Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead analyses the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Things that make you go meh”

Some weeks these updates are a joy to write, with events on the Fantasy pitch my mythical muse. In other weeks, well, they are less than inspiring.

To be fair, I didn’t expect much from this round of fixtures, with the general feeling that this was the aperitif before the stacked Gameweeks ahead.

The main excitement in the run-up to the Saturday kick-offs, delayed as some chap was putting a crown on it, was the return of the FPL flow chart, as managers prepared for Pep Roulette on super spin. In the end, even that was an anti-climax.

Events took a darker turn for FPL managers who held Solly March (£5.3m) as by the end of the fixtures, they had to suffer first his benching, then a ping of his hamstring before Alexis MacAllister (£5.5m) scored – it was not his owners’ best moment.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

In a low-scoring week, where only three of The Great and The Good beat the overall average of 39, Magnus Carlsen was the leading scorer with a “massive” 43, thanks in part to his decision to double up on Liverpool defensive players and pick the right combination of Brighton midfielders (i.e. not Solly March).

Mark Sutherns was not far behind on 42 due to his tricky tree Brennan Johnson (£5.5m) and in fact, all four of those managers at the murky end of the table hit green arrows. Maybe they are fearing the ignominy of the wooden spoon.

A tip of the cap to Fabio Borges, who at least dared to be different by putting the armband on Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) and reaped the benefits. Unfortunately, it was cancelled out by the minus returns from both Jason Steele (£4.0m) and Fabian Schar (£5.1m) who did little in their audition for the double ahead.

TRANSFERS

You know it’s a slow news week when one of the highlights is FPL Matthew making a goalkeeper trade, bringing in the much-maligned Ederson (£5.5m), the Welsh Wonder is clearly not fazed by the Brazilian’s rotation last time out.

Elsewhere, Az couldn’t wait to get rid of Diogo Jota (£8.8m) for the sought-after Alexander Isak (£7.0m), who will be one of the antagonists in the main debate this week as to whether to go with him or Callum Wilson (£7.1m) or even both.

The full list of transfers is below:

  • Az – Isak (Jota)
  • LTFPL Andy – No Transfers
  • Ben Crellin – No Transfers
  • Fabio Borges – No Transfers
  • Finn Sollie – No Transfers
  • FPL Harry – No Transfers
  • Joe Lepper – No Transfers
  • Geoff Dance – No Transfers
  • FPL General – No Transfers
  • Magnus Carlsen – Mitoma (Martinelli)
  • Mark Sutherns – No Transfers
  • FPL Matthew – Ederson (Raya)
  • Neale Rigg – No Transfers
  • Pras – No Transfers
  • Suvansh – No Transfers
  • Tom Freeman – No Transfers
  • Tom Stephenson – No Transfers
  • Zophar – No Transfers

TEMPLATE

As solid as a rock.

The full details for The Great and The Good are as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Kepa (12), Raya (9)

Trippier (17), Alexander-Arnold (16), Botman (13), Shaw (12), Estupinan (10)

Rashford (18), Salah (15), March (15), Mitoma (15), Fernandes (13)

Haaland (18), Watkins (14), Greenwood (9)

WHAT IF MACHINE

It’s that period of year when we look back at what might have been, so it’s as good as time as any to bring out the What If Machine. If you’re new to this feature, it calculates how many points you would have scored if you had done nothing with your team since Gameweek 1.

The award for the most improved manager is Az, who has gained 706 points over the season due to his meddling – but to be fair his opening squad did include double Liverpool defence, mega troll Lucas Digne (£4.5m), the much-fancied enabler Pedro Neto (£4.9m) and Mason Mount (£7.2m). Hindsight can be cruel.

Not far behind him are Ben Crellin and Finn Sollie, who have made good ground during the campaign. FPL Harry had the best opening squad and has only got better during the campaign whilst Magnus, well, he has given up.

CONCLUSION

Brace yourself for a bevy of doubles as we face up to the next two weeks, which will no doubt be strewn with rotation as the campaign comes to its conclusion. For those chasing, it’s a good time to throw caution to the wind.

