To me, the whole point of playing FPL is to pick a team myself. Sure, I read others comments before making a decision; sometimes I follow them sometimes I go my own way.

If you're just going to copy someone else's team, where's the fun in that?

I think that is hillarious for somebody to ask a group of random strangers for advice on fpl. For a start it is likely that half or probably more aren't as good as the questioner.

It is about time they introduced a members only forum without the A or B, RMT content.

I mean, I sort of agree in the sense that I don't want to outsource decisions by presenting an A/B/C question & just going with the most popular answer from a group of strangers. But on the other hand, its great to build up a little network of people whose opinions you value & who you enjoy talking about the game with - even more so when they have different teams / ideas / playing styles from you, so that you can learn from each others' difficult decisions / mistakes / successes and build up your experience & depth of thinking about the game more quickly.

One of the questions she was asked was “What is your biggest weakness” she replied “my honesty” one of the male interviewers replied, laughing “I don’t really think that’s a weakness” she replied “I don’t give a f#*k what you think” 😀

A guy I worked with about 20 years ago was really unhappy about not getting a promotion and particularly with the interview feedback he'd got.

It seems when asked to talk about his weaknesses, he listed that his timekeeping wasn't great, the perception in the office was he was always at the drinks machine and he wasn't the best communicator. He seemed to think if he told them that in the interview it somehow couldn't be held against him!

The sad fact of the matter is, there are hardly any distinct teams to copy. There is only the template, with minor deviations. There are only a few valid FPL players at any one time. The proof of it is, you could see two totally identical teams and not even be able to say with any confidence that one was copying the other. Even the most ardent "I pick my own team!!; I play my own way!!!" managers will probably have at least 10/15 players in common with another engaged manager, selected at random.

As a Haaland seller, for the only gameweek in months where Alvarez hasn't come close to matching his output, it is looking increasingly clear that no matter how sound the rationale is for doing something on paper, if you take a risk you need to get lucky for it to pay off. If you take lots of risks you have to have compound luck for the majority of those decisions to go right versus the template. It simply is not a game which consistently rewards making creative picks, partly because the cumulative wisdom of the crowd is such a good judge of asset value.

This factor is amplified by the site's recording of FPL history. Why risk a multi-year sub-100k streak by taking risks which might get you in the top 1k or might equally dump you outside the top million or two?

So your choices such as they are are do what everyone else does, and vaguely enjoy the experience but risk getting vaguely frustrated when it's hard to make any headway, or spend every gameweek stressing about whether the risks you took will pay off and, even if they do, will continue to pay off when the template has done something different. Neither is very much fun, sadly.

      I don't think it's quite that depressing.

2 or 3 differences can be a huge swing in points sometimes. Just ask the people that sold Haaland + Mbeumo this week > Salah/Saka + Watkins

I've had a pretty template team all season and even lamented how boring my GW8 WC was and I'm top 20K atm. You need to pick the right times to get on and off certain assets and just always keep your head above water.

          Not necessarily better. Luckier.

I did a breakdown of Magnus Carlsen's insane season where he finished 10th and spotted a trend in the way he made transfers which I've been trying to implement myself for the last few years.

Basically, he did transfers in batches to attack fixture swings. So he'd do like a double transfer/hit of Doherty + Jota in when Wolves had a good run of games. Or like Salah + Darwin in.

That sort of targeted double up on fixture swings - Vardy + Maddison when Leicester got a good run of games etc. That's how you get ahead. You move early and decisively to attack fixture swings. Often times content creators and other more conservative managers will wait until the first 2 or 3 good games are gone before they start buying the assets but they are like 15 points down on the exchange already and behind the curve.

Being ahead of the curve is another benefit of having high team value and taking a hit heavy approach to FPL. You put yourself in position to get ahead and attack favorable runs rather than merely react to what has already happened.

