We thought we’d have another fortnight before writing this article – but Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup run is over.

A shock round-of-16 exit at the hands of Al Hilal ended City’s involvement in the bloated 32-club competition early.

Having seen the Cityzens across four matches in the States, we thought we’d put together a few takeaways ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

But first: a round-up of the minutes played, goals scored and assists registered.

APPEARANCES, GOALS + ASSISTS

City Club World Cup

1. ‘PREDICT PEP’ STEPS UP A NOTCH

What's needed to win in FPL? Part 1: Composure 1

If you thought trying to second-guess Pep Guardiola last season was tricky, 2025/26 looks like a real headscratcher.

City took 27 players to the States, with all bar the half-fit John Stones and new third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli getting on the field. Of the 25 who did feature, Oscar Bobb was the only one who didn’t start a game.

No one made four starts, with Guardiola keen to rotate his squad after a long 2024/25 campaign and with temperatures soaring Stateside.

“We’re going to play new players and the next game, new players too. And the second half, too. So, I made the selection tomorrow on the line-up, thinking [about] the second half, because with these conditions, we are not ready to play the rhythm we are playing for 90 minutes.” – Pep Guardiola ahead of the Juventus game

We can whittle down some of these names, of course. Many of those we expect to be fringe/lesser-used players in 2025/26 featured against the minnows of Wydad and Al Ain before disappearing to the bench; we’re talking the likes of Bobb, Nico O’Reilly, Vitor Reis, Nico Gonzalez (the jury is out on him) and, maybe, Abdukodir Khusanov. Rico Lewis and Claudio Echeverri can probably be added to that group, too, but it was suspension and injury that saw their Club World Cup appearances restricted to one.

Injuries will happen; they did to a considerable extent in 2024/25. Some players may also leave, especially as Guardiola said in May that he doesn’t want a massive squad.

The City boss has plenty of choice for the time being, as the images below show.

If Aït-Nouri is 6m or less, he’s in my starting eleven.

They described Barry as Beto mark 2 only 5 years younger with the potential to improve.

That's roughly what his dad scored when he was at Villa. I think most were penalties though.

Someone's been editing his Wikipedia page...

"Born in France, Barry is of Guinean descent.[8] Thierno Hibbert Barry grew up a huge Evertonian and changed his name by deed pole in honour of his two favourite players. first thing he wants to do when in merseyside is backflip Van Dijk.

i would buy him for 6m or under, EFC have great fixtures. Plus, i just feel like he is the missing piece we need to finally crack the top ten. Pre season will be telling though.

Wirtz seems to be a 10 goals, 10 assists kind of player, kind of in the Rogers, Semenyo, Murphy, Diaz mould. Would 8.0m be a fair price for him?

Nup, 9m at least given the hype. 8-8.5m fairer though I agree.

Was thinking this. He does a lot of the dirty work off the ball, dropping deep etc. If Liverpool sign an out and out no.9, I'd rather go for them + Salah, but if they sign more of a Firmino type forward, like an Ekitike, I think I'd rather Wirtz, because he's probably going to be making runs into the box. Pre-season is going to be key.

22 according to Whoscored but that was in the Bundesliga and as we know players from that league invariably seem to have a problem translating their form into the EPL for some reason.

                  So not invariable then.

Could throw Gundogan, Aubameyang, Akanji, Haaland, Konate, Gravenberch, Marmoush, Lacroix, Gvardiol, Thiago and Mateta in too.

                  Looking quite variable to me.

The Juventus game pricked up my ears. City were making those trademark passes into the half spaces, then squaring across goal for a tap in. The hallmark City goal when they were good. Instantly made a note to start with Ait Nouri and Haaland because they're gonna cook.

But that Al Hilal game just highlighted how vulnerable they are when they play like that. I dunno what to make of City right now, but I trust Pep will find a solution over pre-season. Haaland and Salah's price will be key as to whether we can have both. If Ait Nouri is 6.0m it might be a gamble too far, but 5.5m and I'm probably in.

People relying on AI, following algorithms, or slavishly following multiple CCs who base their own decisions on the aforementioned AI and algorithms no doubt outperform my individual approach most of the time, but it does seem a boring way to play. Almost as bad as the nudist spammers who rely on the 'community' to make all their decisions for them while contributing little.

Whenever I saw Haaland, he was not just at the end of finishing the chances, he was also creating chances for his team mates. I think for the initial weeks, I will only be going with Haaland while the defense is settling itself.

In the great southern land the execrable Stan streaming service has just bought the rights to the EPL from telco Optus. To watch any games you have to subscribe to Stan for $15 a month, and then add Stan Sports streaming for an extra $12, making it $27 a month to watch games live at 1 or 2am in the morning!

To give you an idea as to just how execrable Stan is, they are leading promotions of the service with a show called ‘The Surfer’, featuring reluctant baldy Nicholas Cage!

I guess it’s youtube highlights for me from now on.

I’m going to ditch Optus too!

I gave up watching football live when Sky Sport took over EPL coverage in NZ and promptly doubled the cost of watching matches online compared to the previous service. Roughly double the fee compared to what you face in Oz now.

There are villages with a smaller population size than the Chelsea squad.

There's a reason Pep likes a small squad. I think having a handful of quality but versatile players is better than filling 4 dressing rooms. For that reason, I really like the signings of Cunha, and shirley Mbeumo soon. 62m is not a bad price in the current market for proven Premier League forwards. They'd certainly be better value than a 60m Pedro.

Delap and Gittens have potential but they're not title-winning quality yet. And does Pedro even start?

Wonder when all the players are going to leave City. Pep wanted a smaller squad and now seems to have a much bigger one.

The attacking options they have are just ridiculous.

Marmoush, Foden, Cherki, Doku, Haaland, Savinho, Bobb

Yeah, they'll shirley trim the fat over the summer. Maybe the likes of McAtee, Bobb, O'Reilly for pure profit, plus Grealish. Pep seems to like Echeverri, interested to see how he performs this season.

None of them will leave. That's 7 players for 4 attacking positions which is expected in squad competing at top end. It's players like Bernardo, McAtee Gundogan and Grealish that are more likely to go.

I think Neto was playing on the left out of necessity last season because Sancho was so bad. His best position is on the right. This is how I see it:

                      ........................Delap/Jackson...........................
                      ??? / Gittens - Palmer / Pedro - Neto / Madueke

Madueke could be Estevao. There's rumours of them selling Madueke, and Estevao is meant to be a superstar. The question mark on the left wing being a new signing. I imagine they're trying to get Rodrygo, but with Garnacho as a backup option.
