A couple of Bruno Fernandes (£9.0m) goals in the Premier League Summer Series should gain the attention of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Underway in America, the annual four-way ensures that pre-season action continues to pick up speed.

Manchester United, Everton, West Ham United and Bournemouth faced each other throughout Saturday night and Sunday morning.

A few noteworthy situations came up, which we’ll take a look at.

Manchester United 2-1 West Ham United

FPL notes: Fernandes haul, Vardy injury latest + inconsistent Spurs 1

  • Goals: Fernandes (x2 inc pen) | Bowen
  • Assists: Heaven, Mainoo | Soucek
FPL all-rounder Fernandes

Managers already considering Fernandes for his combination of set-pieces, shots, chances creation and defensive contribution (DC) points will have loved this New Jersey outing.

In truth, both goals here derived from an Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) howler. Firstly, he fumbled a cross and clumsily fouled Ayden Heaven (£4.0m), allowing the Portuguese playmaker to score a penalty. Then, a slack pass went straight to Kobbie Mainoo (£5.0m), who fed Fernandes’ long-range strike.

But he played well overall, setting up Rasmus Hojlund‘s (£6.5m) first-minute shot that hit the post.

Being priced one full million more than Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m) remains surprising. But Rubem Amorim has hinted that not buying a new centre-forward could see Fernandes as a number 10 and one of Cunha or Mbeumo playing up front.

“Last year, I felt sometimes I pushed him back to have more possession in the build-up and we miss Bruno [Fernandes] near the box. With different characteristics from Bryan [Mbeumo] and Matheus Cunha, and I really like Kobbie Mainoo’s game, he will have more help this season.

“Bruno runs a lot, maybe in the sprints he is a different player but he runs a lot. He has a lot of endurance and he is smart. It’s not about that. Physicality with Bruno is not a concern, playing him deep or as an attacking midfielder.” – Ruben Amorim

Cunha played from the start but, like all outfielders, was replaced after 65 minutes. Meanwhile, Mbeumo arrived as part of the squad but wasn’t deemed ready to be thrown in.

Is £4.0m Heaven an Amorim favourite? / Bowen goal

Seeing the cheap Heaven start at centre-back, just like in Gameweek 38, is encouraging. Although he could’ve done better when Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) received the ball from Tomas Soucek (£6.0m) and finished with his right foot.

The 28-year-old almost matched Fernandes’ output with a late shot, but he was denied by goalkeeper Altay Bayindir (£5.0m).

Being reclassified as a forward slightly dents Bowen’s FPL appeal, but this display is a reminder that he bagged six goals and three assists in the final eight matches of last season, beginning this one at playoff winners Sunderland.

As for the scouting of theoretical defensive contribution points, FlashScore data says that Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.5m) and Maximilian Kilman (£4.5m) reached the threshold of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBIT).

FPL Fernandes

Manchester United XI: Bayindir; Yoyo (Fredricson 66), de Ligt (Maguire 66), Heaven (Shaw 66); Amad (Dalot 66), Ugarte (Casemiro 66), Mainoo (Collyer 66), Dorgu (Leon 66); Fernandes (Fletcher 66), Cunha (Mount 66); Hojlund (Obi 66)

West Ham United XI: Areola; Todibo (Mavropanos 72), Kilman, Aguerd (Scarles 79); Wan-Bissaka, Rodriguez (Potts 72), Soucek (Fearon 79), Ward-Prowse (Irving 79), Diouf (Luis Guilherme 79); Bowen, Fullkrug (Paqueta 72)

Everton 0-3 Bournemouth

  • Goals: Billing, Ouattara, Adu-Adjei
  • Assist: Traore, Evanilson
Error-ton

Such a match followed an earlier MetLife Stadium conclusion that Cherries are better than Toffees.

Although Everton had the best of a goalless first half, as Carlos Alcaraz (£5.5m) forced a good Djordje Petrovic (£4.5m) save and, shortly after, the goalkeeper rushed out to deny Beto (£5.5m).

However, after the break, it was all Bournemouth, influenced by David Moyes having so few substitutes to rely upon.

Philip Billing (£5.0m) is back from a Napoli loan and placed a lovely long-ranger past Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), before a second from Dango Ouattara (£6.0m) that would’ve caused an online FPL assist debate had it occurred in the league.

Evanilson‘s (£7.0m) pass set his teammate free, but the subsequent dribble briefly went loose onto Nathan Patterson‘s (£4.5m) leg, then back to his fierce near-post shot.

