Two summer signings, both of them Fantasy Premier League (FPL) budget picks, caught the eye in the early-evening Sunday friendlies.

We run the rule over West Ham United’s win over Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat in Girona.

WEST HAM UNITED 2-0 BOURNEMOUTH

FPL Gameweek 25 differentials: Trossard, Huijsen + Bowen 1
  • Goals: Fullkrug, Bowen
  • Assists: Bowen, Diouf

THE DIOUF IS ON THE FIRE

West Ham look like they’ve bagged a player in El Hadji Malick Diouf (£4.5m). The wing-back’s deliveries from the left flank were superb on Sunday night, and led to both goals.

Diouf might have bagged two assists had Jarrod Bowen (£8.0m) not mishit his 24th-minute cross, the newly reclassified forward then regaining composure to tee up strike partner Niclas Fullkrug (£6.0m) for the opener.

The Hammers’ new Senegalese defender then did claim an assist after the break, with Bowen this time tidily finishing his pinpoint ball in.

In between was another wicked delivery that Fullkrug fired off target.

“Malick was a positive in terms of his deliveries, and his crosses were really good.” – Graham Potter

Fullkrug remains a name to monitor in the mid-price forward list: he’d hit double figures for league goals in each of the three seasons before joining West Ham. As is the case with fellow new boy Callum Wilson, it’s more about whether he can stay fit: injury wiped out half of last season and he made only six starts.

HAMMER SMASH AND GRAB

Bournemouth had 14 shots to West Ham’s five but the Hammers made their efforts count.

Taking chances has long been the Cherries’ issue: they’ve ‘underachieved’ on the xG front in all three seasons since their return to the Premier League. Last year they did so by -6.94.

And so it was again on Sunday night, with Evanilson (£7.0m) missing the worst of the sitters when hitting the woodwork with the goal gaping. Ilia Zabarnyi (£5.0m) did likewise with a close-range header, while luck was out again when the frame of the goal was rattled for a third time when Evanilson charged down Alphonse Areola (£4.5m).

There was again no Justin Kluivert (£6.5m) but this was expected, with the midfielder only given an “outside chance” of featuring. He shouldn’t be too far away now. £4.5m midfielder Hamed Traore also got more game-time, partly as a result of Kluivert, Ryan Christie (£5.0m) and Lewis Cook (£5.0m) being out.

Budget forward Eli Junior Kroupi (£4.5m) returned to full fitness, at least, replacing Evanilson in the final quarter of the game.

Bournemouth XI: Neto (Petrović 46), Smith (Araujo 69), Senesi (Hill 69), Zabarnyi (Mepham 83), Truffert (Soler 83), Tavernier (Semenyo 46), Adams (Winterburn 84), Scott (Faivre 84), Brooks (Rees-Dottin 84), Traoré (Ouattara 69), Evanilson (Kroupi 69).

West Ham United XI: Areola, Wan-Bissaka (Walker-Peters 70), Todibo (Mavropanos 70), Kilman, Aguerd, Diouf (Scarles 90+1), Potts (Rodríguez 70), Ward-Prowse (Orford 84), Paquetá (Irving 85), Bowen (Marshall 90+1), Füllkrug (Souček 70).

GIRONA 2-1 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS

FPL new signings: Cherries' new £4.5m keeper

  • Goals: Arias
  • Assists: Joao Gomes

JHONNY ON THE SPOT

Is a Fantasy Premier League star born? FIFA Club World Cup Fantasy managers loved a bit of Jhon Arias (£5.5m), and now maybe FPL bosses will too.

The attacking midfielder took less than 15 minutes of his Wolves debut to notch his first goal, showing some good upper-body strength to bulldoze his way between two Girona defenders, latch onto a ball from Joao Gomes (£5.5m), and lash home what turned out to be a consolation.

He’d come close to an assist, too, showing some good aggression to win possession in the Girona box and tee up Jorgen Strand Larsen (£6.5m) for a saved effort.

Looking bright on the ball and purposeful off it, he was everything Wolves weren’t in the first hour.

It’s just one appearance, but a good start all the same.

HOEVER… HOWEVER

Vitor Pereira’s side created precious little in Spain before Arias’s introduction. There was a lot wrong with the performance, from Emmanuel Agbadou‘s (£4.5m) off-the-boil display to Marshall Munetsi‘s (£5.5m) ineffectiveness, but it’s hard not to think that Wolves have lost a lot at wing-back with the departures of Nelson Semedo and Rayan Ait-Nouri (£6.0m).

As much as FPL managers might want him to be, Ki-Jana Hoever (£4.0m) is probably not the answer at right wing-back. Rodrigo Gomes (£4.5m) and Hugo Bueno (£4.5m) – on corners here – haven’t really laid a convincing claim on the other flank, either, but David Moller Wolfe has at least arrived in the last few days.

