The FFS Pro Pundits 34

It is Free Hit season (for many) and, as always, there is only one place for me to start when I’m talking about this chip. The general predictability of FPL events is not very high so when you’re considering a period of just one match, that unpredictability goes even higher.

We had a great chat about it on our podcast and one of the best examples cited by our guest Alon from FML FPL was that everyone on a Gameweek 31 Free Hit would probably have backed Harry Kane (£11.7m) at home to Bournemouth. Scoring would be as sure a thing as they come but he blanked despite Tottenham Hotspur scoring twice.

I just wanted to hone in on the fact that a one-week event is fairly random so, outside of the Liverpool and Arsenal picks that are fairly obvious, there isn’t a huge difference in perceived quality between the others. Once you absorb enough information, back your own judgement of how you expect certain games to go. In a week like this, take the path of least regret and back your own instinct.

ALL-IN ON LIVERPOOL

FPL notes: Liverpool

One of the biggest dilemmas for Free Hit managers revolves around their third Liverpool spot. Everyone is likely on Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) and rightly so.

Nottingham Forest are one of the poorest travellers in the league, with only Bournemouth conceding more often on the road. Even watching them against Manchester United last weekend, I felt like a few more goals could easily have been conceded.

Which is why, despite the slight expected minutes (xMins) threat of a second Liverpool attacker, I personally feel like rolling the dice and chancing on one in hope of catching a big haul because, by putting yourself in a position to get lucky, this punt has a chance of spiking two or three returns.

If I was to predict which team is likely to score the most amount of goals this weekend, I’d put my money on Liverpool. Now where you go with that third Liverpool spot is very subjective and it comes down to what narrative you want to believe.

The security of Andrew Robertson (£6.8m) and the lack of good options in other defences is why people are going there but I can’t help but feel that Liverpool are capable of conceding a couple of good chances to their opposition in every game. I just think picking another attacker is a good roll of the dice.

A REACTION FROM ARSENAL

FPL review: Goals for Martinelli, Salah, Saka + Odegaard 4

It is the same with Arsenal who are probably the most reliable team for a clean sheet this weekend but it is very difficult to not triple-up on their attack, as we anticipate a reaction from them against Southampton – especially if they go 2-0 up again.

It eventually comes down to your decision of where are you happy to punt – in attack or defence? On paper, if you think about it, there are better punts in attack from the middling teams which then allows you to go for a Ben White (£5.0m) or a Gabriel Magalhaes (£5.3m) but I still am very tempted to go with three Arsenal attackers in my Free Hit team.

A good example of the debate most FPL managers are facing will be:

a) White, plus either James Maddison (£8.1m) or Eberechi Eze (£5.5m)
b) Bukayo Saka (£8.6m), plus either Timothy Castagne (£4.3m) or Tyrick Mitchell (£4.4m)

I will say that I feel more secure about Arsenal’s defence than I do with Liverpool’s, although the Gunners’ attackers do also offer a higher security of minutes.

OTHER FREE HIT NAMES

Which FPL players are on penalties and set pieces? 2

As for myself, I am playing a chasing game in FPL, sitting at 180k. Rolling the captaincy dice on anyone but Salah makes me very uncomfortable. Even if your armband goes elsewhere, please don’t go without the Egyptian in your team because it is just a risk too far for what is Liverpool’s best home game of the season.

For the outside punts, I still haven’t made up my mind but there are some names that I am flirting with. I am still interested in Leicester City but really hope Dean Smith mentions something about Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.9m) in his press conference. The difference between their attacking efficiency when he does and doesn’t play is significant.

The fact that Youri Tielemans (£6.1m) is fit again also has me interested in both Iheanacho and Maddison against Wolves, especially since it is Smith’s first home game. If we presume that they might continue with a three-man defence, their very attacking wing-backs could also be interesting.

Even someone like Harry Souttar (£4.5m) has got the potential to fluke a set-piece goal. He’s averaging almost one attempt per game at the moment.

Additionally, I’m strongly considering Crystal Palace assets, especially as this ‘sexier’ version of Everton under Sean Dyche sees the Toffees have an incredibly porous defence.

Another punt I want to talk about is Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m). He has real goal-scoring pedigree after bagging 29 returns last season and, for all the good that Bournemouth have done of late, they aren’t exactly a tight-knit defence.

By his own and his manager’s admittance, Bowen feels in a better place and I think a match where Bournemouth want to be on the front foot might suit West Ham United’s counter-attacking style.

“Jarrod in recent weeks has been the one providing assists for us. He made the goal last week against Fulham and he made the one in midweek at Gent too. He seems to be the one who’s making chances, what we’ve missed a bit is his goals, but today he gets on the end of one and finishes it, which is great.

