Thanks, Neale. Always interesting looking at these metrics. I always wonder what it'd be like going with an all "value" squad, with maybe, say, Rashford at 9m as the default captain and spreading the funds around. I'm not crazy about Salah/Kane at 12.5, nor Haaland at 14.

Fascinating! Now I just need to understand what this tells us about a balanced team. The further towards the back of the team you go, the more value there is in cheaper players? So go cheap at the back?

      Something like

      Steele 4.0
      Saliba Mings Botman Beyer Bell
      Salah Martinelli Rashford Mbuemo Foden
      Haaland Gakpo 4.5

The trouble with someone like Salah is if you're not captaining him, you're sitting a huge amount of money on player with poor value, and therefore getting a poor return for your budget.

In exchange, you sit small sums of money on cheap value players. They give you good bang for your buck, but you're not using much buck.

I think it's better to move the 12.5m off of a poor value player, and distribute amongst those 6.5-8.0 players with decent value. I think overall, the projected points of your team increases.

This is over the season of course, and in the short-term, over a good set of fixtures, someone like Salah can be good value. But that aggressive method costs transfers, and if your moves are tied up elsewhere for a while you could be stuck with a value vampire.

Whereas if you set a up a good value team for the long haul, with the expectation of getting tied up elsewhere, you can still deviate to hit fixtures as your transfers allow, but your team will be more resilient in the long-term.

People go on like Haaland is the second coming of Dwight Yorke. He's good but not good enough to captain every week. Salah is also good.

Other 8-9mids like Saka and Rashford are more than good captain alternatives to Haaland

If you fill your team with the best value players you'll have a huge amount of money left in the bank, and hence not score many points. So it's really those pricier players, who are still fairly decent value, that are the true gems. That way you have vast amounts of budget sat on decent value.

Based on the article above, these would be: Trippier (0.8), Trent from GW30 onwards (0.75), Martinelli (0.69), Odegaard (0.67), Rashford (0.66), Saka (0.62), Toney (0.69), Wilson (0.64), Jesus (0.6).

    Posted this on the previous thread but given the vibe of this thread I figured some people might enjoy my comment so here goes;

I see everyone racing for Trent again (even though he rose - for some bizarre reason) but nobody is talking about Robertson? Hear me out... I've always rated Robbo as an FPL asset and enjoyed using him as a differential.

    Stat breakdown/comparison

    Robertson;
Season - Pts - Mins - Mins per Point (lower is better)
    17/18 - 111 - 1940 - 17.48
    18/19 - 213 - 3216 - 15.10
    19/20 - 181 - 3111 - 17.74
    20/21 - 161 - 3384 - 21.02
    21/22 - 186 - 2537 - 13.64
    22/23 - 121 - 2579 - 21.31
    Totals; 973 - 16,767 - 17.23 av

    Trent;
Season - Pts - Mins - Mins per Point (lower is better)
    17/18 - 83 - 1573 - 18.95
    18/19 - 185 - 2460 - 13.30
    19/20 - 210 - 3173 - 15.11
    20/21 - 160 - 3029 - 18.93
    21/22 - 208 - 2853 - 13.72
    22/23 - 156 - 2922 - 18.73
    Totals; 1002 - 16,010 - 15.98 av

Robbo averages 162.16 points a season (across the last six) if you take out his worst and best seasons then he averages 162.25 points a season. Robbo earns (on average) a point for every ~17mins 15seconds played. Alternative view is 16,767 / 90 mins (full game) = 186 games which in turn is approx 5.23 points per game.
Trent averages 167 points a season (across the last six) if you take out his worst and best seasons then he averages 177.25 points a season. Trent earns (on average) a point for every ~16minutes 0seconds played. Alternative view is 16,010 / 90 mins (full game) = 178 games which in turn is approx 5.63 points per game.

Is the extra 1.5M on Trent really worth it? For an extra 15 points a season? Trent to > Robbo allows you to do 4.0 DEF > James/Chilwell/Shaw/White, as an example, who will definitely outscore a 4.0 fodder by more than 15 points across the season.

Just curious people's thoughts on this?

My only thoughts are, yes Trent MIGHT play higher this season, Robertson MIGHT get rotated more again (largely diminished minutes in the last two seasons, but no UCL for them this year) and I still don't think Tsimikas is a threat to him. Maybe I've missed something off? Anyways, hope you enjoyed this read.

Robertson's role seemed to change drastically from GW30 onwards, making his long-term data unreliable. Their 3-box-3 shape in the attacking phase, meant Robertson was more of left-sided centre-back rather than the winger of old. Trent then inverted to complete the box midfield. This change coincided with a huge upturn in Trent's output.

Yes. Came to say this. Robertson role has changed and he has an able deputy in Tsimikas.

