With the start of a new Premier League season moving ever closer, we switch our focus to Sky Sports Fantasy Football.

£50,000 is on offer to the game’s winner in 2023/24, with cash prizes of £5,000 and £1,000 dished out to those managers finishing in the other two podium places.

The fourth and fifth-placed managers are awarded £500 each.

One manager will even win £10k via a random draw in Gameweek 1.

If you’re new to the Sky game or merely in need of a refresher on the rules and scoring system, we will go over the basics of the game in the article below.

SIGN UP TO SKY FANTASY FOOTBALL FOR 2023/24 HERE

HOW DO I PLAY SKY SPORTS FANTASY FOOTBALL?

TEAM SELECTION

Just like in Fantasy Premier League, managers select a team of players that will either earn attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world.

However, this is not a squad-based game: you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Any of these formations are valid:

  • 4-3-3 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 3 x MID, 3 x STR)
  • 4-4-2 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 4 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 4-5-1 (1 x GK, 4 x DEF, 5 x MID, 1 x STR)
  • 3-5-2 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 5 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 5-3-2 (1 x GK, 5 x DEF, 3 x MID, 2 x STR)
  • 3-4-3 (1 x GK, 3 x DEF, 4 x MID, 3 x STR)

The budget, like in FPL, is £100m. There is no quota for players from the same club, however.

TRANSFERS

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Match Days, allowing the maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Instead of one free switch per Gameweek as per FPL, the Sky Sports game allocates 50 transfers that can be used at any time during the season – with a limit of five in one Gameweek – creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

CHIPS

An ‘Overhaul’ (the equivalent of Wildcard) is also available in Sky Sports. Previously Sky managers were allowed two of these a season but this has been whittled down to one.

The Overhaul period will begin at the end of Gameweek 21 and resume when the first match is played in Gameweek 23.

You will be able to make unlimited transfers during this period until the first game day deadline.

CAPTAINCY

In the Sky Sports game, you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek so long as the players in question are in action on different days.

For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those Match Days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline.

Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek, too.

HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5

CAN MY TEAM LOSE POINTS?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

HOW DO BONUS POINTS WORK?

Just like in FPL, there are additional points on offer for other events in matches – although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below:

Tier 1 ActionPoints scored
3 saves made (GK only)2
4 tackles won2
60 completed passes2
2 shots on target2
Tier 2 ActionPoints scored
5+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles won3
70+ completed passes3
3+ shots on target3

Head over to our Premium Members Area to see which players will potentially benefit from the Sky Sports bonus on offer for saves, tackles, passes and shots on target.

HOW DO I PLAY AGAINST MY FRIENDS?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in the Sky Sports game. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

We have already set up our annual, free-to-enter Fantasy Football Scout mini-league, which you can enter by heading to the ‘Leagues’ tab and clicking ‘Join+’.

Can anyone help me find an old community article?
It was an analysis of the pros and cons of goalkeeper rotation pairs. Can't remember the author's name, but I think their grav was a cartoon squirrel (or something like that). Been trying to find it in Google and the in-site search tool, but clearly searching for the wing things.

I’d be interested to see this too as I’ve been doing a bit of work on it myself yesterday. The way I see it, in a nutshell, is that two rotating 4.5 keepers is a waste of 0.5 as you can’t predict where the hauls will come. They can come home or away and against big or small teams. 4.5 & 4.0 is the way I’ll go. 5.0 & 4.0 is another option depending on who it is and if you think you can afford it.
Be interested to see the article though as it’ll probably prove me wrong 😀

I think the conclusion of the article was that it is worth it, if you can get a rotation that avoids the big hitters and sticks with the home team when both fixtures are good. You miss some hauls against big teams, but it's made up for by the consistent returns against weak teams.

But I can't remember for sure! That's why I'm trying to find it again.

