With Fantasy Premier League (FPL) live for 2024/25, we’ll be welcoming back our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers for the new campaign. Here, FPL Family’s Sam – who has five top 40k finishes in the last seven seasons – assesses the defensive options from her beloved Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs defenders

It may come as a shock to read that the first thing I do when FPL goes live isn’t to look at the full list of Spurs prices! But after I have auto-picked, checked my team ID and added the premium picks, the pull of my girlhood club is too strong. I soon find myself staring at the player list to work out how I will invest. Owning Spurs’ players in FPL always gives me a special kind of thrill.

With Spurs’ attacking football under Ange Postecoglou, the likes of Son Heungmin (£10.0m), Brennan Johnson (£6.5m), James Maddison (£7.5m) and Richarlison (£7.0m) will probably be the ones that managers turn their attentions to.

However, for me, the real interest at Spurs this year could come in the form of a defender – even with a lack of clean sheets last season.

When the Premier League announced the five Spurs prices on Saturday evening, my attention was drawn to Pedro Porro (£5.5m), Guglielmo Vicario (£5.0m) and Destiny Udogie (£5.0m). Last season, Spurs kept just seven shut-outs, four of these coming in the opening nine Gameweeks. Of the defensive players on the books, only Cristian Romero (£5.0m), Porro and Vicario started all seven of those matches.

2023/24 Defensive Numbers

Over the course of the season, Spurs were injury and suspension hit at the back. Romero and Udogie were both sent off against Chelsea in Gameweek 11. Micky van de Ven‘s (£4.5m) injury in that match also meant he didn’t feature again until Gameweek 21. The lack of consistency in the Spurs’ defensive line-ups last season certainly didn’t help their fruitless pursuit of clean sheets. Indeed, the only ever-present was the goalkeeper.

PlayerStartsClean SheetsFPL ReturnsPoints Per StartTotal FPL Points
Guglielmo Vicario38772.9112
Pedro Porro357183.9136
Cristian Romero337123.2107
Destiny Udogie285102.879
Micky Van De Ven2758381
Emerson Royal11011.627
Radu Dragusin4112.514

The lack of clean sheets may well put many FPL managers off investing in the Lilywhites. I certainly understand why! However, with more consistency in the back four, or even back five if Postecoglou decides to play Radu Dragusin (£4.5m) alongside Romero and van de Ven, the defensive numbers should improve.

For FPL managers, there are some nice options at three different price points. Each of the Spurs defenders offers a form of attacking threat; it just depends on your available budget and which metric you want to back.

Attacking Numbers and Bonus Points

Spurs defenders

Above: Spurs players sorted by xGI in 2023/24

Pedro Porro

Only Alfie Doughty (12) registered more attacking returns than Porro (11) last season. In total in 2023/24, the Spaniard recorded three goals and eight assists. His 18 returns were only bettered by Arsenal trio Ben White (£6.5m), William Saliba (£6.0m) and Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.0m).

Porro was top for expected goal involvement (xGI) across the Spurs backline last time out with 8.98, not far behind striker Richarlison (£7.0m). Porro also had 12 shots on target, again top amongst the Lilywhites’ defenders. This, at first glance, appears positive for the new Bonus Points System (BPS). Indeed, it ranks him tied fourth across the defenders in the game.

Spurs defenders

Above: FPL defenders sorted by shots on target in 2023/24

However, these numbers are relatively low when compared to the attacking assets in FPL. So, the overall impact on the BPS metrics will be small, especially if Spurs fail to keep a clean sheet.

To counter this, though, Porro was already third for baseline BPS amongst the defenders last time out.

Porro registered 136 points in the game last season; again this was only bettered by the three from the other side of north London. All of this justifies Porro coming in at £0.5m more than Udogie and Romero.

Cristian Romero

Would you downgrade Munoz to a 4.5M defender in order to upgrade one of two 4M defenders I have on the bench?

    Areola
    Gvardiol / Munoz / Mykolenko
    Salah / Gordon / Foden / Eze / Palmer
    Isak / Havertz

    Fabianski | Barco | Faes | Cannon

Of coarse, Anderson & Burn look great value, both arguably worth 5m each.

I like Munoz, think I‘d prefer a 6m striker over Eze for first 3 which would give you 1m

Muniz or Wood in a 343, else Johnson or MGW as 6.5m mid

Basically have Konsa, Burn, Andersen, and Myolenko to let me pair the 4.5 defenders.

That gets me Gordon to Watkins with the same team as you structurally at price points.

Thanks, who would the 5th defender be? Will try and do a draft with your suggestion and see what it looks like.

        Really wanted Gvardiol though!

Just any 4 defender. I got it from another site. Won’t name it here haha.

But they have 8.5 goalie, 4 X 4.5 defenders, 1 4 defender. Then there is Foden, Eze, Palmer, Salah, and a 4.5 mid. Havertz, isak, and Watkins lead the line. Alternatively you can go with Haaland, Saka, Gordon, and a 6.5 like Bailey to replace Foden Havertz Watkins and the 4.5 mid. Am basically debating these 2 setups currently with the same back line and goalie

    Turner
    Yoro, Mykolenko, Burn
    Salah(c), Gordon, Johnson, Cho
    Haaland, Isak, Havertz

    Leno, Rogers, Andersen, Konsa

How about this. Starting with Haaland and (c) him second game. Super easy to use your 2 FT's after that if he doesn't perform. Other way around is way way more difficult and almost impossible with 2 FT. Besides that you can play a VERY nice team with Haaland in it like this:

    Flekken | Turner
    Burn | Martinez | Mykolenko | Andersen | Faes
    Salah | Eze | Garnacho | Odegard | Elanga
Haaland | Isak | Calvert Lewin

You can always fix things by getting rid of Haaland, but you'll have to sacrifice a lot to bring him in later.

