Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“I can see clearly now the rain is gone. I can see all obstacles in my way. Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind. It’s gonna be a bright, bright sunshiny day”

The FA Cup results have brought a lot more clarity to what lies ahead, and the dark stormy cloud of the blanks in Gameweek 28 and 32 don’t seem that foreboding anymore, prompting many to bring a little sunshine into their lives with an early Wildcard.

While all the fixture chaos was becoming, well, less chaotic, there was actually a Double Gameweek going on, which started with disappointment and ended with a ‘meh’ as the multiple hits taken just about justified themselves.

The message going into the Double Gameweek had been straightforward: take hits, buy triple Liverpool and dump Harry Kane (£11.7m) – it looks as though many will be reversing these moves over the coming weeks.

We also had some new entrants into the FPL Hall of Shame: Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) cemented his place with a no-show followed by no goal, Eddie Nketiah (£6.8m) joined as his Double Gameweek turned into a double benching, and Gabriel Martinelli (£6.5m) trolled us all, apart from those with the appropriate level of foresight/luck to keep him, by returning to the team and bracing.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Star of the show this week was Magnus Carlsen, who has taken the path less trodden over the last few weeks with his captaincy calls and chip strategy: he played his second Wildcard back in Gameweek 20, and this week he scored 121 points.

The century was achieved without any hits and by disregarding Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Darwin Nunez, and as a result of which he halved his rank from 880,000 to 400,000. He captained Bukayo Saka (£8.5m) but also had Martinelli and a double Liverpool defence, thanks to his move for Allison (£5.4m).

The other centurion was Neale Rigg, who kept faith in Martinelli. Whilst his beloved Newcastle lost out in the League Cup final, it must be some solace that he has moved up the ranking by 840,000 places since Gameweek 21. Not sure about that transfer in of Ellis Simms (£4.5m), though.

TRANSFERS

It was the FPL version of Supermarket Sweep this week (only the old or the unemployed will get that reference), as The Great and The Good dashed around the aisles ready to spend their minus fours, minus eights and even, pause for dramatic effect, minus 12s to get hold of the doublers.

Fabio Borges, Ben Crellin and FPL General were amongst the most ostentatious with five transfers, as the Liverpool trio of Salah, Darwin and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) proved irresistible, but it was the last-minute orders at the tills which proved most decisive. Fabio’s purchase of Pablo Sarabia (£5.5m) was particularly impressive.

The wisdom of buying Everton players was brought into question as the results came in. Joe even went down the route of a double Toffees defence but despite that, he will be sweet on his ranking this week as is now up to 54,000 and sits comfortably in fourth amongst these managers.

The full list of transfers is below:

  • Az – Salah, Tarkowski (Patterson, De Bruyne)
  • LTFPL Andy – Darwin, McNeill, Alexander-Arnold (Ake, Mitrovic, Fernandes)
  • Ben Crellin – Darwin, Salah, Alexander-Arnold, Solanke, Pickford (Mitrovic, Fernandes, Ake, Ederson, Kane)
  • Fabio Borges – Darwin, Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Sarabia, Tarkowski (Shaw, Mitrovic, Fernandes, Cucurella, De Bruyne)
  • Finn Sollie – Darwin, Tarkowski, Salah (Mitrovic, Shaw, De Bruyne)
  • FPL Harry – Darwin, Salah, Alexander-Arnold, Tarkowski (Kane, Shaw, De Bruyne, Patterson)
  • Joe Lepper – Coleman, Tarkowski, Salah (Doherty, Patterson, De Bruyne)
  • Geoff Dance – Darwin, Robertson, Salah, Tarkowski (Lewis, Shaw, Kane, De Bruyne)
  • FPL General – Darwin, Alexander-Arnold, Salah, McNeill, Tarkowski (Kane, De Bruyne, Botman, Almiron, Patterson)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Gakpo, Allison (Rashford, De Gea)
  • Mark Sutherns – Johnson, Alexander-Arnold, Salah (Mitrovic, Shaw, Fernandes)
  • FPL Matthew – Saka, Salah, Alexander- Arnold (De Bruyne, White, Fernandes)
  • Neale Rigg – Simms, Darwin, Alexander-Arnold, Salah (Kane, Mitrovic, Shaw, Fernandes)
  • Pras – Darwin, Robertson, Salah (Mitrovic, Shaw, De Bruyne)
  • Suvansh – Robertson, Tarkowski, Salah (Perisic, De Bruyne, Digne)
  • Tom Freeman – Darwin, Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Iwobi (Mitrovic, Fernandes, De Bruyne, Shaw)
  • Tom Stephenson – Darwin, Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Iwobi (Mitrovic, Fernandes, Ake, De Bruyne)
  • Zophar – Darwin, Alexander-Arnold, Salah, Odegaard (Mitrovic, Fernandes, White, De Bruyne)

