Chip Strategy

It’s that time of the season again when Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers start to ponder various chip strategies, including the best time to Wildcard.

The answer, of course, is partly team dependent.

In fact, over 11% of managers inside the top 10k had already used the chip before Gameweek 22.

However, for the rest of us, some Wildcard windows do appear more appealing than others, which we’ll explore below.

GAMEWEEK 29

This should be a big Double Gameweek and one of the better opportunities to Wildcard or Free Hit.

It’s also worth noting an international break precedes Gameweek 29, allowing additional time to tinker and react to any injuries, which is always welcome.

Mikkel Tokvam’s excellent Transfer Algorithm had a go at predicting which teams could Double and Blank earlier this week (it was produced prior to Tuesday’s Double Gameweek 25 announcement), which you can see below.

If a team has a score of 2.00, it’s a guaranteed Double for that club, while a lower figure – like the one we see for Manchester City in Gameweek 28 – suggests there is a high chance of a Blank.

These are, of course, only predictions, but can prove very useful for planning purposes.

As you can see, a lot of teams can potentially Double in Gameweek 29; the only two who can’t are Arsenal and Everton.

However, things get complicated when we consider that some of those sides will also blank in Gameweek 28 due to clashes with the FA Cup quarter-finals.

At present, there are only four confirmed games scheduled to take place in Blank Gameweek 28, so dead-ending your team into this round of fixtures, then freshening up your squad the following week with a squad packed full of ‘doublers’ is appealing.

We’ll only know the full extent of Blank Gameweek 28 after Gameweek 25, when the FA Cup fifth round has taken place, but here’s a quick recap of where we currently stand.

GW28 Premier League fixtureStatusA blank will happen if the following occurs:
Arsenal v Crystal PalaceOn
Aston Villa v BournemouthOn
Brentford v LeicesterPossible blankIf Leicester beat Blackburn in the FA Cup fifth round
Brighton v Man UtdPossible blankIf Brighton beat Stoke in the FA Cup fifth round and/or if Man Utd beat West Ham in the FA Cup fifth round
Chelsea v EvertonOn
Liverpool v FulhamPossible blankIf Fulham beat Leeds in the FA Cup fifth round
Man City v West HamPossible blankIf Man City beat Bristol City in the FA Cup fifth round and/or if West Ham beat Man Utd in the FA Cup fifth round
Nott’m Forest v NewcastleOn
Southampton v SpursPossible blankIf Southampton beat Grimsby in the FA Cup fifth round and/or if Spurs beat Sheff Utd in the FA Cup fifth round
Wolves v LeedsPossible blankIf Leeds beat Fulham/Sunderland in the FA Cup fifth round

The main issue with this strategy is that you’ll not be able to use another chip in Gameweek 29. Now, this isn’t necessarily a problem, but if you still have your Bench Boost, you probably won’t want to use it until Double Gameweeek 34 or 37. As a result, it’s likely you’ll have a bigger squad, with more money left on your bench each week.

If using your Wildcard ahead of Gameweek 29, Free Hitting in Blank Gameweek 32 – which coincides with the FA Cup semi-finals – could form a nice chip strategy.

GAMEWEEK 33

Cancelo to Ake or Akanji if you fancy a DGW full house, or roll the FT.

Want to do Martinelli to Saka as I believe it will pay off very soon. Only way to fund it is to sell Bruno to Mahrez for a hit.

Yeah I'm doing Martinelli for Saka this week for a hit but doing Bruno to Mitoma to be able to fund it as I already have triple City with Haaland, KDB and Lewis. I think the priority is having the right triple Arsenal this week with their doubles ahead and playing through the blank gameweeks.

Will probably need to take a hit at some point by gw25 so may as well do it now and set the Arsenal players I want in my team. Will have a full XI for gw25 with Rash, Trips and Mitoma on the bench with no further hits planned.

Martinelli is gonna burn so many over this double. 100% guaranteed to haul in at least one of the doubles. Seems crazy to be wasting a transfer ditching him. Massively sideways if for another Arsenal mid aswell..