Two goals early in the second half did for Pereira’s troops. Sloppy marking contributed to the first strike but the second, in fairness, was a snorter.

You’d have to fancy a year in the lower reaches of the table awaits Wolves based on pre-season so far but, as Matheus Cunha (£8.0m) has proven, an individual can prosper in FPL even among Premier League strugglers. Arias and Strand Larsen still have potential, therefore.

One other line of note: Yerson Mosquera (£4.5m) was back in a Wolves shirt on Sunday after a long, long spell out.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI: Sa (Johnstone 45), Hoever (Lima 81), S Bueno (Doherty 64), Agbadou, Toti (Mosquera 64), R Gomes (H Bueno 64), Andre (Hwang 81), J Gomes, Lopez (Arias 64), Munetsi (Bellegarde 64), Strand Larsen (Kalajdzic 81).

Potential 4.0m playing GK - Dubravka is the primary target for Burnley

There was talk about him going there if we got Trafford. That's why he didn't go on the pre season tour. After the Trafford deal fell through for Newcastle, there was talk that Dubs would join the tour, but he didn't. Could be a good chance that the move happens as Newcastle try and trim our keeper compliment.

    RMT

    Kelleher
    VanDijk Gabriel M.Nunes Milenkovic
    Salah Palmer Wirtz Reijnders
    Watkins Pedro

    4m Guiu Reinildo Miley

    0.0m ITB

+ double CHE attack to take advantage of fixture run
+ Reijnders is a steal if he emulates Gundo (I think he will)
+ double LIV for that opener vs Bournemouth seems a banker

    - bench is rubbish
    - unsure on Kelleher
    - maybe better options then Nunes at 5.5m?

Very heavy hitting team! but as you say, the bench suffers for it so I think it really depends on if you have plans to early wildcard to give yourself some bench options or plan on taking your chances that your 11 play every week.

I think there is definitely better options then Nunes and if you are looking to free up cash to strengthen bench you could take him down to a 4.5 giving you 1m to I'm prove either 1 or 2 players on bench.

Pedro is a interesting one. Could be great, could be an absolute headache

Cheers, Yeah I think the bench does need strengthening. Nunes to a cheaper option the obvious choice, would maybe put a Sarr in with the Madders injury, 5m is nuts. Reinildo to a Konsa/Richards also good.

I actually really like Pedro, I think he'll be a hit under Maresca.

    Morning y'all

    So, here she is...

    Sels.
    Virgil. Cucurella. vDv.
    Salah. Palmer. Reindeer. Xhaka.
Watkins. Gyro. Solanke (or other if out).

    Darlow. Le Fee. Senesi. Esteve.

A draft that's lived with me all weekend, and ab no plans on changing.
No room for Wirtz - want 2 premiums up back.
vDv/Senesi - Spurs/Bournemouth have an unbelievably good rotation.
Reindeer stays, he's probably as nailed on as RAN considering pep. Got cover for him anyway.

Thoughts lads. Go on, tear it to shreds!

    1. AAAFootball

Thanks for that rotation, had not seen that.

Only question, is Danso likely to start?
He has insane defcons, but he might impact vdv and romero's minutes?

He has not started much yet, but Frank likes 3cbs at brentford, so there is a chance we could see that at spurs.

With romero transfer links, he is not out of the picture entirely

One article on ffs included member information that rated him as the best in fpl for cbits per 90

A risky gamble, but could pay off

Frank sometimes plays with 3atb but also plays 4atb so absolutely no guarantee Danso starts unless one of Romero or VDV is out

            1. AAAFootball
              • 1 Year

Yes. No guarantee at all, just a thought of sprs like this:

              Vicario
              Vdv. Danso Romero
              Udogie sarr kulu porro
              Kudus Johnson
              Solanke

              Sort of like United.
Not saying locked in or even likely, but there is potential for a steal here

I see. Which spurs def would you choose (4.5 my limit). Other than that I'll have to get a west ham/brighton rotation and I really don't want wanB. Don't rate him at all. No in the backline at least.

Because you’re on a WC now & can them clean it up with the actual WC.

You can have all the data you want but curve balls from managers are just as likely to happen in GW9 as they are in GW1, you still have to take as few risks as possible.

I found a very nice rotation if you are willing to pay a bit more:

    Tarky, Gvardiol, Milenkovic, Richards, Konsa

Fixtures for this lot 1-7 (playing the premiums at least 5 times each)

    Leeds Wolves Brentford
    Brighton Spurs (gvardiol) Palace
    Brighton Wolves West Ham
Sunderland Man U Villa/Everton (depending on who you choose- konsa for more likely CS or Tarky for the cbits)
    Burnley Sunderland West Ham
    West Ham Burnley Sunderland
    Burnley Palace Brentford

    This seven week run includes:
12/21 promoted/ less than 50 goals last year

17/21 12th place or lower last year
    0/21 8th place or higher

    Burnley, Sunderland, West Ham x3
    Wolves, Brighton, Brentford, Palace x2
    Leeds x1

The other fixtures are : Tarky vs Villa, Gvardiol vs Spurs, Gvardiol vs Man U

It's more the fact that you're leaving premium defenders on the bench for a large portion of the season which isn't generally good use of funds (i.e. a lot of dead money on the bench most weeks that ought to be in your first 11).

