Team Reveals

– Bench Boost, Kudus, Pedro, Salah (c). What does that say to you about Gameweek 1 first-draft team reveals?
– There’s too many of them?
– That’s one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at is: the bosses like them, let’s make some more of them.

So might an exchange have gone between Alan Partridge and Tony Hayers, had they worked in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) industry.

But heck, if every other five-time-top-1k-finishing Tom, Dick and FPL Harry is doing one, why don’t we.

By ‘we’, we’re talking about the Scout Squad, the in-house panel that puts together their Scout Picks long-lists during the season.

It consists of editor Neale, deputy editor Tom (he of the multiple top 1,000 ranks) and staff writer Marc. Sam is usually part of the panel, too, but has already beaten us to it with her Gameweek 1 Bench Boost. For that reason, we’ve got regular contributor Rich to become the rogue fourth leg of the content creation cat. And boy has he gone rogue, with no Mohamed Salah (£14.5m).

Here we go, then, with our first drafts…

MARC

Admittedly, this draft hasn’t weeks and weeks of thought put into it, as our final Gameweek 1 teams will. Although there is merit to the argument that gut instinct is better than overthinking, seeing other people’s drafts, then thinking a bit more and messing it all up.

It’s also lacking a chip strategy – partly because I’m still sulking about all these extra chips and transfers.

At the very least, let’s not make another Christopher Nkunku (£6.0m) mistake! I quite like Matheus Cunha’s (£8.0m) positional switch, but was all set to pick Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m), thinking these plus likely future teammate Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) would be priced similarly.

The Portuguese playmaker takes penalties and fares well when it comes to these new defensive contribution points. However, I certainly didn’t expect him to cost £1.0m more.

James Trafford (£5.0m) is in goal, assuming he joins Manchester City. A £5.0m route into their backline cannot be ignored. I’m not a huge fan of Vitalii Mykolenko’s (£5.0m) price rise, but massively rate Everton’s defence. And with Pedro Porro surprisingly staying at £5.5m, let’s give Destiny Udogie (£4.5m) a go instead.

When it comes to premiums, Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) is non-negotiable. I’m currently not feeling the other high-priced assets but there’s a decent chance that – for price spread reasons – I’ll eventually downgrade Chris Wood (£7.5m) to a £6.0m-£7.0m forward and increase the £1.0m that’s already left in the bank.

That can convert either Cunha or Phil Foden (£8.0m) into a big midfielder. Am I foolish for thinking Foden could return to what he was? Meanwhile, I’m staying away from Florian Wirtz (£8.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.5m) – the former is a wait-and-see, while I prefer some Pedro Neto (£6.5m) coverage of Chelsea’s attack.

As of now, Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) seems locked in due to Aston Villa’s great initial fixtures. Should a strong successor to Jhon Duran and Marcus Rashford be bought, maybe he goes.

Finally, while I don’t think Tottenham Hotspur will end up troubling the higher league positions, they begin at home to Burnley. Dominic Solanke (£7.5m) could flourish under the guidance of Thomas Frank.

Something to consider is a switch to 3-5-2 because it feels like there are so many more good midfield options. But a £4.5m forward is less likely to either play or grab some defensive contribution points.

TOM F

Who will be picking Cole Palmer? He had a dry run towards the end of last season, but has had a good club World Cup. Is he worth £2m more than Marmoush?

I don’t understand the Marmoush attraction. Palmer is a 90 minutes playmaker with penalties in his locker. Marmoush stands for uncertainty under Pep’s selection proces.

Thanks. I like Marmoush because I think he’ll start most games and proved himself last season. Also struggling to funds Marmoush-> Palmer…

I currently have Marmoush, but may take him out. Pep rotation pretty much rules out everyone but Robot, who is too expensive for me.

Given his fixtures, Palmer is unquestionably the safer choice. Watkins also > Isak to start I reckon.

Thoughts on a team with Salah, Palmer, Saka, Haaland plus the rest? Do you think it’s a weak strategy and will suffer compared to more balanced squads?

As temping as your draft is, balancing different priced players is much more flexible, plus budget picks this year are really limited, so I don’t like the idea.

Yeah I am inclined to agree. Also the fact that outside of the big 4 it leaves me with so many players I don’t particularly like which limits the enjoyment of FPL and engagement with the squad as a whole.

Not sure if I'm playing this year, but I'm getting lulled in

I think a heavy hitter approach here could really work

I've considered Isak or Wirtz and no Haaland, but ultimately setting up with Salah/Saka/Palmer. Set and forget

      1. Ser Davos
        • 11 Years

those 4 big hitters actually exploded early doors last season. Okay, Saka wasn't nuclear, but all started fantastic. As the season reveals itself there's scope to downgrade one and then start spreading the cash.

Think I would prioritise Salah/Palmer/Saka. I was comparing Isak/Saka earlier, but there's so much power in those mids and ideally when they're captained

        1. Count of Monte Hristo
          • 13 Years
          1 year, 1 month ago

Yeah all four are comfortable captain picks and can all score big hauls in a gameweek. Not ruling out going this direction. Also eliminates endless tinkering and stressing when you can lock in the big guns and anything from the rest is a bonus.

      2. Count of Monte Hristo
        • 13 Years

That’s a good point also, wanting to play the game but not waste too much time on it. Set and forget with not too much to think about aside of captaincy each week could appeal.

thinking back to Ville Ronka... there's something to be said about set and forget for sure. Crucially, he used to focus on the highest point scorers rather than PPM (something I can get fixated on)

Isak and Wirtz over Haaland could be a consideration too

You pretty much know how strong the rest of your team is going to be, on paper once you put those premiums in.