I am sure many will look to the default Newcastle and Brighton moves but if you have a transfer to spare and fancy a flutter, it’s worth looking at those fighting for survival. Dwight McNeil (£5.1m) and Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m) impressed this weekend – sometimes motivation can be greater than fixtures.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, but remember: don’t have FPL nightmares.

    Better option over GW36+37?

    A) TAA(lei) or Shaw(WOL) + TAA (AVL)

    B) Mac A -4 points

Can bench March for the next two gameweeks instead of taking a hit for Mac A
Plan to use transfer in GW37 to get KDB or Alvarez

Four games Vs 2, but the 2 are tasty singles and the 4 are not so easy. Is B a hit because you've made a move this week or because it's 2 moves? I think B only wins if it comes with other changes that add value

So I have 0.0m in the bank will be doing Watkins to Wilson/Isak for sure which frees up the cash for Mac.

Makes sense. In which case I think I'd go A. B has scored well, but jammy goal and a penalty which he might not repeat and I don't think I'd bench Trent this week, or next

Yes kind of agree with that. Arsenal & Newcastle won’t be easy for Brighton and I highly doubt any of the Brighton players start all 5 games from 36-38.

Best non Brighton or Newcastle one week punt midfielder up to 8.2m?

    A) Zaha (BOU) - always turns up last few games of the season when transfer rumours pop up

    B) Foden/Mahrez (eve) - both explosive but who starts at right wing?

    C) Madueke (NFO) - in good form and an easy fixture playing against forest’s weaker side

    D) Odegaard/Martinelli/Saka (BHA) - in good form against a brighton who just conceded 5 to Everton

2 FT, 0 itb, FH remaining

    Ederson

    Estupian Trent Trippier
    Rashford Salah Bruno March* Mitoma
    Haaland Isak

    (Iversen Stones Robertson Greenwod)

    A: Robertson to Newcastle-defender, save 1ft,
B: Robertson to Newcastle-defender + March to Mc Allister.
    C: Something else???

On B for now, but this really gives a benching-headache.....

I've looked at the Newcastle midfield and there's value in there with the fixtures.

          But which one?

Hunch ... Willock then Murphy but Joelinton or Almiron could come good.

          Couldn't call it.

For what its worth as a newcastle fan and march owner I am considering going to willock as a cheap way into the Newcastle midfield. I expect him to get the most minutes out of the cheaper options and he seems to be getting some really good opportunities to score. I expect Murphy to start and be replaced by almiron as an impact sub but he could easily get rested instead, so seems a bigger risk to take imo.

Have 2 FTs, probably will skip the Wilson move.

Currently with same dilemma. Think i'll start KDB and if he doesn't play i'll have Estupinan to come in off the bench. Not expecting Brighton to keep any clean sheets.. Debating whether to get Steele or is he in danger of being dropped after Everton result. Culd have a lot of save points..

Hi - I feel it's quite sad that you answer so many questions from other users but few answer yours!!

In answer to your question Mahrez or Foden for me - for some reason I'd lean more towards Foden (probably as I've got him LOL)

Cheers Nigel. Can't quite stretch to Foden (unless maybe for -4 including Raya - Steele, but not sure about that).

I think the pattern of KDB's starts around UCL would suggest a benching is coming but they did struggle against Everton last time & they might need his creativity.

Might just be a timing thing as some of the regs have gone quiet now. Usually pretty happy with the support/replies I get.

I think after Everton's result at the weekend Pep will make changes but not as many as people expect. Even as a late sub I think he could still outscore Estupinan. Good luck whatever you decide

    3. Atimis

Not keen on Mac? Just asking as can't decide myself, could just go for Mahrez as well now

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

Considered it. Mac/Willock probably next best option. But in that case I would likely move them on for City mid next week, and not sure its worth one week punt on Mac with these fixtures. Other thing on my mind is that I have exactly 7.3 & Mahrez is + 73.1 on fplstats so could potentially lose that option next week

    4. Ask Yourself

Are we even sure Mahrez starts over Foden on the right? Or is he going to rest Grealish again and have Foden on the left? Too many questions right now for me to bring a city player in

    Ederson (Iversen)
    TAA Tripp Dalot Estup Zouma*
    Salah Rash Grealish March* Andreas*
    Haaland Jota Solanke

2 FT-s, FH and TC chip. Would u:

    a) FH gw36
    b) 2FT-s gw36 (Isak etc.)