I've done that a bit this year with Foden + Alvarez in GW3. And then using the WC in 8 even though my team was in a decent place so I could go triple Spurs. Gonna roll FT this week and then for GW12 fixture swing might look at a team like Brighton or Arsenal to target..

Very good take - makes a lot of sense and it's something I might try implementing myself. I recognise that my main weaknesses are:

            - An unwillingness to drop a player who has accrued value. A desire to keep Maddison was a factor in trying to raise funds elsewhere by dumping Haaland (which may pay off but it's not looking very promising)

            - An unwillingness to take a hit for a player - waiting to get him 'naturally' when the stars align, by which time his owners might have 15+ points on me.

            - Being slow to adjust to changing narratives. E.g. I had decided to WC10 and to get rid of Haaland to do so, ignoring the mounting evidence that cheap players had come to the fore (Palmer etc) who would enable a heavy hitter plus Haaland team - no particular need to sell.

We have both identified that content creators are conservative. So if most people get their ideas from them, the only way to beat the template is to get on picks even earlier. Nice idea - I'll see if I can make it work.

Ha ha that's me on wildcard GW8.. triple Liverpool attack. Darwin and Diaz plus Salah.
Not exactly hit the roof top, but at least i tried. And I'm hoping all the best for Diaz and his family, but that's not stopping me from triple Liverpool, and it's not Tsimikas. It's Szoboszlai. If you remove the two games Liverpool were effectively playing with ten men (nine in one) and take 35 mins down to ten unna third and look at Szoboszlai numbers development, with that run coming up, I'm going for it. Admittedly his numbers are more skewed towards assist, but he's one of the most accurate and deadly from long range and his bps is insane, and especially in games coming up he's going to mop the floor with passes, tackle's key passes.

Last season a friend of mine showed the top 2 players in a ML he was in, they where identical for 90-95% of the season. And not only that, both of those players followed the same "FPL experts" on social media. He just gave up trying in that ML after a while. I met one of them on a night out with my friend, he actually bragged about his ML position and rank(was 2nd place in that ML).

I challenged him on the part where they pretty much copied each other and the "experts", he just laughed it away and said it is a part of the game. This is btw a player that doesn't really watch football either.

Yeah I have a close family member who is currently beating me in my family ML who genuinely knows absolutely nothing at all about football. It's so easy to find content to help you to do well.

Not I agree with Camzy, to do *very* well, you have to know exactly when to jump on and off assets, even before the content creators who are typically a little conservative as they have rank histories to protect, but you can do well simply by doing what you are told.

Seems a pretty accurate description of the last season & a bit for me. I would like to believe there's many ways to play the game and that I can usually identify at least one or two better options than the template but the margins are so small that it certainly feels like a lot of luck is required. But I'm not really interested in consistent, solid ORs (having begun with a 94k & a 1.1m there's no streak to protect anyway..) so I'll just keep splashing and swinging around the millions & hope that one day I might end up somewhere near the top.

      1. _Make
        • 9 Years

I don't really have a streak to protect anymore but I'm still playing like I am!

I've been playing FPL since before it was 'the' fantasy game of record, 2005-6 was my first season I think, but I spent nearly a decade away from it because I preferred to play in paid prize leagues like the Telegraph. In those games you just swing for the fences, because nobody is going to remember the time you finished in bottom half five seasons ago!

TBH I may just make my FPL team as template as possible and stop caring - take all my risks in Fanteam where I am actually doing quite well - which makes a change!

      2. Hairy Potter

True. I bet against the WC, FH and BB that many were locked into the end of last season and had some sizeable rank jumps as a result. In part that was because I'd used my FH earlier and as a result didn't have the luxury of choice on some occasions. I was probably lucky that the FOMO picks that most content creators advocated didn't haul that much.

Last week was the first time I'd pushed my team this season and got punished with a 600k rank drop (will be more as I look to correct course this GW). It was a punt and one I felt that was justified given Arsenal and Villa's fixtures. Will just take on the chin and look to build from the rank I am after this GW.

