I know all history of football but as an active and conscious participant since 1994 World Cup.
The football I know is played at he highest level in countries with great footballing traditions and the very best players play in Europe.

If all you know is Premier League then maybe for you yes. From what I remember it kind of goes in turns, at one point mid 90's to mid 00's Seria A was the league having the very best in world.
Primera Division had her moments and too, surely don't need to mention the likes of Bayern, Barca or Real.

I appreciate everyone is different, but football, for me, is about supporting my home town team. Which division they are in, and the general quality of players in the rest league, is secondary to the rollercoaster of emotions watching my team week in, week out.

      1. What do you think about Man U fans who aren't from Manchester?

        1. Hairy Potter

I don't really care to be honest. I get that some teams have global support. Maybe I sometimes struggle when fans with no links to a club/city try to belittle fans of other clubs for whatever reason.

Sweet, but rather a provincial outlook. What about us lot in Asia, including, to be fair, Saudi Arabia?

        1. Hairy Potter
          • 10 Years

I think that's the dichotomy of football nowadays. Much of the appeal is the tribal nature of the game, but it now attracts a global audience with people around the world choosing teams in far flung lands to support.

          1. Andy_Social
            • 13 Years
            2 years, 6 months ago

Again, that's a very provincial way of looking at it. "Tribal" is not something I experience out here. Fans are passionate about their (European) teams, but it doesn't extend to hating rival teams - the culture is far more polite and tolerant.
And I write as someone who habitually attended 4th division games with my hometown English club as a (terrified) teenager in the 70s - the contrast couldn't be more stark.

            1. Hairy Potter
              • 10 Years
              2 years, 6 months ago

It may be provincial, but it's the "belonging" that is part of the appeal for me. I'm not saying it's how everyone does, or should, experience it. It doesn't have to be negative either. I don't hate other teams. I have family who are Sunderland fans and it's always been healthy rivalry over the years with them. I can appreciate watching a good football game as a neutral, but it's not the same for me as watching my club play, whatever the standard.

I absolutely endorse all that. My experience of football was entirely British until I hit 40, so I understand your perspective. But since then, living in Asia, I've seen another perspective and can now say they way you experience football is different to fans in Asia who have to support big clubs from afar.

That's fair. I think I'm may e less concerned about any potential talent drain to the Saudi league, as I'm less invested in the Premier League as a whole and more interested in how my team does relatively to the other teams in the league.

It's going to be strange watching the Champions League again this season, as it's a competition I haven't watched for years except for the odd final here and there.

Not the first article I've seen on the extra time and card changes here. Did anyone change process or team selections for these differences? I can't really see either being that significant.

It’s not gonna change anything for me FPL-wise.
Obv more yellows, and probably more attacking returns vs clean sheet points, but I’ve never played more than 3 at the back anyway.

    2. Andy_Social
      • 13 Years

Some posters are going overboard and advocating 3x4.5 defenders only. I agree with the article that the differences will be marginal. Even the yellow cards for dissent will diminish as players learn to respect the refs.

      1. Casual Player
        • 5 Years

Most people buy defenders for their attacking output yeah?

So any marginal decrease in CS and bonus points from games being maybe 5-10% longer will likely be offset by attacking gains.

I went for a super-budget defence however the premier league rule change was only a minor factor in my decision. Main reason was I simply wanted to pump as much budget into midfield as possible.

        1. Andy_Social

I accept I'm not "most people" but my rule of thumb is that defenders' bread 'n' butter is clean sheets. I avoid Trent and Spurs defenders for that reason. For 4.5 defenders, that's all I want. For 5m - I'll take them for 50% clean sheets (City and Arsenal). For 5.5 I want CS and attacking returns.
GW1 I had two 5m defenders (both returned but no CS) and 3x 4.5 defenders (all kept clean sheets, no returns) - it was a bench boost.

    What to do here?

    *Have both Rashford and Bruno

    A: Bruno -> Jota (-4) and bench one of Wissa(1) and Pedro(2)

C: bench Bruno and start both 1+2

I’m not a fan of Bruno if you have Rashy but wouldn’t get rid this week for a hit.
B (bench Pedro), as spurs will be open and he may get something this week.

This probably wont be a popular opinion but I would bench Bruno. Man Utd have to do something to tighten up the central midfield v Spurs or they'll get run over again, especially with Spurs inverted FBs creating overloads, so I expect Bruno will play even deeper. Then you can see how he looks v NFO before deciding whether to sell

      1. Hairy Potter

Spurs v Man Utd could be end to end like a basketball game.

Popular with me, mate! As a regretful triple-United-attackers owner, I'm expecting zilch out of Bruno and not much more from Rashford. I can't bench Bruno 'cos Garnacho will be sat there!
I could write an essay on how United was a tactical mess, but i'll restrict myself to just the observation that the #8s, Mount and Bruno left Casimero isolated far too often, so one of them needs to drop back.
ETH is a smart man and I expect him to fix his errors, but it might take more than one game to do it. Thus I'm not of a mind to sell any of them at this point, but they're gonna have to convince me over the next 2 games that they can play like champs.

I would play Eze. Arsenal not exactly watertight v NFO. Fulham are a decent attacking side & Brentford will probably use a back 4. I know everyone's going crazy over Rico atm but what he was most criticised for (among Brentford fans even) last season or 2 was his final ball so I don't expect he's become an absolute assist machine over the summer

Sorry I didn't realise that In recent years, strict dress regulations, mandatory gender segregation and a ban on women drivers were abolished.

A guardianship system, which forbade women from travelling or even leaving the house without a male family member, was amended.

It's so refreshing to know that women is Saudi Arabia can now enjoy the luxury and freedom of driving a car.

Not a supporter myself, but I'm extremely impressed with Arteta's tactical evolution. He'll push them closer than last season, and IF City show the slightest twinge of treble-induced complacency to add to the personnel losses, Arsenal could do it.

Somehow I just feel like, aside from Rodri, their midfield is starting to look a bit less intimidating than it once was. Kovacic, Paqueta, Foden, Bernardo, Grealish... its strong but not unbeatable?

Given how well Pep has them recycling the ball in attacking positions as a team, I think they are a bit less reliant individuals in the midfield to unlock the majority of teams. Also the long ball to Haaland on Friday seemed to add something else for defences to worry about.

Yeah fair enough.... quite surprising backlash / anti-Arsenal sentiment kicked in once it seemed realistic. We'll keep it quiet for now 😉

        3. Arteta
          • 10 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

Not yet. I'm really trying not to think about it because Manchester City are still too strong and will surely bring in new players. Paqueta and Doku are coming, and they are still active on the market. I would only start believing if they lost both De Bruyne and Haaland for a long period of time because they are irreplaceable.

Everyone knows how it is with Arsenal and injuries. They hit them sooner or later, then they need time to recover, and replacements don't always step up. Jesus had issues in the preseason, and so did Zinchenko. Tomiyasu, Tierney, and Partey are also injury-prone. As we know now, Timber will be out for most of the season, and sadly, he was a perfect player for Arteta's system.

Arsenal will also need a lot of luck to keep the core of the team fit for nine months and energy to consistently perform at a high level. You can be great for most of the season and ruin everything in April and May. I'm just a realistic optimist, but I do dream about winning the league in a few years, especially if Guardiola and Klopp leave.

I thought Garnacho had a lot of the ball but didn’t achieve much.
Rashford looked off form and Fernandes played quite deep .

Don't see the appeal of Garnacho. Not sure if I'm missing something here.

      Just do Rashford to Garnacho.