There’s no getting around that and they are priced that way to deliberately be prohibitive

    4. Jönny
      • 17 Years
      1 year, 1 month ago

It's actually not as bad as you'd think... it helps that there are some decent 4.5 and even 4.0 defenders, particularly taking into account the DC points.

What i quite like about this approach is you can avoid jumping around between whichever big hitter hauls any given week, and hopefully shift funds around to pick up the cheaper gems that hopefully emerge. Meanwhile hopefully your big hitters gain value, and if you do decide to redistribute funds you can theoretically do so fairly easily.

High risk of backfiring but then what strategy doesn't? Might have a play with this model myself, out of interest...

Lewis Skelly, Muñoz or Porro instead of Milenkovic, easily.

Since you have Udogie I would definitely switch Milenkovic > Skelly/Muñoz.

AWB, Udogie, De Cuyper all great picks. Maatsen no good seeing as he will share game time with Digne. Guehi instead? or Maatsen to another 5.5.

My team will change for sure, some players will do well in pre-season, so I will switch them in. But I'm fairly certain I will go for the triple premiums. Pretty happy with the forwards too, but perhaps I might switch out Welbeck for someone.

All players with an asterisk are prone to change, some are just place holders until I have more informed decisions.

I doubt many people will like my team, but what do you think?

    Kelleher

Not bad with those three big ones tbh
I would suggest downgrading Williams to 4.5 and bump up one of your 4.0 defenders

I'm also into a cheap defence at the moment but without Haaland.

Yea. I am quite happy with the attack.

Williams probably is a waste of money considering there are quite a few fairly decent 4.5 options. Vuskovic is a good player, but its unlikely he gets many minutes or I ever get to play him, he is probably a waste of a Spurs spot.

Keep a close eye on the new midfield signing from Hoffenheim Anton Stach who is going to be an absolute blinder of a CDM under the new system. Had the best CDM stats in the Bundesliga last season.

Rotating defenders should be trickier this year because of defensive contributions. The fixtures with low clean sheet odds will be the best for defensive contributions and vice versa.
Maybe it makes more sense to choose 3 defenders as "set and forget", especially if the plan is to delay the WC, and use your bench only in case of injury/suspension.

    Draft #906

    Vicario / Kinsky
    Frimpong / Botman / Konsa / Guehi / Tuanzebe
    Palmer / Wirtz / Rogers / Rice / Wharton
Haaland / Solanke / Joao Pedro

    0.5 left

GK: Started with Kelleher / Valdimarsson, might be 0.5 cheaper but not convinced Brentford will be performing same as previous couple of years
Defence: relatively happy, might be some 4.5 switching going on before season start (maybe Konsa out, as not sure I want double Villa)
MF: Taking a punt on "No Salah", considered Cunha but now Mbeumo is there might be 2 players fighting over similar roles. Not sure with Wharton, but need a 5.0
FWD: should (hopefully) be Goals there ...

343 most likely (and with that forward line, 433 is really the only other option)

Have no confidence in Spurs defence (yet) . Or Newcastle! Could not settle going into week 1 without Salah.

Indeed - went for it last year. Bottled it by week 5.
Salah in (and I'd want to keep Palmer and Haaland) would mean ditching Wirtz and (for a 6m imbalance) finding cheaper/better options up front.
There's always the wildcard if Salah doesn't slow down/move infield as predicted by some

Alcatraz at Everton might work. What sort of points will Zubimendi produce with new scoring system. Will Bailey start for Villa or Hinshlewood for Brighton? Dan James for Leeds , Anderson for Forest? All good for that 5th midfield spot,

Yeah that's a shout, pondering on the defensive scoring stuff while getting ready for work, normally more defensive work is done away from home, has any breakdown been done on this in terms of def point at home v away...and could this in turn aid a defensive rotating pair theory?

Mids get points for recoveries also.
I think they often happen to mids after having lost possession in attack, so not sure. However, I am not even sure what main formation to use.

Cheap 4.5 defenders from mid table teams getting steady streams of 3 and 4 points due to defensive contributions, I’m happy with that. Temptation is there to go heavy at the back but I think I’ll be starting with 4.5’s only

Steady 3 to 4 points wins nothing. Picking the right Premium defenders, a good 5m defender and the best 4.5m defender is key.

No, the key is picking the 15 players that give you the most points. Of course a steady stream of returns from the cheaper defenders can win if the funds spent further forward are garnering more points. It’s cheaper at the back and more funds in attack or funds spread more evenly.

Bench Boost - done it at least twice over the past 5 or so years and its always been a disaster. Why is it all of a sudden an option when you can wait to see who is actually going to start? Getting an extra one doesnt change that.

Nothing wrong with getting 1 BB I. Theory it's easy to predict who will start when we get to the final pre season week...at least players who U think will do well. I've played it in week 1 last 2 seasons for 40k and 2k GW 1 ranks

However, the fixtures were much much better last two seasons for players that U can rely on. This season, not quite. Definitely not BBing this season

Team set up for 5 GWs. Wildcard then once I have the right data. Bench Boost when the time looks right, same with FH and TC and then Afcon gives second effective WC.

The difference this year, is all of the extra chips. I think it’s viable to BB1, FH2 and WC 3 or 4 when we have a better idea of the DC effect. Normally you would be stuck with your BB team.