A mindless backwards pass from Jake O’Brien (£5.0m) allowed Daniel Adu-Adjei (£4.5m) to make it three. Pretty impressive, when noticing that Bournemouth were without Justin Kluivert (£7.0m).

No Tarkowski or Branthwaite

It should also be noted that Everton were missing their first-choice centre-backs James Tarkowski (£5.5m) and Jarrad Branthwaite (£5.5m).

The former could be a popular initial pick, as he would’ve been the biggest beneficiary of DC points, had they been around last season. But he’s still recovering from April’s hamstring problem.

Above: James Hill reached the DC threshold purely based on his 16 clearances

For Andoni Iraola’s side, the main summer question is how they’ll repair their defence from at least two major departures. Illia Zabarnyi (£5.0m) could be the third, if reports are to be believed.

Adrien Truffert (£4.5m) played well at left-back, while the clean sheet is a good sign for Petrovic.

No team conceded fewer 2024/25 home goals and the Serbian’s fixtures rotate well with Areola.

Everton XI: Pickford; Patterson, O’Brien, Gana (Onyango 82), Mykolenko; Garner, Iroegbunam (Armstrong 75); Ndiaye (Chermiti 75), Alcaraz, McNeil; Beto (Barry 75)

Bournemouth XI: Petrovic (Neto 46); Smith (Araujo 82), Hill (Mepham 82), Senesi (Zabarnyi 66), Truffert (Soler 66); Traore (Scott 66), Tavernier (Faivre 82); Brooks (Rees-Dottin 82), Winterburn (Billing 46), Ouattara (Semenyo 66); Evanilson (Adu-Adjei 66)

How does the defensive contributions work, 1 point for every 10?

2 points for the first 10 in a match for defenders and 2 points for the first 12 in a match for midfielders.

            No

            "Defensive Contribution Points

This new method of points scoring will reward outfield players who may not stand out with a goal or an assist but still make significant contributions during a match. Bonus points do recognise these players but the tireless defensive work of defenders and midfielders can often lose out to the scorer of a vital goal.

Losing a clean sheet to a late strike can be painful for the FPL Manager and scant reward if a defender has been dominant throughout. Defensive Contribution seeks to resolve this and address the balance. It favours defenders who accumulate clearances, blocks, interceptions (CBI) and tackles rather than the attacking full-backs who are often the go-to options for our squads.

Any defender who reaches an accumulative total of 10 or more clearances, blocks, interceptions (CBI) and tackles in a single match will earn 2 points.

Midfielders and forwards can also earn these points. To recognise the role they play in regaining possession and turning defence into attack, their ball recoveries contribute to their Defensive Contribution.

A midfielder or forward who reaches an accumulative total of 12 or more clearances, blocks, interceptions (CBI) tackles and recoveries will earn 2 points.

As a result, centre-backs and defensive midfielders now play a more influential role in Fantasy squads."

A little more tinkering. Have Ndiaye in currently but flipping between him
and Anderson, unsure whether to spend an extra 1m on defence. Current defence is five-way rotation of budget enablers to GW8.

    Chelsea close to signing Hato.

Left footed player that can play LB and LCB. One to keep an eye on that may impact Cucurella and Colwill.

No Haaland & No Salah is probably a trap, but it makes you think…

    Sanchez
    Cucurella Williams VVD
    Palmer Rogers Wirtz Bruno Saka
    Solanke Gyokeres

    GW1 (C) - Palmer
    GW2 (C) - Saka or Gyokeres
    GW3 (C) - Palmer or Bruno
    GW4 (C) - Palmer

    Is it madness or viable?

I don’t think anymore that a No Haaland & No Salah team necessarily underscores a Salah team in the first 4 GWs tbh

Are defensive contributions just the James Ward-Prowse effect on drugs … Across the season the points accumulate to look meaningful but actually means the difference between a 2 pointer and a 4 pointer and mainly in games you’d likely to want to bench that player anyway because of hard opponents.

I’d be very keen to see the number of DC points that would’ve in been earnt by players already earning 6+ points in said game.

Wonder if it’s getting far too much attention just because it’s new.

Isn’t that my point though. We set and forget to gain the extra two points and miss out on higher ceilings by rotating for better fixtures.

It might prove a false economy chasing DC points.

fair point. maybe not maximum potential chasing DC points. i guess you could argue with rotating you're taking money out of your starting xi. isnt most rotation 4.5s anyways tbf, cs chances for those defences are always pretty low-ish

Oh yeah I’m not saying it’s irrelevant at all, the likes of Tarkowski and Murillo aren’t far from my thoughts.