Yeah, many were expecting another CB to come in as a challenge/replacement for Schar. As it is, we have Schar, Lascelles, Burn, Dummett with Botman out. Krafht has also played CB before and young Murphy looked decent there in preseason.

        Not really that strange.

We've got Schar, Botman, Lascelles, Burn and Dummett who can play CB. Whereas we were very limited and lacked any real depth or quality behind the starters at full back. Fully expect to see Livramento and Hall play more as the season progresses as Howe is very keen on getting players up to the required fitness levels etc before they start playing regularly.

Burn's your starting left-back, so you've basically got Lascelles (who isn't good) and Dummett (who isn't good + hasn't played for more than a year) as backup CBs for your first season back in the CL. Schar has been decent, but you really needed another right-footed centre-half instead of spending £40m on a LW about 6 months after signing Gordon.

Yes, Burn is our starting left back, which is why we signed a left back in the summer to provide competition and ultimately take his place longer term. Lascelles is a decent PL centre back, as he demonstrated under Benitez and now under Howe (everyone struggled under Bruce. Schar is much better than decent.

We didn't really need another right footed centre-half at all. Potentially, next summer it's an area to explore a bit more mind.

We desperately needed another wide forward, even after signing Gordon. Barnes has just been unfortunate that suffered a major injury but the signing itself made complete sense in the context of the overall squad.

That WC decision of no Haaland in gw10 has me in a right pickle. I know the decision was supposed to be until gw16 but this BOU fixture has me concerned more so now as it seems Haaland is back at it.

How are others that made the same decision reacting now? Getting him straight back in for a hit? Activating FH to get through BOU? Or hanging tough?

I would have to sell Trent (admittedly a bit of a luxury pick), Watkins, Trippier & probably forego Saka v BUR - or some sort of triple sacrifice basically (no way I'm selling Son/Maddi/Darwin), so no I'm going to hold. Will be capping Salah 12/14/15 and Son 13 so I'm sticking to my assessment that an uncaptained Haaland isn't worth that big a sacrifice over these few fixtures.

I think my mistake was timing - should have gone for this before the Arsenal game or made a better assessment of Man Utd defence & maybe waited til GW12

      Agree with Camzy

I'm in the same position and I'm sticking to my guns. United are horrible defensively, there was always a risk that Haaland would go big. The kick in the teeth was that Alvarez came away with nothing. The next game could have the opposite outcome.

And remember what you're getting for the Haaland money too. In my case it was Trippier (boo) but also Allison (yay) and Maddison (woot). You need a few weeks to bed in and see if you can get that return back. You very much still might.

The whammy for me was Mbeumo hauling, plus the lack of points from Saka, Wilson and Alvarez. It wasn't about underestimating Haaland, it was about the fact about the players brought in, not capitalising on the good fixtures they had.

Thought gambling on Saka & Watkins to outscore Mbeumo & Haaland would pay off and I'd emerge in a few weeks with Haaland restored. I captained Salah. TBH bringing in Gabriel to see him benched was as much of a blow as Watkins blanking!

If I course correct this week. I'll have an attack of Salah, Saka, Son, Maddison, Palmer, Haaland, Alvarez and Archer, and my OR before a ball is kicked would be about 1.5 million. Might just do that and put the million or so rank drop down to experience!

Yeah there's so much beyond our control here too. One of my major reasons for not going with Salah & Haaland was to prevent being locked out of Arsenal mids or forced to sell Son/Maddi for Saka. So I thought a nice differential strategy might be to work towards Salah/Son/Maddi/Saka/Martinelli. But then I ended up using Martinelli as the makeweight for Salah only a week after buying him due to the Jesus' injury 😕 (and pivoted to Trent instead)

Makes me smile looking at my 11 year old son's team. He's at 1.2 million with his WC to play. He has to be reminded each week to use his FT. The only real input I've had was suggesting a punt on Wood the other week. He looks well set for the coming GWs.

