Best £4.0m FPL defenders for 2023/24

It’s that time of the year again when we commence our exhaustive trawl through the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price list – and we begin with the best £4.0m defenders.

We start here for a reason.

While nothing has changed with the FPL rules, chips and scoring system, there’s been a bit of a shift in the pricing structure.

Usually, we’re scrabbling round for one or two £4.0m playing FPL defenders at best. A lot of the time, these budget gems – such as John Lundstram, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tino Livramento – only announce themselves during pre-season.

But this year, perhaps to counter price rises for the likes of Erling Haaland (£14.0m), the games-makers have made it much easier to find £4.0m options with strong chances of game-time.

BEST £4.0M DEFENDERS: THE PROMOTED TEAMS

All of the stand-out picks in the £4.0m bracket, at present, come from the three newly promoted clubs.

A quarter of the 56 defenders currently in FPL’s reduced-to-clear aisle ply their trade for Burnley, Luton Town or Sheffield United:

    Wonder what price Haaland would have to be to not be in 80% of squads? Or is it more about the prices of everyone else?

      When I saw him at 14 it did make me wonder how strong you could get without him, but then I saw how easy it was to get an excellent team with him in there so it's not a consideration anymore

      I think even at 15 or 16m he'd be in 90% of squads, but it would kill off Salah and anyone over 9m

      He'd be in everyone's squad no matter what, no other trustworthy premium's if Kane leaves

      16-17m this is a price when I would remotely consider to build a squad without him

      If they bumped all the midfielders 7m+ up by 1m then he wouldn't be in as many teams.

      Great imaginary prizes:

      1. Guaranteed knighthood
      2. Free jousting stick
      3. Prominent position at Round Table

        All are welcome to enter the Tourney! The tourney was originally the brainchild of one of the more popular Mods so I would be very surprised if you didn’t join! Tis certainly better than being forced to play Soare! Huzzah!

          OK, I'm in then.
          But I'm not quite sure whether it would be more shameful to finish first or last!
          Which will the imaginary prizes be awarded to?

            Just remember, if you are mediocre you are always at your best! Prize allocation rationale will be considered closer to the starting date of the tourney and depends upon how many millions join.

    When there are brilliant known options at £4.5m, and it's easy to get a good squad because it's so cheap does the £4m def actually matter?

    I'm considering going for 3x £4.5m which I will rotate, should be able to get a good home fixture every week.

      Depends how you set up your team. Either way, we should have varied teams apart from everyone having Haaland

      Just to name a few Botman / Pinnock / Tarkowski / Ream / Semedo / Cash / Cresswell (does he still start?)

      I'm torn between three 4.5s or 5.5 - 4.0 - 4.0. The latter leaves me flexible to potentially important players like Chilwell.

      It matters if you want to park him at the end of your bench and invest an extra 0.5 in your starting XI.
      Personally, I've heeded Neale's tip and am rotating Bell with Tarkowski (for today, anyway).

      1. TheTinman

        Maybe not phrased perfectly, I usually comment on here on the fly whilst walking the dog.

        The point is, it is so easy to find £0.5m, is it not better to have a deeper squad (mitigate the need to make a transfer if your £4.5m defender gets injured/banned etc.)

        You're not seriously going to rotate a Luton defender are you?

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          11 months, 5 days ago

          That's the plan. It's only about 3 times in the first half-season and I'll have wildcarded long before then. Currently he's due to play home to Burnley and Wolves and possibly away to Forest if I delay my WC. I mean, what's the worst that can happen?

        My opinion is that you always 'think' that you need that £0.5m down the line.

        Sometimes the better option is the cheaper option but we always turn our noses up at them

      Still relevant. I don't think I really need a 5-way rotation for 3 spots; 4 will do with a 4m on the end who doesn't need to start

      1. TheTinman
        • 8 Years
        11 months, 5 days ago

        I was more thinking £4.5m striker fodder who never plays (there's never value in that bracket)
        5x midfielders who you stick with / rotate via transfers
        Rotate the 3rd defender spot between 3x £4.5m

          I'll surely have one of those too, and 5 mids who start every week. Think just one 4.5 defender sub is fine for me personally since I'll probably WC earlyish (6-7)

            • 8 Years
            11 months, 5 days ago

            That is true. I played for the early WC last year for the first time and regretted it.

            Going to play to hold it this year like I always used to and see how I go!

