How to play UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy 2024/25

The UEFA Champions League (UCL) may be getting a divisive revamp this season but the official Fantasy game is the same old format we know and love.

And it’s now live for the 2024/25 season!

You can dive in right now to start your team tinkering, as unlimited transfers are allowed before play starts.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

There will be as-yet-unannounced prizes on offer in this free-to-play Fantasy game. In the past, these have ranged from UEFA Champions League final tickets to Playstation 5s and replica shirts.

We’ll be bringing you a lot more content on this game throughout the season, with regular articles ahead of each Matchday.

There is also lots more UCL Fantasy content over on our sister website, Fantasy Football Community.

In this introductory piece, we’ll talk you through the basics of the game.

BRIEF RULES

To quickly summarise the game: UCL Fantasy managers get €100m to spend on a squad of 15 players. They earn points based on how they perform in the Champions League.

Anyone who has played Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will have no trouble picking the game up, as many of the rules are exactly the same or very similar:

  • An initial budget of €100m (which rises to €105m from the round of 16)
  • Pick a squad of 15 players – two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders, three forwards
  • Select a starting XI in a valid formation for every Matchday
  • Select a captain who earns double points
  • Make free transfers between matchdays

Those are the fundamentals but there are one or two quirks of the game that require a bit of explaining, which we will cover below.

DIFFERENCES TO FPL

NUMBER OF PLAYERS PER CLUB

Initially, the maximum number of players you can own per club is the same as FPL: three. However, this increases as the tournament progresses:

StageMax. players per club
League phase3
Knockout round play-offs4
Round of 164
Quarter-finals5
Semi-finals6
Final8
MANUAL SUBSTITUTIONS

Firstly, as well as autosubs that replace non-playing names of your starting XI, UCL Fantasy also allows manual substitutions within a Matchday.

Between the end of one night (eg Tuesday) and the start of another (eg Wednesday) within that Matchday, a maximum of four players can be switched for ones on your bench who have yet to play.

For example, if Ollie Watkins (€7.5m) disappoints on the Tuesday of Matchday 1, you can replace him with a substitute who’ll play on Wednesday or Thursday.

The only instance in which you can’t sub a player off is if he’s received a red card.

CAPTAINCY SWITCHING

Similarly, a poor choice of captain can easily be corrected by changing it to someone from the second (or third!) night. This new captain will be the only one whose points get doubled.

TRANSFERS AND CHIPS

Unlike in FPL, each Matchday deadline goes right up until the first kick-off of night one. It allows managers to wait until team news before using their free transfers.

During the group stage, each manager gets two of them, plus a maximum of one that’s rolled over from before. However, additional ones cost four points.

MatchdayNumber of free transfers
Before league phaseUnlimited
During league phase2 per matchday
Before knockout round play-offsUnlimited

Before round of 16Unlimited
Before round of 16 second leg3
Before quarter-finals5
Before quarter-finals second leg3
Before semi-finals5

CHIPS

Furthermore, there is a pair of chips that can be used once:

  • Wildcard: This is just like in FPL – a chance to change the whole squad for free.
  • Limitless: Like the Free Hit chip but with an unlimited budget.

SCORING SYSTEM

Instead of bonus points, UCL Fantasy awards three to ‘Player of the Match’.

As well as the standard points for goals, assists, clean sheets, cards and appearances, there is an extra one given to goals from outside the box and whenever a player makes three ball recoveries:

    2 FT & 0.4m ITB

    Henderson
    Saliba - Porro - Konsa
    Saka - Jota - Mitoma - Nkunku
    Haaland - Havertz - Isak

    Turner - Burn - Barco - Winks

    Porro + Nkunku > Lewis + Mbuemo

I like the moves on paper but the incoming players have some horrible fixtures coming up. Would also look to get Porro back in after

Other option would be to bring in Onana instead of Mbuemo, downgrade Isak next week and bring Salah in for Jota

Simplest play would be Burn > Lewis and roll FT

Interesting info on the number of pens after 3GWs compared to previous seasons.

    Pens after GW3:
    19/20 - 8
    20/21 -20
    21/22 - 9
    22/23 - 7
    23/24 - 12
    24/25 - 2

I'm surprised VAR didn't look at the challenge on Isak in the match against Spurs. Sky commentary saying that the defender kicking Isak's standing leg wasn't sufficient to bring him down was odd.

To me, it looked like there was enough contact from the spurs player to Isak's left foot

I was wondering about this having selected Salah, Isak and Mbeumo with this in mind!

Interesting data thanks for sharing, doesn’t look like just simple variance and hand balls will have big negative impact

Apparently there is data titled "contentious decisions" available from Scout which may cover that like the Isak potential pen mentioned above.

meh, will help Darwin but Slot obviously happy with Jota or he would've given Darwin more game time by now. they've just won the first 3 matches by aggregate 7-0, Jota isnt going to not be first choice any time soon

cant predict potential restings though, if you're concerned about that (and for Diaz, would argue Gakpo is a much better LW than Darwin ST atm) then get Salah and make savings elsewhere. But you can't be playing a 4.5mid and 4.5 defender every week to accomodate him.

so long term thinking definitely want Palmer and Saka.

so it comes down to Salah + 2.5-ish mil or Haaland. With Haaland its perma captain, with Salah it will go round the 3 premiums. I know this was a big dilemma to start the season, but now what are people thinking? Salah wins out with the 2.5 extra?

