    Benching headache this week:

    Son(c) Rash Ode Mbeumo Eze
    Haaland Alvarez Watkins

    Think it’s between:
    Mbeumo (New A)
    Eze (Villa A)
    Alvarez (Whu A)

    Reluctantly leaning Mbeumo.
    Any ideas?

    A) Pedro and Foden to Mbuemo and Alvarez (-4) and nothing in the bank:

    B) Pedro and TAA to Jesus and Gvardiol (-4) and .9 in the bank

Have been going toward Jesus all break but I’m realising I should at least consider option A, though I fear chasing past results

    1. Herger
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

Not a fan of either tbh. I get getting rid of Pedro, not so keen on losing Foden/TAA - or getting in Jesus for a hit. I think I’d roll and reevaluate next week - especially if you can bench Pedro. If you’re adamant you’re doing one I’d go A but yeah, not keen

      1. Boberella

I agree with this, although I’d want Mbeumo next week for sure.

        • 4 Years

Yeah, this seems wise. I would like to to roll, but all it takes is a Pedro price drop (or Mbuemo price rise) for me to miss out on option A.

Since I’d like to keep Trent and Foden though I may stick it out, can play Estupinan or even Archer and bench Pedro.

Cheers for the thought out help

Is Kabore very nailed on for Luton? I hear Doughty being talked up a lot. Ogbene has done well late in Luton games off the bench. A bit biased now but he did well for us v France and Netherlands, playing left or right, one of our very few bright sparks. Could be a decent punt GW7.

No. Doughty put in a great performance at RWB (I think), until Kabore came in for that position late on in the game. Having said that Kabore still looked good when he came on.

Maybe less secure a starter than we thought at the start of the season but will start plenty. Also maybe some early subs though...

Lmao people selling rashford for Son.

Rashford 3 returns in 4GWs and great schedule coming up despite “poor start”. You are throwing away a Saka level player (who’s also being sold). These players are season keepers because they’re one of the first players you think of when their respective teams score no matter who they play against. Defensively Man Utd are in shambles but they’ve been creating plenty of chances going forward.

    Hoooooooooooooold

I can get moving on ManUtd assets given the fixtures or with some of the issues around the squad, I had been planning on keeping Bruno and selling Salah but have since reversed that. But yeah selling Rashford after he's started to return due to playing on the left is a funny one, especially for a player that has returned in one game and won't play a defence like Burnley every week, then again he returned twice against Forest and I saw more people looking to get rid than this week. For me with fixtures like Brighton, Palace, Brentford and City in the next 6 mean it's probably not the worst choice to move on, there will be points on offer there of course but there are other mids performing well with better fixtures for the next while

The harder the fixture, the more the saves. And on average keepers get half their returns from saves, and half from CSs. So fixtures really don't matter with them.

Those tough games look ripe for save points with the way West Ham defend. And you never know, if they keep a surprise CS it's a double pointer.

I've gone with Leno. 3rd highest scoring GK so far despite facing 3 of the top 4 xG earners (Brentford, Arsenal, City) in the first 4 matches, also faced penalties in each of those games. Has a nice run now, facing 9 of the bottom 10 in the next 15 I think and Palhinha will be back which should help. He's generally done well in games against the tougher teams anyway which I think is the key thing for me with regards to longevity as a pick (like Raya last season)

    Why xGI is hogwash:

    xGI/90 last season:
    Rashford: 0.55 = 0.46 xG + 0.09 xA
    Bruno: 0.53 = 0.24 xG + 0.29 xA

Looks even in xGI. But almost all of Rashford's xGI is made up of xG which is worth 66% more points than xA. And when you take this difference into account, the landscape is vastly different...

    Rashford = (0.46 xG * 5pts) + (0.09 xA * 3pts) = 2.57 xAttPts/90
    Bruno = (0.24 xG * 5pts) + (0.29 xA * 3pts) = 2.05 xAttPts/90

25% more xAttPts than Bruno. That massive difference is also reflected in the actual points they got:

    Rashford: 6.4 pts/90
    Bruno: 4.8 pts/90

xGI is not fit for FPL purpose imo.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

I don't agree it's "not fit for FPL purpose", you're measuring how likely it is that a player is involved in a team's goals or how regularly they will be involved in one per game. Just because Rashford (FWIW, a centre forward or left-wing forward) has higher expected points than Bruno (a central midfielder who was played as a defensive midfielder a number of times last season as well as having to do a shift at RM a few times) had higher expected points doesn't for some reason nullify it's usage by any means. I could actually argue the opposite, that Bruno having a similar expected goal involvement from the positions he was often in was impressive and makes him an excellent pick given he's still creating or getting chances from positions that are far more defensive. Like anything (including xG or xA), you're not looking at it as an absolute, you're using it in comparison with/relation to other stats or facts and trying to place meaning in it.

