Among the 11 pre-season friendlies taking place on Saturday was Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to third-tier Reading.

The match at the Select Car Leasing Stadium (bring back Elm Park!) was Thomas Frank’s first game in charge of Spurs.

And there were new faces on show for the Lilywhites, including big-money signing Mohammed Kudus.

Here’s what we saw in Berkshire.

READING 0-2 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Lankshear, Vuskovic
  • Assists: Vuskovic, Kudus

KUDUS DEBUT

Anyone who saw Kudus going through the motions at West Ham United last season would have no doubt been wondering what on earth possessed Spurs to shell out north of £50m on the Ghana international.

But Saturday’s display at Reading was a reminder of why he was sought-after.

Boy, he was good – even if it was just against a League One side.

Introduced at half-time and used on the right flank, he was a big upgrade on Brennan Johnson, who floundered there in the first half.

Pacy, fleet-footed and strong on the ball, the highlight of his 45-minute showing was a superb bit of trickery on the wing (even if the ball may have gone out…) to set up Jamie Donley for a chance in the 78th minute.

Another one of his match-high four chances created was an assist for young centre-half Luka Vuskovic.

He was on set plays, too, with his corners on point. One of his deliveries was nodded on by Vuskovic for Will Lankshear to head in.

An encouraging debut.

“He was exciting to watch. He had four, five very good actions where you could see what he’s about. His pace, one-on-one skills, the way he can twist and turn going forward. That was a positive.” – Thomas Frank on Mohammed Kudus

UDOGIE + PORRO POSITIONING

Arguably the most eye-catching aspect of Frank’s first match at the helm was his use of full-backs.

Pedro Porro has been the go-to Spurs defender in FPL in recent seasons, thanks to his attacking threat.

But on Saturday, it was Destiny Udogie who was afforded more attacking license.

While the formation was 4-2-3-1 on paper, the 3-2-5 build-up was common throughout the first half.

It was Udogie who was pushed high and wide up the field, however, not Porro. The Spaniard instead hung back more, trying to break the Reading defence with balls from deep.

Above: Spurs’ first-half set-up against Reading, via Sofascore. 31 = Kinsky. 13 = Udogie. 4 = Danso. 17 = Romero. 23 = Porro. 30 = Bentancur. 29 = Sarr. 47 = Moore. 45 = Devine. 22 = Johnson. 19 = Solanke.

But before we get too carried away, maybe this was just horses-for-courses. In the second half, the roles were reversed: Ben Davies hanging back at left-back, Djed Spence advancing more from the right. Perhaps if Porro is playing behind the drifting Kudus, he’ll be asked to get forward more.

Porro did retain set-piece duties in the first half, at least. And, with defensive contribution points brought in, who is to say that a centre-half stationing wouldn’t benefit him either…

ABSENCES EXPLAINED

There were some rusty performances elsewhere, Johnson aside. Dominic Solanke and Son Heung-min delivered two of them, the former skying over in the first half.

As for absences, Archie Gray, Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert were late back from the European U21 Championships and not involved. Richarlison should be back next week, meanwhile, James Maddison is training partly.

Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin look set to miss the start of 2025/26, however.

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Kinsky (Vicario 46), Porro (Spence 46), Romero (Vuskovic 46), Danso (Van de Ven 46), Udogie (Davies 46), Bentancur (Bissouma 46), Sarr (Bergvall 46), Devine (Donley 46), Johnson (Kudus 46), Solanke (Lankshear 46), Moore (Son 46).

It is. But its only leased as that for 10 years, so can go back to normal in 2031. The money from the deal saved us in the interim so its all forgiven really.

Also SCL is a local business and the 2 founders are lifelong fans of the club, so that feels a bit better too.

      Its a horrible, horrible name.

      Highlights: https://youtu.be/9DI9wf9EJic?si=NBiKynbX-Wly-zeD

Wirtz looked insane. And he was always around the 6-yard box for crosses. I know it's only one behind doors pre-season game, but on the back of this 8.5m looks silly.

There are quite a few other options now. Other websites, social media platforms

It is funny though FPL is more popular than ever.

But the deadzone off season was always quiet. It will pick up once the game is released I am sure

Is there a way in the member's area to filter defenders by CBIs + tackles combined (as in one total figure that combines those stats)?

Good suggestion. With the changes a combined figure would be really useful

I manually worked out a player earlier and it took a while and afterwards I wasn't really sure I had worked it out properly. They probably is in the pipeline but if it isn't you wouldn't be the only one who wants it

    PLEASE CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP

Hi FFS. Please for the love of God reply to my emails or just cancel my fckng membership.

I've sent 4 emails, starting in Aug 2024 asking FFS to cancel my membership. I've advised that I receive an error when trying to do it. Yes, the email address is correct. Last email was 16/07/25 Subject: Cancel Sub

I've been very polite until now. You've already got my money from last season, if you take it again I will flip my lid. Seriously, do the right thing.

How come in manage subscription there is no button to cancel your subscription? That's kind of weird

As far as I can see there are no options enabling you to manage your subscription at all

Yeah, great point, I can't find it either. I thought it was just an issue with navigation on my phone. Last year there was an option, but I was told I needed to contact FFS.

So yeah, how does anyone cancel their sub? Surely not everyone has to send an email, that would be absolutely ridiculous.

If that is procedure and they don't cancel it make sure you chase them for a refund. That really is inadequate

Any sensible system would send you a confirmation of cancellation out. That way you know where you stand rather than being left guessing and posting hoping someone sees. Ridiculous really

            1. Baron Saturday
              • 15 Years

Yeah, this time I'll push a refund for sure. But that's assuming someone reads my email and replies to me.

