The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign begins this week – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’ll have plenty of UCL Fantasy coverage in preparation for the big kick-off, plus regular articles throughout the season.

Here, our European football contributor Crisk goes through some of the most appealing defensive picks.

BEST CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DEFENDERS

The Scout Squad: Our best players for FPL Gameweek 3

Trent Alexander-Arnold (€6.0m)

In Fantasy Premier League (FPL), we sometimes argue whether Alexander-Arnold’s price is lower than it should be.

Although UCL Fantasy doesn’t have a similar Bonus Points System (BPS), the Liverpool star’s ceiling remains high enough to justify such pricing.

Liverpool had started the season well, only conceding their first goal in Gameweek 4.

The Reds’ run of UCL fixtures, against mostly offensive teams, also perhaps elevates the prospect of potential attacking returns, with fewer low blocks to bypass.

Alexander-Arnold has almost double the volume of expected goal involvment (xGI) as any other Premier League defender this season:

Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.5m)

Useful (or useless) piece of information time: Before he got crocked last December, Bryan Mbeumo played 12 games against teams who eventually finished out with the Top 4 and scored 7 goals. Not unexpectedly, he never quite recovered that form after more than 3 months out injured but he's returned this season and scored 3 goals in his 2 games against teams who won't be playing in the Champions League next year. Combining both samples, that's 10 goals in 14 games when he's not being playing against City, Liverpool, Arsenal or Villa. Between now and Boxing Day, Brentford conveniently play 14 games and only one of them is against these four sides (avl). That 7.1m outlay has the potential for bid dividends hasn't it?

    Haaland Wissa Pedro

    2FT 0.2 ITB

    1. Saka and Wissa to Rogers and Watkins
    2. Saka and Jota to Salah and Rogers
    3. Just hold

Obviously going to wait til after midweek to make a final decision but what would you do here?

Wat to do with Rogers and Minteh??

I benched Esr to play both of them and Mateta.

13pts frm Mateta was very useful tho.

You hold them for their good fixture run then reassess no point dumping or benching players midway through because they blanked it could be a different story next week

GW4 transfers for hits did not go to plan then!

    WHat to do?

    A. Roll
    B. Johnson > A playing 4M defender

    Hendersen
    Gabriel / Munoz / Dunk
    Salah / Palmer / Jota / Rogers / Eze
    Pedro / Haaland

    Fab | Johnson | Barco | Cannon

Not after Frank’s yesterday: « “It could be a shorter one or it could be a longer one, I actually have no clue. We need to assess him tomorrow.

“A reckless tackle, I thought, from Kovačić, just going through the man, from behind him. I know it’s probably not a red card, but it’s frustrating that he’s injured.” – Thomas Frank on Yoane Wissa

The Bees, like Brighton, have a midweek cup tie to come. Hopefully, we’ll get more information from Thomas Frank on Wissa’s injury then.»

Wait and see. You’d think he plays further forward with Partey and Jorginho holding, if he’s in midfield.

    3. Count of Monte Hristo
      • 12 Years
      1 year, 5 months ago

Many were saying to avoid him all summer because he will play in midfield. If he plays in midfield today out of necessity does that mean he won’t get into attacking positions? Absolutely not. Is he playing against a team who don’t take pride in clean sheets and are very open at the back? Absolutely. He is a great FPL asset wherever he plays.

      1. _Freddo

He played in MF against Leverkusen and got 2 assists and a goal.

He’s harshly judged by the start of last season when he had zero confidence, even in that game at home to Villa which Arsenal lost (when he went back into MF) he still got a couple of big chances that he should have scored.

If he moves back into MF, he’ll still be the mid who is to join the attack.

Wish I'd known this before doing Nkunku to Eze yesterday 🙁

Oliver Glasner asked if Mateta is his 'usual' penalty taker: "Yes, it's...we have two. We always talk about it before.

"It's JP and Eberechi Eze. Then I always say, 'you decide'..."

      "...'on the pitch. Talk together'.

      1. Moderately content penguin
        • 7 Years

Yes but Eze is completely without ego and Mateta has a very sizeable one and is as goal hungry a forward as you care to imagine and stepped up to take a penalty kick in the last seconds of the Olympic final. Only going to be one winner in that discussion 9 times of 10.

Eze has taken two pens in all his time at Palace - once when Zaha couldn't stop missing and once last season when there was no one else much on the pitch. Yes he can take pens but ....

In some senses Mateta is becoming the Palace talisman - much the biggest character in the team (witness his antics cheering the team on when subbed v Chelsea).

  19. Moderately content penguin

In his last 9 home games Mateta has had 14 shots on target and scored 13 goals or something very close.

Watkins, Havertz and Isak all clearly higher tariff but the really great thing about Palace is that they will never qualify for the CL.

This is nearly the perfect argument here for perma Mateta - just Isak to explain away now. Crap away do?

Fair enough if the date hasn't been updated. I wouldn't have read much into the ordering anyway given it's definitely not specified that ordering = order of takers. (Even though the rest may seem that way.)

OK, so I'm not the brightest bulb, etc., but have only just noticed that Duran has scored in 3/4 games and only played between 20-29 minutes in each. Surely he's got to start more, hasn't he? Muniz is #1 for out the door today, not necessarily considering Duran but he could hardly do worse. Then again, a strategically placed ukulele would probably score more than Muniz at the moment.

I’d prefer that, feel stupid for selling Saka to Foden

37 Porro left. Hope can cling on in LMS. Saka and Isak out -4 looking like disaster. Early trade punishment

      37 Isak Gordon Havertz.

      Reasonably happy with no Haaland.

Is Ben Johnson out of the first xi for Ipswich now or will he still start the odd game? is it tactical reasons he hasn't been playing?

Looked very lively on the MOTD highlights yesterday. End product still an issue but there's not many options at £5m.

Actually have esr as well, double up might be a bit much. Amad maybe? Would rotate him with esr and Rogers

Think 3 players in that price bracket is too much. There are good options in the 6,5-7,5 price bracket as well as cheap forwards

Might have to downgrade palmer for that. Palmer soucek > Watkins mbeumo maybe.

It was actually Traore's worst match of the season. I wouldn't see that performance as a positive for him.

Really regret bringing in Eze yesterday. It was my own stupid fault for listening to Zoph when he said Eze was the ultimate "glue guy".

He did that for the majority of last season and the results were remarkably similar. Especially at the start of the season!

We have to readjust and realised Mateta has levelled up.

I think my WC4 is going to completely backfire :/

    Gvardiol (1) > Pau (1)
    Jota (1) > Semenyo (1)
    Smith Rowe (7) > Palmer (3)
    Saka (?) > Salah (2)
    Isak (?) > Pedro (0)

Already at -4 and that's before Saka & Isak's points from today