“It’s what he wants to do and hopefully, if he can add another half-dozen goals between now and the end of the season, it would be great.” – David Moyes on Jarrod Bowen

“Since the World Cup, I feel I’ve been back to my best. People might say it’s not my best because I’m not scoring goals but my general play and assists have been there and I’ve always said goals will come, as long as I’m doing my bit for the team, whether that be sprinting and not letting the ball go in or slide tackling someone to block a shot, assisting or scoring, I’ll always do what I can for the team.

“I wasn’t happy with my performances before the World Cup when there was a lot riding on them, and now I feel free again. It’s about how I deal with those situations differently and I feel good since we’ve been back and today, to get the goal, I was over the moon.” – Jarrod Bowen

MY TEAM

FPL review: 2

I still haven’t made finalised my Free Hit line-up but, at this stage, Salah, Alexander-Arnold, another Liverpool attacker, Ollie Watkins (£7.7m) and three Arsenal assets seem like a lock.

I am also fairly comfortable playing Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) because I do fancy Newcastle United in that home meeting with Spurs, which is why I’ll be giving Kane a miss.

With regards to Arsenal, it’s worth noting that they have the first game on Friday so we might expect some early team news. If, for example, someone like Leandro Trossard (£6.7m) starts, you need to have a back-up plan in mind.

That is all from my side this week, I hope you enjoyed this article. We did a monster 90-minute podcast on The FPL Wire this week and it was great just talking football and match-ups instead of ‘planning’. You can view the episode below:

Porro Barnes Mahrez Haaland -> Trent, Ayew/Olise/Eze/Pereira, Salah, Solanke

    -8

Assuming Barnes won't play; if he plays, I will leave him and porro in and sell Gabriel for Trent instead.

Problem is that Wolves are no mugs. Easier to target poor teams e.g. Forest and Southampton. Bowen has more form and a easier game compared to Maddison imo.

This is true. Wolves are the form team whilst Leicester are in a tail spin. Honestly thing Leicester are going down.

    Trip - Trent - Robbo
    Saka - Eze - Martinelli - Salah
    Jesus - Watkins - Kane

      Decent

Would play Moreno over Trips especially if you're set on Kane. I'd also give serious consideration to Olise over Eze if you're looking for a differential - really it's only recency bias that has Eze as the semi template Palace mid.

But as a Palace fan and owner of both I might even play Andreas over both.

I'm curious as I don't watch every Palace game, is Olise the more consistent attacking threat? I picked him over Eze last week and was wondering if I'd made a terrible mistake or just got unlucky

        1. Moderately content penguin

Got unlucky in that he could easily have hauled or certainly returned.

The second Eze goal was a blinder that won't go in every week. Olise I'd have as the one to tick over - just. Eze certainly carries more direct goal threat typically but that equation may alter when Zaha is back - early season when Palace did look good Eze and Zaha combined well but with Eze mostly as a creator not finisher.

Very little imo to separate them.

    GREALISH QUESTION

    No chips left. 1FT. 0.1ITB
    Can only field 10:
    Raya
    Trippier TAA White Botman
    Salah (C) Buendia Saka (V)
    Isak Watkins

    Kepa, Estu, Mitoma, Grealish, Haaland

Feels like a waste of a FT (Grealish or Haaland > Matrinelli or Jesus) to inevitably bring them back in for the DGW34... unless of course, Grealish is not going to be as nailed on with Foden's return?

I find myself 7th overall, no idea really, but trying to prioritise long term position over just one gameweek. Thoughts?

Just realised, the money I will lose on selling Grealish will mean I won't be able to get him back... so it will be a firm commitment.

Thanks man, he does seem like the main man right now, but Pep can be as fickle as he is stubborn.

I think having the 2FT (+1FT on DGW34) will help me optimise my team for DGW34.

Wow great rank - Grealish has looked class and they are chasing for the title so I'd be surprised if he gets dropped but pep is pep - with 1ft I'd be tempted to do one of those transfers as I'd imagine majority will go with the same or already have martinelli

Thanks! Got lucky early on and stopped needing to take risks, maintaining lead is a lot easier than chasing... equally stressful though.

Yeah, Pep is so unpredictable and the points I will miss out on (Jesus/Marti) could hurt... but the 2FTs could help me shape my team well for the rest of the season.

'Luckily' I have another 24H to agonise over it

Thanks man. A few big early calls paid off for me, it's as much luck as it is thinking about it WAY too much. I knew I would reach this point a couple of weeks back and was sure in my mind I would hold... but the Arsenal triple really has me itchy... I think I will just trust the initial instinct.

Wow you're really OR7 (I checked)! That's awesome, good luck! I would probably keep Grealish rather than use 2 FTs on hokey cokey

Thanks man, I got a few things right early on and then just played it quite low risk after that. Defending a lead is definitely easier than chasing, but just as stressful.

