With the new EFL season kicking off imminently, Fantasy managers face the crucial decision of who to captain in Gameweek 1. Here we assess the best Fantasy EFL Gameweek 1 captaincy candidates.

Birmingham City’s new talisman Alfie May is currently leading the race but faces stiff competition with assets from Luton Town, Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United.

We’ll identify the top Fantasy assets for the opening weekend, considering captain poll results in the process.

Stay tuned for team reveal articles before tomorrow’s 20:00 BST deadline.

And for everything else you might need, check out our Gameweek 1 page and our pre-season tab.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

% of votes in the Captain poll
Alfie May (Birmingham City) 16%
Carlton Morris (Luton Town) 10%
Sammie Szmodics (Blackburn Rovers) 9%
Ethan Ampadu
Georginio Rutter (Leeds United)
6%
Anel Ahmedhodzic (Sheffield United)5%

Alfie May

Claiming 16% of the votes, Alfie May is the runaway leader of our maiden 2024/25 captain poll.

Owned by over 31% of EFL managers, Birmingham City’s marksman is hoping to set the league alight under Chris Davies this season.

May, the 23-goal Sky Bet League One Golden Boot winner for Charlton last season, joined Birmingham City this summer. May started slowly last season but scored five goals in three games after a blank opening three.

All eyes will be on St Andrew’s as Birmingham City entertain Reading in a blockbuster opening-day clash. With the Bluenose faithful roaring them on, the squad looks to deliver a memorable performance.

Faith in May’s teammates is fairly limited. Ryan Allsop (G, 11.8%), Ethan Laird (D, 7.6%) and Siriki Dembélé (M, 4.8%) are the only three other Bluenose stars to have notable ownership. Allsop is the second most-owned Birmingham City player, but Davies’ starting goalkeeper is undecided. Competition with Peacock-Farrell for the number one spot is fierce.

Carlton Morris

Best Fantasy EFL Captains Gameweek 1

Luton Town’s Carlton Morris (10%) leads the chasing pack, backed by one in ten of our users. Confidence is high in Edwards’ attacking options after their solid Premier League campaign.

Morris led Luton’s attack last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals and contributing to 15 returns in 38 appearances. The talisman recorded the club’s highest tally in Fantasy last season with 146 points. Morris also hasn’t dropped the pace and scored two goals across pre-season matches.

Luton Town host fellow promotion candidates Burnley at Kenilworth Road on the opening day. Last season, the Clarets had the upper hand on Luton, picking up four points against them last season. Despite this, Morris did score the opener at Turf Moor in their 1-1 draw.

Despite leading Luton’s attack, Morris’ strike partner Elijah Adebayo has over 8% ownership. Additionally, goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski has been selected by 2.5% of managers for the opening day.

Sammie Szmodics

Best Fantasy EFL Captains Gameweek 1 1

Interest in Blackburn Rovers key midfielder Sammie Szmodics remains high despite transfer speculation. Just behind Morris, Szmodics has been selected by 9% of Fantasy EFL managers to captain their side. Szmodics, the Championship Golden Boot winner with 27 goals and four assists in 44 games, is the most popular player in the game at 57% ownership. Taking on newly-promoted Derby County at Ewood Park, Rovers will be hoping to secure three points and continue their strong end to the 2023/24 campaign, which included a 0-2 away victory at Leicester City to dampen their promotion celebrations on the final day.

Ethan Ampadu and Georginio Rutter

Daniel Farke’s Leeds United welcome newly promoted Portsmouth to Elland Road, with Ethan Ampadu (38%) and Georginio Rutter (4.4%) the stand-out options. Both have been backed by 6% of voters to take the armband for the opening day, hoping to bounce back from their heart-breaking playoff final loss against Southampton. Ampadu’s unexpectedly high ownership can likely be attributed to his incorrect defensive classification. Many Fantasy managers have recognised his midfield potential and opted to capitalise on this out-of-position gem.

Anel Ahmedhodzic

A differential for Gameweek 1, Anel Ahmedhodzic has been backed by 5% of voters to wear the armband and haul this weekend, as Sheffield United travel to Deepdale, taking on Preston North End. The second highest selected Blades player at 20.5%, just behind Callum O’Hare (21.1%), managers will be hoping Wilder can rediscover their strong defensive form – keeping 19 clean sheets in the 2022/23 season. The 25-year-old defender scored twice last season for the Blades, helping them keep just one clean sheet throughout the campaign in 29 appearances.

Have Your Say

Given the vast pool of over 1,000 players on Fantasy EFL, our “other” captaincy pick proved surprisingly popular, garnering 17% of the votes. Who’s your Fantasy EFL Gameweek 1 captain? Let us know in the comments!

Why no Cold Palmer in any of these drafts? Surely a great differential given the easy Chelsea fixtures after GW1 or am I missing something?

I think Solanke at Spurs could be really good though he may not be on pens with Son there.

Potential decision over Haaland/Pedro/Bruno vs Walker/Solanke/Salah at exactly the same price. .

Todibo seems to be a massive step up in quality over Zouma and in a Lopetegui defensive setup.

