Liverpool are among 12 teams who play twice in Double Gameweek 29 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

With their final blank of 2022/23 behind them and another double to come in Gameweek 34, the Reds are back on the FPL radar.

But is Gameweek 29 one round too early?

Jurgen Klopp’s side contest two away fixtures in the upcoming Gameweek – and they have won only three times on the road this season.

And they’re not just any old away matches in Gameweek 29, being as they are against Manchester City and Chelsea.

In this article, we delve into the numbers to see if their travel sickness is just an anomaly or a cause for concern.

“Concerned, yeah, I see it. I think with the home games we are top four, if I’m right. With the away games we are not even in Europe. There is always a reason for the situation you are in and our away record is for sure [one of them]. We could have had more points at home as well – or maybe should have. Away, definitely. It was a big strength of us in the last years, it made a real difference between, but that’s how it is when you are successful, when you do the things consistently in the right way, with the quality we have, we have a good chance to win away or get away results as well. This season not often enough. It’s a clear point, to be honest.” – Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s away form, speaking after 1-0 reverse to Bournemouth in Gameweek 27

Liverpool were winless on the road until Gameweek 15, while their only away victory of this calendar year came against 10-man Newcastle United in February.

Trips to lowly Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Everton have not only seen the Reds fail to win but also fail to score.

Even if they are victorious in all of their remaining fixtures on the road, they’ll still finish with their worst away points tally since 2015/16.

LIVERPOOL’S AWAY DEFENSIVE STATS: 2022/23 v PAST SEASONS

Above: Underlying numbers for Liverpool’s defence on the road in 2022/23. All figures are ‘per match’.

The big concern is at the back – and if you’ve watched Liverpool at any point this season, that won’t come as a shock.

Liverpool are rock-bottom for big chances conceded on their travels in 2022/23, while they rank 15th for xGC. In every department have they deteriorated from the previous seasons listed above, from plain old shots conceded to NPxGC.

Were it not for Alisson (£5.4m), the damage could have been even worse. The Brazilian shot-stopper has been responsible for preventing 3.1 xG in away fixtures this season:

Above: FPL goalkeepers sorted by expected goals prevented (xGP) in away matches this season.

Not that things have been much better at Anfield.

The Reds are ranked a poor joint-18th for big chances conceded in home fixtures, although their rate of xGC is the division’s sixth-best. In short: they may not be conceding tonnes of shots but the chances they do allow are high-quality in nature.

Is Saka and Kane to Salah and Havertz for additional -8 worth it or madness?

Saka just returned 18 points, and has a Leeds side leaking goals at home next

Kane is 2nd highest points scorer in game, and has a poor eve next...

Havertz is mediocre at best, Sarah two very tricky fixtures

You’ve got 4 single game week players starting over 3 doublers, which seems strange. Think I’d probably bench Kane and one of Haaland/Martinelli depending on injury news on former. I assume you mean you bench boosted in GW27 btw and not the blank last week?

        1. Tinfoil Deathstar
          • 5 Years

I’d find a way of staring Trippier and Watkins basically. Mee isn’t such an issue benching as don’t like their double.

Probably means benching Kane & Martinelli.

However I’m not confident Trippier out scores Martinelli with the double.

Will do Øde to Bruno with FT and play BB. Is a -4 for Zinchenko to Shaw worth it? I’d be left with exact funds to get Haaland back for Toney in GW30.

    Kepa
    Chilwell - Trippier - Estupinian - Botman
    March - Mitoma - Rashford
    Kane - Watkins - Toney

    Bench: Raya; Saka; Øde; Zinchenko

    A) Steele (will he continue to play until GW 34?)
    B) Kepa (good for this dgw, but not dgw 34)
    C) Alisson (2,DGWs, but Pool not at its best defence wise
    D) DDG (2 DGWs, but United not that solid defence lately)

How ‘essential’ do people feel Chilwell is?

I’ve got a plan but it can’t accommodate all 4 of Chilwell, Kane, Fernandes, Saka. Plan is for Chilwell to miss out.

If so have to hope Chelsea keep conceding as otherwise Chilwell is going to get a monster haul at some point soon.

