadline day buy Enzo Fernandez (£5.0m) screening the backline. The Argentine looked sharp and certainly put himself about, winning more tackles (six) than any other player on the pitch.

However, James was cruelly subbed off on 59 minutes, just 30 or so seconds away from banking a clean sheet, as Potter looks to manage his workload. As a result, he has returned just one point in four of his last five appearances.

Elsewhere, the game also marked the return of fellow full-back Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) and Raheem Sterling (£9.7m) from injury, both of whom appeared from the bench in the second half.

Above: Reece James’ touch heatmap v Fulham

WHY MUDRYK WENT OFF AT HALF-TIME

January arrival Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) made his first start after an impressive cameo at Anfield last time out. However, the winger failed to impress and was hauled off at half-time.

Potter has since confirmed Mudryk had been suffering from a cold, which goes some way to explaining why he was so poor, as he registered fewer touches than Bernd Leno (£4.5m) in the first half.

“He’s had a heavy cold all week. We thought 60 would be his maximum but he felt heavy-legged at half time. We’re still building him up in terms of his minutes because of the break he has had in his season so we thought 45 was about right for him.” – Graham Potter on Mykhailo Mudryk

Despite introducing Noni Madueke (£5.5m), Sterling and David Datro Fofana (£5.0m) from the bench, Chelsea failed to score and managed just two shots on target all game. That means they have found the net just seven times in their past 12 league games.

Kai Havertz (£7.8m) twice fired wide in the first half and hit the post when he lifted it over Leno, but the return of Joao Felix (£7.5m) can’t come soon enough, who served the final match of his suspension against Fulham.

“I feel we didn’t do enough in terms of our attacking play to create more, which is something we need to do. I think we saw a team against us who defend very well, are very organised and that bit of connection, that bit of fluidity, that bit of understanding that you need, we probably lacked a little bit which is understandable when you consider we have players coming back from injury and new players in the team. That’s just where we’re at, at the moment.” – Graham Potter

FULHAM’S DEFENCE

It’s four goals conceded from seven league games since the World Cup for Fulham, a run that has seen them keep three clean sheets, despite facing Chelsea twice, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.

From Gameweek 17 onwards, their rate of 68.6 minutes per xGC is 10th best in the division, a real improvement from their pre-World Cup showings.

Their attack, however, has suffered as a consequence. After today’s blank, they have now failed to score in each of their past three games against Chelsea, Spurs and Newcastle, although Marco Silva doesn’t sound too concerned, putting it down to their tough run of fixtures.

“It’s not a concern. We’re an offensive team but we have to understand the teams we played against – twice against Chelsea, probably the best defence in the league in Newcastle, against Tottenham, whose defensive organisation is really strong. I’m not really worried about the situation. We’ll keep providing chances for our players and we will score.” – Marco Silva on Fulham’s recent lack of goals

So frustrating as a none owner.

In this period can't justify a -4 for him surely, but then it is very tempting.

Have to just pray Chelsea concede some!

I'm an owner but I still don't feel confident about him each week, they concede a fair few chances in most games and I suspect with Potter trying to fit in all the new signings (and particularly an attack-minded central midfield) they may end up focusing on attacking exploits rather than defence

A very boring couple of weeks with content creators more or less saying the same stuff. If's buts and maybes about DGW's and BGW's looking too far ahead.
Always have 2 transfers available, wait until the last minute to transfer, be careful with GW25, using the TC chip, must have ideal 9 players from Arsenal, Citeh and ManU.
More of the same this GW I fear with who to hold in GW25, keep 3 Arsenal, which Citeh defender, Almiron must go etc etc.

What did I do? Put DDG in my team earl (GW20) stopping the Bruno obvious pick and left Kepa on the bench. Went for some fun with Mudryk and RJames. Oh well; its only a game.

You should always have 2FT available every deadline before the GW. Very important.

      1. Eze Really?

        3 years, 5 months ago

I know. It has been said enough times (smile)
I think the fun has dissipated from the game with Arsenal and ManU assets too cheap, the Haaland perma cap, Chelsea, Spurs and Pool underperforming, the changing of the guard at Citeh, The likes of Maddison, Bowen, who were performing for "lesser teams" has all added to the predictability of picks. I forgot about Trippier who adds to the boredom.
Let us hope there are more interesting picks on the horizon. (I am personally going all in on Chelsea for the fun of it and Buxxer the consequences.)