I can't find it either. I did screenshot an earlier rotation of Home/Away rotating pairs for Goalkeepers though if it helps:

      Arsenal - Tottenham Hotspur
      Bournemouth - Luton
      Brentford - Wolves
      Brighton - Nottingham Forest
      Burnley - Aston Villa
      Chelsea -Fulham
      Liverpool - Everton
      Manchester City - Manchester United
      Newcastle - Crystal Palace
      West Ham - Sheffield United

West Ham Sheffield have the worst rotation based on defensive fixture difficulty though (according to fixture ticker). Brighton Forest has legs though

My current options in approximate order of preference/likelihood:

            Trafford-Areola
            Martinez-Areola (if A is #1) - more expensive
            Fabianski-Areola (if A isn't clearly #1)
Areola-4.0 (if Areola is clearly #1) - cheapest
            Leno-Areola
Henderson-Verbruggen (if H goes to NFO and V is #1)
            Flekken-Areola (If F is #1)

I don't like the look of Trafford (or Burnley defence generally). I'm worried they'll keep trying to play the same attacking, possession football as last year, but against better opposition they won't keep the ball as much. Can definitely see them staying up and winning enough, but also see them looking vulnerable at the back in every game. Plenty of time for me to be proved wrong though.

Fair enough, hadn't looked at the fixtures themselves. Will avoid that one then. Currently sitting on Pickford+4.0, but so much time for things to change (or to find the article and decide to go for a rotation)

Interesting comment from his articles about efficient budget use. Doesn't take into account the opportunity cost of having a GK from a premium side limiting the outfield triple up.

"Every single result comes out with a premium defence. Only once do we see a defender at 5m and once a goalkeeper at 5m, all other iterations have 5.5m+ defenders as the most efficient use of funds.

Even with his monster haul of 157 for 4.5m in 2017/18, it was still worth upgrading Fabianski to De Gea for that season. That extra 1m wouldn’t have got you a better points boost spending it anywhere else on the field."

    1. Hairy Potter
      • 10 Years

Slim in terms of starting for Newcastle I'd say, but you never know. Won't play striker ahead of Isak/Wilson. Would imagine Joelinton would starting the left, but depends on Barnes/ASM situation. Then Miggy/Murphy may be ahead of him on the right. Think he's down in the pecking order in terms of filling in as a no. 8 as well.

I'd expect him to start on the bench, but he might start to push for more minutes this year. Howe likes to ease players in and Gordon himself said he wasn't fit enough to adapt to Newcastle's style after his move.

Also whether he genuinely deserved player of the tournament is questionable. Several other England players would have been equally good choices.

"Template" now just means players that will likely score points that were high % owned last year.
I get it's boring but why would I start with differentials.

Based on Official FPL's thread this morning with all the "pro" pundits, only 2 out of about 20 had Salah so I'd say this means my team is very very differential.

Not something I have any interest in reading either, but I made my views known on pointless early draft articles/videos yesterday. Rather than posting drafts the writer knows will be changed half a dozen times, better to wait until some kind of final form is ready. Together with squads not starting their pre-season friendlies yet, I think at this point in time there's nothing worth writing about!

You can get your teeth stuck into this if you like:

      Martinez (Areola)
      Estupinan Botman James (Chilwell Bell)
      Son Fernandes Saka Odegaard Rice
      Haaland Jesus (Woodrow)

I like the double Chelsea fullbacks and the son pick, I take it rice is still a hammer so that explains the 4 Arsenal players before anyone shouts at you!

Yes currently still a Hammer on FPL. I always like to try out a sneaky draft with 4 or 5 from the same team if possible, but something inevitably gets in the way before GW1, like a Foden injury or it just being a worse plan than an alternative (which is usually the case). Looking to perfect the Rice draft before he makes the switch and then assess during/after pre-season.

Martinez rotates well with Areola, but maybe Leno is better for the 0.5 which could go on Fernandes > Rashford. Otherwise I could go for Rash and downgrade Ode to Martinelli. Those are my current choices

But once he is switched, won't you have to move him out to confirm your transfers?

When I make transfer(s), the new team has to meet the requirements, yes. So that's why you gotta make the best team you can before he is switch, to give it a chance of actually being your GW1 team with no changes. Unlikely, but might be a route to an advantage and I enjoy exploring the possibility

Mbeumo i think but Mitoma could be v good again.

Mbeumo probably has more goals in him but both offer a lot of goal threat with assists etc.

What's with all the love for Son? He was rubbish last season and he might be even more rubbish if Maddison effects his play.

      1. Pedigree.

      2. Price drop removes some risk.

      3. If Kane moves, more opportunity.

      4. Typically a facilitator like Maddison is a boost to a player's FPL prospects. (i.e. Better players on a team mean more goals in general.)