Thanks you posted it, striking the balance between affordable H+S team & value for money team is the key to start.
Which forwards are you comfortable starting with ?
Watkins - Playing in English league consistently and improving season after season.
Isak - had breakthrough season and still rotating with Wilson due to injuries.
Havertz - everyone was talking when signed for chelsea and no one was considering when came to arsenal. Had his season as midfielder and forward this time around.

So many options @7.50 and rest is hope.

No Haaland drafts look so good on paper, currently only dilemma going with or without Ode:

    Sanchez Sels
    TAA Maatsen Mykolenko 4.0 4.0
    Salah Son Odegaard Eze Nkunku
    Isak Watkins 4.5

    1. Think

Looks good but on paper only. 'as you said'.
You are betting on two 4.00 Defender and one 4.50 FW (who practically doesn't exists) + on hope of nkunku to come good after injury ridden season (under new manager)

    2. FPL_trail_runner

Thats a great team but not for week 1

Maatsen probably wont start off the start and even if so West ham and Arsenal mean we can wait
Everton dont have great fixtures initially
Nkunku Eze Watkins can wait till week 3/4 onwards

And the elephant in the room

Haaland at home to a newly promoted team who play open at the back were in league 1

Play the short term game and move to the template slowly

Dunno. Sa and Flekken. Tricky fixturess though, although that's not always bad for keepers.

Areola is our #1 without a doubt. Can’t see us replacing him with the Sheff Utd keeper that got dumped for a guy called garbage

Pretty sure he will be sold, and a Kepa swap. Even if he does make GW1, who wants to book a keeper transfer. Any replacement coming in will be 5.0 for sure.

Word is he'll be first choice (at least initially), regardless of whether a new keeper comes in. He certainly won't be sold, as Maresca likes him

So im pretty set on my structure and have decided the following:

    - Not going with any Arsenal for first 5 weeks : fixtures, Saka wont start week 1 probably, and want to see how much Arteta rotates the defence

    - Not going any Chelsea, ditto Palmer back late, new manager, tactics, city first etc

    - Going Salah + Haaland

    - Backing Liverpools early fixtures till week 6

    - Backing Spurs to score goals in first 3-4 fixtures, i like there cheap mid options and fixtures where they can play to their strenghts (on the break mostly)

    - Going with double Forest attack, great fixtures, cheap, easy to move if they wont work

    - Going with multiple 6,5 mil midfielders, not 100% set who yet, easy to move on to Bailey, Nkunku, Grealish , Garnocho but like my current 3

I like my Balance so far, and plan to wildcard at some point week 5-8 range.

    Miguel
    Hall /Burn, TAA, Gvardiol
    Salah MGW Hudson-Odoi, Kulu, Johnson
    Haaland Isak

    4mil Konsa Barco Stewart

Kulu and Johnson is surely over-kill, and they over-lap positions. Agree with your logic.

Kulu is now playing as the central player in the position behind the striker so far this pre season and Johnson to the right.

Lets see if it continues but i like their prospects , will see if this continues with Maddison also , maybe they play two attacking 8's (Kulu + Maddison) ahead of a defensive mid + front 3

Here's my team, it is fairly different form yours, but we do share simialr logic. I just went cheap at the back.

              Onana (4.0)
              Munoz - Davis - VDV - (Myklo, H-B)
Salah - Eze - MGW - Andreas (Luongo)
              Haaland - Watkins - Isak

Pretty set on the attack, defense strtcure is about right, but might switch a couple around.

Yea. Even going to put a sneaky bet on Ipswich to win, and maybe Leif to get an assist xD

Might be a bad idea, and Ipswich concede 4 haha, but I like the punt. No one else is gonna play him.

If you trust Saka, Foden, Isak, Watkins for captaincy, this is a team I like, a lot.

    Saka Foden Gordon Bowen
    Watkins Isak Solanke

    Bentley Rogers Castagne Barco

Ill give you devils advocate advice

This is a great team but again more so week 6 onwards

White i really like and recently removed from my team - Fixtures and i want to see if Arteta plays Timber there

Saka + Foden wont play week 1 id imagine, subs at best
Gordon im not super hot on , multiple reports today he almost signed for Liverpool during the Euro's and the medical was set up. Gordon was up to move. Howe mentioned it today, so im not sure on his current state of mind

Watkins can wait till week 3, again late back from Euros

Id try to fill the team with well rested players with good time together for pre-season

White i like for this reason
      Odegaard, Forest, spurs players, Salah
      Haaland Isak

        Saka Gordon Bowen CHO

Too much gamble with garnacho,Nkunku & Rogers. Risk worth of 18 mil which is around 22% of your starting squad value.

Lowest Score Wins leagues are back!

Pick your team using your entire budget then ‘set it and forget it’, with no transfers, chips, etc. used during the season. Lowest score wins!

    Classic: https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/auto-join/i46foq
    H2H: https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/auto-join/cynn5t

The rules are simple but bear repeating in relative depth:
    1. Use your entire budget to pick your team. You must have 0 left to spend when the season begins.
    2. Do not make any transfers once the season begins.
    3. Do not use any chips during the season.
    4. At the end of the season, the team at the bottom of the table (having correctly followed all rules) wins.
