Manchester United’s first five results in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim have been a mixed bag.

The Red Devils drew their first match and won big in their second, then losing twice on the trot before snatching a crucial derby victory last time out.

In between, there have been two UEFA Europa League successes and one EFL Cup loss.

With more appealing fixtures on the horizon, we’ve taken a look at some of the key stats from those five matches – both overall and on a Gameweek-by-Gameweek basis – as well as assessing their best players from an FPL standpoint.

THE BIG PICTURE + BEFORE AND AFTER

As mentioned above, United have ended their first five league matches under the new boss with the following record:

Played5
Won2
Drawn1
Lost2
Scored9
Conceded7
Clean sheets1

They were 10th in the league following a 3-0 win in the Gameweek prior to Amorim’s opening match, but now sit 13th ahead of Gameweek 17.

Their nine goals in the five matches since, at a rate of 1.8 goals per 90, trumps their 1.1 per 90 (12 goals in 11) under Erik Ten Hag and then Ruud van Nistelrooy at the beginning of the season. That figure is admittedly a little skewed by a Gameweek 13’s 4-0 win over Everton, their biggest victory so far.

Meanwhile, seven goals conceded (1.4 per 90) works out to a slightly worse defensive rating than under previous management. A dozen goals were allowed in those first 11 matches.

United also had five clean sheets before Amorim took charge but only one (at home against a goal shy Everton) since then.

All in all, those stats suggest the team may be playing more freely but taking their time to adapt to Amorim’s new defensive set-up, which features lines up three centre-backs in between two wing-backs.

It’s still very, very early days of course – and we’re talking a very small sample here.

ATTACKING STATS

Above: Man Utd’s attacking stats before Ruben Amorim’s arrival (left) and after (right)

Dig a little deeper and you’ll see Amorim’s men have fired off 54 attempts, which is among the lowest tallies in the league and also a worse rate per 90 (10.8 versus 14) than before.

The percentage of those attempts that are big chances, though, has remained about the same – suggesting perhaps that the players are creating better chances and shooting more selectively, resulting in a better goal conversion rate.

This is further evidenced by an ever so slightly worse minutes per chance figure and a notably worse minutes per xG figure in their last five compared to their opening 11 fixtures, but a higher proportion of their total shots being on target.

Related to that last stat, United are fifth in the league for both shot accuracy and goal conversion under Amorim. they were previously fourth for the former but fourth-worst for the latter.

Their xG delta – that is, the difference between their expected goals and their actual number of goals scored – has also changed significantly for the better: up to +3.23, which is third top in the division, compared to -5.52, which was second-worst.

DEFENSIVE STATS

Above: Man Utd’s defensive stats before Ruben Amorim’s arrival (left) and after (right)

Defensively, United were massively outperforming on their expected goals conceded (xGC), with a league-leading delta of -5.14, and have since regressed to about the mean, having conceded seven times from an xGC of 6.12 under Amorim.

They’ve also allowed 54 shots, 20 of them on target, across these five matches, compared to 123 and 40 previously. That’s not far off a similar rate.

An interesting bonus stat is that United’s discipline when measured by the number of yellow and red cards they’ve been shown since Amorim arrived is the best in the league, where previously they were among the worst.

MATCH BY MATCH

Gameweek 12

Marcus Rashford (£6.8m) started out of position (OOP) in Amorim’s first match, leading the line and opening the scoring within minutes with what proved to be his only shot.

The StatsBomb graphic below shows the average positions of United’s starting XI, which had Amad (£5.2m) and Diogo Dalot (£5.2m) as the wing-backs of choice.

Amad grabbed what was then his second assist in as many matches, had two shots and lasted the full 90, while Rashford was withdrawn just after the hour mark. Alejandro Garnacho (£6.2m) lasted slightly longer, while Jonny Evans (£4.4m) started on the left of the back three but was replaced by Luke Shaw (£4.9m) – who has since succumbed to another injury – after 55 minutes.

United’s xG in this was just 0.80, almost exactly half that of their opponents. Bruno Fernandes (£8.4m) was his side’s top overall attacking threat, with three shots and 0.48 xGI.

    Final WC dilemma:

    A - Henderson & Wood
    B - Allison & Raul

Raul has minute issues but has a longish run of glorious fixtures. Wood has so so fixtures. Allisson has a DGW coming up but Pool defence isn't as watertight without Konate. I'll play Munoz sometimes which would mean a Palace and Arsenal double up.

    Fabianski
    Gabriel - Timber - Robinson
    Salah - Saka - Palmer - Amad
    Isak - Jackson - XXX

    XXX - Enzo - Munoz - O'Shea

    1. The Iceman
      • 3 Years

A - also when the time comes for a DGW there will be better options than Alisson for less (Konate).

      1. Jet5605
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 3 months ago

Yeah I'm not a fan of planning for a DGW that is quite far away and Allison is expensive. Raul has great fixtures but he has burned me badly this season.

I still think you underestimate Liverpool's defence. They have played 4 games without Konate. In those games they kept 2 clean sheets (M. City and Girona) and the other two (Fulham and Newcastle) were against teams that scored against the infamous Arsenal defence as well. Plus Konate should be back in a couple of weeks.