Debating in my mind whether to get Toney out for a -4

Thinking to bring Solanke in, on a bench boost. This is purely on Toney being a risk for yellow, most people plan to upgrade him to Halaand anyway the following week. And if I ever get Solanke at least he has advantage of 2 x home games.

Would free up a lot of funds for me.

    Thoughts?

One more thing to consider. If you use it now, you can downgrade bench players to free up funds for premiums beginning in week 30. Otherwise, you will be holding quality players on your bench which ties up funds.

…and as luck would have it, I had Bench Boost on my mind, and so I completely botched the question. Very sorry.

More is better, but usually I set myself up for a win.
It’s why I prefer using the FH in a blank week when I’m in trouble, as there is no way my old team outscored my emergency one, so usually I’m 20+ up on the deal already.
I’ve never free hit in a double because of that.

Yeah, makes sense, it just fell this season that I could field 11 last week without hits and can do so in 32 as well. I feel more confident that better fixtures will equate to more points in a DGW than a SGW, but no doubt it still has the potential to spectacularly backfire!

Also depends on your rank gain expectations and the week in question.. Eg: FHing in 29 when a lot will be BBing, wont feel as good as doing it in a week where others aren’t using chips as much.

    Bench boost activated

    Raya
    Trippier Mee Chillwell Zinchenko
    Martinelli Saka Rashford Mitoma
    Watkins Kane

    Iversen Maddison Toney Estup

Was gonna get rid of martinelli and Zinchenko for -8 for Bruno and Shaw but unsure as they don’t play in 32 and Arsenal do?

Preferred the draft with Rashford and Mitoma on the bench. Got to maximise bench boost chip.

LoL agree. The bench probably should be Martinelli, Zinchenko, Mee. Then ask if any of those are worth a hit to change. Hard to suggest if it’s not known whether you’re FH 32.

The team did well under Stellini previously. Will be interesting to see how the end of the season goes for them. It surely seems Conte was pushing for this. A bit strange given they’re in a CL spot right now.

Spurs sack their manager before a cup final and sack the manager who could get them top 4.

Proof they accept losing and lack the ambition to win.

Think Spurs failure to win the #ePremierLeague final was the final straw tbh

I think Conte was right in his rant. As a player, you are playing the highest level soccer in the world (Premier League imo). You shouldn't need extra motivation to perform at your best, look at yourself in the mirror before the match, that should be all the motivation you need. As an owner, Spurs simply haven't spent enough money in recent years (rightly or wrongly) to keep up with the top teams. They have some good pieces in place but the dearth of silverware in recent times tells me that something somewhere is wrong. Spurs are going to need more than a new manager to compete in the future

Motivating the players is also partly the job of the manager, Conte never seemed like he wanted to be there, it felt like he thought he was doing them a favour by taking the job.

Get well soon Phil Foden. Swift action prevented Peritonitis which killed two of my best friends so well done to all concerned in getting Phil on the operation table quickly

Would you start Henry over anyone? No BB, used in 27, don't ask why I have Zaha.

    Steele
    Chilwell Trippier Botman
    Rashford Saha Martinelli Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Toney

    Raya Henry Zaha Zinchenko

Saha is Saka! I wish I had Saha too.

Don’t laugh at this question please….

Would you BB with Dawson or remove him for a hit for one of:
    Estupinan, Castagne or Emerson?

(Currently on removing for a hit for Estupinan as will be FH in 32)

That’s what I would do. Estupinan good going forward with many doubles.

I’m going aggressive and accepting a hit for 15 good players. Out of those 3, and depending on chip strategy, I’d probably go Estupinan, but I like the Leicester fixture if you don’t need him again

Thanks. And with Estupinan dgw in 34 too, seems best option.

Havent been looking on since the IB, seen there is DGW34 confirmed. Who to replace Tarkowski for this week? Estupinan still a good option? Will be bringing in Steele aswell.

On second thought, I'd rather have two mids and either Steele or a defender from BRI

already have Mitoma aswell. Would be bringing in Estup and Steele so thats a big chunk of players missing 32