Just hold your nerve. Just accept he will probably score vs Bou, but Salah could equally do as well away to Luton.

And while games looks frightening on paper it doesn't always pan out the way we think. Watkins with no goal involvement vs Luton in a 3-0 win. Håland had one assist vs Bou last year when City won 4-0.

Your reason for going without were probably the games from gw12-14 (15). And that's still a viable play. Chelsea are not great but defence is good, Spurs are generally good and more importantly have central defenders that can match him on both physic and speed. Liverpool got Van Dijk back to his best, and Konate with pace and power to deal with him.

And: we predict on the basis of what we see. Haaland have braces vs Fulham, West Ham and United. All defences that are shockingly bad. In tougher games he's not explosive.
I guess that's the reason you went without when you looked at that run coming up.

And what we also see is that it's not just about wether going with or without in this period, it's also depends on how your team does overall, and like this week for example, not having Håland was less impact for me than not having the likes of filthy 6 and 8 pointers from the bench (Gabriel bench), and having Mitoma over Diaby. Darwin, if I take player by player comparison, scored me 10 for 6.6 less money (and could have had 12 if bonus were kinder).
      Sorry for long winded repost.

Thanks everyone for your input. I’m going to hold tough and save my ft in the process also injuries permitting. Alvarez blanking made it feel a bit worse, I agree. Especially as he was outscoring in recent weeks. I’m still ranked around the 300k mark so hopeful that the rest of the team will spread enough points amongst them along with the funds to justify foregoing the big man.

Haaland will not be the go to cap after GW11 upto GW15 then he also blanks in GW18.

You will be wasting your FH. Do ypu not have any alternative cap choice?

GW12 home to Liverpool he will still be the popular choice. There's no standout captain that week.

I know i am late to the party, but you have to hold your nerve.

I talked to MENTACULUS last week, and he was going to pull it GW10 (not on WC), and I was thinking GW12-15.

I am gulty as charged with content creators this week, as i was going Pedro to Nketiah for -4), but they were all saying and still defending today, that Trossard and Havertz can play there), so I bottled the hit. Well to Pras apparently).

But i am still going Darwin GW14/15, and Maybe Watkins GW12, but i have 0.0 ITB as i still have Saliba, Porro, Cash, and Tsimikas at the back, so Haaland is the fall guy.

My last decison is , is it next week, or GW14 for a couple of weeks? Could Wilson start 4 games in a row? GW12-16? Not many good strikers GW12/13 except Wilson and Darwin and Watkins (GW12)

Any advice for this week please?

    1 FT 0.1 bank

    Areola
    Cash Burn Tsimikas
    Son Neto Saka Salah
    Watkins Alvarez Haaland

    Turner Taylor Anderson Lamptey

That's basically my team after I bought Tsimi. Neto has to go. Hwang is good, but for one week only. Palmer I have and don't love, but since Darwin went up, check if he frees up enough funds to do alvarez to him. Gordon prolly the best pick, but his goals may dry.

Gabriel. Surely will play unless injured (easy fixture out of the way) and bookies have Arsenal as more likely to keep a clean sheet.

Copying someone else’s team seems exhausting tbh

I don’t get why content creators get upset with it though. Would be pretty easy to provide informative content without providing specific team details.

I'm not sure how skipping to the end of a CC video is more exhausting than studying stats, matchups, team news, tactics etc, but I do agree that it'd be better if they left out their specific team details

Totally this. It was really clear last season with the latter WC, FH and BB strategies in the DGWs. Many on here and some content creators seemed very unsure how to react and adapt when some FOMO picks failed and hits were flying. The content creators who knew the reasoning behind their strategy just got on with it.

I think the cycle of content creators being scared to punt for fear of dropping OR and therefore all going for safe picks strengthens the perception of a template and people follow it more.

I’m not sure FPL towers cares about team copying. if they do, there is an easy fix. Go back to 5-6 years ago and make the prices move more rapidly. Pretty soon, you cant copy teams because funds wont be available.