TEMPLATE

The template lurched again as Saka joins Erling Haaland (£12.2m) in the ‘essential’ list, with all of the featured managers now owning him. Elsewhere, we had the trio of Salah, Darwin and Trent entering the fold, along with Nketiah – but I’m not sure how long he will last.

The exits were also noticeable with Kane leaving in a huff and with a goal, Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) sold by many after one too many sicknotes, and FPL royalty Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m) dumped by all 13 managers who had him in their squads for Gameweek 24.

The full details for The Great and The Good are as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Kepa (13), Ward (12)

Tarkowski (14), Alexander-Arnold (13), Trippier (16), White (9), Bueno (5)

Saka (18), Salah (17), Rashford (14), Odegaard (12), Andreas (12)

Haaland (18), Darwin (13), Nketiah (7)

DOUBLE DIGITS

A look this week at those members of The Great and The Good who have managed to spot that haul (please note this is just up to Gameweek 24 due to my writing schedule):

The leader this season, FPL Harry, has built his empire through an impressive ability to identify the double-digit haul, with 54 of them so far this season – some three more than any other manager. He could also afford to bench three extra ones!

Finn Sollie has been less wasteful with his 51 double-digit returns and not one sat on his woodwork, but the same can’t be said for Fabio Borges, who has benched six of his hauls.

The table below gives us a view of which players have been the most explosive over the season. There will be no shock to see Haaland top with eight but it’s maybe a surprise to see Kane with four, as he has been steady rather than spectacular.

As before, this is just up to Gameweek 24, but either way, it’s surprising to see Saka nowhere near his Arsenal colleagues of Martinelli or Martin Odegaard (£7.0m). His brace this Gameweek was only his second double return of the season.

Finally, a little tip for those Wildcarding, spend a little more time on the Goalkeepers, amongst this list of players with 3 or more hauls, there are 5 shot stoppers compared to only 3 strikers and defenders.

CONCLUSION

So, the next 24 hours will be a blur of Wildcard activity as many decide to strike now with the complexities of the blanks seeming less complex and the Bench Boost in Gameweek 29 looking far more appealing.

I am sure the decision will split The Great and The Good, with the more cautious possibly hanging onto their all-mighty chip to make the gains later in the campaign. Whatever you do, I hope you have a bright, bright sunshiny FPL Gameweek. Apart from you, Andy North.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, but remember, don’t have FPL nightmares.

    Food for thought !!

Can navigate throught GW26 until GW 31(6 GW) with only 3 hits (-8):

DGW 27 -» 3 DGW (Dunk, Henry, Toney)
    BGW 28 -» Can field 11
DGW 29 -» 12 DGW -» BB on Ward* Halland Saka Odeggard (or another -4 up to -12 in order to get B.Fernandes for Ode)
DGW 31 -» 6 DGW ( Trippier, Shar, Almiron, Dunk, Estupinan, Mitoma)

    -» FH BGW 32
    -» WC 33 or 34 to set up until DGW37 and SGW38.

Is it worth saving those chips? Thoughts are considered.