    Robbo / Lewis/ Mazroui / robinson / Nedeljokiv 4.0

stick with s + m. looks good, not sure Martinez worth it tbh though, been a long time since Villa's defence has looked solid and CL demands about to kick in. Defence is abit weak, argument to be made something like Dunk/Lewis/Mazrouri/Robinson/Munoz and rotate would get more points for 0.5 less.

Like Haaland and Salah with Saka/Palmer is such sacrifices elsewhere (Haaland and Salah aren't going to maintain 14ppg obv), like being TAA-less would not be ideal imo as well. But it does look decent if you want those 3 premiums

I think he was a decent shout before we knew Man U is still shiite…

Bruno had one good season, don’t think people remember he was shiite last season (7 goals and 7 assist is mid table 5.5-6m asset numbers)

yeah fair. i tried to do the rough numbers since Mainoo came into the side and gave Bruno some more attacking freedom and he was around 5.5 ppg for the last 14-15 matches of the season

thought he could carry it on, nice set and forget with a player who rarely misses a minute, let alone a match. but erm, did not turn out as expected haha

Those numbers for last season are wrong. 10 goals, 9 assists which is his second best season for goal involvement. One of the big reasons for his points drop from the season prior was United not keeping clean sheets when they'd been the best (or one of) defence in the league I think in 2022/23. The season you are talking about him posting big numbers which you're benchmarking him on he was a 12m asset

I’d suggest playing the long game. Look at the way the fixtures turn, and decide on the best player to bring in each GW, if even that. Plan perhaps 5 GWs ahead? The serious players have probably mapped out half the season.

I do understand the temptation FWIW 🙂

He's only 5m remember, so for that amount he's pure gold if he continues like this, the return will come.

          Can't expect too much.

Bruno as an example had 7 goals and 7 assists last season and is 8.5m, so if Rogers get half the returns he's still a good enabler

Number wise he’s more or less the same as ESR but plays more mins, I just don’t see a negative to him with those fixs if you’re on a WC with ESR.

He’s created more chances than him (5-0) had 1 more shot on goal & created 2 big chances to his 0.

Think for 5m he’s probably performing as expected

He's actually performing the same as a 4.5m fodder but he's been unlucky. How much more you should expect from a 5m midfielder to a 4.5m one is open to debate. He's probably the best 5m outfield asset in the game isn't he? It is what it is.

It’s just something you have to accept & play the fixs with if you want certain assets, Carvalho is an easy exit route once he gets into their team, he would at least offer some potential for returns.

Rogers seems like one those where they are a good player but not a good fantasy asset, saying that, if Watkins puts one chance away we probably aren’t talking now.

            Isn't Carvalho a winger with a skillset of a DM ?

He's never been dangerous in front of goal has he?

            I might be wrong

9 goals & 2 assists in 20 games at Hull, don’t sound like a DM to me.

Thanks the Update REDLIGHTNING. I am looking forward to competing in this competition again even though I got relegated to League 5 last season. This competition helps to keep me motivated for all of the FPL season. Please pass on my gratitude to everyone who organises this fantastic League.

It should be fun trying to fit 2560 relegated teams into the three Divisions in League 10 next year.

Such a huge effort, much appreciated. Hoping to go 3/3 for promotions - thankfully it's a long season as not a great start

Thanks for organising yet again. Was a bit surprised tho having been relegated from League 8 last season to find myself back in League 8 ( Div 65) this season. Expecting to be fined for cheating (case to be heard after Man City's lol)

        I don't organise the Head-to-Head Leagues.
MIR and Geoff restarted them in 2019, with Mat responsible for all the technical work in automating them.
TopMarx has also been involved, but Lord and myself just report on them in our Community Articles.

I expect that some of those who finished in relegation positions will have avoided relegation because of the need to fill vacancies caused by dropouts.

Keep Gordon or take a hit for Eze?

Keep for sure, just because Newcastle hasn't lit up the PL the first 3 games he's not a bad asset

You know Gordon will score and Eze will blank if you do this...
At least this always happens when I do this kind of moves.

      Patience

Yeah I think so, could start Porro over Munoz. I can see him getting something vs the goons

If I have already done a -4 for gw 4 but now decide to WC.. I take it my -4 gets wiped out and I’m free to wc without the -4.

On WC after a bad start... what do you think about the below, sacrificing too much to have the big boys?

    Henderson
    TAA Robinson Konsa
    Salah Palmer Semenyo Rogers
    Haaland Havertz Pedro
    (Vlad Greaves Keane Sangare)
