Chip Strategy

A popular strategy this week will be to use the Free Hit chip, if you still have it remaining.

Thatโ€™s because Gameweek 34 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will be a double for six teams: Brighton and Hove Albion, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and West Ham United.

Indeed, over 17% of responders in our on-site poll are activating their Free Hit this week.

Here, we look at the potential benefits of thrusting the chip into action, whilst also presenting some drafts to consider.

GAMEWEEK 34: FIXTURES SORTED BY DIFFICULTY (โ€˜EASIESTโ€™ FIRST)

GAMEWEEK 34 FREE HIT: PROS + CONS

The main advantage of using it here is that you can potentially field 11 players who play twice, allowing you to collect a higher quantity of fixtures. However, whether Gameweek 34 is the โ€˜rightโ€™ moment to Free Hit will depend much on the make-up of your squad.

Thereโ€™s an obvious appeal to using it if you have barely any of the following players, all of whom are highly owned in the top 100k and theoretically playing twice.

PositionPlayerTeamTop 100k ownership
FWErling HaalandMan City97.49%
MFKaoru MitomaBrighton85.38%
MFMarcus RashfordMan Utd63.43%
DFPervis EstupinanBrighton58.91%
MFSolly MarchBrighton54.62%
MFJack GrealishMan City49.71%
MFMohamed SalahLiverpool48.32%
DFLuke ShawMan Utd44.91%
DFTrent Alexander-ArnoldLiverpool27.31%

So, if most of these players are unobtainable without multiple points hits, your reason for playing the Free Hit becomes even more justifiable.

Sprinkle in a few differentials that most other managers probably wonโ€™t have, and you could see a big rank rise. Taking a punt on Kevin De Bruyne (ยฃ12.1m) โ€“ providing he recovers from his โ€˜niggleโ€™, Riyad Mahrez (ยฃ7.3m), Diogo Jota (ยฃ8.8m), Cody Gakpo (ยฃ7.7m) or Andrew Robertson (ยฃ6.8m) are good examples in Gameweek 34.

On the flip side, if you already own five or six of the above players, including Erling Haaland (ยฃ12.3m) of course, there might not be enough โ€˜upsideโ€™ to Free Hit in Gameweek 34, given that most engaged managers will have similar squads.

If you do choose to hold onto the chip, you might want to consider Gameweek 37 as an alternative, the final double of the season with four teams (Brighton, Chelsea, Man City and Man Utd) playing twice, or even Gameweek 38, a round which has traditionally thrown up lots of goals in the past.

The line-ups could be more volatile by that point (for example, if City have the league title sewn up and have one eye on future cup final(s) or if United have secured a top-four spot), allowing for more punts on fringe players who are deemed likely to start.

As always, it depends entirely on each managerโ€™s unique squad, so have a look at your set-up and see what works for you.

Above: The Free Hit chip could alternatively be deployed in Gameweek 37 (left) or Gameweek 38 (right)

GAMEWEEK 34: POTENTIAL FREE HITS SQUADS

TEMPLATE

If youโ€™re playing your Free Hit and want to use it to protect rank, or maybe even hold onto a mini-league lead, youโ€™ll want to cover the highly owned players.

This draft, therefore, is a good starting point. It includes all nine players who play twice with over 25% ownership in the top 100k, along with Ederson (ยฃ5.4m) and Kieran Trippier (ยฃ6.2m). The latter is owned by a whopping 96.67%, so his inclusion guards against a haul.

Elsewhere, itโ€™s very much as expected, with Brighton, Man City and Man Utd triple-ups, plus two from Liverpool. In fact, our Scout Picks ‘bus team’ features seven of these names, which you can read more about here.

CHASERS

This strategy clearly comes with a huge amount of risk attached, choosing to go without a lot of consistent players capable of big scores. That said, if you are playing your Free Hit to aggressively try and make up ground on your rivals, you might be more willing to gamble.

This draft is made up entirely of low-owned players in the top 100k, bar Haaland and Kaoru Mitoma (ยฃ5.6m). Lateriser put forward the arguments for Antony (ยฃ7.3m) and Diogo Dalot (ยฃ4.7m), plus De Bruyne, in his latest column, which you can read here.

