Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality”

Every FPL manager’s least favourite real-world manager Dean Smith was back but could do little to stop the fantasy landslide that is Erling Haaland (£12.2m), as the striking machine churned out another brace.

Leading up to the weekend, we also spent time in dictionary corner as defining “a small number of” caused way too much debate amongst the community as they had to decide whether to hold or sell Marcus Rashford (£7.1m).

Keeping with the game show theme, Pras beat the countdown clock and won the ‘fastest finger first’ round as he was first to proudly activate his Free Hit chip on FPL Twitter. All this and an appearance on Sky Sports with his Burning Questions pal Sonaldo – is that a call from Strictly Come Dancing I hear?

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Well, well, well. FPL Harry appears to have stolen Fabio Borges’ magic lamp as he continues his outstanding run with the highest score of 95 and the best rank of the season at 263rd.

The only blemish on his record is his continued bench wizardry, with Dominic Solanke (£5.5m) this week coming off the bench to replace groin-holding Rashford.

In other news, Joe Lepper narrowly missed out on a second successive grey arrow in a row with a small red one of just 129 places, whilst Ben Crellin had a Haaland-shaped hole in his squad, Andy soared to his eighth green arrow and Mark Sutherns drew level with Magnus Carlsen, who has apparently given up.

The Great and The Good: FPL transfers, rank, template + more 23

WILDCARD

Az played his Bench Boost – sorry, I mean Wildcard – as he overhauled his team but left 29 points on the sidelines.

His overhaul tripled up on Manchester City and Brighton and Hove Albion, along with a sprinkling of defensive differentials like Pedro Porro (£4.8m), Lewis Dunk (£4.7m) and Alex Moreno (£4.5m).

He looks well set for future doubles and has gone ‘threemium’ but he’ll be hoping that Harry Kane (£11.7m) shows a little more form in the coming weeks as Spurs have stuttered.

Here are his full moves:

IN – De Gea, Iversen, Ake, Porro, Moreno, Dunk, March, Martinelli, Grealish, Kane

OUT – Steele, Kepa, Botman, Chilwell, Henry, Zinchenko, MacAllister, Maddison, Rashford, Toney

TRANSFERS

At last, some variety amongst The Great and The Good as the majority looked to use up their transfers before a Gameweek 32 Free Hit.

We had the adventurous, as FPL Harry took a hit to bring in a pair of Reds, the unusual, as Michael Keane (£4.2m) was drafted in by Tom Freeman and the thrifty, as FPL General saved some pennies with Daniel Iversen (£3.8m).

The full list of transfers is below:

  • Az – Wildcard
  • LTFPL Andy – Ederson (Raya)
  • Ben Crellin – Alexander-Arnold (Chilwell)
  • Fabio Borges – Grealish (Maddison)
  • Finn Sollie – Ake (Chilwell)
  • FPL Harry – Salah, Alexander-Arnold (Maddison, Henry)
  • Joe Lepper – Grealish (Maddison)
  • Geoff Dance – Porro (Mee)
  • FPL General – Iversen (Kepa)
  • Magnus Carlsen – no transfer
  • Mark Sutherns – Haaland, Andreas, Salah (Kane, Rashford, Maddison)
  • FPL Matthew – Grealish (Maddison)
  • Neale Rigg – Grealish (Rashford)
  • Pras – Grealish (Barnes)
  • Suvansh – Grealish, Darwin (Maddison, Felix)
  • Tom Freeman – Keane (Henry)
  • Tom Stephenson – Dias (Chilwell)
  • Zophar – Grealish (Saka)

TEMPLATE

The template remains as unyielding as ever with only the switch of Jack Grealish (£7.2m) for penalty missing Bukayo Saka (£8.6m) being of note.

The full details for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Kepa (12), Raya (11)

Trippier (17), Shaw (13), Botman (13), Shaw (11), Chilwell (10)

Rashford (15), Fernandes (15), Mitoma (14), March (14), Grealish (8)

Watkins (18), Haaland (16), Kane (14)

CAPTAIN CALLS

A look now at the armband picks of The Great and The Good and an insight into how difficult it has been for those veering away from the auto-select Haaland captaincy.

