Gvardiol is in fantastic form, and I'd take Vicario rather than Onana. I don't see Onana keeping a clean sheet at any of those games, especially considering who's guarding in front of him.

How nailed is Chalobah? Does Colwill being back in contention even influence his status, given both Badiashile and Colwill are left-footed center backs? And how long are Thiago Silva and Disasi out for?

I’m also looking at a Chelsea defender. Both Silva and Disasi are back. Silva subbed at 82 minutes for Disasi yesterday, Silva even got an assist. My money is on him personally, would love a Chelsea to chip in.

No BB for 37 & now Maguire out.

Any changes to squad, Bruno/Gordon was close but after watching Spurs might bench Son?

    Petrovic
    Walker, Hall, White
    Foden, Palmer, Bruno, Gordon
    Isak, Jackson, Haaland

    Raya Son, Porro, Maguire

Son looked decent although he kept trying to do it all by himself instead of passing. Not sure i would bench him when he is on pens and has two home games + Spurs will probably have to chase vs. Man City.

Going with this team heading into 37, up against rivals who have the template BB team.

I know I'm going to end up falling behind this week, but by how many?

Any upside in doing TC Haaland (or Palmer etc) in 37 and then just bench boosting in 38? I guess i see the bench boost ceiling at around 20 points whereas the TC ceiling could be more.

Ranked around 300k so nothing to lose at this point.

      Thanks

Fair consideration. Bench boost in 38 could really see rotation though. Who would you captain 38 - Saka? Haaland?

Either Son or Salah at present, or someone that is going for the golden boot (that isn't Haaland).

I think I'd still lean BB 37, TC Salah (prob) just because as you say it'll be possible to really pick an attacker with a lot to go for. But I think either could work

Ok thanks. My only counter argument is that Haaland is capable of 4-5 goals in the next two games, that is what tempts me with the TC in 37.

Preparing for BB37, generally happy with my team but have Munoz from Palace as my weak point who have Wolves away.
Used this weeks FT so the question is, with 4.8m is it worth taking a -4 hit to bring in a doubler?

In my ML it’s within 2 points (!), he has Chelsea and Spurs defence and will also BB and I have neither so feels like a hit would be worth taking to block potential clean sheet points. Cucurella, Chalobah, Van de Ven?
      Thanks

This was a really nice piece by Lateriser. Good FPL players should always be reevaluating their own decision making process and trying to improve it.

I went through something similar two years ago when I finished 200K+ in COVID season. I found myself taking too many risks against fixtures/value which I've corrected since then and it's been steady improvement since. Specifically, going against DGW/season value options in favor of form. That learned lesson has paid off this season with the example of going Nic Jackson on WC35 for instance whereas old me probably would have gone Watkins.

The way you win at FPL is twofold, minimize pain from high EO threats but also identify value that is missed. Players like Havertz that people wrote off for weeks thinking he wasn't nailed, players like Gordon who people overlook because of his YCs and low price point. But that's only half the battle. LR has traditionally been great at the second, finding value that others don't see but his comparatively poor season is due to not doing the first well enough.

You absolutely must minimize damage from the high EO threats. And you do this by identifying core value and being patient while others kneejerk in form options. That side of the game is what the 'template' managers usually do well in and because high EO has a higher effect on rank, it's why managers like Fabio Borges and the analytics based teams tend to do so consistently well, but not top 100 level well, typically.

I'm actually shocked the Jackson over Watkins thing worked out so well (even though i went Jackson as well). Watkins had just scored 13,7,9 before gw35 and Jackson had 4 blanks out of 5. I can see why some people went Watkins and went form over fixtures. Could have went either way.

I find with all of these reflections made post-hoc that remembering that last sentence is crucial. Yes Jackson was a good option, but he was also coming off a streak of missing every chance he got, and as you say Watkins looked electric too. I went Jackson, and am happy I did, but I don't think that somehow makes it much cleverer to have gone him than the Watkins route

I think you make a good point about patience and I generally think you’re better riding out a low patch than knee jerking in the flavour of the week all the time

At the same time I don’t think I’d ever keep a high EO asset to “minimise damage” if I didn’t believe they would score more pts than other options. Probably means I don’t get that Mikkel algo level consistency of a Fabio or Crellin, so be it.

I don't keep assets that I don't think will do well. It's about identifying which ones have too much going for them to ignore vs the ones that you can probably bet against with reasonable odds of success.

Liked this article a lot. Simple messages, but it’s often worth reminding yourself of basic principles.

The play your own game and make your own decisions is important. Still can be open to having your mind changed, or ask others for advice, but it’s just a better mindset to have your own ideas set first.

And I definitely feell better getting one wrong from my own process than having a bad outcome playing weak/scared and going with the herd.

Which is why I wasn’t even mad when I sold Saka for the two GWs he scored back-to-back 15s. Okay I was a bit. But I also sold him for the GW16-19 part too where everyone hated owning him. So swings and roundabouts

Also this reminded me how crazy it was when KdB was immediately “essential” based on 25 minutes. And yet hadn’t been essential for two seasons before that playing 90. Good times.

Yeah, I agree. i also do a lot worse in the years when I don't have time to make my own decisions and so just follow a template. Nothing against the templates, but I always seem to follow the wrong ones (I guess because I'm not doing any research myself).

Having said that, I think there's a fine line. Spending too much time researching seems to have a detrimental effect too, as you overthink things. I think there's a sweet spot. And hitting that sweet spot makes it easier to take the rough with the smooth, probably because, as you and Lateriser say, you know you're playing your own game, so nothing to regret.

      DGW decisions, 2 FTs:

      1. Why do most prefer Vicario over Petrovic?

      2. Which one to bench from Son, Bruno and Jackson?

Agree, see above. Livra higher ceiling, but less nailed than Burn?

      A) Walker to Gvardiol
      or
      B) roll it

      Thanks

      Great article.

I was great sniffing out differentials that no one else had, but what cost me big time was not having Salah in the first part of the season and Haaland now.

      Who wins?

      A: 8pts
B: Dalot + Bruno (13pts coming off the bench if Bruno does not play)

RMT had B just over 8 so that by a whisker (assuming he plays which to my mind is most likely scenario)

I need A to win/draw. I'm 8 pts in front of my rival in my main cup.

      What is better?

      A) Havertz + 4 points
      B) Gordon + BHA fixture

Genuinely considering Havertz > Gordon this week as a protection play since I'm narrowly leading my ML and maybe reverse it the following week.

Would attack the DGW and go B.

Prob just about Gordon for me, think Brighton are there for the taking.

How's this FH team? I'm chasing and up against the BB people.

      Too risky?

      Petrovic
      Gvardiol Romero Trippier
      KDB Palmer Richarlison Madueke
      Haaland Isak Wilson

I would rather have TAA or someone from Chelsea over Trippier

      Kelleher () -> Dubravka (BHA, mun) worth a -4?

On bench boost, which set of transfers would you do?

      A) Darwin, Van Hecke > Hojlund, Romero (-4)
      B) Darwin, Gusto, Van Hecke > Jackson, Romero, AWB/Dunk (-8)