Yeah, it's a case of do you struggle a little bit now and surge later versus surging now and potentially struggling a bit later. I think if your current team is set up to be able to do ok in 27/28/29 it may be worth the risk in going against the vocal majority and dead-ending to 32 and WCing in 33.

It's team dependent, but WC in GW26 should give you an edge in GW26; allow you to properly attack DGW27; and give you a better squad, and 2FTs, to navigate BGW28 and optimise the BB in DGW29. You'll be covered either way if there's a double in GW31; and BGW32 is far more manageable than we thought it might be, so there's still a FH to play with. Naturally, those saving their wildcard will be better placed to fill their boots in DGW34 and 37, but they'll be playing catch-up, and who knows what the rotations risks will be by then.

Dont think the extra Brighton slot on GW26 will make such a diference.

My team to GW26 as it stands.

        Kepa (Ward
        TAA Trippier Dunk** Henry**
        Salah Saka Odegaard Rashford (Andreas)
        Halland Toney (Watkins)

Any of this players can match Mitoma or March.

My DGW29 with 13 DGW + Halland and Saka seems fine either.

        Is that such an edge?

Yes, I would try to save WC if I was you. In my opinion your squad is just fine and with WC you would change maybe 4-5 players. It might be worth it but saving might be worth even more so I would risk.

26/27 Wildcarders, without FT, how many:

    a) doublers in 27 you have?
    b) how many you field in 28?
    c) what is your BB in 29 and which SGW players you will BB?

Thinking playing WC myself and weighting if it's worth it!

      My quick 1st draft has
      (a) 6 doubles
      (b) 10 or 11 players which will decide on nearer the time
      (c) on paper all doublers apart from for now Haaland, Saka, and possibly 1 or 2 other arsenal. Would say optimal DGW players otherwise.

Hoping no hits throughout, but if injuries or to bring in the latest form players, might take 1

Can you share this draft? I made a draft with 6 doubles 27 and 11 players in 28 but I didn't like it so much because it includes Sanchez in GK and I dont think he is the best choice.

        Also you're not having Kane?

I wasn't going to but following last night's results/injuries/benchings I think playing now and preparing for by far the largest DGW in 29 is the play. Currently have:

      a - 6
      b - 9
c - Saka, Haaland, Zinchenko, Kane Odegaard, but I'll sell Kane and one other for the DGW

      Already WC’d in 23, but:
      a) 4
      b) 11
      c) SGWers = Saka, Ode, Zinchenko, Kane, Haaland, but may move Haaland on for a 1 GW punt to get back in 30.

      A - 5 doublers in 27
      B - 11
      C - 13dgw with Saka and Kane

Will go without Haaland from 28-32 to avoid the City blanks and bring him back after

Need to start one, will have to do some hits at some point so could bite the bullet early.

    A) Mahrez (NEW)
    B) Nketiah (BOU)
    C) -4 in Watkins (CRY)

Wild carders! I prefer Raya and Estupinan (fitness permitting) to Sanchez and Mee/Henry, but the second option gives an extra BGW 28 player with three Brentford outfielders and Sanchez benched. What are people's thoughts?

Funny how the landscape can change so quickly in FPL. 2 weeks ago I was on the back of 8 sub 800k gameweek ranks in a row taking me from 2.4m to 100k. Everything rosey and perfectly happy with my squad. 2 gameweeks on, the run is over, 2 red arrows, this week being a substantial red, doubles and blanks announced and my team looks full of holes which is looking like necessitating a wildcard.

Depends if you need cash elsewhere (Eg: Cheap 2nd GK) but would have to involve Raya and/or Sanchez.

Changes you would make to this core?

Eventually considering Ode over Mart, Gabriel over Zin, maybe March over Mitoma, and ofc Est and Toney subject to availability.

    Raya/(Kepa?)
    Trip/Zin/Est/X/X
    Saka/Madd/Rash/Mart/Mitoma
    Haaland/Kane/Toney

    Haaland Havertz Watkins
    - TAA Trippier Andreas

Dont know how people are so comfortable getting rid of Shaw. Double digits potential in the next 2 games and could easily outscore BHA/BRE defs in GW27.