              I did actually enjoy playing with a deep squad last season, and will probably setup with 2 playing subs after WC, which will likely also coincide with European competitions starting up. But there's so much new info on who the good budget options are after the first 5 GWs or so, so I'll reassess my 4.5 defenders and the likes of Enciso then

    I said it yesterday, but I don't think the variety of 4 mill options is JUST to enable people to have Haaland. The increased cheap options mean people have more choices and we have more varied benches rather than everyone having the same 4.0 mill Def and 4.5 mid. I personally like the look of two 4 mill Defs and a 5 mill mid for my bench

    1. TheTinman
      • 8 Years

      When everyone owns a £4m it can mess with the algorithm so they end up dropping price (despite never playing in anybody's team) and then they're £3.9m and you're stuck with them. It never typically matters, but it is annoying!

    After last season's heroics by the 4.5 midfielders this season's 4.5 offering seems like a post apocalyptic waste land.

    Feel it may be better to punt on a 5.0 and then move down when a good option emerges.

    1. TheTinman
      • 8 Years

      I think there's more value in £4.5m defenders.

      Would rather bring one of them in than a £4.5m Mid. So have your £4.5m as fodder and rotate in defenders when needed.

    2. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      11 months, 5 days ago

      I think a lot of people (maybe the majority) will go 5 across midfield with 6.5 being the cheapest. The cheap benchies will be defenders and forwards.

      I felt like Bruno was a bit unlucky on the eye test last year. Could have posted some big numbers.

      Rashford is very streaky, when he's running hot it's him.

      Maybe Bruno is the safer pick to start with?

      I'm leaning to Bruno, but most leaning to Rashers. What you thinking?

        Choose 4.5m forward that have no chance of playing because their price will not decrease due to no one owning them. If you are picking 4.5m forward don't pick Surridge or any player with high % of selection from other managers.

          Rob Edwards, The Gaffer: “Cauley has had a frustrating time since we came in. When we arrived he was just coming back from injury and worked extremely hard to get himself fit.

          “He may not have been starting matches, but he was coming on a lot as the first sub to be introduced and was always very important, whether we were winning or losing games.

          “I thought he was excellent when he started against Rotherham and Reading, but unfortunately he hurt himself again, and although he tried really hard to come back for the play-off semi-final, he then broke down again which ruled him out for the final.

          “Looking back, Cauley arguably scored the most important goal after we came in, which was against Norwich at home on Boxing Day. Down to ten men, we went for it and put him on and thankfully he did what we know he can do.

          “He scored a brilliant goal and I think that really got the whole thing going for us. A home win, the first for a while – it got a lot of belief going and helped create a connection between us and the supporters. It really helped us, so Cauley played a huge part in us building momentum.

          “He still chipped in with goals, but it was his all-round play, his work-rate, which again we know that we need, that’s what we are about.

          “He’s a local lad and he’s had a little bit of Premier League experience in the past with Fulham, so he’ll be desperate to try and get some more. He’ll be someone who will be very hungry now to come back, try and impress and show what he’s about.

          “He’s a brilliant human being as well. I love seeing him around the place, always smiling, always gives everything, so I’m really pleased that he’s agreed to extend his contract with us.”

          I like what I hear.

              Any minutes is ideal for a 4.5m striker. When WCs come around, people will bring in the 4.5m striker with the most points, and that will likely be Woodrow. 1pt is better than 0pts.

      This is Kane sucks in August all over again.

      He's one of the best attackers in the league playing for one of the best teams with really good opening fixtures. It's not that complicated.

            Mins per goal all comps:

            118 = Nelson (589 / 5)
            124 = Jesus (2347 / 19)
            155 = Nketiah (1859 / 12)
            187 = Saka (3744 / 20)
            200 = Odegaard (3404 / 17)
            215 = Martinelli (3440 / 16)

            Mins per goal PL:

            67 = Nelson (201 / 3)
            187 = Martinelli (2805 / 15)
            189 = Jesus (2075 / 11)
            210 = Odegaard (3150 / 15)
            228 = Saka (3194 / 14)
            267 = Nketiah (1069 / 4)

            Seems to bang them in as much as anyone else at Arsenal

      Without Trent I struggle to spend the money. While I don't think he's the best value player, I think he's involved in the best value combination of players.

        Kind of thought the same but, with a couple extra trimmings of 0.5, I'd rather turn one of my mid-priced mids into Salah & just start with a really cheap defence

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          11 months, 5 days ago

          By having my most expensive defender at 5m, there's so much more money to plough into midfield. And yeh, i know the 'Trent's as good as a midfielder' line, but 8m gets you a damn good midfielder this year.