Just feels like it’s dominating the discussion in a way that’s disproportionate.

Just feels like it’s will largely just increase the points on your bench. As an example, Elliot Anderson, would I rather play him against Brighton away or Burnley at home, the answer isn’t clear anymore, and the upside isn’t there for the answer to be play him in both.

yeah agreed if you're a fan of rotation, then it does muddy the waters abit.

if im being honest i found the bps changes last season (shots on target, fouls won etc) tough to get used to 😀 it might take a while to work out how best to use the existence of DC points to cater to the strategies you prefer when playing FPL

Typically in a 1-0 win with a strikers goal we'd expect the scoring striker to get the 9 points. It may not be the case this season if a defender or two get good CBITs, they may get top baps as a reward with their CS and reach double figures while the striker is left short. Dunno though.

As I say there was an official article that didn’t highlight any major changes to DC in bps. Players don’t get bonus directly for scoring more points.

Its going to be is it worth taking a punt on say an Arias who may get assists and goals or may get you 2 points, VS a steady Eddie like Ceicedo or who may get you 4 points but that is their ceiling.

    Repost - Got lost RMT’s 🙂

When posting RMT’s, you need to state your plans. There is a huge difference between a BB1 team and a non BB team - also, whether you are going to FH or WC in gw2 makes a massive difference. No context makes it impossible to comment.

It doesn't really work on mobile, if you scroll down a bit, you will see a 3mm gap where it says comments, If you have baby sized fingers, you might be able to click it and then look through the 3mm gap to read your comments.

Its basically impossible to use on mobile. You need to kind of scroll down fully, then up a bit fast and you can see it, but its legitimately tiny and unusable.

Current draft, with GW1 BB in mind:

    Verbruggen Kelleher
    VvD Saliba Williams Lacroix VdV
    Salah Palmer Mitoma Anderson Reijnders
    Watkins Solanke Piroe

All being well, my plan is to use the Free Hit in GW6, Wildcard in GW13, and TC in GW19.

    I thought I'd have a play just to see how it looks;

    4.5, 4.0
    5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0, 4.0
    Salah, Palmer, 5.5, 5.5, 5.0
    Haaland, Gyokeres, 5.5

    Kelleher, Valdimarsson
    Neco, AWB, Udogie^, Esteve, Heaven*
    Salah, Palmer, Reijnders, Gana^, Baleba
    Haaland, Gyokeres, Piroe

^ Could be any 4.5 (Guehi) or Anderson (for Gana)
    * Fodder

Shame it doesn't pack a punch!

Yeah, pretty good. Not sure about Beto and would upgrade Bogle. You could go for Wan Bissaka, Andersen or Senesi at the same price.

I know there is an article, but who do you think the best 4.0 defenders are?

I have Esteve so far, but not sure about the second. Reinildo?

Will need to play the second one in GW1.

      1. You don’t say if it’s a BB team, but I’m guessing not.
      2. You don’t say when you are planning to WC or FH
      3. Most of the team is shite (like most of Salah, Haaland, Palmer teams)
      4. Anyone saying threemium should be banned and sent into exile with Camzy.

How stupid of you to think I think it’s a BB team, when I said I’m guessing not. My comment was in relation to my earlier post, that people posting RMT's, should make it clear what their chip plans are, otherwise it’s hard to judge.

    Kelleher

    Solanke | Wood

    Kinsky | Reinildo | Esteve | Obafemi

So considering the likes of Murillo, Milenkovic and Tarkowski basically get 4 points every other game irrespective of clean sheets, shouldn't these be the first names in our teams or am I missing something?

    1. The Bandit
      • 15 Years

Well it doesn’t beat an assist or goal and is far less exciting

      1. rozzo
        • 12 Years
        8 months, 21 days ago

        True, but it's guaranteed points

That's how those teams play. As good as Salah is you aren't sure if he will return in a match with Milenkoviic you know he has a baseline of 4 points pretty much and the clean sheet is the bonus

        1. The Bandit
          • 15 Years
          8 months, 21 days ago

It’s not guaranteed though. It’s a case of trying to guess whether they are more likely to get 10 DC points or attacking points. It really just that at this point, a guess. No doubt it will be clearer as the weeks go by.

Starting with this - I wanted the 3 big hitters in midfield and prefer Watkins over Gyokeres at least for the first wee while. Bench is rough but not planning BB until towards Afcon.

    Kelleher
    N.Williams Konsa De Cuyper
    Salah Palmer Saka Rogers
    Watkins Wood Wellbeck

Subs fodder but couple 4 defenders who will play.