The Norwegian goal-getter has been the armband of choice for 48% of the last 31 weeks, his nearest rival being Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) on a mere 24%.

There have been over 37 different armband selections this year, with some odd ones including Philippe Coutinho (£6.6m), Raheem Sterling (£9.7m), Andreas Pereira (£4.3m) and even Danny Ward (£3.9m)

I wonder whether we will see anyone roll the dice this weekend during the torrential downpour of Free Hits, or will everyone now just go with Mo?

CONCLUSION

The paint-by-numbers approach to FPL continues, as the Wildcards of Gameweek 26 now reach the Free Hit 32 stage of a grand plan.

Expect lots of drafts that look the same, containing triple Liverpool, triple Arsenal, Ollie Watkins and a slice of Crystal Palace at the core.

Perhaps the biggest gamble is taken by those who choose to be without the well-owned Kane and Kieran Trippier (£6.2m). Rank satisfaction will decide how dangerously a manager will play.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, but remember – don’t have FPL nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

Dunno mate, are you reasonably sure they keep a CS this weekend? Haven't Palace always been this side that defends well without keeping enough CS? (even since the Pulis days, lol!) Besides, Everton have been steady going forward (1.2 xG per game under Dyche) themselves. Going with more than one Palace defender is quite risky!

Haven't seen the clean sheet odds but they must be up there as having the best shot at one, with the exception of arsenal (triple attack) and Liverpool (TAA + double attack). Reckon Newcastle will concede so happy to bet against Trippier. Might take a punt.

Yh, agreed on the whole. The two teams with the best CS prospects imo (LIV and ARS) offer better value in attack.

A little unsure on the Newcastle concession part, reckon the game's going to be similar to their match against ManU. Big game, a charged-up crowd, a home team with wounded pride, a listless opponent that struggles to press and build against a high press - feel all the ingredients pointing towards a victory-to-nil for the Magpies. Interesting things to watch out for

Trent, Jonhstone, Guehi, Andersen? I quite like the strategy of picking a safe CS & backing it all the way on FH, but the only problem is the limited upside of these defenders in particular. I'd prefer to chase a CS + A + BPS haul from Moreno, even with a slightly lower CS %.

Yeah I tend to agree. The lack of upside is the concern with this approach. Still, I might go for it to do something a bit different

Very excited this weekend. FH feels really good and I only had three players playing so surely have to outscore that team.

Then loaded up on the double players with triple Brighton, city and man United already so fingers crossed I can close the season strong.

Floundering at 1.6m and any rank improvement will be taken gladly

        The question was which one.
They both look on form, but i'd choose Eze.
CP are playing freely without any worries so they have the potential to whip Everton.
I see WH Vs Bournemouth being tight and cagey, and both would be happy with 0-0

I wouldn't want either but rather would punt on Solanke against WHU than Eze against 3CDM Everton.

I took a 4 point hit and still will be able to field 10 players for the upcoming GW. Not sure if I should FH and avoid -8 in order to get 11 players. My team has Haaland, Mitoma, Estupinan who will be missing the GW. Any advise?

FH34 it is, so that means I need to make a transfer for GW32. Holding Rashers again, no point selling... but do I offload Dalot, James or Mitoma? I would imagine a defender. Have 0.5 ITB.

    Differential free hit, 6.7 ITB:

    Fabianski (Johnstone 0)

    TAA / Robertson / Cresswell / (Castagne 1) / (Moreno 3)

    Salah C / Odegaard VC / Martinelli / Maddison / Andreas

    Iheanacho / Ings / (Edouard 2)

    ---
Not tripple-ARS - Saints can defend wide players well (Saka, Jesus in posession) + their high PPDA is set to disrupt possession based Arteta. I think they can hold them to two goals scored by some central/inverted player. ARS defence sucks, SOU rue big chances... Don't want GK/DEF.

