With the next Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline on the way, we’re hearing from our panel of guest writers. Here, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman talks through his Gameweek 31 Wildcard.

This week I’m going to talk through my Gameweek 31 Wildcard team and outline my chip strategy for the remainder of the season.

There will invariably be some changes before the deadline, but after reading this piece, you should at least know which players I’m leaning towards.

CHIP STRATEGY

  • Gameweek 31: Wildcard
  • Gameweek 32: Bench Boost
  • Gameweek 33: Triple Captain
  • Gameweek 34: Free Hit

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to Bench Boost in Gameweek 32. It means I can target some nice differential picks from Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion, who face Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City respectively. I also don’t need to worry about my Newcastle United players in Gameweek 33, as the defenders can simply be moved to the bench.

Furthermore, it frees up Double Gameweek 33 for the Triple Captain chip, with Omar Marmoush (£7.5m) and Bukayo Saka (£10.3m) the two options currently under consideration:

  • Marmoush: eve + AVL
  • Saka: ips + CRY

The Free Hit chip will be played in Blank Gameweek 34, a pretty straightforward decision.

It isn’t a perfect strategy, because Gameweek 32 is sandwiched between important Champions League quarter-finals for Villa and Arsenal, but overall, I like the approach and am happy to give it a try.

GOALKEEPERS

David Raya (£5.5m) is my preferred ‘keeper, given Arsenal’s defensive solidity.

The Gunners will miss Gabriel Magalhaes (£6.4m), who requires surgery on the hamstring injury he picked up against Fulham, but Ben White (£6.1m) and Jurrien Timber (£5.6m) “have a chance” to play against Everton on Saturday, and I’d be far more concerned if William Saliba (£6.3m) was out, given his recovery pace.

The second spot is harder to decide on, but for now, I’ve opted for Bart Verbruggen (£4.5m). That ‘keeper combination should give me a solid fixture run right through until the end of the season.

DEFENDERS

Is anyone going for a Chelsea or Liverpool defender instead of Palace? Munoz points across those 4 feel almost weaker than their fixtures for 2?

Thoughts on this (very template) WC:

    Raya (Areola)
    Saliba Munoz Burn (Gvardiol, Konsa)
    Savinho Saka Murphy Salah (Sarr)
    Marmoush Mateta Isak

    0ITB

Haven’t decided on sub / playing order yet.

    Any thoughts on this welcome.

Was considering Ramsay over Savinho and Livro over Burn but city have the better double.

Not on WC but surely Harvey Barnes vs his old club is worth the punt?

I understand the minutes risk vs someone like Jacob Murphy but feel like it’s worth the potential extra transfer out when Gordon returns

Not sure. He blows very hot & cold.

I have him, but he really needs to score like 15 points this week for me to balance the risk of picking him over someone like Murphy who is pretty much nailed.

Its probably inevitable that I have to take Barnes out in the next 2, but, hopefully something happens and he keeps starting. If he doesn't haul this week, its a failed pick and waste of transfers. So I wont recommend it to anyone.

Perhaps a Barnes+Murphy double up like folks were doing with Sarr + Eze?

I’d easily hold Kluivert if he was fit. But lining up the Barnes punt with not many GWs left

Not sure that's wise this week. A lot feels Saka won't start especially on the forums. Thinking about it it makes a lot of sense that he' comes on to get a few more minutes before a start Vs Real..look at their fixtures. Assume he's playing the Real games surely he's managed after coming back from hammy surgery

WC32s aren't very popular on here (less than 5%), but sometimes it makes sense to go against the crowd. I've got a similar team and I've decided to postpone the wildcard until next week for the extra information. I got away with waiting last week and feel emboldened.

    Gabriel replacement?

    A: Saliba
    B: Milenkovic
    C: Dias
    D: Porro
    E: Other?

Cannot be NEW/CRY as I'm maxed out (Mateta, Sarr, Glasner). Nor it can't be Villa as i have Konsa & will be getting Rogers & another Villa attacker. Already have Gvardiol.

Much like everyone seeing this article not sure on the palace triple up now with Cucu possibly having a better fixture over one but I’m on WC too and wouldn’t mind some advice. Who’s the better choice:

    1) Cucu
    2) Munoz
    3) Konate (would be left with 1.3 to play with)
    4) Van Dijk (0.0 ITB)
    5) someone else

    Team is template WC

1 or 2, I agree with your sentiments about Palace. I doubt I get a third, already on Mateta and Munoz. I might buckle, but don't think so. They need to do good this week to persuade me.

Yeah I think its the DGW fever, like would you have palace player starting against city arsenal or Newcastle on a normal week, probably not. Currently thinking a Liverpool defender

        1. have you seen cyan
          • 6 Years

For sure. But it wont surprise me if people get lucky and our logic falls apart. As virgin said below it is a double double after all.

Personally 3 palace just complicates things for me in 34, I will probably end up on a hit to field 11 in 34 if I do get Sarr or Eze. I am using FH in 33 instead.

I have Alisson, got him a while back thinking I will have him from Pool and Gabriel from Arsenal. No gab now 🙁

Issue is not only are you taking a -4, but you'd also be missing out on Burns potential CS.

Tempted to go Frank and keep Burn and avoid a hit this week. Does have huge potential upside, and can then decide if I want to go Howe or Glasner for 32.