      1. Jet5605
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 3 months ago

Yeah fair enough. I just feel that Raul is a transfer out waiting to happen if he doesn't produce in the next four. I could downgrade him to a 4.5 and get Konate when he's back. It's a toughie.

        1. Captain Mal
          • 1 Year
          1 year, 3 months ago

Do you think Raul will lose his spot in the starting eleven? That would be the only reason to sell him I think. Otherwise he is a cheap 8th attacker with good value.

            • 11 Years

Not permanently but I do think Muniz will start one or two of the upcoming easier games. I think Silva rates Raul's all round game but he's basically a 70 minute striker.

Enzo usually plays more centrally but will start every game so might be safer if you don't have an 8th attacker.

Great piece full of interesting starts and though provoking information. Scrolled down looking forward to the discussion it should provoke and the first three comments are simple minded "should I pick option A or be here'?

Every single article, every single time.

If the article is only available to members why is commenting on it available for any halfwit with an internet connection? Give them all one place to congregate, a bit like MAGA has done for the hard of thinking politically, and let them A or B, GTG and RMT each other into oblivion.

In the US and UK we have broken political systems where we are given a menu of two terrible options. It's like having to choose between a turd sandwich or a dung panini.

It's easy to manipulate the electorate in countries like America - all you need is sufficient control of the media/social media and you pedal your campaign on immigration, the economy and in Kamala's case abortion. The UK is similar - it's all about immigration and the economy. If there isn't an enemy you create one and that is usually foreigners.

Have you realised yet that democracy is a fallacy, it doesn't exist? It's just a front behind which the wealthy few can have their way, as they have always done.

These terms for government systems originated in Plato's "Republic" and democracy - which people generally talk about as the ideal political system - was the second bottom on his list (and that was from an Athenian, where democracy first appeared). The only thing he preferred democracy to was tyranny.

Churchill had it right when he said "the best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter".

That is true apart from when there is a big anti establishment movement which can cause the occasional upset e.g. Brexit which was basically a protest vote that wasn't meant to happen. Even Boris Johnson was shocked when he won.

But generally most elections in the west are bought and just take place to create the illusion that the people decide who their leaders are which isn't true. The billions spent in the US on ground and ad campaigns just line the pockets of the friends of those in high places. There is very little difference between Putin and his oligarchs and how it really is in the west.

Currently benching Jackson out of this lot.

    Saka (cry)
    M.Salah (tot)
    Palmer (eve)
    Mbeumo (NFO)
    Amad (BOU)
    Isak (ips)
    Raúl (SOU)
    N.Jackson (eve)

    Right decision?

Raul. Not going to play 90 and also Muniz played great last week so might get the start

Just brought him in and if I'm not going to play him for Saints at home then I'll never play him. I will be highly surprised if Muniz gets the start, even if he did score. Expecting Raul to get at least an hour against a Saints team in a mess.

Played great is a bit of a stretch imo, 68th mins sub and scored from his only shot. Didn't do much apart from that goal

Yeah not keen on benching Mbeumo. Could be mid-streak and very dangerous at home. Also nice differential these days.

Raul definitely in the benching conversation but unlikely for reasons above.

Your mistake was buying him in the first place and giving yourself this problem every week. I’d also bench him, but if you are still refusing to, then Jackson.

Did occur to me. Got greedy maybe. I do hate benching headaches but it seemed the way to go for now. There will usually be a more obvious one to bench just this week is a headscratcher. Can always ship him out if it proves a persistent problem. Jackson still most likely atm.

Why is Palmer so unpopular as a (C) shout this week?

Much better fixture and higher ceiling than Salah, unless I’m missing something?

      Everton away putting people off.

Last week it would have been a different answer.

I'm kinda tempted by Saka too.

Most people will go with Salah and his form and the Spurs defending. They're gifting goals like a few clubs playing it out from the keeper.

Why is away to Everton a "much better fixture" than away to Spurs?

How would you rank budget midfielders?

    1. Amad
    2. Iwobi
    3. Enzo
    4. Rogers

Rogers is posting strong stats and him and Enzo are all over pitch in terms of the heatmap.

Villa also have a break from the Champions League and a few home games coming up.

Amad offers budget savings and could be much more advanced now.

Is Iwobi the real talisman here, along with Fulham's decent fixtures?

Does Ismaïla Sarr merit consideration too?

      Long term
      Amad/Enzo
      Sarr
      Rogers
      Iwobi

      Short term
      Amad/Enzo
      Iwobi
      Sarr/Rogers

Something along those lines I think.

    Gabriel Mazraoui Hall RAN Faes

    Isak Jackson Pedro

    1FT; 0.0itb

Any opinion to the following idea is highly appreciated:

Robbo had a full week rest and considering he only played 20 mins against Fulham while Tsikmas played mid week, I'd say Robbo starts. Though, Robbo will have his minutes managed over Xmas schedule. Get off him after Spurs

    Fabianski (Henderson)
    Timber Robinson Porro (Johnson Harwood-Bellis)
    Saka Salah Johnson Palmer (Rogers)
    Isak Pedro Strand Larsen

    2 FT, £1.2m ITB

Pedro and potentially Strand Larsen or Porro seem obvious places to upgrade... any suggestions?

those arent really relevant as the first two were red cards in game and the 3rd one was a racial slur on international duty.