Alex Moreno, James and Mudryk when fully fit, Pedro Porro, Mitoma + March, Bamford + Gnonto, Toney while others keep expecting a ban, Grealish + Ake

Heck, Bruno is only owned by 15%. Mahrez and Zinch are around 8%

Ignore the EO noise and pick who you think will score the most points, from captains to starting XIs

Let your fun come from making logical moves, having high scores and rising in rank over time, rather than livefpl or weekly OR shifts

Seriously ZE I try to do that. I have Mudryk and Rjames already, trying to think ahead. Sorry, but probably my state of mind atm.

Understood. Maybe take a break from FFS and FPL content for a day or two

People tend to talk more about their own successes than failures while mocking the failures of others and ignoring other people's successes, so you'll likely see lots of Kepa celebrations and "MUDryk" comments. Safest to just step away until you're sure you feel better

For you to have been bored enough to make these moves, you must have a good squad anyway. You'll be back stronger and smarter

              Good luck 🙂

No he wasn't, although Ronaldo was out the door so the chances were he'd improve... but I did get Mahrez in GW17 so swings and roundabouts I guess.

If you go with Mudryk (unproven in the Prem) and James (injury prone and just coming back from injury) it seems you are happy to take risks and stray from the creator consensus.

I’m not sure what your point is here? Their advice is the safe way to play and you’ve chosen your own path. If it doesn’t work out that’s on you especially as you seem to be aware of the risks.

Sorry bud but I think you miss my point. Not complaining about anyone and if you read my posts I knew what I was doing. My point was limited content creation is not the fault of content creators it is the limited choices due to a variety of factors. Cheap Arsenal and ManU players, Haaland perma cap. Etc Etc The lack of choices really.

    Morning folks,

hate early transfers but already used my FT last night as I had exact funds for my planned moves, having second doubts now. got 3.3m itb

    Kepa
White Trippier Shaw -- Doc Patterson
    Kdb Rash Martenelli Odegaard Andreas
    Haaland Kane -- Gnonto

A: Andreas >> Mahrez (-4) as planned. exact funds but mahrez will likely have to make way in gw25 due to CL and for me to afford doc > James

B: Doc >> Ake (-4) but leaves 3m itb and not sure where to use that. Play 442 or perhaps Andreas > Mudryk maybe in gw24

C: Stick as is with only 2 city players

So you rushed through moves because "exact funds" but you're also planning a hit which leaves 3m itb which you don't know what to do with? Mirror Man! The UN is in need of aid!

      C

City players playing 2 games in a DGW is very rare, you could end up essentially taking a hit for a SGW player. The Arsenal fixture doesn't look great for CS chances either, so you're really hoping that your City defender plays in the Villa game and gets a CS.

I see no point getting in Mahrez for a hit then only to transfer him out again.

Graham Potter asked if 60 minutes was the plan for Reece James on injury return: "Yeah, it was. That was probably the most [he could have played], as well. Obviously, we’re careful of him – we need to build him up. Similar with Raheem [Sterling], similar with Ben Chilwell. They [Reece, Chilwell, Sterling] are at the very first stages of their integration [into the team]. It’s not easy to do that in the Premier League but that’s where we’re at. It’s good that those guys [Reece, Chilwell, Sterling] got time on the pitch."

In a draft league and need to replace Cancelo.

Which of the following do you prefer?

    A) Robertson
    B) Ake/Akanji
    C) Estupinan

    1. Ze_Austin

      Not Robbo

Ake has more upside than Akanji

Estupinan is the safest, but I think Ake might be the highest-scoring of those 4 between now and GW27. Should have been Estupinan, but it's hard to trust Brighton's defence under De Zerbi

Overthinking the Kepa decision after the break has really cost me! Went with De Gea based on sure starts and looked better defensively, also meaning I went James over Shaw (more attacking potential) another terrible decision or just stung by variance.