          I posted this response earlier:

You're going on historical evidence, but I think it's more important to try to understand and anticipate how Klopp's going to set up this coming season.
Moving Trent to inverted wingback on the right inevitably affects the rest of the defence. Other teams who do this have the fullback on the other side tuck in as a hybrid fullback/centreback; for me, that means Robbo will have to play more cautiously than he traditionally has.

Will they play that way again though? Seemed like it was just something Klopp had to do because they didn't have the midfield for it. They've bought 2 mids and are in the market for a DM. They could easily revert back to the 4-3-3 Klopp loves.

We need to see how they set up in pre-season. I'd be surprised if Klopp abandons the experiment after it's proved so successful, just like I don't see Pep abandoning Stones' new role after bringing in Gvardiol.
I think the new midfield enhances Trent's inversion while rendering Robbo's forward surges less necessary.

I quite like it. 3Bs rotate quite well for the first 3 gameweeks. Then I'm dropping Estupinan in gw4 to a 4.5 Brentford defender and removing one of the 4.0s for Botman or some other 4.5.

Be wary of price rises though (or even a quick drop to 3.9). I've given myself the option of getting Botman GW4 or 5, punting on his price not rising due to the first few fixtures, but if he manages to get a clean sheet or assist, I'll probably be priced out.

Yeah true they can get annoying. I'll probably be glued to fplstatisitics everyday 😆 I'm kinda banking on Botman dropping in price by GW4/5 as well tho considering he has like 30% ownership. Would be extremely unlucky if they somehow keep clean sheets against City, Pool, Brighton, Villa.

Nice (except Sterling), Bruno Gabriel/Saliba over Rashford Botman is very tempting for me due to Botmans fixtures.

Flekken is the Brentford keeper if Raya goes? Doesn't look like he is at the moment....

I'll remove Sterling if his preseason doesn't go well. He's just such an explosive pick at a cheap price. I can't help myself right now 😛 also same with Flekken. I'll switch to Pickford probably if Raya doesn't leave by the start.

It covers most of the good price points.

4.5 keeper, always the way to go

5m defender, Saliba Gabriel Porro etc
4.5 defender, huge amount of options
4m defender, obviously the weak point but currently we have 3 options

    9m mid, Rash Son
8.5m mid, Saka Odegaard Bruno Martinelli
    7.5m mid, Maddison Foden
    6.5m mid, Mbeumo Mitoma Eze

    7.5m fwd, Nkunku Gakpo Mitrovic

How do you rate him compared to Gabriel? I had Gabriel most of last season and he's in my current first draft

      1. Andy_Social
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

I've actually got them both in my draft. My 3rd Arsenal is Saka; I suspect the other mids will be rotated more than I'd like, and I don't really rate Jesus.

      2. Arteta
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

My opinion is that they are both underpriced for what they offer and represent great long-term picks. At the moment, I have Gabriel on my team just because the pre-season hasn't started yet and we're monitoring Saliba's status. I would also like to know what Arteta's plan is for Timber, and we will gain a lot of information during the preparation. I was very impressed with White's progress last season, and he deserves to stay a starter, but we'll see what happens. I will probably make the final decision an hour before the deadline, like everyone else here.

        1. Andy_Social
          • 14 Years
          3 years, 1 month ago

I have a theory about Arsenal's back line and where Timber fits in. It's become the fashion for a Back 4 to go Back 3 with a fullback inverting. With Arsenal last season, that was Zinchenko, with Tierney missing out.
I think what Arteta has in mind this season is to use the leftback to invert in some games, and the rightback in others, depending on the opposition and to catch oppo managers out. So in some games, White is benched for Timber and Tierney plays; in others, Timber is benched for White and Zinky starts.
If my hunch is right, all 4 fullbacks will be rotated, leaving Gabriel and Saliba as the reliable starters.

        2. Arteta
          • 10 Years

You're right, and I'm sure Arteta will use different systems for different parts of the games.

I don't remember when we had so much quality in defense. I wrote down the options the other day (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2023/07/05/fpl-2023-24-player-prices-revealed-live-wednesday-updates/?hc_page=4&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_25921893), but I left out the players who are most likely leaving (Holding, Trusty, Tavares, and Cedric).

How do you think Frimpong will fit in if they get him?
Watched him since his Celtic days, great player, would be an FPL points magnet.

            1. Arteta
              • 10 Years
              3 years, 1 month ago

Frimpong could fill in at RB, RWB, and RW from what I know. If Tierney leaves, we may invest in another versatile full-back and then count on Tomiyasu and Kiwior to step up at the left-back position if needed.

Points trumps xG - Saliba was scoring better than Gabriel before his injury.

        1. Zimo
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 1 month ago

Sure but if he's not getting the xG he's less likely to get the points year on year. Surely u know that. And its not like Gabriel doesn't score. 5 goals two years ago. 3 goals this year.

            • 14 Years

Yeh I know that. I also know Saliba is overlooked because his injury makes his last season stats look modest. Like I said, I'm on both; I wouldn't like to separate them, although Saliba would offer a differential to those who care about such things.