I don't think he is going to start 3 games in 7 days when they have trossard.. May miss villa in 24.

Odegaard Saka and Nketiah all better options, have better form and will have more minutes than Martinelli over the next 5-6 gameweeks. Maybe Nketiah might not if Jesus returns from injury soon, but the other 2 I feel will comfortably outscore Martinelli.

May as well set the ideal Arsenal triple up now before dgw23

Me personally I'm going with Odegaard Saka and White but think Nketiah is a better option than Martinelli at the moment.

Triple attack for any team is too bold for me

If it wasn't for trossard I would be keeping martinelli for sure ...but signs there now he's sharing minutes with troassard plus can with 2 DGWs in next 5 I can see trossard starting possible 2 GWs

I'm a big Martinelli fan but I have made the switch (on WC). When Jesus is back I expect he'll flourish again but for now he's not in the top 3 Arsenal for me.

You could have put a bit more reasoning into this than "100% guaranteed spite haul" - I find this defeatist attitude quite annoying tbh.

Meanwhile the other two are outperforming him AND are more secured of minutes.

Transferring him out is a very reasonable thing to do with Trossard there.

Otherwise Id probably would have kept him...

I'm not sure I really trust Villa/Everton defenders as much more than blank fillers or 4th/5th defender options. Actually feel more confident in City defence than I have for a while now. But I think there's plenty of ways to avoid them, with something like: NEW ARS CHE (EVE AVL)

This doesn't work very well because of Arsenal.

Arsenal are guaranteed to only have a SGW in 29. So what do you do? You WC with 3 Arsenal in 27 anyway and have 3 SGWs in 29 on your BB?

You're also at the whims of the international break ruining your setup BB from GW27. That's 3 weeks from when you WC until you BB.

It just never works out as well as you'd like. If you want to maximize BB you WC in 33, BB in 34.

        1. MYNAMEISBigtopmark.sman

You make valid points and I may change my mind but at this stage I prefer an earlier wildcard over the timing you propose. I worry about the bboost becoming less effective the deeper we go. Rotation will only get more prominent as the season progresses. To answer your Arsenal question. I won't have any in my wildcard. I will get them back post benchboost via transfers but more focused on differentials anyway to catch up rank. Sitting 1.5 million. Time to go against the grain

This say u can reduce from triple Arsenal in 29 for more doublers and then remove some Arsenal players in 33 because they face City, Chelsea, Newcastle, Brighton and won't double in 34 either.

Gabriel Jesus' first day back at Arsenal's London Colney training centre was on Tuesday, with the 25-year-old now following a carefully mapped out fitness plan alongside the club's medical team with the aim of returning to action at some point next month. [Goal]

The only wildcard situation is of course unclear.

We dont know who will double in GW29, we may already own most of the players you want (just use FT) or it may be that the double suits players we don't want to own (use FH).

My personal thinking is GW25 is very easy to navigate and GW28 blank is pretty easy to navigate.

May as well plan for those between now and GW25, then when we have fixture news in GW25 you can make your mind up whether you dead end and where you will use the WC.

The benchboost motivates me for early wildcard far more than navigating blanks. Gw 25 is easy with my team. I think 28 will be manageable but wildcard and bboost lose value the deeper we go. My starting point is bboost 29. The only way to do that is wildcard 27 and free hit 28

Don't fear the bench boost, embrace it

Worth a -8 to bring in Saka and Nketiah

Would be played over Fernandes and Botman if I made these moves

A bit surprised by the Dalot start. I thought AWB would be better defensively against Gnonto (assuming he starts)

Sabitzer makes his first start for Man United today.

Dalot, Weghorst and Garnacho also start.

    Tough one.

    Have White-Saliba-Martinelli-Walker-Haaland. 1 ft 3.2itb.

    Which one to do?
    a) Walker+Bruno to Ake+KDB for a hit.
    b) Just Bruno to KDB and hope Walker plays.
    c) White+Bruno+Almiron to Scar+Mahrez+Ode for -8.

    Thanks guys.

    The reason why Dalot starts.

Aaron Wan Bissaka is not in the match-day squad for Man United.