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 11 months ago

Also in this specific example (of Bruno v Rashford), you're also taking into account other factors like consistency and availability surely. Yes Rashford did better than Bruno, but the year before Bruno's 10g 6a far outweighed Rashford's 4g 2a, or the season before of Bruno's 18g 12a to Rashford's 11g 9a, with him both times being available for more matches. If we're taking into account the occasions when Rashford doesn't get to play at LW then surely we're taking into account how little Bruno has been able to play as an attacking midfielder for the past 12-18 months?

xG is the main metric to go on in fpl.
To put it simply, pick the guys who overperform their xG as it is a sign of an elite finisher, as they finish even from low xG chances.
Stay away from the underperformers like Maupay and Enzo Fernandez because they are awful at shooting

I'm with you mate. Only stat I use is the eye test, comes up with decent picks. Can't believe how complicated people try to make FPL, it really isn't a complicated game.

Maybe I'm overly stubborn about this, but I have a very strong preference for watching full games over highlights. I feel like seeing where moves break down is as important as seeing when they result in a big chance, and I really like to follow the little intricacies of tactical shifts in-game which I don't always get a sense of from highlights.

    My gameweek rankings have been:
    1M
    6.8M
    1.1M
    6 4M
Do you think this indicates that my team is basically ok, but I have been unlucky 2 weeks, or maybe it's rubbish and I've been lucky for 2 weeks 🙂

I presume that's GW4 at the top? Mine have had a similar pattern:
      612k (GW4)
      5.9m
      500k
      4.7m
And overall rank of 886k at the moment.

My team is 'moderately template', and I've had a couple of good captain calls (e.g. Jota GW2). IIRC, GW3 went against the grain a bit, and so even a pretty terrible GW rank didn't affect me too badly.

      What's your overall rank now?

Ooof I thought mine was mad.

Mine are a bit mad too, wouldn't place much value in it this early on. I've only had one good week so far

      GW1 - 2.1m
      GW2 - 6.4m
      GW3 - 58k
      GW4 - 7.4m

      It was

      GW2 6.8M
      GW3 1.1M
      GW4 6.4M
      I'm 2.2M overall.
Have wildcarded. Looking at that sequence though maybe I've wildcarded a week too early : -)

This feels very knee-jerky and chasing points but I am tempted to -4 and take Watkins and Sarr out in favour of Archer and Son (have Maddison) and revert back to a 3-5-2. Son v SHU could be great if he plays up top.

I'm getting cold feet on Szoboszlai as a pick. Looked excellent v Bournemouth and Newcastle, but despite scoring last week he didn't look as involved from what I saw. Looking at the pass maps it seems like he's definitively deeper and less involved with Nunez on the pitch which explains it. So where do I go from here. Would be happier naturally to have an option that is longer term, but given I'll be keeping a close eye on the likes of Bowen and Son over the next two games to see if I want them or not, this may be a fairly short-term pick.

    A) Szoboszlai (wol WHU tot bri)
    B) Mbeumo (new EVE nfo mun) [have Wissa]
    C) Eze (avl FUL mun NFO)
    D) March/Mitoma (mun BOU avl LIV)
    E) Anyone else 7m or under

Out of those I think I like the look of Eze the most? Or one of the Brighton lads but I am wary of minutes risks in the next few weeks. Mbeumo has been a pain in the arse though so maybe I need to accept defeat and get him. Being stubborn and not getting players has often been an issue with me in the past

I have to admit, I am really tempted bringing in Nunez. Last season I brought him in on WC and immediately got the red, utter fail.

I think he will start from now on as his link up with Salah is good but tbe biggest issue is Gapko of course and early substitutions. It just seems he he will get points though no matter how many minutes he is on the pitch.

Same decision on 3-4-3 or 3-5-2
For me I need to decide whether Nunez scores more than Rashford or Bruno, to fit in my team.