I told myself weeks ago I would roll the transfer when I got here and endure the pain of fielding 10 men... my gut has gotten me this far, so I should back myself. Still, reading the majority of people writing I should hold is helping suppress that ARS triple up itch!

Longer term perhaps switch up Buendia and potentially Isak into Jesus.

If it's not about doubles then Eze and Ramsey are good considerations.

Both Manchester clubs regardless of cup results are in a run of 6 games (4 League) in 18 days so there's potential for benchings etc there.

Yeah, I picked up Buendia a few weeks back, no thrills really but has delivered returns in ~50% of the games I played him, so a decent short term budget option for me. I will need to drop him though (possibly for March as BHA have that extra fixture/s).

MUN and MCI's fixture density was not on my radar - thanks for that. I offloaded Shaw and Rashford, but I think I will bring Rashford back in soon.

I feel like it is too late for me to get on Jesus, great fixture this week but then no double and a tough run in. I am sure he will hurt me now though!

Was a stupid question from me tbf. I can understand why some people think Perisic could be a good choice but as a spurs fan watching him this season I would recommend people to never put him in

    Raya

    Robertson Trippier Botman Zinchenko*

    Salah Saka Martinelli

    Watkins Isaak (Haaland)

    Kepa dunk Mitoma Mac Allister

No FTs and I can’t afford to do Zinch to TAA. The Zinchenko news is a bummer. Should I free hit now? I need help please..

I’m a Liverpool fan and I really think Robertson is the sensible safer option for the 3rd Liverpool player. Nunez will probably come in for gakpo or jota and could throw a spanner in the works. Or even Diaz getting 20/30 mins. Jota/gakpo much more fun to pick but I’ll stick with Robertson I think 🙂 good luck everyone

I'd definitely go Johnstone and Robbo. Mitchell reminds me a bit of a AWB and very rarely gets attacking returns but very solid defensively

10 players playing for GW32 so no need to FH yet.

    I have De Gea and Steele in goal. Do I;
    1) Keep them both and go without a GK. Rotating for the rest of the season.
    2) Bring in Johnstone for a -4.

    B) Maddison and Bowen in 352 (double Liverpool defense)?

The concept of Maddison completely baffles me.

Zero form and playing for a team that looks lost against a side with a handy record and in form.

Final free hit choices basically coming down to Jota v Gakpo, and 343 v 352.

    Current draft:

    Johnstone
    Trip Trent White
    Salah Saka Martinelli Eze
    Kane Watkins Jota

    Iversen Andreas Moreno Toti

    2.9 itb

    A. Leave it. Gtg
    B. Andreas to Gakpo + Jota to any of Toney/Solanke/Isak etc (possibly for the bench anyway)

Am I the only one that thinks this might be Arsenal's only chance of winning the league for a long time? I've seen loads of Arsenal fans use the excuse of them having a young team but with Pep now comitting his future to City and Man U and Chelsea most likely on the rise, I think Arsenal have to win this year.

Thoughts on no Gabriel Jesus on a FH? They are playing Man City next and he's sure to get subbed off early.

    Johnstone
    TAA - VVD - Trippier
    Martinelli - Saka - Odegaard - Salah (c)
    Solanke - Kane - Watkins

Tempted by picking a player from the FUL v LEE Saturday morning kick off just to have some vested interest in the game. Leeds looked really bad in their last couple but none of the available Fulham players really stand out.

Any player from this game worth taking a punt on for my FH team?

For Fulham maybe Andreas or Willian, if you're really brave Sinisterra for Leeds

From a Leeds POV, RB is a huge problem at the moment - seems like they gave up on Kristensen, then Ayling was even worse, so now we're reluctantly back to Kristensen. Can't be good for the confidence of either. Firpo has always been a weak spot too, especially without Wober to cover at LCB. So either of the Fulham wingers look like good bets to me. Willian had a great game at Elland Road & a 10pt haul, racked up quite a few shots in the box v Everton, so I'm going with him (I haven't seen as much of Wilson tbh)

Willian the one if you want a punt. FFScout tweeted that in his last six matches, Willian has created 14 chances, only five FPL midfielders have managed more in that time

    Final decisions for FH squad:

    A) Kane + some cheap bench fodder (play 3-4-3)
    B) Maddison + Solanke first on bench (play 3-5-2)

    Rest of the squad is:

    Johnstone - Iversen
    TAA - VVD/Robertson - Gabriel - Guehi - Toti
    Salah - Saka - Martinelli - Eze - *****
    Watkins - Toney - *****

Personally I've been planning this for weeks. Currently have 9 doublers for 34 with 2 free transfers - so can easy get to 11, but will probably play Trippier anyway.