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 12 Years
            11 months, 5 days ago

            The 8m mids are amazing, but Mbeumo at 6.5m is also amazing. And the 3 Arsenal player limit is really limiting. Personally not a fan of the Spurs guys, Son and Maddison.

            Also, and I know this won't be popular, but I think Sterling could be the best value player in the game. Obviously waiting for pre-season though of course...

            So the stacked options in midfield kind of adds a lot of value to the likes of Trent and Jesus, who have very little competition in their respective positions.

            1. Andy_Social
              • 11 Years

              I kinda see it the opposite. In addition to Mbeumo, my other mids as it stands are:
              Salah, Rashford, Saka and Foden.
              I can easily shift one of the 8.5-7.5 assets to the likes of Bruno, Ode, Marti, Havertz, Grealish, Son, Maddi, Sterling, Jota, Luiz and whoever I've forgotten.
              If you have 3 or 4 mids in the bracket, you can be very flexible going forward. But if you've tied up money in Trent, you're a bit restricted (unless you've forgone Salah for another 8m mid).

              1. Piggs Boson

                11 months, 5 days ago

                At this point I may as well just post my current team:

                Vergruggen
                TAA - Shaw - Botman
                Rashford - Saka - Martinelli - Sterling - Mbeumo
                Haaland - Jesus

                Areola - Anderson - Beckenbeyer - Woodrow

                I'm struggling to remove a single 0.5m out of that front 7, I adore every single one. And the two 4.0m defenders give me that crucial 5.5m defensive slot. Bench is dodgy, but It's a compromise I'm happy to make for that 11.

                The flexibility in midfield you mentioned would be attained through Martinelli. Being the one you could remove for any bandwagon, and then put the money elsewhere.

                I guess our key difference is how we rate the City and Spurs mids.

                Trent will surely be the highest scoring defender by a distance. He's kind of unique. He can smash in 6pt goals at any time be it from FK or open play, and his assist potential is unrivalled in defence. His performance for England really lit a fire in my eye for Trent. The other cheap defenders don't come close to his attacking threat imo, and that makes him valuable. Whereas midfield has lots of alternatives. I haven't even mentioned Mitoma yet...

            If I go with a 5 / 4.5. / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4 structure at the back, I can afford:
            Salah Saka Martinelli Rashford Mitoma
            Haaland Wissa
            I'm quite into that at the moment

            Oh, I see what you've done. You've gone TAA over Salah. That's the equivalent of my Salah+4.5 defender to your Trent+9m mid. Yeah, horses for courses, although Salah is my captain when Haaland is not chosen.

    If I went no Salah I still wouldn't go Trent. I just think the value isn't there relative to what you could do investing that money in midfield.

    Pickford Areola
    Shaw Ake Gabriel Botman Baldock
    Rashford Bruno Saka Maddison Diaz
    Haaland Jesus 4.5m

    A) Salah, Brownhill, Mitoma
    B) Rashford, Maddison, Diaz

    I could see myself going B to start with the thought to WC back to Salah once the budget options present themselves.

      I didnt play last season so didnt follow closely

      Mitoma looks to be most popular here but has the least minute played. Is there something I should know?

      Gross looks the most nailed but least popular too.

      Is it roll the dice and stick or is there more to it?

        Mitoma started the season as backup to Trossard but after WC De Zerbi described him as unbenchable. BHA had a crazy schedule at the end and suffered widespreaf fatigue after their FA Cup run. Groß split his time between RB (covering Veltman) and the no6 role. Should mostly play the latter & is likely on pens. Lots of new talent coming through like Enciso who may well be the new no10 with MacA gone, might share mins with Joao Pedro though. March should be fairly nailed RW (but there's also Buonanotte). Big hole alongside Groß if/when Caicedo leaves, no obvious replacement there yet

        I kinda wanna rotate Beyer Baldock Bell for the 3rd defender and pump funds ahead. Maybe even Branthwaite or Van Hecke if they play. Gabriel and Pinnock the other 2 defenders. Their xG is super high for defenders and are in good defences. Doesn't seem worth it spending too much in defence this year.

          I imagine I'll shift to Trippier, and maybe Trent (after having a look at Pool's new tactics), on WC but a cheap starting defence is very appealing. Isn't it usually the case that most teams (City especially) struggle to string together consistent CS in the opening weeks anyway?

        Brighton keepers are a no go for me now they've signed Verbruggen and Steele is ridiculously also priced at 4.5

          No appeal for me anyway when you can have Estupinan's attacking threat for only 0.5 more.