It is potentially an option for me but until I see him getting his shooting boots on I won't be going near him. 5 shots last week (with at least 2 being huge chances) and not one on target makes me feel like the Newcastle performance was an outlier

Why wait on Son? Funds? I know I was more convinced / ready to hop on as soon as I saw him starting up front, but I don't really see the fixtures as that off-putting - especially if Mbeumo gets a pass on fixtures like Newcastle (A) due to penalties when Son is likely on pens too. If its just the next 2-3 weeks I think Mitoma could be the top scorer among those you've listed but I think its fair to be wary of rotation due to Europe at this stage

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 11 months ago

Funds are part of it, I could actually get him this week though if I ignored Alvarez but I've begun to feel like he's a need rather than a want. I don't think the fixtures are off-putting either but I need to see that A) he definitely continues in that role and B) how he performs against better teams. He'll absolutely still get chances against SHU but the ones he had at Burnley were unbelievable, especially the first when you watch Burnley have two defenders in the box that both see Son next to them, and both go to Solomon and leave him. For as poor as SHU are I don't think they'll concede those sorts of chances often. I'm still wary of Richarlison too, yes he's been wasteful but Postecoglu doesn't strike me as the type to boot a player out with no potential comeback, and Richarlison did play his role in the system well (except for scoring of course).

Mbeumo isn't ideal for this week but it'd likely be that it's a longer-term move compared to all of the others being short-term that's making me consider him now.

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 5 Years

Yeah fair enough, I do agree SHU might be more of a Maddison game than a Son game if I were to captain one of them.

I actually haven't been watching City that closely the last couple of weeks due to non-Haaland captaincy so I'm not too sure about Alvarez tbh. Stats are nothing special & I'm a bit wary of his La Paz trip

            • 5 Years
            2 years, 11 months ago

Yeah I know there's probably a fair chance he gets a benching this week because of that but he's settling into his role well, when I saw him play alongside Haaland last year (when taking KDB's place) I was never too convinced by him, but he looks like he's beginning to gel and link up well with him now. He's getting into the box a lot more too which was something I felt he wasn't doing enough before with Haaland

B, although honestly I'm not sure who of the Liverpool duo I'd pick. I thought Diaz was fairly secure but his early sub v Newcastle (despite looking very sharp) after the red card and then subbed after 60 last week has made me question his security a little

Probaly Diaz and Jota will rotate on the left and then Nunez and Gapko for no 9. Pretty sure Diaz will start though, Jota is just to injury prone.

Alvarez is KDB until he reurns from injury and I see him as nailed but sure you have a decent sub?. Nunez remains a minutes risk, between 60 and 70 minutes on the pitch for him I reckon.

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years

I didn't consider them on my GW4 WC because I wasn't sure they'd start consistently

I think the only major change between GWs 4 and 5 WCs is that the fully nailed strikers didn't explode, while the main rotation-risk strikers had two or more returns, making things pretty complicated for those making the decision now

Do I regret skipping Alvarez, Darwin and Ferguson for Wissa? Nope. I'd have gotten way more points in GW4, yes, but I didn't predict that Wissa would hit the post, and a WC's critique can't be based on one GW. I believe these two/three explosive forwards are still rotation risks as long as their competitors are fit and their clubs remain in multiple competitions

Foden and Bilva can play the KDB role (right-sided CM or lone CAM). Gakpo and Jota can play the forward role. Ferguson has already been rotated a lot, which is probably why you didn't add him to this list 😀

I don't think there have been nearly enough GWs to count City lads as nailed, especially since the UCL is yet to start

All this could be wrong, with Darwin and/or Alvarez keeping the spot long term. But again, Wissa, Awoniyi and even Solanke don't have this issue, and they've got steady returns from 4 GWs already

So it's down to your risk appetite, I guess. I just wonder if this argument should also apply to the likes of Foden and Diaz from the same free-scoring teams, as I haven't seen a similar vigour for them in a GW where the nailed mids did well...

not as it stands. not sure who I would put maddison / Son in for to be honest as I like all my midfield options.

Maybe Foden > Son I guess

Get rid of Fern, he place for a shite team and the worst pick of the lot.

My main targets at the moment are Maddy, Son and Jesus. From those three what is your order of preference?

And i will have to get rid of either Salah or Bruno... which one goes for you?

Going by XG is dangerous atm. Look at Bruno spread and it is misleading.

That huge xG chance v Spurs that he headed over made him a much less appealing FPL target for me

Maddy is the one that should be in every team imo

Jesus pick I love. Exactly the kind of thing I look for in fpl.

Son not in the convo for me.

      Sell Bruno

        This.
Pretty much my thoughts. Maddy seems like a season keeper and Jesus really seems like fun punt on a player that knows where the goal is in a good side.

I'd go Bruno but maybe wait to see how Utd play with Højlund, could be a completely different team

Totally get your thoughts. But I'm not sure i can see it. They have now lost Antony, defence is a shambles and that midfield around Bruno is a mess. I will probably get stung now though haha

Not sure what to do atm on wc, I could either:
Use funds on Diaz/Jota or spread the funds on Diaby and Szoboszlai and rotate these two.