WHU because BOU defensive stats are terrible most of all from set pieces (Cresswell). I will buy either Antonio or Ings, depending on who is rested against Genk.

I trust in Liverpool most to keep a clean sheet + there is lower risk of rotation, so I pick double DEF + Salah.

Andreas - if he was 7.3 everyone would want him. Value disguise effect.

Maddison + Iheanacho for a punt. I might change my mind later on...

bench: I really want to start Castagne, but don't know for whom. Edouard - better than Eze this GW. EVE defend centrally with 3 players. Pick pure winger or their CF. I pick CF.

Moreno - he is just fun to watch. I don't expect much against BRE though. That's 1:1 random goals draw.

Some interesting ideas here. I'm still quite doubtful about the merits of triple WHU though. I know what you mean about Bournemouth's stats, but they do look a lot better recently. And the more troubling thing is WHU only scoring 8 goals away from home all season - 2nd worst in the league, even fewer than Everton, Wolves & Southampton

      1. Club-De-Belon
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 11 months ago

true, i did not consider WHU stats away... BOU improved in attack only, not in DEF... I think I will stay tempted by the Cresswell at least (set piece taker)

You’re not really going with this though right?
With Jesus. Watkins, Kane, Toney, Solanke, Jota on offer as strikers, you’ve gone for Ings and Nacho?

Each to their own, but this feels like over-thinking. A free hit is a differential in itself. Only needs 1-2 different picks within it IMO

      1. Club-De-Belon
        • 4 Years
        2 years, 11 months ago

I am going with most of this so far.
I will surely avoid Jesus and Watkins. I think I will most likely play 451 352, let's see... I am posting here to seeing which of these differential ideas makes least sense and so far it's probably ings/antonio up front.

Not sure on your Southampton analysis either. “saints defend wide players well”
Recent scorers against Saints include Perisic, Porro, Grealish……

          1. Club-De-Belon
            • 4 Years
            2 years, 11 months ago

            1. Porro's goal : in transition from low-block, with diagonal flat cross to other side, to inverted wingback who was on edge of the box, but was in central parts of the pitch... That is inverted wingback, nowhere near sideline or byline to spread the game. Free roaming guy in halfspaces is not a wide player. That's why I want Martinelli who plays similarly. That's why I avoid Saka, would be covered there IMO.

            2. Perisic's goal. He could not be more centrally placed. If you wanted to split the pitch in half, it would be in place he was standing in. It was a cut-back after a cross from wide player (wide guy to one out of 4 players pushing on SOU defence, cutting it back to Perisic for a long shot... That's why I want Odegaard. He + Xhaka are usually shooting from cutbacks and that's why they score goals this seasons... check TIFO, there is even a whole video by JJ Bull on cutbacks Arsenal uses... SOU doesn't defend rebound in MID, they defend wide and push on ball carrier...

            3. Grealish's goal - again, he scored on a break, with the famous diagonal pass to other side, where he was inverted like Porro. He wasn't playing wide at all, he made a run from the middle circle to the box, all in central area.

Starting wide doesn't mean you play wide. There are other roles than just Wingers. Saka is a winger though. Jesus starts central but drifts wide to winger role, usually pulling a defender with him... I prefer Martinelli + odegaard only and don't want more.

And mate, I am Saints fan, I know how we concede goals and where our vulnerabilities are.

Shame we are going down. I honestly think we have squad to fight for 10-14th place. New owner and the whole management just sucks in almost every aspect, except the fact they pay their debts on their own and don't pose them onto the club.

Not on a free hit and can get 11 out, tempted to save my FT - thoughts?

    Raya
    Trippier - Botman - TAA - Mee - Mings
    Saka - Salah (C)
    Watkins - Toney - Kane

    Bench - Kepa - Mahrez - March - Macalister

Only Martinelli and an extra Liverpool the real gaps compared to a FH, so yup would save it.