    TC gw37 seems inevitable.

Also Brighton gw36 games are hard + their form is questionable, so triple-up and FH maybe risky? Thats the case why gw36 has FH vs 2FT-s dilemma when other players are solid in my team. What do you think?

    Iversen, Ferguson, Estupinan, Moreno

Got 1.4 ITB and 1 FT.

    A: Leave it
B: Alvarez -> Wilson (and reverse next week)
    C: KdB + Ferguson -> Mahrez + Wilson for minus 4
D: Something else which should be obvious

Alvarez will probably start after all City players playing the full 90 last night so my initial plan of going A seems a bit more risky.

I would hold onto to KDB for 37. B could work but if you look at the spacing of the fixtures there's a chance Isak starts both this GW with Wilson coming in for Leicester, which would be a bit tricky as you'd probably want to keep him in that case. Think I'd just roll here actually

      A

Alvarez is a good option at Everton and could easily cover KDB.

I guess Haaland will start or feature.

I'd have to take a hit to free up space for Mahrez (with KDB and Haaland who could sit out Everton along with Stones).

I know it's late on in the season but how about a punt on...

    Stones, March, Watkins to

    Kiwior, Mahrez, Wilson for -4?

Yeah, why not. One more -4 is ok considering the outgoing players

What are you plans regarding the Brighton players, mates?

I have Steele, Estupinan and Mitoma but will probably play only the last one in DGW36

Don't have Steele but would probably start him 36 & 37 at least. Estupinan 37 only. Mitoma every game

    2 fts ; 0.4 itb

Guys, what would be your moves here?

How about Kepa Watkins to De Gea Wilson/Isak?

    Steele

    Trippier Stones Estupinan
    Salah Rashford Grealish Mitoma

Jota Haaland Watkins

    Kepa Martinelli Shaw Henry

Personally I think it's too late to switch the keeper.

Kind of got to go with what you have now.

Stones may well be saved again but you've got Shaw so you're in good shape.

      Martenelli covers Grealish.

      How about Jota to Wilson?

2 FT. 0ITB. Thoughts on Stones & March > Estu & MacAllister? Would allow be to bring in KDB for Salah next GW.

    Pope (Alisson)
    TAA Trippier Shaw Stones (Dalot)
    Salah Grealish Rashford Mitoma (March)
    Haaland Isak, (4.1)

Would Alisson and March to Steele and Mac free enough funds to go from Grealish and Salah to KDB and Bruno GW37?

He might, but so might all the City-players - the same for next week, and the week after that... If you don't trust them, you should invest in other players instead of benching, I think

    3. The Mentaculus

      B. I could be wrong but I think Grealish will start after having had his rest last weekend

And even if he doesn't start, he could still feature. If not, Zinchenko first on the bench isn't too bad. You might even get lucky, that March is ready for GW37

If leading ML by 25-50 points and all chasers have double Newcastle defence would you play it safe and get botman over Wilson (team news depending)

    A) Wilson (feels highest ceiling but also risky considering the ML)

    B) Botman (covers all ML players)

I have no idea what to do. I was going to try get Isak in, but not sure it's worth the -4. Benching headache too

    Ederson

    TAA | Shaw | |Trippier | Botman

    Salah | Rashford | Mitoma | Mahrez

    Haaland | Wilson

Bench: Iverson | Estu | March Solanke

Worried Haaland gets a rest. What would you do with 1ft, take a -4 to switch up Botman to get Isak in for Solanke or just roll it?

A bit of a headache with the team this week, this is how I'm currently set up.
2 free transfers and no idea what to do!

    Ederson
    TAA Trippier Estupinan
    Salah Mitoma MacAllister Rashford Murphy
    Isa(k) Haaland

    DDG, Robertson, Dias, Martial