The FAQ indicates you can cancel from Manage Subscription. "then click ‘manage subscription’ from the dropdown menu. You should then see the cancel button." Yeah, maybe you should see a cancel button, but I don't. And anyway, x4 unanswered emails is garbage. Not happy

Considering how bad the changes have been to this site, I would honestly question if your web designer has ulterior motives and is actively working to destroy this website and alienate its userbase. Do they actually work for your competitor?

      1. Comment box now does not auto-update.
      2. Comment box now only shows 5 comments instead of 10 like it used to.
      3. Can't move the teams in the fixture ticker anymore.
      4. Large blank spaces either side of the page for more ads. Dead space essentially.
      5. Many other issues others have pointed out.

You said you "have improved the user experience". You have done the complete opposite and somehow found ways to make this website worse. Who on earth made these decisions?

Just you wait and see the user numbers drop off a cliff when everyone shows up at the start of the season and realises how much you have ruined the website. Personally I am already looking at other sites after having been here for over 10 years.

Completely. I'm very rarely on here it's been Nirvana for me for years now pretty much solely

The comment thing you mentioned was the first thing I spotted. It makes it harder to have a conversation, honestly I think the site has become steadily harder to have a conversation on bit by bit for a long time

The ads too. It all looks particularly bad on mobile in particular

I know you had your issues and who it was with. You are always welcome back

If you ever want to discuss any of it. Let me know. You are missed

People generally leave because of arguments with one person or another. Another member let me know why you left and honestly I was very surprised, we have never had anything like that before.

It's maybe not the place for it but was it 100% definite? I wasn't sure to act on the individual for the matter or not

Ha, you need to be a paid member to use the tools. Over my dead body.

These money grabbers. So they removed the option to move the teams as a way to try and force money from people. Hilarious.

That's also why the auto update on the comments is gone, so you refresh the page more and they get more ad views.

FFS is truly in the gutter.

Money grabbers or not, it’s still a business. I don’t cook free lunch for strangers too. If strangers be calling me a money grabber, then why are they even here? There are many other places they can get their food from.

How long before the game opens do we think? I usually drop my daughter off at the train station in about an hours time but she can go for the bus if it means there's a risk I'm going to be shamed with a five figure ID all season.

Pleased to announce the launch of my magnificent new league - Fishkeepers Anonymous Cup. Entrance criteria very strict. ID in excess of 5 million - anyone not sufficiently committed to the slow will be summarily evicted.

You won't need the code for the FA Cup for weeks of course. Not expecting huge take up - it's very nearly as if my name is written on the trophy already which of course makes it the perfect competition.

I like having a low ID because it's easy to remember. I'd equally be as happy if I could get ID 10,000,000.

But the chances of getting a low ID are much better than nailing a nice round number.

I am genuinely shocked about how quiet it is on here. Does ths mean that everyone is too busy looking at content creator stuff to come on here? It could spell doom, despite all the available tools ...... Mark seems to have been very astute in selling up..

Tbh I didn’t even realise Mark had sold up. I used to be very active in first half of my FFS journey, but had issue with some of the big Mods on here and also with paywalls being introduced, so tend to be a casual in terms of my use here. So can’t speak for others, but I don’t like nor buy into the “content creators” but watch the odd YouTube video and use FPL Statistics for price rises/drops. FFS has evolved unfortunately and not in a good way imo

FFS are lucky they have a dedicated core following because I can't think of a single other site that tries to grow a userbase without a dedicated community area. The site looks and runs like something from the back end of Web 1.0, which younger users simply won't tolerate.

Compare the different experiences of your typical clueless RMTer:

They come here, leave a comment on an article, then wait - either their comment gets missed in a sea of other RMTs during rush hour, or they wait for ages during quieter periods. They cannot edit or delete their message after posting, and they're also likely to get troll comments from resident 'comedians' who they cannot block or mute.

              vs.

They reply to a content creators tweet - it gets loads of visibility from other FPL players that follow that account, with the chance that the author themselves reply.

Really is a mystery why somebody new would be deterred from posting here

i am new, and so far reasonably undeterred. But i do wish a good fixture ticker was available for free. That saddens me.

Don't think in the past 10 seasons FPL has ever launched on a Monday.

The fact they started with the big boys, now makes me think we could get the game today. But my thinking was that wasn't going to launch it without revealing those two.

Two price reveals this morning (Salah and Haaland).
But I don't expect there to be any more before it launches.
They often issue one last set of price reveals on the day of the launch.

Wissa and Wood are 7.5 in fanteam. Guessing they could be the same in FPL. Arguably both have lost key colleagues in Mbuemo and Elanga but Wissa could now be on pens and 7.5m is a decent price considering their points totals last year. Both likely to be in my team if they are 7.5m.

All those obsessing over when the game will launch need to relax and get on with their lives. It opens when it opens. The game is still just under 4 weeks away from starting anyway which is like 2 International breaks away.

Still a number of variables that could happen to influence team decisions anyway.

They should launch the game a week before the season starts when more information will be known about players moving to other clubs, injuries, pre season games and likely starters particularly those 4m defenders who are key as they facilitate the more expensive players.

Not really. Its more than enough time. I intend to sit down a day before deadline at which point I will be armed with all the key info I need to pick a team. No picking drafts only to constantly change it meaning far too much time spent on it. Just one team - enter - done. Did the same last year.

They want bums on seats. And that is done by opening up the game relatively early.

It would absolutely be fine for me as an individual too, but it's far too small a window to drum up casuals, organising MLs etc.

I guess it all revolves around which Salah turns up at the start of the season. The 24/25 pre-contract one is a bargain at 14.5m while the post-contract one (3 attacking assists in 9 games) would be like throwing 6.0m down the lavvy pan.