Cheers - yeah good shout, i think Martineli would be the only one I'd be keen to have this week, but would mean switching out a GW34 DGW player.

I don't think anyone can say he is nailed for the rest of the season. Likely first choice until maybe he makes a mistake with Ward waiting for another opportunity.

FH this week and already have White, Ode and Saka.

White will probably become Jesus but is Saka or Ode worth ditching for Martinelli?

Opinions are divided on this you either go with 3 attackers. Or 2 and defender from arsenal my choice is Mart over saka/ode and also go Jesus with White

Martinelli is the first Arsenal pick for me. Find it difficult to pick Saka or Ode over Martinelli with the way he is playing at the moment

Thoughts on this template-ish FH team?

    Johnstone
    TAA, Robertson, Trippier
    Salah (c), Saka, Martinelli, Eze
    Kane, Jesus (vc), Watkins

    Iversen, Moreno, Ramsey, Kilman

Looks good. Just that Trippier vs Kane thing. Covers their EO but feels like an opportunity missed on FH.
I’m currently doing without Kane and playing Trippier

          Johnstone
          TAA, Trippier, Moreno
          Saka, Martinelli, Salah, Eze
          Jesus, Jota, Watkins

I think Jota is perfect for a FH now that he's been picked ahead of Darwin twice in a row. Diaz will gradually start eating into his mins but its way too soon for him to start

Pretty set on these 7/11 players on FH32.

    Johnstone
    TAA Tripper
    Salah Martinelli
    Jesus Watkins

Like most folks, not sure on 343 or 352 setup. Options I'm considering:

    Def: Moreno, Robbo, White
MID: Gakpo, Saka, Eze, Ramsey, Andreas
    FWD: Solanke, Toney, Jota

For me I think 3rd Liverpool is where I'm uncertain. Front 3 could change about a bit and, if that means no certain starter between Jota and Nunez I'm probably on a 3-5-2 (poss Solanke 3rd striker but benched)

      1. Tonyawesome69
        • 7 Years

The 3rd def spot will become clear after I pick the 3rd Arsenal and Liverpool player. Currently leaning towards Gakpo and Saka meaning Moreno as the 3rd defender.

I do fancy Bournemouth to get a win, but not too sure about Solanke. From what I've seen of them, Billing is the one I'd go for but I'm not quite sure if he's going to make the cut for me. I'm done with underestimating Villa, and not too impressed with Brentford of late. So that leaves Jota as the standout forward for me - feels like an obvious gift to FHers.

All the mids have their merits - I'm still narrowing 4 to 2 from Saka, Ramsey, Willian (maybe Wilson if I get around to watching the Everton game), Billing

Slim pickings. I think 3 edges 2 this week, but would want 2 if it was a FT.

Eze will outscore an out of form Maddison and Bowen isn't as good prospect as people are making out.

A lot of these FH teams look like players you'd actually want to keep for a good few weeks. Eze, Moreno, Watkins, Salah, TAA, Jesus may end up being season keepers. (Considering the season is just 7 GWs now)

Need some help please. 2 FT’s 1.1 ITB. Need Haaland back next week and looking ahead to double 34. No chips left.
    Raya (Kepa)

    Tripp Trent Mee (Shaw Est)

Salah (C) Marti (Bruno Mitoma Mac)

    Toney Watkins Isak
Am thinking Bruno to Andreas as he plays n doubles 34 plus on pens I think? And Shaw to Robbo this week giving me 11.
    Week 33 Toney to Haaland
34 Marti to Rashford and Mee to anyone 4.8 or less to raise the cash for -4. Should mean 9 doubles plus Isak home to easy team.
    A. Yay
    B. Nay, but you got any better suggestions please?
    Cheers!

Nearly got Eze in last week but didn't want to bench Mitoma
    Would be

    Trent, Trips, Pinnock, Mitchell
    Saka, Salah, Mart, Eze
    Toney, Watkins

    Zin