Next two including liverpool in anfield? We are poor but still wouldn't say it's a double digit potential for any player playing in anfield let alone a defender.

Don't mention benzema or vini s'il vous plait.

Thoughts on these transfers please (allows me to dead end in 31/2/3 and WC to attack the last few GWs).

    Kepa
    Trippier Gabriel Estu
    Rashford Martinelli Saka Mitoma
    Toney Haaland Kane

    Ward Shaw Bruno Botman

    GW27- Roll
    GW28 - Bruno & Haaland - Maddison & Iheanacho (10 players)
    GW29 - Martinelli - Bruno (BB - 12 doubles, Kane & 2x Ars)

Hokey Cokey but helps to cover blanks & doubles.

Before the latest FA cup results I was reluctant to WC, but now I am very tempted to avoid many hits and potentially FH from 26-29. My latest draft will potentially give me 11 DGW29 starters and singlers bench like this:

Raya (bha mun) Haaland (LIV) Saka (LEE) Zinchenko (LEE)

What a BB line up! 😛

So... Here's where I'm at. WC active thanks to Bueno's injury.

The main reason to WC is to sure up my GW28. Spurs having a game also makes this more appealing.

    Raya Areola
    Zinchenko Trippier Burn Estupinan Henry
    Saka Martinelli Rashford Mitoma Almiron
    Haaland Kane Toney

Almiron looks like a weird inclusion on WC but GW27 is a huge bench problem for the vast majority of teams and Almiron is an easy bench then while having nfo in 28.

Plan is roll FT27, Haaland > Watkins in 28.

And then I take 2 FTs into the international break and BB in 29. Transfers in 29 are probably going to be Zinchenko > Shaw and Almiron/Martinelli > Fernandes

    Haaland comes back in GW30.

how can a 3.9 wolves defender be the straw that broke the camels back?

Because he had a game in 28.

its just seems a bit alarmist because your down one player who wasn't exactly pulling up trees to begin with.

As you say he was a straw that broke the camel's back. It was a close decision anyway. That injury plus Spurs getting a game was the tipping point.

Looks good, I'm on WC as well. I'm tempted by Reece James. (I know.. I know don't go there)

Prefer Maddison to Almiron if he's fit.

Yeah Maddison is an option since he's a good player to bench in 27 as well.

      Maddison?

Is Areola nailed? Fab is just yellow flagged.

      Pretty similar team otherwise.

Fabianski is out for a while. Areola is there for the nice double in 29 for BB but otherwise just fodder I guess. I could go Kepa too.

      I like your plan.
Not into Areola and would definitey prefer Maddy over Almiron somehow. I’m also gonna be doing the same Haaland to Watkins move in 28 to get Haaland back in 30.

In a span of a week, I've gone from planning WC27-FH28-BB29 to thinking about the pros and cons of a WC26 just to arrive to the conclusion that I probably will not use any chips before DGW29 because of the FA Cup results. You gotta love FPL.

  30. waltzingmatildas

To save the WC, I would be doing something like:
    GW26 - Darwin to Toney
    GW27 - Ederson, Bueno to Raya, Estupinan (-4) = 4 doublers
GW28 - TAA, Salah to Schar, Maddison (-4) = 8 players (could add Haaland to Kane for another hit, 9 players)
    GW29 - Andreas to Bruno = 10 doublers + White, Odegaard, Nketiah

One issue with this is Nketiah so at some point, I could bite the bullet and another two hits to get rid and bring Saka in. However, this does allow me to get Maddison and Bruno where others might only be able to get one of those for 28/29.
FH28 is also another option if needed when I get there.

    What do you reckon?

My counter is what are you saving the WC for?

GW32 is now easier to navigate and you still have a FH available.

The only reason I could see to save WC is if you think the optimal team at some point moving away from Saka, Rashford, Haaland and into Salah, KdB, Foden, TAA.

Will this happen? I don't know, but I'd bet against it.