There are indeed the reason for the love, so appropriate answer.
Still, I absolutely agree with 1Justlookin, because:

        1. Pedigree does not score points unfortunately, see chapters "Cr7" or "Vardy".
        2. Price is still very very high, while admittedly lowered.
        3. Kane will very likely not move from where he is.
        4. Maddison did not facilitate anyone but himself last term. I'll go with him, therefore.

          1. Pedigree - Why cherry pick when we can just have easily chosen Rashford 22 to 23, David Silva on again,.off again 2015 thru 2018, similarly Mesut Özil 2014 thru 2017, etc. etc. etc. Son is only 31, it's not unreasonable to think he's got a decent season left.

          2. Some of the "love" for Son stems from the lowered price.

          3. Rumours of the move, could be fueling the "love" for Son

          4. Maddison Top 5 for Key Passes per Game. He most certainly will create chances for his teammates.

In the end, I dgaf about if you choose Son or not. I'm making a reasonable case as to why others have him in their side.

He may be getting talked up a little here, but he’s only in 5.8% of teams, so the love for him isn’t universal (or at least, isn’t universally getting him into people’s early drafts).

I am sure he could go on to prove me wrong, but he seems quite the gamble at the £9.0m asking price.

I don't have 3 players in my team, I have 2, and just because you think certain players are average, doesn't mean you despise the team. That is some playground critical thinking and logic with some victimhood thrown in as garnish.

You can't go a day without commenting something negative on Arsenal-related posts, which means you have some kind of issue with this team, its players, or its supporters. From your comments, I'd say that you are either a City, Chelsea, or Spurs fan. And whatever it is, it is truly tragic.

I don't intend to communicate with you until you grow a pair, choose a grav, and pick your favorite team in your profile. I don't care what your name is, how old you are, or where you come from. But I can't take seriously someone who is afraid to share this kind of information but keeps on trolling others who do.

More victimhood and exaggerated meltdown. Please reread my comment again instead of frothing at the mouth and making up nonsense. You are not communicating, you are having a meltdown and going off on a tangent. I think Havertz and Rice are bang average, nothing more, nothing less. You then start whinging and having a meltdown like it is a slight on the team, its supporters and their families. The bottling of the title really has impacted you.

This is far from a meltdown; I'm simply exposing your rubbish and the truth. It's not even about today, it's about you being a total douche for a whole month before FPL opened. Reread your comments if you forgot. You just love getting into arguments with other members for no good reason, and I'm not on FFS for that crap.

I can see you are obsessed with Arsenal with your profile name and pic and I am sure you sleep with Arsenal bedsheets but if it makes you feel better, I like Arsenal. I just think you have overspent on 2 bang average players. You can stop having a meltdown now.

Whatever, we're both wasting each other's time, and I'm fine with disagreement. We will never agree on this topic, even after they prove you wrong, but you will probably keep saying it until you get a reaction from someone. In my opinion, all of this is just needless, and we could have a great discussion about other things in life and sports. Have a good day. 🙂

The real victim here is actually you, because you can't (or won't) show your true colors and openly support your team online. After today, I'm convinced that you will never reveal it because then it would be equal and others could tell you which players on your beloved team are bang average in their opinion. And this would obviously really, really hurt your ego. Smart move, Mr. Incognito.

All prices are locked till after the GW1 deadline, and his ownership is likely to be so low then that his price is unlikely to fall after that.
Red flagged players can still fall in price, but they need a greater number of net transfers out before they do so.

It is different but if if any of the big hitters from utd, ars and pool fire in midfield you are on major catch up. Being ‘template’ has a bad rap on here sometimes (mainly due to the rmts with the same players) but in actual fpl terms it’s actually probably the best tactic. Then jump on the higher performers quickly

Good question. This is pretty much what I'm planning to do (although I'd say after 4-5 GWs, maybe 3 isn't quite enough info). I always feel like the first few weeks give plenty of indication of form, new budget gems etc to build a WC team on. And once we're 7-8 weeks into the season I rarely want to overhaul my team completely (e.g. 2nd WC last season I only made something like 4-5 changes).

Not with that exact intention, but I often found myself Wildcarding on the first or second international break with the 1st break often 3-4 weeks into the season. Does depend on the state of my team though - if an early wildcard is needed to reset the team then so be it.
