Newcastle v Villa team news: Wilson, Barnes + Torres benched

The final Premier League match of the day features two of the success stories from 2022/23.

Newcastle United play host to Aston Villa in the evening kick-off, the match getting underway at 17:30 BST.

Eddie Howe has given a Premier League debut to new recruit Sandro Tonali in midfield but fellow summer signings Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento are only among the substitutes.

£4.5m midfielder Elliot Anderson is also on the bench after a fine pre-season, as is Callum Wilson.

Miguel Almiron, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon make up Newcastle’s front three.

Unai Emery has a new signing of his own on show as Moussa Diaby joins Ollie Watkins in attack.

Another two new arrivals, Youri Tielemans and Pau Torres, are only on the bench.

Emery has gone with two orthodox options in the full-back positions, namely Matty Cash and Lucas Digne.

Leon Bailey is selected in place of the injured Emi Buendia, who is out for at least six months with a knee injury.

The next template is going to be a Chelsea one, that’s my guess. Seeing a huge lack of their players across the teams in my league. I’m already eyeing slowly moving my team to something like:

  Depends what Poch does with them. Mudryk has shown way below what he's capable of, which is real class. Defence looks dodgy on paper, might do well on grass. He needs to get a tune out of Sterling like Pep did. For now they have potential, a good coach and little else.

  I've got Chilwell, with Jackson ready for next week (I benched him for Pedro today - perhaps should have been for Eze!).

I'd have been sitting prettier if i had gone with picking Isak, i even said a few weeks back i thought he'd score 2 on the opening day.

And Diaby over Foden which i changed Friday morning.

But then i wouldn't have had Pedro. Or Rashford. I guess I could have afforded Martenelli but he was a minutes doubt.

If Rashford scores on Monday night there's not much in it tbf.

What's your regret from what you were on till recently?

  Don't think I have any regrets at the minute. I never seriously thought of Saliba over Gabriel, so no complaints there. Not having Salah and going with Jota may be the one tomorrow.