This increases Areola's appeal as 4.5m GK imo

Starting to think no Haaland is the way to start the season... Don't really like the sacrifices you need to make to have both Salah and Haaland and I rate the Egyptian higher. How does this look? Palmer + MGW could also be Son + Nkunku + 0.5m

    Flekken
    TAA Gvardiol Mykolenko
    Salah Palmer Saka Eze MGW
    Isak Muniz

    4.0; Konsa, Harwood, Jebbison

      Like the Palmer pick.
But consider going both Salah and Haaland, see reason below, similar draft as you.

      1. aapoman
        • 12 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Yeah I get the reasoning behind starting with both. I'm also pondering a draft where I could get Haaland with 2 moves (downgrade a mid + upgrade a fwd) just in case going without Haaland goes horribly wrong. Could change my mind and start with both when the deadline comes so I've not ruled that out either.

Hi lads, hope you had a great summer and are ready for a new FPL season!

Here's my first RMT, any input?
Starting with Bobb the first weeks and downgrading/upgrading after that.
Also thinnk it's safest to start with both Haaland and Salah, easier to downgrade one if he doesn't deliver, than choosing the wrong one and upgrade.

    Flekken
    Andersen, Gvardiol, Konsa
    Salah, Bobb, Gordon, Salah, Eze
    Haaland, Muniz, Isak

    Subs: Turner, Nkuku, Mykolenko, Barco

One thing to note is this WHU GK double may prevent you having 2 outfield options from WHU down the line or force a transfer on sub GK to open the spot up (Bowen/Kudus/Fullkrug)

    B) Haaland - Odegaard - Gordon - Bowen

Gabriel owners had that early season stress last year seeing him benched even though it was only for a brief period. Saliba was stress free but equally solid options.

After taking in the Solanke transfer news, I don't think I'll be going with Solanke in GW1.

    Few reasons why:
    - I don't think he starts in GW1 as there are only 10 days until Spurs first league game and ti understand Angeball
    - he actually might be carrying a minor injury (also could be lying to avoid game time and push through the transfer)
    - I'll only want Spurs attackers for the first 2 GWs so may as well start with Son then move to Saka/Palmer/Foden later

I don't agree with the 3rd point although I myself would rather prefer going for a Son than a Solanke as of now. I honestly don't see Solanke starting GW1.

Probably not clear with the 3rd point.

Son with a full preseason and covers the 10m price bracket. Allows me to pivot to Saka/Foden/Palmer later when up to speed. I can pivot from GW3 onwards

Kulusevski's been doing well up front in preseason too, so it's not like they're desperate to chuck him in. Probably gets a late sub GW1, then a full start GW2. Think his move ruins every other Spurs asset really.

Yeah said the Solanke signing has a knock on effect on the main Spurs options

Only thing is Solanke would probably lose pens to Son, but that's probably neither here nor there with his record (missed 2 out of the last 6)

Unfortunately Trippier staying reduces Livramento xMins. May start GW1 but the issue is beyond that GW

I expect the Newcastle defence to improve this season. Pope available, new signings at CB, Hall understanding LB role better and no Europe should all improve the defence imo

My first RMT for the season
    Henderson 4.0
    Saliba Gvardiol Porro Barco Faes
    Salah Son Saka Eze Gordon
    Isak Muniz Ladapo

Weak bench but happy to roll with that early and plan to WC either GW 4 or 6. Never had Haaland and happy to go against. If Foden looks like starting GW 1, I will likely bring him in for Saka. Only other change is potentially Saliba to a Liverpool defender.

Gordon might not start. But the core of the team is good.

I'd probably downgrade Gordon and use the money on upgrading Muniz > Havertz/Solanke if he goes to TOT.

Will be interesting to see if Gordon starts in one of the friendlies tonight or tomorrow. If he's in the same lineup as Isak, it could mean he starts GW1.

Howe used a mix and match approach to the back to back home friendlies last year. Only the front three of Gordon, Isak and Miggy in one match was indicative of the line up in GW1. That was last season though.

Cheers for the Toon info team, very interesting. I assumed Gordon was a lock for GW1 but good to know that. Opens up other options either upgrade or downgrade with some tinkering. Appreciate it

He only came back to training this week. Gordon was probably the fittest player in the team last season and Barnes hasn't looked very good in preseason, so maybe Gordon starts GW1 despite not much of a preseason.

Would they risk Gordon if a deal with Liverpool is in the works? Howe said players need to go for FFP so an injury could scupper a big sale,

    I'm thinking about Zinchenko.

I think he could be a good risk to take. He's very good when he starts. Timber seems injured, Calafiori still getting acclimated. Is it crazy to do it? It's him or Munoz but Henderson is my keeper atm and a Palace double up with those fixtures doesn't feel quite right.

Don’t rate Zinchenko at all. Painfully slow these days and often caught out of position. I doubt he will be starting for Arsenal even to start the season.

Timber and Calafiori should both be back at the weekend, they aren’t injured, they are just being managed in training.

One had an ACL, the other had a busy week, pretty certain both will be available for GW1.

It’s crazy if you’re planning to build a bank of transfer early

Timber is managing a minor foot issue but shouldn't be fine like you said

Arteta on Timber: “He had a little discomfort in his foot the last few days. After the time he has been out, we did not want to take any risks.”

Yes, they are managing his workload and Arteta said this at the start of pre season.

I’m sure they are building him to be ready for the season rather than risk over doing it in pre season, he played games on the tour