Elsewhere, youโ€™ve got Robertson, Gakpo and Jota over Trent Alexander-Arnold (ยฃ7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (ยฃ13.0m) at Liverpool, plus West Ham duo Lukasz Fabianski (ยฃ4.9m) – he should at least rack up the saves – and Jarrod Bowen (ยฃ8.0m), who has returned in four of his last five matches.

How important is Mitoma? Seeing the EO I'm kinda scared not having him!
Can transfer him for free but can't really decide on TAA vs Mitoma. Can get both as well for a hit but it means benching one of Estupinan/Trippier/Isak.

I have had only March from their attack, good and bad outcomes without Mitoma. If FH I would definitely pick him but I am not scared with Steele Estu March and just getting TAA in.

Will reassess before G36 but thats one tough double!

    -4 for Gabriel to

    A) Shaw - more fixtures

    B) TAA - better FPL asset

Trent for me. Not even sure if we'll get a CS from Shaw this week & at CB I'll be happy with anything above 4pts. Still starting him but not that enthusiastic about it. Trent could get anything & if they get a CS v FUL I could easily see it being 15+.

When you put it like that... not really much of a decision is it haha. I don't think I've owned Trent all season - would be weird to go a whole year without him.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on Man Utd, they did look a bit more solid than I expected in the cup game, but I'm not too optimistic about their double. I don't even have Rashford, gone all in on City (attack), BHA & Pool

Currently I have Watkins who will probably become Isak by GW36. Is it worth going to Jota between now and then or just save the transfer? If I save the transfer I’ll bench Watkins. If I get Jota then I’d need to bench one of Trippier or Estupinan, most likely the latter.

Just realized I have this interesting option...

    Chilwell + Trippier > TAA + Shaw -4

    Worth it?

Or stick to the plan of just Chilwell > Stones for free which gives me Stones + Trippier.

I'm tempted. I have to downgrade Trippier to afford TAA though and in my team it's the best way for me to find value. Newcastle play Arsenal in 35 which is no good anyway so I could roll in 35 and then buy back Newc defense in 36 if need be.

        KDB Salah Rashford Mitoma Pereira
        Haaland Isak Cunha

Any improvements? Exact cash so no further funds to play with. Only way to free any up would be to downgrade Schar to Botman/Burn

        Thanks

Looks good. I would definitely go for KDB & Salah like this. Did you plan to rotate Cunha & Pereira? Their good fixture seem to clash. Think you could just go for Greenwood to squeeze some cash for Andreas - March / Mac? (Not sure if that adds up).

Schar is fine for 36 if you definitely want double defence; personally I wouldn't mind keeping the 3rd Newcastle spot open for now to maybe take a cheeky punt on a mid (Almiron perhaps), especially given that Leeds fixture.

So basically I think you could squeeze funds from Cunha & Schar to upgrade Andreas. Think its fine to have 1-2 fodder spots on the bench at this point of the season (mine in 34 will be Iversen Trippier Toti Greenwood)

No BRI spot as I have Steele, Estupinan and Mitoma. I could let Estupinan go I guess to enable March. He was poor last night by all accounts and resale seems to have gone off the boil. That would need Greenwood too for Cunha. I just thought double NEW defence would be handy for their double in 36

Yeah Trippier & Schar, I think that's what the majority will do. I just fancy a punt on a more attacking option & the Andreas spot seems open for that. But Andreas has pretty good fixtures too. I haven't seen much of Wolves lately tbh.

                Rework

                Steele Iversen
                Burn Stones Dalot Lindelof TAA
                Salah KDB Mitoma Rash Marc
                Haaland Isak Greenwood

Would bench Iversen, Burn, Lindelof and Greenwood for 34. Gives me 10 doublers and only Isak with 1 fixture

Oh yeah, this one! I like Trent in there too. Can always find a way to Trippier in 36.

You’re a gentleman and a scholar. Thanks so much mate. Finally starting to feel human again. First time I’ve had Covid and I don’t want it again

Who was Buonanotte coming in for last night in the Brighton line up? Considering him for FH as budget is not stretching.

Is he likely to hold his place for 34? He looked good to me.