EtH has improved United, with Weghorst, more than Potter has improved Chelsea with roughly £700m worth of transfers. Just wanted to point that out.

He’s running stats are great. I think he is there as a stop gap.

I’m not sure how you can disagree with this argument. The difference in results for Potter and ETH is tangible. Albeit we should probably judge Potter later in his tenure to be fair.

Except that Carew was pretty fast, none which can be said of Weghy.
Carew could terrorize a whole defence with his strength power and pace, and was not that good as a combination player. Weghorst is a brickwall the other around him can use, and is a technically gifted player. If anything a refined version of Crouch.

Played vs a high Liverpool line with a lot to begged for in terms of intensity in press.
Difficult to judge, yes. But to me, reminded me of a certain German striker just recently left the team. Something between that and Sterling is my impression, which for me is synonymous with good quality.

    A. Bruno to KDB and roll 2nd ft
    B. Martinelli and Mitrovic to Mahrez and Nketiah

Its the pricing in general that's causing this. Would have to been hard to overloook such a strong 4.5m mid otherwise, but when you can make a great team for under 100m we don't really need bench fodder

In a "normal" season, he'd be an excellent first sub but the downfall of a host of premiums coupled with the rise of a multitude of high scoring bargains has made him Persona Non Essential.

The old 'steal' word, reminds me of:

      @BigManBakar
      Darwin Nunez

GW 1-16 league rank (Stats per 90)

      Shots: 1st
      Shots in the box: 1st
      Big chances: 2nd
      xG/xGi: 2nd

Those numbers are mental. The only player who comes remotely close is Haaland!

Nunez should be locked into every team, especially with Jota/Diaz out. Steal at £9.0m

Surprising how Bruno only gets one price change in the end from going from 0.5m to 1.6m owners (and in the top 10k 8% ownership to 57%) - mysteries of the FPL price system!

The system is that they write all the players names, on the wall, blindfold the office intern, sit him in a chair and spin him round and have him throw darts. Blue dart hit = price rise, red dart = price drop

It’s because as gigantic portion of those getting him got him on Friday afternoon, meaning he couldn’t rise.

It’s a known fact, the game is rigged, price changes, baps, assists etc but I would rather have Bruno’s points than price rise at this stage.

If he does something today he probably gets another. People think they get him for the first Leeds game if they buy

I’d get Saka in that situation I think

I think Saka better long term, but Nketiah cheaper and doesn't take up a midfield spot, but Jesus will be back at some point.

Might depend on your team and structure, plus any plans for WC.

Both great value. I guess it depends on who you're going to transfer out.

Looking ahead to next week. What would you do? Bruno to Mahrez?

    2ft / 2.9 ITB

    Ward, Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Bueno, Shaw, Schar
    Martinelli, Bruno, KdB, Odegaard, Rashford
    Mitro, Haaland, Greenwood

Not sure yet. Plan is Bruno to Mahrez but if Bruno bags then I won’t.

So Kepa has pushed me to grey arrows the last three weeks with Ederson is my GK.

Team seem ok for DGW33 with Ederson KDB Haaland for MCI.

Thinking about Ederson > Kepa, Bruno > Mahrez, is it worth it? 2FT is so precious to navigate BGW25.

      Nah, not for DGW 33.

Currently got the luxury of decent assets for next GW, so I'll be rolling my FT in prep for GW25.

For next week, who would you bench and why?

    Kepa - Ederson
    Trippier - Shaw - White - Botman - James
    Fernandes - Mahrez - Rashford - Odegaard - Mitoma
    Haaland - Nketiah - Kane

Definitely agree there. I don't fancy risking the 59th min subs.

You can start by selling James tbh. He will get injured again imo & leave owners in agony

Haha, nope just the squad as it's evolved. Never had a chance to transfer out James so he's just rode that one out.

Well I do not know how you’ve gotten that team via evolution. Darwin isn’t fit to clean your boots sir. That’s basically my wild card plus a second premium keeper.

Which MID are you benching for GW25? Not suggesting you force a change at all - just wondered.

I think I'll be saving Rashford, Trippier and Shaw on the bench - due to value tied up in them.

Used it in GW17, combined it with the free transfers after the WC.