    How is this?

    Sels Hegyi
    Gvardiol Tarkowski Milenkovic Richards Konsa
    Palmer Rogers Semenyo Ndaiye Sarr
    Haaland Watkins Fullkrug

looking at wc gw7, no other chips. Only want Fullkrug for gw1 and then sell him or bench

I think Fullkrug is a reasonable gamble.

I'm not keen on Semenyo myself, I'd rather try and take that position up to Gakpo or Wirtz myself. Possibly I'd switch Rogers to Malen and Semenyo to Wirtz.

Leeds fans, who which 4.0 def would you pick: Gudmundsson or Rodon?
From an attacking POV - from a CBT point of view

Does jorrel hato affect cucu's minutes?

Not really. He's more likely to get mins at CB.

Seems to be competition at LCB, backup at LB

Potentially yes, especially once midweek UCL begin, as he is capable of playing both LB and LCB.

I hadn't checked his stats out yet. His attacking returns were somewhat underwhelming for an Ajax fullback

He may be better suited to an inverted FB role rather than traditional attacking FB

    On Brentford's doomed summer upheaval...

TL;DR: This isn't a prediction. Just the basis for my argument that I wouldn't write them off so easily. If there's one club that can survive this upheaval, it's Brentford

This is a club known for their recruitment and promotion strategy. Wissa was an impact sub as Toney banged them in. They sold Benrahma and Watkins from their famed BMW Championship trio. I remember Raya being irreplaceable, then Flekken grew into the role, now they've got Kelleher(!)

Nothing about this summer seems dangerously different from how they operate, imo

Oh yeah, one more: Brentford had no plan to replace Dean Smith when he left for Aston Villa in October 2018:

    https://www.skysports.com/amp/football/news/11748/11524013/brentford-starting-from-scratch-to-replace-dean-smith

They then appointed Thomas Frank, who had been Smith's assistant for two years:

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/45881828

Keith Andrews had been Thomas Frank's technical coach for a year before Frank left for Spurs, this time early in preseason:

I believe similarly that Brentford will do much better than anticipated. Thiago could be a great option. Would I start with any Brentford? Probably not but it's not a total disaster by any means.

Losing both Mbeumo and Wissa in the same window still a big blow.

A similar comment was made when Toney left Brentford

Agreed, I don't think the needle has shifted significantly as some folks have suggested.

Thomas Frank actually had managerial experience before being hired, which Keith Andrews does not. With the ownership's track record they're obviously not guaranteed to fail, but from the outside, it looks like a money-saving appointment which could be costly.

We only need one of the promoted sides to do better than expected, and the likes of Brentford, West Ham, Wolves and Everton will quickly be looking over their shoulders.

    RMT:

    Raya
    VVD-Colwill-Konsa
    Salah(C)-Palmer(V)-Sarr-Rogers
    Bowen-Solanke-Evanilson

    B: Kelleher, Udogie, DeCuyper, A.Ramsay

    Q. Colwill still nailed after signing Hato?
    Q. Will Aaron Ramsay start for Burnley, if not, who does at £4.5M?

Thoughts on this BB team? My plan is BB GW1, FH2 and WC3 or 4.

    Sels-Verbruggen
    Colwill-Mykolenko-Spence-VDV-Diouf
    Palmer-Ndiaye-Salah-Gakpo-Kudus
    Bowen-Fullkrug-Wood

Honestly would go Haaland over Salah, esp with WC three
Watch Spence minutes, tricky decision there

Salah will only be in my team for GW1 in this plan. Will have Haaland GW2 and maybe both by GW3

It's basically C Salah vs C Haaland, for GW1 it's Salah for me. But I agree

Any interest in El Hadji Malick Diouf? Or is it best to avoid 2 WH defenders if AWB is the preferred choice

I'm also warming to Arias, aka The Colombian Pele

Like arias esp in gw five on

Diouf solid, even consider instead of awb

Diouf's ahead of AWB in attacking threat, imo

West Ham's defence under Potter has been underwhelming so far, so I'm staying away. Having both could be good for BB1 though

    Looking at BB GW1

    Sels

    Gvardiol - VDV - VVD - Milenkovic

    Sarr - Palmer - Eze - Rogers

    Haaland (c) - Watkins

    Verbruggen / Diouf / Beto / Arias

Thought? Worried at my lack of Liverpool and Arsenal so this isn’t set in stone!

MU might finally get plenty pens again, with players like Amad, Mbuemo, Dorgu and Cunha attacking the box.
